The People’s Place (Place de la Republique, Entry 4)

I wanted to go to Place de laRépublique because I had heard about it in the news, but also when Dr. Kraus talked about it in reference to the 2015 acts of terrorism in Paris.

I think it’s important to know the history of this place before I dive into how it experienced now. The building of this place took place as a result of the Haussmanization of Paris in 1854 (the creation of the grand boulevards that characterize modern day Paris). The square was named after the 1st, 2nd, and 3rdRepublics. An important part of this place that was added is the Marianne monument towards the center of the square. The Morice brothers won a contest in 1879 to construct the monument. Leonard did the sculpture and Charles did the base. The statue of the republic was inaugurated on July 14, 1883 to commemorate great events in history. This place commemorates the first three Republics of France, each of which have a history of French national identity, so it would make sense that this place and it’s monument is named in remembrance of them.

Nowadays, Place de la République is used for remembrance as well. In contemporary Parisian culture, it has been known to be a place for the people. What do I mean by that? It is used for commonly used for protests, but also has been used as a lieu de memoire for terrorist attacks. The recent Yellow Vest protests and Algerian protests have taken place here, but after the Paris Terrorist Attacks of 2015, this is where the events were remembered. As we talked about in class and how Dr. Kraus lectured about the response to these attacks, it makes sense to me why the place is used is this context. This isn’t a super touristy location and it is more of a local’s neighborhood. We can’t forget the iconography of the Marianne here either. For those who don’t know, the Marianne is the woman represented with the monument. She is known from Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People and represents the French people. Thus, making this a people’s place—it’s a place for them to express their emotion.

I experienced this place on a Monday Afternoon. Not much was going on, but it was interesting to see it as a working area. There were people enjoying an afternoon walk or a snack on the benches, some skateboarders, and people just walking through. What I didn’t expect, was for the Metro to pop us out in the middle of the square. I was thinking we were gonna walk up and see the Marianne and it was going to be like the moment Dr. Kraus walked up to it after visiting the attack sites, but it wasn’t. The Marianne monument is definitely the big highlight of the place, it is in the center and taller than the parts of the place. I enjoyed walking around in an area that was exploding with tourists and seeing a place that I had heard about in class.
