Hi! Tumblr isn’t letting me tag you directly for some reason but it’s 100% OK to link to my post, don’t worry!

I’ve been seeing some people getting a bit confused and getting some stuff wrong in the comments of that one post telling the story about the creator of Neopets throwing a hissy fit (Hissi fit lol) over people disliking his idea of a game “that’s just like Neopets but with crypto” and I don’t want to add anything to it to not bother the OP but Neopets has been a hyperfixation of mine since I was 13 and I physically can’t stop myself from going “Um, ackshually ☝️🤓” so I’m gonna do it in my own post. Here’s what happened:

The guy who got super pissed off and started badmouthing Neopets users, ending his tirade with a selfie of him giving Neopets users the finger, Adam Powell, did create Neopets, yes, but he doesn’t own it anymore since it was sold to Viacom in 2005. He has been involved in a few game ventures since but they haven’t been very successful.

His idea wasn’t to “implement NFTs in Neopets”, he’s developing (or planning to) another game that’ll apparently be free to play with some extra paid features, and said features would be paid in some sort of cryptocurrency.

Sadly, the parent company of Neopets, JumpStart, already tried to implement NFTs by partnering with Metaverse back in 2021, with disastrous results, both in the eyes of Neopets players (who hated the idea because NFTs are a scam and terrible for the environment and all) and in the eyes of NFT bros (because the NFTs in question were VERY overpriced given their poor quality and made using stolen assets from Neopets fan sites). The project is apparently still underway but it’s hugely unpopular and tweets made by the official Neopets Metaverse account mostly only gets engagement from NFT bots, if they get any at all.

Back to Adam. He apparently thought people would be “excited about his new game because of the Neopets Metaverse thing”, without knowing how much the fanbase hated the whole thing, and tried to peddle it in the Discord server of the r/Neopets subreddit, a subreddit that has always been VERY vocal against the Neopets NFTs. And well. You can guess how much people weren’t interested in his game. Then, just to make matters worse, people went on the Discord server of his game and saw that it was badly moderated and chock full of homophobic comments made by cryptobros.

Adam gets pissed off at people disliking his game idea and not taking kindly to his comments that “they just don’t understand what crypto is about” and goes on an angry tirade, saying stuff such as how much he wished he never made Neopets because the fanbase sucks, saying he’s going to buy it back just to destroy it and ending in the aforementioned middle finger selfie, all while people clowned on him like crazy. This ended in him getting banned from the Discord server AND from the r/Neopets subreddit. He then started trying to defend himself and demanding to be unbanned in… the comment thread of a news article relating the incident in the Neopets fan site Jellyneo. Last time I checked he was still at it.

He blamed his outburst on “having drunk alcohol while on Sertraline” and has said he wasn’t aware of the homophobic comments in his server and claimed that he doesn’t have anything against LGBT+ people, but he has also made it very clear he doesn’t think he’s in the wrong and won’t apologize for anything.

“They’re free from nft bros” Nope. Owned by one!

“The original team rebought them” God fucking no and you should not want them to, Adam Powells little meltdown over neopets users criticizing his new crypto venture is reason enough lol.

“The company was sold to Neopets Internal Teams” They sold it to the guy who used to head the former NFT project and are promising this means TNT has more freedom “under new leadership“ with “no current plans for crypto/NFTs” (This is not a promise not to make them)

One of the “brand ambassadors” who is supposed to help TNT with the knowing and understanding the userbase is some celebrity who’s wife is also a celebrity who I’ve seen people CLAIM used to be a Neopets mod. Does that sound like a neopets user who can tell the neopets team what the average user wants? No call for users who aren’t celebrities to become brand ambassadors has been made afaik.

Current Neopets mods are silencing trans people for mentioning HRT as well as top surgery and ignoring cis people talking about pregnancy, death, and surgery. (Have seen these boards go on for several hours and never get deleted even after a heated debate on one one about abortion) 

There’s items and backstory on the site that are racist. Neopets users have asked these be addressed. Do you think this “brand ambassador” will address any of that? Why does the ambassador need to be a celebrity? Unless the actual intent is to have “ambassadors” who sell neopets as a brand to the potential new userbase and isn’t about “listening to the users” at all.

god can one person with a huge following please for once just reblog and acknowledge the TRUTH. (doesn’t have to be from me I’d just like the actual info to be spread!) Awareness will help us keep the worst from happening! Pretending everything is fine until it isn’t is NOT the way!

@pirakeet , absolutely no worries- i know you weren't trying to spread misinformation, i just wanted to make sure that people were aware that things were not going to be as bad as they initially sounded. i only know this because i was worried about the exact same thing and have been keeping my eyes peeled for updates, since i know several of my own neopets accounts were originally created on dead gmails. of course their emails are updated now, but this horrible 'original email' policy means that even if you change the email associated with an account, if a hacker can get into the email the account was created with, they can still try to smooth-talk TNT into letting them in! i've heard of it happening before. :/

i hate to say it but the only way i've found that got me help from TNT on my own account when i locked myself out of it was email receipts of paypal transactions for NC. so if you have paypal transactions with neopets for NC or Premium, make sure you save records/receipts of them, they may be your best bet at getting back into your account if it gets compromised. this is the one time buying the cards for NC at a discount isn't a great idea since you can see the redeemed codes from inside the account, making them less... provably yours i guess. it sucks but 'i paid you money and here's proof' is just about the only thing TNT cares about...

Fwaku and Sparrowan. They mostly just rove around with their petpets, have BBQ parties, and try not to kill each other.

-------------------------- [Fwaku, Halloween Draik] A sleazy, thuggish mercenary from Meridell. Rude, volatile, and aggressive. -Loves MONEY -Obscenely lucky, but tends to squander his good fortunes through bad decision making. Also thinks he’s invincible as result of repeatedly lucking out of life-or-death situations. -Always has his tongue sticking out, gross. -Was /chewed up alive/ as a DRAIK EGG and kind of had a fucked up start to life. -Justine, the light faerie who ultimately saved Fwaku, was initially uncertain whether saving the mangled draik would be the right thing to do considering quality of life- and thus decided to leave the decision to the dice. -Has chronic pain from fucked up nerves/spine, but he hates being seen as an object of pity, so he takes on the TOUGH AGGRESSIVE MACHISMO route. -Fought in the first war between Meridell and the Darigan Citadel, and nearly died in an encounter with Wizerz. (The scars he has are actually from this instance; he was torn open real good) [Nib the Pirakeet] Fwaku's petpet. A rather fat pirakeet who loudly squawks 'NIB...' in a baritone voice. -While Fwaku says he only keeps Nib around to pluck feathers off of for fletching arrows, he secretly enjoys the company. -Nib was originally a runtling pirakeet that imprinted on him while he was on Krawk Island. Fwaku was irritated for the entirety of his stay on Krawk Island because this squawky bird kept appearing everywhere he went and getting in the way of his work. Somewhat impressed with Nib's stubborn persistence, Fwaku decided to just keep the pirakeet in his company. [Sparrowan, Christmas/Desert Pteri] A silent nomad who makes a living guiding travelers through the Lost Desert. Always inexplicably hungry and seems to have a bottomless stomach. -Lives for FOOD. While usually down-to-earth and rational, has a tendency to think with his stomach. -He can actually speak, but chooses not to. -Though silent, surprisingly brazen and stubborn. -Ancestors originally from ancient Qasala; royal messengers. They escaped the destruction of Qasala and dispersed across the land, but the bloodline remained affected by Razul’s curse. Their descendants remained under the sealed emperor’s control as eyes and ears to the world while he plotted his return. -While under this influence, Sparro was essentially a pawn used to lead unsuspecting adventurers to their doom by directing them to the Qasalan ruins, where they would become fodder for Razul’s revival. -After Qasala was freed from Razul’s influence in the events of the Lost Desert Plot, the effects of the curse have become negligible- but still remain to some degree (similar to some of the undead still in Qasala.) -Sparro remains silent chiefly because his voice still carries a subtle compelling effect from the curse, and he has a bitter taste in his mouth about the whole situation. [Lunch the Grackle Bug] Sparro’s petpet. A timid grackle bug that fears ending up as someone’s lunch. -Lunch’s name is Sparro’s attempt at a joke. Probably. -Sparro picked up Lunch at a food stall- except, the grackle bug was a lot more alive than he expected. He’s kept Lunch around since then as emergency ration a travel companion. -To the utter horror of Lunch, Sparro still eats grackle bugs. Sorry buddy. -------- [Sparro and Fwaku dynamics] -Don't really get along, mostly due to Fwaku’s generally bad attitude.... but for some reason they seem to work well together as a team. Probably is the most coordinated team out of all characters when their goals are aligned. -Sparro thinks Fwaku is complete trash- but of course you won’t hear him say that 👀 He’s quite at odds with Fwaku’s senselessly violent ways- especially when innocent citizens get involved. When he sees Fwaku doing something against his own values, Sparro actively sabotages Fwaku’s work to make a statement. -Fwaku thinks Sparro is aggravatingly arrogant with his silence (also he just doesn’t like birds in general); he tries to provoke him to speak, because that would be a VICTORY. In the meanwhile though, he tends to end up oversharing about himself because he can’t stand the ~utter silence~ -Typically at a precarious truce, as Sparro usually makes the effort to disengage from Fwaku’s deliberate attempts to instigate a fight. Sometimes escalates to physical altercations- Sparro's curses counter Fwaku's extreme luck to a degree so they usually end up at a stalemate. -Sparro only bothers to stick around because Fwaku’s camp food is DELICIOUS. Food is the ultimate unifier; things are pretty peaceful when they’re just BBQing. -They both wholeheartedly believe that their own petpet is the best petpet. Jokes on them because they’re both kind of NOT THE BEST PETPET OWNERS please call the ppl on these fools -Over time, Fwaku gets very good at reading Sparro. This creates a strange situation where Fwaku can hold a complete ‘conversation’ with Sparro- which, from the perspective of outsiders, just looks like he’s having a one-sided conversation.
