Oman’s tourism sector is getting a facelift with significant investment in hospitality infrastructure, prudent policy measures and effective international campaigns, in line with the government’s 2040 strategy
The government of Oman is making tourism a central plank of its economic strategy, with mega plans to enhance its appeal among tourists from across the globe with a series of initiatives such as better air connectivity and airport facilities, hotels and resorts, and an e-visa facility. The idea is to help the country mature from being an ‘emerging’ tourism market into an established one with a high-volume of repeat guests and a diverse range of feeder markets.
An ambitious stride towards making tourism one of the most significant income generators in the Sultanate has been the 2040 Tourism Strategy which provides a comprehensive blueprint for tourism development in Oman and outlines a series of targets for the country’s tourism sector. The strategy unveiled by the Ministry of Tourism is a clearly defined road map aimed at making tourism one of the most important economic pillars for the country’s future. The implementation of the strategy would avail more than 500,000 jobs by the end of 2040, with the total investment in the sector expected to touch RO19bn of which only 12 per cent will be by the public sector. The contribution of tourism sector to the GDP would range between 6 to 10 per cent.
Maitha Saif Al Mahrouqi, undersecretary of the Ministry of Tourism, said: “The tourism sector in the Sultanate is witnessing a remarkable annual growth with statistical indicators pointing out the increase in the number of tourists and visitors; as well as the launch of new tourism projects and hotel facilities around the Sultanate reinforced by the governmental efforts in further developing the vital projects and the infrastructures related to tourism, in addition to facilitating and creating tourism related initiatives.”
The country is investing heavily in its tourism and hospitality infrastructure as it aims to host seven million tourists by 2040, including 2.7 million in Muscat. Investment in the tourism industry will increase the number of jobs within tourism to 45,000 by 2020, as the country looks to expand its economy, moving it from away from traditional oil-and-gas sources of income. According to a projection by Colliers International, tourism arrivals to Oman will increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13 per cent between 2018 and 2021, which will be driven by visitors from across the Gulf region, which accounted for 48 per cent of guests in 2017. In addition, arrivals from India (10 per cent), Germany (6 per cent), the United Kingdom (5 per cent) and the Philippines (3 per cent) are also expected to contribute immensely to the growth, supported by easy visa procedures and improved flight connections.
A report by the Implementation, Support and Follow-up Unit has laid out the long-term strategies for key areas listed under Tanfeedh, the national drive for economic expansion, and plans to increase the contribution of tourism to the country’s GDP to RO1.5 billion by 2020. The contribution of travel and tourism to GDP in 2017 was RO849.5 million, or 3.2 per cent of total GDP, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council’s annual report 2018. In addition, this strategy also plans to increase private sector investment in tourism to RO1.8 billion by 2020.
Investment in integrated tourism complexes and mixed-use developments will run into several billion dollars. These investments are the fruits of partnerships with local and international investors, as well as leading hospitality brands that work hand-in-hand with the government.
The opening of the Sultanate’s tourism sector would be realised through relaxing entry rules for visas into the country, a large part of which has already been done. Unsponsored visas are now available for nationalities of over 67 countries, and lately include Iran, Russia and China. Indian nationals with a valid US or Schengen Visa, can also apply online.
A fillip for aviation
The recent opening of Oman’s new Muscat International Airport is expected to further strengthen the growth of the aviation sector in the country. The airport has a capacity to handle 40 flights per hour with 86 check-in counters, 40 gates, and 29 aircraft stands with passenger boarding bridges, as well as a new control tower. The decision to build a new airport was taken after studies found that there could be a 40 per cent growth in number of visitors to Oman by 2019.
The new terminal has a capacity to handle 12 million passengers per annum, which can be scaled up to 24 million, 36 million and 48 million in different phases if needed. The new terminal will have the capacity to handle large aircraft such as the Airbus A380 and the Boeing 747. The existing terminal will be used for low-cost carrier operations. The number of passengers at Muscat International Airport exceeded 14 million in 2017, a robust growth of 17 per cent over the previous year.
Similarly, Salalah International Airport also broke its record with a 24 per cent growth at 1.5 million passengers as a result of an increase in both domestic and international travel. Presently, the Muscat International Airport is ranked in the top 10 airports in the Middle East, with an average annual growth forecast of 8 per cent. Apart from international airports in two major cities, there is a move to attract tourists to the interior regions by building airports and other infrastructure in Duqm and Sohar. With Duqm’s new airport now open, projects at the heart of Oman’s future economic powerhouse are all set to speed up, further driving the Sultanate’s economic expansion.
A modern downtown Oman Tourism Development Company (Omran), the executive arm of the government of Oman for the development of the tourism sector, has been entrusted with strengthening and diversifying the national economy to support Oman’s Vision 2040 through pioneering tourism infrastructure and lifestyle development across the Sultanate. Madinat Al Irfan is the Sultanate’s largest urban development project and is set to contribute to Oman Vision 2040. In the years to come, Madinat Al Irfan will have major positive national implications, contributing approximately RO400mn to the local economy. The eastern area (phase 1) currently being developed by Omran sits alongside Wadi Park just minutes from the newly opened Muscat International Airport. It is a multi-use district adjoining the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre (OCEC), a venue for international conferences, trade shows and concerts. OCEC, which celebrated its second anniversary recently, helps the government to strengthen the country’s position as a leading meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions destination in the region. Talking about the current status of the phase 1, Peter Walichnowski, CEO of Omran, says: “We have different projects going on simultaneously. The first project is the Oman Convection and Exhibition Centre (OCEC), which is currently 90 per cent finished. The construction of OCEC will be finished 100 per cent by the end of 2018. This will allow us to fully open up to the international MICE market. We completed Crowne Plaza Hotel in 2017 and this year we will complete the Marriott Hotel which will support the exhibition centre. We have recently signed a management agreement with AccorHotels to open the first ibis Styles in Oman.”
Omran and Majid Al Futtaim announced a strategic partnership to develop the western area (phase 2) of Madinat Al Irfan. The joint venture will see the development of a vibrant mixed-use community that will serve as the new urban centre for Muscat. This new partnership plays a major role in Oman national economic diversification agenda and reflects Omran’s strategic role as a catalyst of investment that forges solid partnerships with trusted developers like Majid Al Futtaim to create sustainable urban destinations and significant socio-economic benefits to the Sultanate.
The new mixed-use community is located at the western area of Madinat Al Irfan and spans over 4.5 million sqm. The joint venture project investment value is estimated at RO5bn over a period of 20 years and is anticipated to create more than 30,000 direct and indirect jobs in the country. Centrally located in Muscat’s urban corridor, the development will become the gateway to Oman; creating a modern downtown for residents, businesses and visitors.
Mina Qaboos Waterfront
Complementing its hotel pipeline, the Sultanate has made significant investments in other tourism infrastructure facilities. In yet another major initiative, Mina Qaboos Waterfront project planned in Muscat port will usher in a new concept in port developments in the Sultanate. The new port concept is a kind of waterfront port catering to cruise ships, as well as investments in hotels, restaurants, cafes and so on. Omran and Dubai-based DAMAC International, inked a landmark agreement to redevelop Muscat Port into a world-class mix use waterfront destination. The capital expenditure of the project is estimated at $1 billion. The old commercial harbour is proposed to be transformed into an integrated tourist port and lifestyle destination that includes hotels, residences, as well as a dining, retail, leisure and community facilities designed to position Muscat as a top waterfront destination in the governorate. The proposed Mina Sultan Qaboos Waterfront project will include berths for cruise ships, a marina for super yachts and leisure ports, 4 and 5-star marina hotels, hotel-operated branded residential apartments, waterside restaurants, cafes and boutiques, conference and banquet facilities, entertainment and cultural facilities, fisherman’s wharf, and historic souq.
Investment in interiors
Plans to develop the interior areas of the Sultanate as part of the country’s long-term tourism strategy are now underway. Developing these areas was part of the government’s tourism plan under the Future Vision 2040, which involves economic diversification and less reliance on fossil fuels to guard the nation’s economy.
Under this plan, the governorates of Muscat, Musandam, Dakhiliyah and South Sharqiyah will first be targeted.
The government is focusing on developing employment for the future generation, as well as developing other parts of Oman. A key component of the strategy is cluster planning. The strategy will use five planning concepts, namely tourism sites, planning attractions, planning resorts, national interest planning and itinerary planning.
One of the most important objectives that the Oman tourism strategy seeks to achieve is increasing the contribution of tourism sector into the GDP, in collaboration with sustainable development practices currently taking place in other economic sectors.
Musandam has been earmarked as a coastal wilderness destination and Dakhiliyah as a heritage, nature and adventure destination, due to the presence of the governorate’s key UNESCO listed forts, castles, falaj systems and traditional villages.

Francine Houben and Dick van Gameren from the Dutch office of Mecanoo Architecten have been selected as the 2021 European Prize for Architecture Laureates, announced Christian Narkiewicz-Laine, Museum President/CEO of The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design.

Founded in Delft in 1984 by Francine Houben and Dick van Gameren, Mecanoo architecten is made up of a highly multidisciplinary staff of creative professionals from 25 countries. The team includes architects, engineers, interior designers, urban planners, landscape architects and architectural technicians, as well as support staff.

The European Prize for Architecture is not a “lifetime of achievement award,” but rather serves as an impetus to support new ideas, to encourage and foster more challenge-making and forward-thinking about buildings and the environment, and to prompt the pushing of the envelope to obtain an even greater, more profound result.
The Prize also honors the commitment and achievements of the best European architects who have determined a more critical, intellectual, and artistic approach to the design of buildings and cities.

Born in 1955 in The Netherlands, Francine Houben is creative director of the firm she founded—Mecanoo.
She has held professorships in the Netherlands and abroad, and in 2007 was visiting professor at Harvard University.
From 2002 to 2006 she was City Architect of Almere.
In 2001, she published her seminal manifesto about architecture: Composition, Contrast, Complexity and was brought as curator of the First International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam in 2003 with the theme of the aesthetics of mobility to the forefront of international design consciousness.
In 2010, Francine Houben was granted lifelong membership to the Akademie der Künste, Architecture Department, in Berlin. She was professor of mobility aesthetics at Delft University of Technology and also taught at the universities of Harvard and Yale. She holds Honorary Doctorates from Utrecht University and Université de Mons.
Houben also holds Honorary Fellowships of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the American Institute of Architects (AIA), and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC). She was granted lifelong membership to the Akademie der Künste in Berlin.

In 2014, Houben was the only Dutch person to be featured on that years’ list of Britain’s 500 most influential people by Debrett’s and The Sunday Times, who credited her for her unconventional approach to architecture.
In 2015, she published People Place Purpose, which describes the specific architecture of Mecanoo illustrating the way they seek for identity in a global world. From the texture of a local stone, to colours of a fruit tree, or rituals of inhabitants.
In November 2015, Queen Máxima of The Netherlands presented the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds Prize to Houben for her work.
Houben has published books and traveled to numerous universities giving lectures on her studies and practice.
In 1988, Dick van Gameren graduated from the Delft University of Technology with cum laude honours and joined Mecanoo for some time shortly thereafter.
In 2013, he returned to Mecanoo as partner.
His professional career was bolstered by winning the Archiprix prize (1989), the International European II competition (1991) and the Prince Bernhard Foundation’s Charlotte Köhler prize (1995).
Combining his work as an architect with a professorship at the Delft University of Technology, van Gameren maintains a critical approach to design by lecturing, and publishing regularly as well as making this research tangible in his design leadership as a Mecanoo partner.
He has a considerable range of projects in his portfolio including residential design, large scale town planning, laboratory, education, and healthcare projects.
His design for a radical and sustainable renovation of a villa near Naarden (NL) won the 2012 BNA Building of the Year Award, and his design for the Dutch embassy in Ethiopia won the prestigious Aga Khan Award in 2007.
Although known and celebrated as a designer of libraries, Mecanoo’s work includes numerous educational buildings, housing and cultural and civic institutions.

Since 1984, Mecanoo has been committed to creating architecture that contributes to a better world.
From an office that started out designing social housing in an era of urban renewal, the practice has developed into an international firm working across the world with projects ranging from the Library of Birmingham (2013), Delft University of Technology Library (1993-1998), the La Llotja Theatre and Conference Centre in Lerida, Spain (2004-2010) and—most recently—New York Public Library.
Mecanoo has over 30 years’ experience in the design of buildings, urban plans, landscapes and interiors, in which the public space always plays a central role.
One of the firm’s first key projects that propelled the office into international fame, FiftyTwoDegrees in Nijmegen, The Netherlands (2004-2007) is an 86-metre-high tower heroically rises from a sloped plane of grass, with a car park underneath, which connects the building to the surrounding landscape of the business park.
The lower eight floors of the 17-storey building then dramatically tilt at a ten-degree angle, as if gesturing invitingly to the city.
The bended tower then rests on the basement which includes the Plaza and parking garage.
FiftyTwoDegrees won a 2009 International Architecture Award from The Chicago Athenaeum.
Another early project, the Montevideo Residential Tower in Rotterdam, Netherlands (1999-2005) resulted in avoiding sharp contrasts between office and apartment buildings with monotonous, repetitive facades, and creating spacious, flexible floor plans for both living and working and an inviting street level.
The building is a composition of interlocking volumes, a section of which cantilevers over the quayside. Designed by Mecanoo and Labb Arquitectur, the La Llotja Theatre and Conference Centre in Lerdia, Spain (2004-2010) is designed as a monolithic volume that emerges from the Spanish earth.
By elevating the first floor and deeply recessing the ground floor facade, this creates a 16-metre-wide cantilever that protects visitors against the sun and rain.
The public square begins underneath the cantilever with the stairs of the neighbouring building serving as a spectator tribune during events.
The solid facade of natural stone is interrupted at the entrance where a sea of light penetrates the massive block, inviting visitors up to the first floor where the multifunctional hall is located.
A ramp continues to the foyer on the second level with a panoramic window viewing across the old city and the river. The entrances to the theatre, which also doubles as a large conference hall, meeting rooms and the 400-seat conference room are located in the foyer.

The La Llotja Theatre and Conference Centre won a 2011 International Architecture Award from The Chicago Athenaeum.
For the Amphion Theatre, Doetinchem, The Netherlands (2006-2010), Mecanoo orientated this theater in an open, inviting manner toward the city.
Its tilting facade is characterized by a glass incision that offers views of the red accents from the grand stair and foyers beyond.
A playful pattern of square windows interrupts the masonry facades of sand-coloured bricks.
The building is capable of accommodating large numbers of people simultaneously. The form of the main 856-seat auditorium is based on a horseshoe, with extra seating provided on the balconies.
The Amphion Theatre won a 2011 International Architecture Award from The Chicago Athenaeum.
The bold, astonishing Library of Birmingham was completed in 2013 and is one of the highest-profile projects in the United Kingdom welcoming one million visitors in its first three months.

Designed by Mecanoo and Sasaki associates, The Bruce C. Bolling Municipal Building in Boston (2011-2015) challenges what an office building is, proposing new ways of working and promoting collaboration and transparency through an open layout.
The existing historical facades of the Ferdinand, Curtis and Waterman buildings were comprehensively restored and stitched together into a bright new building.
Referencing these original buildings, the central volume to new municipal centre also embodies a time-honoured approach to craft in construction.
As a Bostonian building with a Dutch touch, a contemporary interpretation of classical layering manifests itself in the brickwork encompassing a number of different masonry techniques from running bond, to stack bond, to soldier bond.

Designed by Mecanoo and MAYU architects +, the Tainan Public Library (2016-2020) represents the meeting of cultures, generations and histories. Inspired by the local culture and designed for the tropical climate of Tainan.
It is home to the city’s cultural heritage, modern art, music, films and over a million books, including more than 16,000 from the Japanese occupation period and of course, is equipped with the latest technologies of a modern library.
An expert in creating outstanding libraries, Mecanoo’s design for the Library represents the meeting of cultures, generations and histories.
Natural materials, like stone and wood, rational yet elegant structural lines and a sensitive use of light and shadow characterize the building’s timeless design.
Reaching up into the sky, the building’s perimeter increases on each level. The result is a large canopy that provides shade to the transparent stepped facade and below-grade courtyards.
The entrance hall rises three levels up to show the library’s internal configuration and the layering of floors.
The wooden fenestration filters daylight, creating a rhythmic pattern of light on the stone floor. Curvaceous stairwells show the dynamic flow of people through the building.
The generous open-plan spaces ensure the library can be adapted to future needs.
Also in 2016, Mecanoo won the first prize in a competition for the visionary Futian Civic Culture Center in Shenzhen, China.
The 150m tower was developed with a strong connection with surrounding urban spaces, breathing openness with daylight and natural cooling breezes and filled with greenery.
This open public interior directly connects with the theatre lobby, which is the main urban catalyst of the cultural centre. The permeable ground floor, together with the two bordering main roads and metro station within 200m, ensures that the building is well-connected.
To give the cultural centre a strong, singular appearance, the building is wrapped in a uniform triangulated grid facade that flares outwards to incorporate the theatres. Scaling downwards towards the edges, the flared volume smoothly transitions between the 150m tower and the smaller scale of the kindergarten.
Likewise, the Shenzhen North Station Urban Design in Shenzhen, China (2017), also a first-place winning competition scheme, envisions twelve staggering skyscrapers, an elevated pedestrian network and a beautiful green urban park, giving the business district a distinct character.
The main buildings of the business district are set around a central urban park and vary in height between 278 and 428 metres.
By situating the transportation nodes on the subterranean levels, the public park appears as an open green space, something the area currently lacks.
Rather than define the exact shape of the towers, the design establishes rules which ensure coherency yet encourage a degree of variation.
The smart facade system of glazed, angled elements offers diversity to support the different programmes and respond to the orientation while ensuring the overall appearance.
Setbacks allow for the creation of roof gardens, which—together with interior sky gardens at some of the higher levels—integrate the urban park design into the buildings.
Sustainability is an inherent aspect of Mecanoo’s design approach, feeding into an ambition to create new identity in a world of globalization, resulting in inspiring and authentic places, socially relevant for people and communities.
For the National Kaohsiung Centre for the Arts (2018-2024), with its organic, curvilinear shape and landscaped canopy, the new Kaohsiung Station introduces a generous amount of public green space to Taiwan’s second city.
The station reaches out to the city in a powerful gesture, acting as a green connector that unifies different modes of transport, and represents Kaohsiung’s vision for the future as a sustainable city.
The National Kaohsiung Centre for the Arts won a 2020 International Architecture Award from The Chicago Athenaeum.
Mecanoo’s most recent project, The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library (2021) is New York’s new central circulating library, designed in collaboration with Beyer Blinder Belle Architects & Planners.
The $300m project is a handsome and invigorating renovation of the existing building designed as a department store in a glorious Beaux-Art style by Carrère & Hastings in 1911.
Mecanoo’s stand-out architectural feature is the “Wizard’s Hat,” a sculpted, painted and perforated metal structure that enshrouds the library’s seventh floor.
“For their integrity in their approach to Mecanoo’s buildings, as well as the way they conduct their practice,” states Narkiewicz-Laine, “and their responsible attitude toward the environment, their ability to be cosmopolitan while embracing the uniqueness of each place in which they work, for all these reasons and more, Francine Houben and Dick van Gameren are awarded the 2021 European Prize for Architecture Prize.”
Francine Houben and Dick van Gameren are the 15th and 16th Laureates of the European Prize for Architecture.
The formal ceremony and gala dinner for what has come to be known throughout the world as Europe’s highest honor for architecture will be held at a Gala Dinner at the foot of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece—the birthplace of Western Architecture—on September 10, 2021.

Goldrich Kest Purchases Sunset Plaza in West Covina for Nearly $45 Million with Plans for $6 Million Upgrade
(Project Is Company’s Third Purchase In Just Two Years)
Predicting a continued upswing in the communities of Covina and West Covina, Culver City-based Goldrich Kest, one of California’s finest and most successful real estate builders and property managers for six decades, has purchased Sunset Plaza, a 183-unit apartment building in West Covina, for $44.85 million.  Built in the early 1960s, the property consists of 15 two- and three-story buildings with a combined 176,028 square feet and offers studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom floor plans with balconies, granite countertops and air conditioning. According to Goldrich Kest President Carole Glodney, the company will invest more than $6 million to make full interior upgrades as well as other improvements.   The property features a number of amenities including two swimming pools, fitness center, movie theater, game room, courtyards, children’s play room, bbq/picnic areas and a business center. The acquisition of Sunset Plaza represents the company’s third purchase in the area in just two years; the others are the 116-unit Windwood Apartments in West Covina and the Las Palmas Apartments in Covina containing 102 units.  Goldrich Kest also owns the 312-unit Walnut Ridge Apartments in West Covina. “We are delighted to announce our acquisition of Sunset Plaza, which reinforces our commitment to the Covina and West Covina communities,” said Glodney, who added that the area’s increased rent growth of 4.4% and high occupancy rates of 97% and little new apartment construction make it an ideal investment. “We’ve discovered that many of our tenants find the area conveniently connected to many employment hubs.” The company was founded by Jona Goldrich and Sol Kest, both Holocaust survivors who have since passed.  They launched their company in 1957 with $200 in their pockets and parlayed that into an extensive portfolio of residential, commercial, industrial, and retail space. Among their projects are 120 apartment buildings with 13,188 units, 5 marinas with 2,139 slips, 24 senior living facilities with 4,248 beds, and more than 11 million square feet of commercial space.  Seventy of their apartment buildings accommodate low-income families and Goldrich Kest offers free after-school and summer programs to keep its young residents engaged and eager to learn. Goldrich Kest were innovators in their field having been major proponents of condominiums during their infancy in the 1960’s and building senior living facilities starting in 1965. By 1968, the company was a pioneer developer in Marina Del Rey where they built one of the first luxury apartment/marina complexes in what was previously considered swampland. In 1970, they entered the Northern California market by unveiling San Jose Gardens Apartments and the next year extended their footprint to San Diego with the opening of Genesee Park Apartments. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s construction boom, Goldrich Kest continued adding government-assisted housing to its portfolio and rapidly became one of California’s largest developers of government-assisted apartments. Aedas-Designed Zhanjiang Yunhai No.1—A New All-Weather Tourist and Entertainment Destination
Located at the southernmost tip of mainland China and being surrounded by sea, Zhanjiang is known for its unique harbour culture. In response to its growing attraction as a tourist destination, Zhanjiang Yunhai No. 1 is designed as an all-weather tourism and leisure resort, whose 266 meters tower will become the tallest building in the area.
The project is perched in the intersection of the three major urban areas, and closely connected to the city centre via the Zhanjiang Bay Bridge across the waterways. Overlooking the sea promenade of Jinsha Bay and the urban park nearby, it is an important city portal.
The design draws inspiration from the motion of a koi fish leaping through a dragon gate, allegorising it to the pioneering spirit and upward development of the area. Through volume shifting, the podium is designed in a streamlined wave shape, to mirror the temperament of the coastal city.
The project integrates its five-star hotels, apartments, retail streets, and vibrant leisure squares by linking a series of key nodes with extensive public space. The design is informed by Zhanjiang’s southeast monsoon climate and the daylight conditions to arrive at a parallel layout. The high-rise hotel and serviced apartments stand in the southwest of the rectangular site while three residential towers and one serviced apartment are situated in the north, where they face a peerless sea view.
A stepped landscape lawn is set on the east end, serving as a respite for visitors to rest amidst the greenery. From there, it advances toward the sunken plaza and segues into the indoor commercial space. Between the building and the lawn is a market space, which is reserved as a hub for art and cultural activities.
Approaching the commercial podium at the heart of the development, a modern digital art installation is inlaid along its east facade, protruding majestically to encourage interaction between people and architecture. In the event of a festival, it can be transformed into a lighting stage with a LED screen on the tower, bringing about an immersive, celebratory experience.
The vivacious retail space in the podium, open-air retail street, and outdoor infinity pool, offer a full range of leisure and relaxation experience, while the sky restaurant and hotel functions at the crown of the tower are designed exclusively for banquets and business meetings.

Where will F1 Vietnam 2020 be taken place?
F1 Hanoi Circuit will be made up of part of My Dinh Sports Complex and traffic roads in the west of the capital city. This is the first track designed by Formula 1 itself and Hermann Tilke, who is famed for the Circuit of The Americas and the Bahrain International Circuit.
What is the F1 Vietnam track layout like?
The Circuit has a length of 5.607km, including 23 classic turns inherited and inspired by the most attractive race tracks in the world: from the “the paradise of overtaking shots” Nurburgring (Germany), the soupcon “S-Curves” of Suzuka race track (Japan) to the “streets that forgive no error” Monte Carlo (Monaco). The track will also feature a 1.5-km straight, with speeds expected to reach 335 km/h.

EB 4.0: Believer. Mover. Giver. Lover. Forever. (Part 1)

Long before noontime shows, it was in the 60′s when Student Canteen pioneered the trend of variety shows of Philippine TV. The show anchored by the legendary Eddie Ilarde became a fixture for the viewers of ABS DZAQ Channel 3 back then.
Right after the 1972 Martial Law era, the Jalosjos family of politicians and businessmen set-up shop. Then came VST & CO, which has been one of the successful OPM icons in the 70′s, and even Joey De Leon started to dominate the 70′s through his shows on IBC-13 since he was one of those affected by the Martial Law when he was still working at ABS-CBN as a radio DJ.
The triumvirate of Tito & Vic Sotto and Joey De Leon started to plan out for a variety show. It was Joey coined the idea for the words ‘Eat!’ and ‘Bulaga!’ (Lunchtime and Surprise). Production Specialists, Inc, and RPN-9 teamed up for a winning concept. On July 30th, 1979, at noontime, a Variety Show was born named Eat...Bulaga!. It aired LIVE from LS 1 of RPN-9 along the old Broadcast City complex. During the early years, it started to just compete with Student Canteen, and even the trio didn’t pay their talent fees from the producers.

The early 80′s became a leap and bound for the show. They are in danger of cancelling the show due to lack of advertisers. But the arrival of Mr. Macho segment became a boost to the show’s ratings. It also took over its production to Antonio P. Tuviera’s Television And Production Exponents, Inc (TAPE). The show isn’t complete without a theme song. So it was Vincent Dy Buncio and Pancho Oppus composed the song, while Vicente Sotto III provided the music, and Homer Flores arranged the theme song in which the now-famous theme song has a recognizable first line that goes: ‘Mula Aparri Hanggang Jolo’, and it changed its lyrics to ‘Mula Batanes Hanggang Jolo’. The theme song launched in 1982, along with the launch of its nationwide telecast of the show from the Folk Arts Theatre.
Then came 1984, Eat Bulaga started to realize its ‘Habang May Bata, May Eat Bulaga’ slogan with the birth of Little Miss Philippines. It was one of the longest-running segments of the show that produced from child stars to successful careers including Ice Seguerra (formerly Aiza Seguerra), Julie Ann San Jose, Jessa Zaragosa, Gladys Reyes-Sommeroux, Pauleen Luna, and Ryzza Mae Dizon.
After RPN-9 is in dire of sequestering to the Government, Tuviera had to negotiate with ABS-CBN and it all accepted. In 1989, Eat Bulaga moved to ABS-CBN on February 18, 1989, along with 2 other TAPE-produced dramas Agila and Coney Reyes on Camera, as well as Okay Ka Fairy Ko (which M-Zet productions of Vic Sotto continued the series after its takeover from TAPE). It had a pilot episode at the Araneta Coliseum entitled ‘Eat Bulaga: Moving On!’
It also turned 10 years on the airwaves that time, also at the same venue few months later.
By 1994, ABS-CBN had to acquire the show, but TAPE rejected the deal, and it had to leave the network, alongside Valiente, another TAPE-produced drama series, but Coney Reyes On Camera retained on the network under their own CAN Television (under Constancia Angeline Nubla, her own name).
During January 1995, GMA Network finally had a home for Eat Bulaga after a landmark blocktime agreement signing was held at the Makati Shangri-La, attended by all of the hosts, TAPE and GMA execuitives. A series of plugs were aired on the network (including Totoo ang Sie7e) although they were still busy for the 1995 World Youth Day celebration in Manila where GMA was the host broadcaster and it covered for the visit of Pope (now Saint) John Paul II.
On January 28, 1995, ‘Eat Bulaga: The Moving’ was aired at the same venue (Araneta Coliseum) as the show’s pilot episode on GMA-7. This was became GMA’s prime program in the noontime slot after their failed noontime show experiments that were rivals of the show before: Lunch Date and SST: Salo-Salo Together.

From the debut in 1979, Eat Bulaga’s studios weren’t permanent before. It was at Broadcast City complex and Celebrity Sports Plaza both in Diliman, Quezon City. (CSP was also the temporary studios during their stay at RPN, ABS-CBN, and GMA), ABS-CBN Studio 1 (now Dolphy Theatre) during the 90′s for their regular broadcasts and special episodes were taped at Studio 2, and later on at the Broadway Centrum in New Manila, Quezon City which had been their home from September 16, 1995 to December 1, 2018. And now, on their permanent home at the APT Studios along Marcos Highway, Brgy. Halang, Cainta, Rizal that took almost half-a-decade to construct the almost P1-Billion state-of-the-art studio facility.
