How to Find the Best Nail Shape for You: A Quick Guide
Playing with different kinds of nail colors is fun and relaxing. But when it comes to truly making your hands beautiful, it’s not all about the color or finish of your manicure. To have beautiful nails, don’t just look at your polish. You also have to know how to find the best nail shape for you.
Each hand, finger, and nail shape is different, and we are all born with various features. However, with the right nail shape, short fingers can look longer and hands can look daintier, edgier or more sophisticated to go with a particular look.
Get the right shape that accentuates those beautiful hands with these tips on how to find the best nail shape for you:
Round
This type is the simplest and most natural look that you can do for your nails. It is effortless to maintain, especially if you have time growing your nails.
To achieve this look, simply cut your nails to create an arc similar to the arch of your cuticles. Then, file off any of the rough edges.
A round nail is best when you are after strong nails. If you have visually long nails even after cutting, this makes your hands look very feminine and beautiful. Gel manicure would look lovely over it.
Oval
This shape is quite difficult to execute. The form should be symmetrical, and the point is a little between oval and almond. If you file it too much, you could end up getting either one so it would take time to file your nails to get the perfect shape. It’s perfect for people with long fingernails who want a beautiful, sophisticated look because it creates a more feminine vibe.
Almond
Almond shape looks lovely on glamorous, eye-catching events. It looks a little like an oval, but it is more tapered on the sides to shape more like an almond. To make it noticeable, you have to have longer nails.
To get the perfect shape, make sure to ask your nail salon to do it for you. It is one of the most playful designs you can get because it works for medium length nails. When you get tired, you can turn it into a squoval – a square or even an oval shape.
Square
Square nails are the easiest to make. To achieve this look, just file your nails down and make sure that ends become perpendicular to the nail. It is one of the most versatile looks because it works for either short or long nails.
However, if you already have short nails, the square may make your nails look even shorter. If that’s the case, go for an oval, round or squoval to make the shortness look less noticeable.
Squoval
It seems the most natural because most people are already born with this kind of nail shape. That’s why it is suitable for both long and short nails.
For the nails you currently have now, you only need to file a little bit to get the perfect squoval shape and you’re good to go. If you want the square look but hate how sharp it is around the edges, this would work best for you.
Ballerina
As the name suggests, the ballerina is a nail shaped like a ballerina’s pointed shoes. It is a longer version of a square, but it is a little more convex with a straight tip. It is slightly tapered like the oval. Instead of an arc, the tip is flat.
The ballerina works best for people who love growing their nails long or for people who love going to nail salons. It’s ideal for people who love putting on gel manicures or acrylics to achieve a longer nail and avoid damage to the natural nail.
Stiletto
Via Pinterest
Stiletto nail design looks intimidating and deadly. Both sides are tapered to create a pointy end. It’s very dramatic, edgy, and can be best left in the hands of professional nail salons.
For this, you need the help of nail extensions or gel overlays to create the look. Your nail techs will shape and design your overlays to create the pointed tip for each nail. It also works best for gel manicure because the polish makes the design look more prominent.
Lipstick
Via Pinterest
Going for an out of the box look for special avant-garde events? Choose the lipstick.
The lipstick is like a simple square nail but only longer and asymmetrical, meaning it is just tapered at one side of the nail. It creates an uneven look that is too risky, eye-catching, and highly unusual. It works best for an equally experimental or innovative fashion style.
There are plenty of options for you to choose from, but what would be best would totally be up to you. This guide on how to find the best nail shape for you is just here to help you out.
If you want feminine looks, you can make your hand look dainty and slender by choosing rounder nails shapes like round, oval, almond or squoval. If you want strong, intimidating nails, you can choose between the square, ballerina and stiletto.

Emerald Street Literary Festival review
For those who don’t know, Emerald Street is a daily newsletter, in the vein of Lena Dunham’s Lenny, which acts as a guide to London and Manchester, as well as ruminating on everything from fake news to flat whites. On Saturday, I attended its second annual literary festival, held at South Kensington’s Royal Geographical Society, which had been beautifully decorated in a #PinterestGoals way for the occasion. Upon arrival, I headed straight to the marquee, where I was greeted with flamingo-shaped croquet apparel, cutesy messages spelled out in Scrabble tiles, trailing rainbow streamers floating in the breeze and book pages folded neatly into flowers (sacrilege, but I'll allow it for the aesthetic). It was magical. Within this serene, bibliophilic paradise sat many a prim-looking lady earnestly discussing Gloria Steinem with her friends or reading quietly to herself. I even spotted two women meditatively felt-tipping away at a table swathed in an invitingly blank drawing from a colouring book.
Owing to a targeted Facebook advertisement – thanks cookies – I had decided to sign up to two talks at the reasonable price of £5 each. The first was a discussion with the recently crowned Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction winner Naomi Alderman (The Power) and her fellow nominee Ayobami Adebayo (Stay With Me). Chaired by the novelist Kate Mosse, the panel chatted engagingly about the novels that shaped them, online criticism and the evolving role of writers in our social-media-savvy universe. I was pleasantly surprised by Alderman’s bubbly, carefree demeanour. Having read The Power – a searing feminist text set in a dystopia where women can administer fatal electric shocks – I wasn’t expecting her to be so funny. Her suggestion that you should “reevaluate your friendship” with someone if they don’t appreciate a book you lent them really spoke to my soul.
Before returning to the auditorium to hear The Good Immigrant contributors Reni Eddo-Lodge (Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race) and Coco Khan give their views on race relations in Britain, I ambled back to the tent to claim my free book – which I was entitled to since I had pre-booked two talks. From the six titles on offer, I selected Daisy Buchanan's How to Be a Grown-Up because 1) I'm in desperate need of such training 2) the author shares her name with the love interest in The Great Gatsby and 3) I've become quite partial to the often-schmaltzy millennial-self-help genre.
"It's so much more civilised than Stylist Live!" remarked a staff member as she handed me the book, which, although completely true, struck a chord with me.  Admittedly, it is somewhat unfair to compare the two, since Stylist operates on such a massive scale, but I did have some quibbles with the running of Emerald Street. Firstly, the envelope I was given at the gate did not contain the correct tokens, meaning I was ferried around several bewildered helpers until I eventually had to leave the building to collect the right ones. What I was most unimpressed by, however, was the free-beverage situation: everyone was given a token for a complimentary Aperol Spritz and yet I, as a non-drinker, could not cash in said token on a soft drink. I charitably offered mine to a few people in the queue who all swiftly declined. What’s a girl got to do to get a Ribena up in here? (Also, some branded tote bags would have gone down well but that’s neither here nor there.)
To pass the time between sessions, I settled down in one of the plush, mint-green armchairs and had a crack at the literary quiz, which I, as a voracious reader (my university supervisor's words, not mine), failed spectacularly at. I got the Margaret Atwood and Emily Brontë ones but that’s about it; my ego was restored when I spotted a group of festivalgoers sneakily Googling the answers on their iPhones.  I thought it best to pass on making my own bookmark, with the delicate crepe paper and instruction leaflet provided, because I was knew the toxic combination of a short temper and minimal practical skills would mean this ended badly, so I perused the Waterstones pop-up instead, breathing in the intoxicating scent of newly inked pages.
I was encouraged to see that, unlike at Eddo-Lodge’s book launch at Foyles a few weeks ago, there was a strong, non-BME presence at the race talk, which started with her and Khan reading extracts from their respective essays. It could not have come at a better time, in the light of the deeply confounding election results the day before. The pair interrogated white identity with their comments on Diane Abbott, shame and honour politics, and the victimisation of people of colour following 2016’s EU referendum. For Khan, “finding love is an incredibly political act” and her ambitions remain more relationship-oriented. I was particularly interested in her attempts to, in her words, “create a female, British Master of None” with her stories on seeking a partner as a Pakistani. “Here we are. On Tinder. Not getting dates,” she quipped, launching into an anecdote about how men use her to show how “woke” they are. Eddo-Lodge, as always, spoke powerfully about how “racism is at the heart of what Britain is about”. If anyone saw our future Prime Minister Jeremy Corbyn on Question Time Leaders Special, take note that he quoted her statistics about having a foreign-sounding name as a jobseeker impedes your chances of success. This woman is going places.
Emerald Street’s literary festival is a wonderfully quaint gathering for the bookish, with a calming atmosphere and pleasingly whimsical design details. I look really forward to seeing what they have in store next year.
