Been pouring over Fish Tank Twitter again, looking for show reports from Nagoya.

Mostly the response is really positive! The general sense seems to be that B-T has always been best as a live band. This is a different live band (with small bits of continuity with the previous band) but still an incredibly good live band.

The saddest news of all (for me) is that the Theremin seems to have been dropped from their live setup. 😭 But Imai and Hide both have huge set-ups of synths, onstage computers (maybe?) and Hide has an electronic drumkit much like Fujii Maki's which everyone said was really exciting. Imai makes great use of his MIDI guitar to duplicate the effects of theremin so there are still going to be squiggles of his trademark electronic noise solos onstage (phew!)

The most fuss has been made over the older songs they've brought back (SANE, Villain, Enfants Terrible, PINOA ICCHIO, Iconoclasm, Dead Heat) - but listening to SANE on a loop, it suddenly hits me that yes, this is the blueprint for my favourite Imai songs on Subrosa! A lot of fans reported that Imai was doing an MC routine with a handheld mic, hyping up the crowd to get them to sing along. (But the fans have forgotten / not yet learned the words!) Lots of jokes about Imai's longtime fascination with hip-hop and how he's turning into a rapper.

But mostly, the excitement and the positive reactions give me hope, that the fanbase remains loyal. That they are going to continue to have a following, and keep going, even without their charismatic frontman. That Imai and Hide are very much stepping up, and stepping into the frontman role, and that the fans are enjoying and moving forward with this incarnation. That makes me glad.

What if Buck-Tick released another remix album? What would the tracklisting look like? Well, since have released a couple of remixes since the 1994 album and there were some alternate versions of songs throughout the years (single vs. album version), there are quite a few possibilities.

Perhaps the tracklisting could be something like this:

What other songs could use the remix treatment? What other artists does Buck-Tick like or work with who could do the remix? I think Kazutoshi Yokoyama is an obvious choice as is now Cube Juice and Yow-Row, not to do anything like what they’ve done already but to really have full freedom. Perhaps the band could also tap Masami Tsuchiya, Yukihiro Takahashi, Martin Gore, Al Jourgensen, Richard 23, Lol Tolhurst, Richard Barbieri, etc. Maybe the songs could include Pinoa Icchio, Nostalgia Ita Mechanicalis, Dada Disco, Villain, Kyouki No Dead Heat, and Baby, I Want You. Normally I’m not into remixes so I think it could also be interesting to take my least favorite songs from each album and see what those can be re-shaped into.

Atom of the Future

-RANKED #3 AT BEST ALBUMS OF SEPTEMBER 2016-

Here I am with the second part of this month’s themed week in “Let’s Listen to”! Today’s subject is the twentieth album by the famous Japanese rock band Buck-Tick, entitled Atom Miraiha no.9 (Future atom no.9) and released on 28th September 2016. The concept of the album is inspired by the artistic movement known as Futurism, born on the 20th century, focused on the image of speed, suggested by the incredible technologic development occurred at that time, and the band incorporated it in the sound which they put in this release. And now... let’s review!

-Cum uh sol nu -Flask no besshu- (Cum uh sol nu -Another kind of flask-) [love and immortality]: the album starts with obscure electronic effects and the piercing guitar leads up to a dark and particularly exotic theme; Sakurai’s voice is vibrant and becomes more aggressive, for a blasting and beating rock track, opening at the best this album. ---> 9.5/10

-Pinoa Icchio -Odoru atomu- (Pinoa Icchio -Dancing atom) [irregular coexistence]: a fast beat opens this song, made in collaboration with the musician Takeshi Ueda, explaining the stronger rhythm and the relevant electronic elements, driven by aggressive vocals and energetic riffs, for a short and enjoyable song. ---> 9/10

-Devil’s Wings [aura of temptation]: a new take of the b-side from the 34th single, kicked off by an electronic intro, featuring a fast theme and bright vocals; the rhythm is pretty steady, where Sakurai’s voice shows off a sensual shade when needed, accompained by a biting guitar, for a really good track. ---> 9.5/10

-El Dorado [going towards the prosperity]: this song starts with a strong beat and an engaging guitar, followed by trembling and intense vocals, with dark shades, building up a complex and suggestive rock theme, made of powerful notes, worth of this band. ---> 9.5/10

-Bi Neo Universe (Beauty Neo Universe) [universe of beauty and violence]: a rapid intro opens this song, featuring a powerful and decise rhythm, with strong electronic effects, driven by vibrant guitar riffs and fascinating dark vocals, for a fresh song. ---> 9/10

-Boy Septem Peccata Mortalia (Boy of seven deadly sins) [immoral life]: this song is introduced by a really strong bass, driving an obscure and rapid theme; Sakurai’s interpretation is really articulated, between electronic notes and sensual tones, featuring even more aggressive parts, proof of his incredible versatility. ---> 9.5/10

-Jukai (Wide forest) [drowning in dreams]: a bright melody opens this song, with clearer tones than expected, where Sakurai’s voice is limpid and the guitar is strong and dominant in a flowing and relaxing theme, for a fascinating and nostalgical ballad. ---> 9.5/10

-The Seaside Story [nostalgia in summer]: a strong melody made by good electronic effects opens the song, with penetrating vocals, accompained by piercing riffs in a flowing and catchy rhythm, for a well made song. ---> 9/10

-Future Song -Mirai ga touru- (Future song -Through the future-) [the future is closer]: a strong drumming kicks off this song, with a whirling guitar surrounding an exquisite duet between Sakurai and Imai, inside a piercing and aggressive rhythm, for a great and beating theme. ---> 9/10

-Manjushaka (Red spider lily) [pretending that pain doesn’t exist]: this song has a slower and more melodic introduction, with a more suffused beat and softer vocals; the guitar is tender and creates a beautiful melody inside a vibrant and light theme, for a ballad intense, reinforced by the compelling bass work. ---> 9.5/10

-Cuba Libre [love and death]: fast drumming and guitar open a dark and pretty exotic song, with flowing and grotesque vocals, inside a strong rhythm and a decise sound, with clear and dark tones alternated, in a decent theme. ---> 9/10

-Ai no Souretsu (Funeral procession of love) [heading to the eternal love]: the longest song of this album starts with a growing melody, becoming more intense with a melting and powerful guitar, accompaining passionate and intense vocals; the rhythm is complex and articulated, driven by an awesome bass, for a deep and overwhelming ballad. ---> 10/10

-New World -Beginning- [the world is good and it can be better]: the album ends with a more electronic take of the lead song from the 34th single; the theme is opened by a living melody and a really good rhythm; the vocals are light and flowing, with a strong beat accompaining the good theme of this ending song. ---> 9/10

Final Vote ---> 9/10

Among the bands that shaped the Japanese rock scene over the years, Buck-Tick is the one who often tries to reshape what they had put out previously. More than two years after the last full release, the band crosses the twentieth album with something of curious and experimental, focusing more on the electronic side of their sound, shown in some occasion during their long career. Mainly the songs are made with this digital approach, not making them too much unnatural, which probably makes this release more interesting, experimenting and building up compelling and exquisite themes, showing off the single different variables of Buck-Tick’s musical world, accompained by names like the mentioned Ueda and Yo-Row from Gari, who mixed several tracks of the album, emphasizing the electronic component of this solid and distinct album. An album for who loves Buck-Tick’s musical universe, between strong electronic beats and obscure notes, different and efficient each time.

THIS ONE was even more trickier than Cum uh sol nu.   Pinoa Icchio  looks like Italian but doesn’t really mean anything that I could tell at first. and then it struck me.  Pino(a i)cchio…. Pinocchio with ai  stuck in the middle.  I’m not 100% certain of this one but it’s all I’ve got. ** here the kanji are written but the pronunciation is that of the Katakana script behind. WHY that is I don’t know. Imai is Imai. However I noticed some interesting play of words going on such as **** Ai no Crystal / Love crystal which if we read with the Kanji would be Ai no kesshou which is an expression referring to children ( equivalent to fruits of love ) *** So who the fuck is this Rachael you ask?  Well good question, given the theme and overall sci fi stuff going on in this song….I’d say that this is a clear reference to Rachael from Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? . ---- This song was hard to translate and my translation might be inaccurate. sorry.

2016 featured the most awaited comeback of visual kei in recent times, happened after four years, passed between other solid musical projects. The aristocratic metal band per defintion releases a compilation, including some classical hits, revisited, and two new songs, for a majestical product; in the older songs each note seems converted in something more powerful and engaging, where the new works can only enrich the structure of the album, where what makes it distinguishable is the incredible maturity by the excellent singer Kamijo Yuuji.

Following up the dark and seducing work made in Elegance, The Novembers bring out the sixth album, which this time takes its own energy from all the best aspects of their music. The melodies go from an extreme grungy rock, to an indie nostalgical ballad, adding even some shoegaze hints, belonging to their early works; an album which suits perfectly to old and new supporters of this wonderful rock band.

One of the most awaited releases of the year was the 20th full album by the legendary visual kei band Buck-Tick, highly anticipated by the single New World. With this release, the band explores their own sound, going through their darkest and rebel notes, breaking any possible canon and rebuilding at their own pleasure, between aggressive melodies and nostalgical themes, for a greatly structured album.

Along with the claimed band Hollowgram, the singer Ryo has founded another awesome project, made with illustrious names of Japanese rock scene, which already last year managed to be on my personal list. On the past year they released the third mini-album, where their compositions are deeper and more articulated than expected, continuing the work they started since their debut, with complex and technical songs.

Lynch. - Avantgarde (14.09.2016) [★★★★] (REVIEW)

Lynch. retakes their own style, after the dim and successful work made in the previous year with D.A.R.K. -In the name of the evil-, bringing out the ninth full release for them. In general it brings the typical energetic and powerful sound that this band always had, but with some avantgarde-ish things here and there (not fulfilling the expectations coming from the title), which didn’t diminuish the relevance of this release, from a band which is now passing a bad moment, because of Akinori’a arrest.

I Love You Orchestra - Crack (14.09.2016)

The first mention is one of the most curious discoveries I have ever done, represented by the instrumental rock act I Love You Orchestra. I admit that instrumental rock is not something which I listen to everyday (apart from some exceptions), but their style, well shown in the third album, is great and has an huge impact, with efficient melodies and rhythmical works, which will surely hook any new listener, as happened to me.

One of the most promising Japanese pop singers of modern scene marks the second mention of this month. Coming out from the success of the song Re:I Am, she developed an interesting image, fulfilled with her fourth album, a togetherness of styles, shades and experimentations, without forgetting the interesting duets with other famous singers of the scene, working perfectly with the sweet and pulsing identity of Aimer, a sure bet of J-pop.

The final mention is for the visual kei band Kra, which this time released something which appeared quite interesting. The twelfth mini-album, divided in two parts, unleashes the true aspect of Kra’s sound; Core is about their energy and positive spirit, while Cell is about their passion and deep feelings, for a compelling work, fit for fans and not only.
