Daily fish fact #651
Pink salmon!
Tumblr media
Pink salmon have an extremely regular life cycle: adults spawn from late June to October (depending on location, of course), their eggs incubate over the winter, and upon hatching in early spring the fry migrate pretty much immediately to saltwater, living and eating in the ocean for about a year and a half, until they finally migrate back to their home rivers to spawn and die at the age of two. Because a single fish generation in a salmon's family line is two years, every pink salmon population is essentially two separate populations, a population that spawns during odd years and a population that spawns during even years! There is very little genetic mixing between these two populations precisely due to their two year long lifespan.

SALMONIDS of ALASKA The bane of my existence for the entirety of 2020 and part of 2021: the salmon poster. You've seen the separate illustrations, but now, finally, here is the full thing.
This entire project was a journey. I had never illustrated fish before, let alone in this much detail. I have retained an appropriate hatred of scales and fin rays from this project. But also a persistent joy from having created these illustrations, and appreciation for what beautiful animals these salmon are. Putting together the poster, making all elements fit together and - not unimportantly - making the poster fit its allotted space on the wall was an additional endeavour.
It is currently displayed aboard the David B, the vessel of Northwest Navigation who commissioned this piece. If you're interested in having a copy of your own, you can contact them. For now I hope you enjoy reading this (if you open the image in a separate tab, I made it big enough to read) - and mayhaps learn something new about the intriguing world of salmon! I certainly did.

"Reverence" Oct. 2024 woodblock prints on canvas and paper
My salmon piece is done!! I'm so proud with how the installation turned out, and the studio critique went over so smoothly :)
We were tasked with creating a piece where we chose a cultural form to work with and "magnify" or "zoom-out" on an aspect of it. I chose to work with salmon and the act of hand-carving a woodblock print. I wanted to magnify the process of it's creation; how all the hours of time, dedication, and hand/wrist cramps are often overlooked. I also wanted to showcase the imperfections in the craft, and to still hang each "bad" print with the same kind of reverence as something considered "more deserving" would get.

Also, fun fact! the salmon I carved is a female, spawning pink salmon to celebrate this years' salmon run in my city :D

"Fun" fact: pink salmon were introduced to the arctic by the USSR with the intent of starting fisheries.
Over the last few years their spread has been picking up immensely. In a number of rivers they have significantly outnumbered Atlantic salmon. How much they actually compete is not clear, and native salmonids have been found to feed on their eggs. Their success may be due to climate-related factors.
There are also Alaskan king crabs in the region, introduced around the same time. Their impacts are much better understood; besides humans, they lack predators entirely, and actively harm other fisheries by feeding on eggs or feeding on them directly as is the case with native shellfish.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What also pisses me off is that they are treated as gourmet food, which is contributing to their spread because keeping them is prioritised and so there isn't enough pressure to extirpate them. And I don't get to have any crab because it's going to Dubai or some other places for rich people, which pisses me off even further. With the salmon I'd at least be able to get it affordably.
Anyways both species are expanding southwards, and the king crabs are especially concerning. AND A REASON TO BE ANGRY AT RICH PEOPLE BESIDES THE OBVIOUS ISSUES THEY CAUSE SOCIETY.
