How do you define yourself? When people ask you about yourself, do you tell them about what makes your heart sing, your hobbies, how you were raised? Do you tell them about your job? Do you tell them about your faith, the charities you volunteer for, your political affiliation? What do you tell them?

 

People are most often remembered for what they have done out in the world. Not their jobs, but their passions and how those passions are acted out. Essentially, your effect on others is most likely what will be remembered long after you are done with this lifetime. How do you want to be remembered?

More to the point, how do you want to feel on a daily basis? If you want to feel good about yourself, consider how you act out in the world. Self-esteem comes from estimable acts.  If you know someone that you hold in high regard, emulate their actions. 

Make sure that you are giving back, within the circle of your loved ones, and also within your community. Obviously, being there for the people who are there for you is important. Find something that matches your skill set and temperament that you can do on a regular basis, where you are volunteering in your community. If there is a group that gathers regularly, doing something you enjoy, don’t just join them, offer to help out – nothing will make you feel like a part of the group faster, and it gives people a chance to get to know you.

Most of us have been taught, at a very young age, to fear change. As a child, a certain amount of stability is called for in one’s upbringing, but no one ever thinks to help us adjust to the fact that change does happen and, as an adult, it is a desirable occurrence. This is likely because no one remembered to teach this to the people who raised us.

Regardless, change does happen, so we should find contentment in it. Frequently, change brings about the opportunity for new and better things, so embracing that change might even be warranted.

If we want our world to be a more supportive place for us, if we want to put an end to war, if we want to have inner peace, accepting what is and then working to change it (instead of fighting to keep things the same), will get us there.

On a foggy, cold, dismal day at the lake it's hard to see this dock as anything but the end of the path. We can step on out, look over the edge, and even imagine ourselves on the other side. However, instead of finding a way around this obstacle we immediatelty turn away, admitting defeat before we even try. Excuses that were floating around pent up in your subconcious, come forward like bitter truths; it's too cold to swim, I dont have a boat, that cloud looks scary, loch Pinecrest monster is out there. We never take the time to explore the problem as a puzzle and see if it can be completed another way. Our society thinks that discomfort is something to be avoided, when in actuality discomfort is a great tool to help us learn and grow. When you first rode a bicycle, was it comfortable? Your first day on ski's...easy? The moment you realized you were in love with someone that your were not "supposed" to be, super comfortable!?! My point is instead of seeing all of the challenges and discomfort as negative and depressing, perhaps you just need to unlearn what you have been told, so you can see them as opportunities. Just because something is uncomfortable or out of the ordinary does not make it wrong or impossible.
