5 time someone told Kent Jack misses him and 1 time Jack told him
/ Jack and Bitty didn't get together after graduation in this /
This post is in three parts because I don't want to make an Ao3 account and apparently this is too long a post for tumblr
Pimms week: Growth
@pimmsweek
1)
22nd December 2007 - Rimouski , Quebec, Canada
Kent Parson has known Jack Zimmermann for 5 months and 17 days. He's known Alicia Zimmermann for about two weeks less than that. And up until now , he didn't think Alicia was insane but apparently she is because the stuff she just said , Kent can't believe he just heard.
"Yeah, Jack is going to miss you when you're in back in New York , so we thought we should a group dinner before then."
Kent swears everybody can tell how wide his eyes are right now and how he's just gapping like a fish out of water.
"Alicia and I will also miss you , just maybe not as much." With this Bob throws a smirk over to his son.
And Jack, Kent notices, is red-cheeked and staring at his plate. Oh, Jack probably just needs Kent to tell Alicia it's no big deal and that Jack (and the rest of them ) won't have time to miss him. And Kent will, he swears he will tell her that, as soon as his mouth can work again.
After taking a drink of his juice, to buy himself some time, Kent tugs his lips up into a smile and tells her exactly what he planned.
His plan didn't include all three Zimmermanns looking at him likes he's the crazy one at this table - Kent is still adding that trophy to Alicia's award cabinet.
He's about to open his mouth to say sorry or something however Bob beats him to it and says "Of course, we will, Alicia needs a blonde companion around"
Jack hooks his foot around Kents ankle and at Kents questioning look , just gives a slight nod of his head. In the near 6 months Kent Parson has known the Zimmermanns he has never been so confused.
2)
7th June 2009 - Montreal, Quebec , Canada
For the couple of weeks Kent has let the thought of what happens after the draft to not enter his mind. The draft it self is all but a low humming thought in his brain.
That is until Bob had to go and ruin it. It a small comment , not really meant to mean anything more than a chirp , but to Kent it feels like a bulldozer entered his heart and left with it.
"Well, don't worry about that , I'm sure even with you two on opposite sides of the country, Jack will still miss you"
It was meant to be a joke. Making fun of how Kent is always by Jack's side. How even after the draft nothing will tear them apart. It was a jab at how Kent needed to be reassured of someone missing him.
Bob thinks that distance isn't something that will cause Jack to forget him. With how Jack has been acting lately- avoiding any mention of New York or Las Vegas - Kent thinks Bob might be wrong.
3)
17th February 2011 - Las Vegas, Nevada , USA
"Yeah, sure , I'll tell him."
Kent left the room for one minute to collect the take out and in that one minute Jeff gets a serious call. That's it he's never ordering from here again.
"Who was that?" Jeff looks up from his phone - wait isn't that Kent's?
"Is that my phone?"
"It rang so I answered it for you. It was Jack Zimmermann"
Kent grabs the phone , dropping the take out, and demanding Jeff tells him what Jack wanted
"He said that he misses you and hopes we do well in the playoffs- if we get there."
Kent started sailing his phone as soon as Jeff said 'misses' but still asks him "He really said that?"
"Yeah, I know right , we are totally going to playoffs"
"No, the missing me part?"
"Yeah, it was the first thing he said, then he realised I had answered."
Jack's not picking up the phone so Kent tries again.
And again.
He tries until Jeff gets annoyed and tells him just to leave a message.
Kent leaves one when he tells Jack how he misses him too that lasts about two minutes long.
Jeff never answers Kent phone for him again.

"Jack," Alicia said, taking a step forward. "Honey. What year is it?"
"2009."
"Oh my god," she said softly.
"What?"
"Jack," Bob said slowly. "It's... it's 2018.

Pimm’s Cup Anyone?
Written for @pimmsweek Day 7, a little fluff to round out the week.
_X_
“We have a couple’s name, you know.”
Jack blinked at the sudden change of topic. “We do?”
Kent nodded smugly. “Like Brangelina.”
“What is it?”
“Pimms.”
“Cute,” Jack admitted, returning his gaze to the screen where he was watching tape.
“Jaaaaack.”
“Yes, dear?” Jack chirped.
Kent rolled his eyes. “I wanna go to London.”
“What?”
“To drink a Pimm’s cup with you!”
Jack shook his head. “What the hell are you talking about?”
Kent shoved his phone in front of Jack and he pushed it back to actually be able to see. On the screen was a red mixed drink full of fruit chunks. “You want to go all the way to London to drink sangria?”
“It’s not sangria, it’s a Pimm’s cup!” Kent pouted. “Pimms is like, this British gin, thing. And you make this drink with it. It looks really good. Let’s go.”
“Kenny, the preseason starts next week. We can’t just jet off to London.”
Kent huffed a sigh.
“What’s going on, babe?”
“Maybe I don’t want the preseason to start,” Kent mumbled.
Jack frowned and gently lifted Kent’s chin to look at him.
“How about we make our own Pimm’s, eh? A little Pimm’s celebration before I have to fly out. You can even put it up on Instagram if you want.”
“Okay,” Kent said, pout still firmly in place. By the time they got to Binny’s, though, he was back to smiling and chirping Jack, excited for the next adventure. They located the red gin and the mixers and fruit they needed and headed back to Kent’s apartment.
“Can’t believe they had this in Vegas,” Kent mused from the passenger seat.
“You have everything in Vegas,” Jack teased.
“Won’t next week,” Kent mumbled, pouting again.
“Kenny,” Jack reached a hand out and Kent grabbed it from the air. “You’ve got me now.”
“Yeah,” Kent said and squeezed Jack’s hand. Jack stole a glance and found Kent smiling softly down at their intertwined fingers.
At his apartment, Kent quickly got to work making his perfect “Pimms” Cup in the perfect instagrammable shot. Jack leaned against the doorway to the kitchen and watched his boyfriend work. Finally, the drinks full to the very top, Kent pulled Jack into the shot and directed the shot.
“Thought cheers shots were ‘so 2017 come on Zimms’,” He chirped.
“Shut up and smile Zimmermann.”
Jack did and Kent snapped several photos with and without him holding his own cup to Jack’s until he was happy.
Setting the drink down at last, he fiddled with the filters and captions for a while, then finally put the phone down and raised his glass again. “To Pimms.”
“Dork. I love you.”
“Love you too, Zimms.” He took a tentative drink of the cocktail and blinked in surprise. “Huh. That’s actually good.”
Jack laughed and took a sip of his as well.
Later, he checked Kent’s Instagram.
Heard you guys named us Pimms so I made a Pimm’s for my Zimms. Love you, babe. Thanks for putting up with my shit.
Jack smiled softly at it for a moment before typing out his reply, a simple, “Love you too, Kenny.” He paused and considered, eventually deciding on a single heart emoji. Kent would appreciate it if nothing else.

@pimmsweek “anything” seems like as good an excuse for a field au as any so! two shots of kent and jack training (pre and post jack’s haircut because continuity what continuity).
[image description] two black and white pen drawings with limited grey shading. The first is two boys in field hockey uniforms a short corner battery viewed from further up the field: Jack (left, #1) is midway through a shot on goal that had been trapped by Kent (right, #90), who is now standing to the side out of his way. The second is the same two, viewed from goal-side: Jack is behind Kent and has his stick out in an attempt to block the ball; Parse has brought the ball nearer to himself and is mid-swing for a tomahawk shot. [/end description]
other notes for this au:
please note in the second image jack is defintiely wearing a fluro pink bib because he’s the Assigned Defender for the drill. he does not enjoy being defence, but he’s the only one who can keep up with kent and also not flinch away when he raises his stick for a toma
bad bob coached multiple olympic teams to gold medals but has since retired. there’s much less uh, huge press following of field hockey compared with ice but he’s still known within the community. technically for them to be like, pros they’d probably have to be on their national teams (and because of the whole canadian vs us thing, on different sides) but for now they’re together let’s let them be happy
jack played hockey for a club team rather than his school team, and started playing men’s when he was about 13. and then they just kept moving him up the divs until he was like, 16 and playing in the top men’s league of his city
they met at state reps i guess? junior nationals? i never got high enough level to experience rep hockey and also i don’t know how it works in america so let’s just handwave it and pretend it’s roughly analagous to what i know of aussie rep hockey ok? ok. kent was CF for his team, so he was taking point and staring jack down as he took free hits. jack learned very quickly that he had to hit very quickly otherwise this guy standing Right On The Five I Have My Hand Up And The Ump Said It’s Fine Just No Closer will get the ball off you before you could tap it and then take a shot
they ended up just marking each other out of the game half the time it was very funny and also there was A Bit Of Argy-Bargy but they were also willing to fuck around with the balls while everyone else was going to the clubhouse to get a drink then they added each other on facebook and spent the rest of the carnival when they weren’t with their teams just mucking about on the field in between games lol
then either jack moves or kent moves or maybe they end up on the same uni team or whatever, they end up on the same team and they are the Best but also the Worst (you know, playing jinking tennis while waiting for their turn on a drill, juggling the ball just Constantly, etc)
their short battery is parse traps, jack hits. if there’s a rebound, kent usually gets it, but jack is known for dragflicks that just. they go right where goalies hate
both of them take one-on-ones, duh, but kent is actually better at penalty strokes than jack. not that jack’s bad, he just overthinks them and they sometimes go wide, whereas kent’s hit the goal every time just sometimes the goalie gets there first
kent parson can tomahawk like a motherfucker. most people are like, oh shit i got it in the right direction AND it raised? nice! he’s like, “i’m going to put it top right corner then middle left post” and hits two balls and they go exactly where he said they would. jack can aim his but not to nearly the same extent. kent’s hits are comparatively not great so it evens out
assists don’t count in field as points. jack and kent have poached each other’s goals multiple times throughout the season. they are keeping count.
kent is an excellent centre half, he distributes the ball Very Nicely, Jack is a centre forward, but sometimes things happen and they get chucked into a wing/inner pair, wherin they just one-two it down the line. Jack as RW running the baseline dumping it up to parse who gets a one-touch then toma is a real dangerous combo
kent parson has mastered the art of spinning his stick in the air so that it lands on rounds more often than flat. no one can work out how he does it. it frustrates the opposition immensely.
johnson the goalie i think might be That One Guy Who Is Always At The Hockey Centre, You Know The One, who has at some point coached literally every goalie in the city and surrounding region and never wears shoes even when there is ice on the field

It's the false side of hope where believers concede
And there's only memories when it's over
They were the best of times, they were the best of times -Old Fashioned, Panic at the Disco
...
Kent watched the clip, Jack kissing the blonde he was vaguely familiar with, he couldn’t be bothered to care. Was this closure? Or did he feel numb again?
“Can I pour you another old fashioned?” the bartender asked.
Why did it matter anyways? “Yeah, I’ll take another.”

After an Injury (pimms, G)
Title: After an Injury Ships: Jack/Kent Rating: General Words: ~1000 Summary: [Day 1: Hospital] Jack flies across the country to take care of his injured partner. @pimmsweek
A bad check, they had said. An accident. The guy who did it felt terrible, said he was friends with Parse and would never do serious damage on purpose. Parse was on his way to the hospital with a definite broken bone and possible concussion.
Jack put his phone back in his pocket and tried to breathe. One of the media interns waved at him as they walked down the hallway.
He needed to find a more private spot.

summer.
so I was supposed to write this out as a full fic for @pimmsweek but the summer was so busy that i never got to. so instead, im writing it as a bullet fic. Canon divergent. Written for the prompt that was “Seasons Promised.”
Summer is almost like a lover. It’s inviting and warm, with promises of adventure. But it can also be near suffocating, with a smothering intensity that leaves little of a person left for Fall.
This is the story of Kent Parson and summer.
He was born on July 4th, in the middle of the hottest season, but Kent hates the summer more than anything
You’d think you know why. You’d be wrong.
July 4th 1990 was the day he was born.
His childhood went like this;
Fireworks and cookouts that were often combined with birthday parties. Kent’s mother used to tell him that the fireworks for him.
When he hit fourth grade, he learned the fireworks were for America, and no one but his little city block even knew who Kent V. Parson was.
It was a blow, but Kent could bounce back from it easily.
(He still tells Allison, his baby sister, that they’re for him secretly, but he knows one day she’ll stop believing it too)
Summer stopped being “Kent Parson’s birthday season” and turned into “more time for practice, since it’s the off season”
What do creamcicles and hockey rinks have in common? They’re both cold.
Kent learns to love it as much as a boy can, when he discovers he’s fast on his skates and quick with a stick
He doesn’t need to do tricks. He just has to know how to get the puck to the net and not get knocked off his feet while he does it.
(In a way, that’s a trick, isn’t it?)
He gets so good that his parents think he should play for a team, and play he does, like his life depends on it
His parents aren’t together some days, but his mom always makes it to his games.
The spring before his thirteenth, he learns his mom prefers to be called dad.
The summer of his fourteenth year that Kent finds out his parents are getting a divorce. He stops seeing his sister for a long time.
He asks why his father doesn’t want him. His dad tells him to keep playing.
He can skate through pain, after all.
(He definitely skates through the pain that comes with his dad sending him away to Canada to play on a team in Juniors. It’s all he can do.)
The summer before his first season on a Junior team, Kent met Jack Zimmermann.
Jack made summer bearable.
Jack was still baby soft in places, still smiled with his eyes, had perfect parents that let Kent stay with them when his billet parents had to go to Europe
Kent’s glad his dad doesn’t mind. He’s not glad when his calls don’t get returned, but he trusts his dad. There’s too few people in his life for him not to.
Jack Zimmermann makes Kent smile. He never seems to know what to say but when he speaks, he’s always kind
Kent wishes more of the boys on their team were this kind
He thinks Joey might be cuter if he smiled more
He thinks Corey would be hotter if he shit talked less
He thinks Jack is the perfect mix of both traits, without being horrible and demeaning, and that means more to Kent than anything else
Summers with Jack shape the rest of the season for Kent. They’re the most important.
They’ve only had three summers together, Kent is aware.
That doesn’t mean he hasn’t gotten better for having them.
The summer stop being a point of sadness for him. He starts... looking forward to them.
He doesn’t see his dad except in video calls during the season, so he looks forward to going to New York with Jack to visit him
They’re close and... they like to experiment.
They really like to experiment. Mainly with places, what they can get away with, and what makes each other feel good.
Kent learns a lot about Jack during the summer.
They’re young. They make mistakes. They live and learn.
Kent thinks, later in his life, that he didn’t learn enough.
That every defeat had Jack shaking, every practice where he couldn’t get the puck into the net wasn’t a celebration of their goalie’s skill, but a funeral for the death of his own.
Kent thinks, later in his life, that there was so little he could have done.
Thirty-four days.
It’s... the shortest summer Kent’s ever had. He had to grow up so quick.
After his birthday there was no slowing down. There was never a break, there was never a moment.
Jack would smile, but it stopped reaching his eyes. It worried Kent, but there wasn’t much he could say.
In hindsight, maybe Kent should have gone to college.
After all, what did the Draft have to offer him?
A team to play on? If he didn’t do the NHL after he could do NCAA, get a degree in something he liked and work that after playing four years of college hockey.
A salary? His dad could afford to ship him off to college. And Kent could get a part time job while he was in college. Not to mention the hockey scholarship he could probably come in on.
So what? Kent didn’t know. He thought it would make his father proud but after so many years, he’d stopped seeking the man’s approval. His dad was all he had and all he needed anyway.
Yes, the Draft didn’t have much to offer him but Kent... hadn’t dropped out.
Neither did Jack.
In hindsight, it all boiled down to Kent just... not knowing.
Kent didn’t know that it never really mattered who went first, that it was nothing more than a title, until later in his life.
Kent didn’t know that Jack’s anxiety was eating him like it was, alive, like Jack was a meal to be feasted on slowly.
Kent didn’t know he’d come to hate the sight of the Emergency Rooms in hospitals, cold, sterile, always inducing a feeling of dread in his stomach.
Kent didn’t know it would take him seventeen weeks, four days, two hours and eight minutes to stop feeling claustrophobic in his own bathroom.
He just. Didn’t know.
If he’d stayed in school, maybe he would have, he muses some days.
Now the summer was something to be dreaded. Spent in New York, on his dad’s couch, wishing he had never stepped out of that bedroom in Montreal, even for a moment.
He could fake the media smiles at the end of each season. He could fake his enthusiasm for being away from the ice. He could fake pride and glee and all the other emotions required of him when fans asked if he was excited for his birthday.
He could never fake the sadness. Even when he felt like he was.
It was something that settled deeper in his bones than the dead of winter did.
Kent was always his coldest during the summer, when he was away from the rink, away from hockey, away from anything that could have possibly distracted him from the freezing at his core.
The summer was supposed to be hot. Why was Kent constantly cold?
The Aces help. They help in only the ways they know how, only the ways that they can.
Swoops and Scrappy are instrumental.
Jeff never looks happy unless he’s got a chirp on his lips but Kent comes to appreciate him, too.
Scrappy texts him every day, like the guy doesn’t know how to put his phone down.
There’s always cute videos in his twitter DMs, of kids, of cats, of dogs, of animals, of old people, and all the in between.
Kent thinks if there’s a cute video someone wants to find, Scrappy can get it for them in a snap
It helps.
Swoops facetimes him every night. He’s done it so often that his dad asks if he’s had his nightly call yet when Swoops has yet to hit his phone up.
He’s done it so often that Kent’s dad knows his name, his face, and the name of his dog. Humphrey is always excited to see Kent, too.
And he always manages to do it when Kent feels like he’s slipping, like his grip on reality is beginning to loosen.
It helps.
Jeff pretends he doesn’t care, but his wife sends Kent a package every two weeks with his favourite desert desserts.
The hand written card asking if he’s doing okay that he finds in the box also isn’t written in Valerie’s swirling script.
Kent knows because Valerie writes the address on the boxes. Kent knows because her handwriting is cleaner.
Jeff pretends he doesn’t give a shit, but Kent’s had enough time to be able to read him like a book.
In the end, Kent knows that Jeff is always worried about him, always asking after him, always making sure he’s okay, even when he’s so obviously not.
It helps.
He learned to live, instead of just be alive.
He learned to get by, with all the aches and pains that come from a mending heart.
He learned to despise the summer less, even when he can’t bring himself to be happy on his birthday some years.
He makes contact with Jack again.
Or rather, Jack makes contact with Kent.
Tentative, slowly, with short text messages and calls of congratulations.
He wins a game. His phone rings. He picks up.
It’s Jack.
And isn’t it a testament to their friendship that it’s like nothing ever happened?
That it’s like there wasn’t a gap of nearly six years between them, because Jack went to college?
That Jack can tell him after a loss that it was a good game, and he did his best, and “You’ll get ‘em next time, Kenny.”
Kent thinks Jack shouldn’t get to make it that easy.
He’d had a life after Jack.
After the overdose sent him spiraling out into the ocean on a life raft too small for one body.
And he’d had a life before Jack.
Before Jack decided he wanted to speak to him again, after radio silence for so long.
He’d had so much to work through apart from Jack and Jack comes back and makes it easy to forget that his therapist says he’s allowed to be angry when someone ghosts him, no matter the reason, even if he doesn’t approach and doesn’t ask why.
He’d had to work through communication, when all he wanted to do was curl into a ball and never see the light of day again.
Jack makes it easy to forget he’s his own person, where he ends and Jack begins some days.
It’s not okay. It build and builds and it’s not okay.
Eventually, it culminates. As all things must, it comes to a head.
It’s fitting that it doesn’t happen until Jack’s on the other side of a door, and Kent has the option to let him in or keep him locked out.
Kent isn’t feeling like himself when it happens. He knows he’s disassociating when he’s staring at the door knob long enough for Jack to try it, wondering if he’s there.
Kent remembers asking Jack why he’d come. He doesn’t recall saying the words, and he certainly doesn’t remember moving his lips, but he asks.
Jack is quiet on the other side of the door for a long time.
He waits a bit before he asks Kent if he can come inside.
Kent remembers the next moment when he’s face to face with Jack, but he doesn’t remember how he got to the kitchen table, or how Jack sat close enough to him for their knees to touch.
He remembers to breathe.
Jack tells him that the radio silence is his fault, and he has no excuse.
Kent responds that he never tried to reach out after, distanced himself too. They’re both at fault.
Kent remembers July 23rd, when Jack stayed over and they talked about what this meant for them. They were in the peak of summer, but Jack was cool and calm, a soothing balm for the burns Kent was unknowingly nursing.
Jack wants to try again. Kent’s afraid of what could happen but he doesn’t want to let go.
Jack won’t push.
Kent appreciates that he isn’t gonna get shoved headlong into what could be more heartbreak.
He likes that Jack doesn’t promise he won’t break his heart again. It’s open and honest.
He loves that Jack wants to try though, to keep the organ beating and whole.
Kent thinks they spend days in that apartment together.
When they leave, Jack kisses him good bye.
By the time June 20th rolls around, Kent can’t wait for the official start of summer.
He and Jack have plans to go to the Bahamas for his birthday.
They bought their plane tickets and booked a hotel room in early March, after the Aces won the Stanley Cup.
It’s a reward, Jack tells him, for playing harder than any player on the team, a proud captain.
Kent thinks Jack just wants to make up time.
Both aren’t wrong.
Jack makes the summers easy again.
That’s not entirely true.
Kent learned to make the summers easier on his own first. He learned with his dad, with Scrappy, with Swoops, with Jeff.
He learned with his therapist, with time.
Jack just adds to his enjoyment of it.
He was born on July 4th, in the middle of the hottest season of the year, but summer is the season Kent Parson adores most of all.
It’s like a lover. It’s inviting and warm. When it’s good to you, it leaves you whole.

Kent shook his head, let out a yawn, and adjusted the blanket around his waist. "So, you two wanna fill us in on what happened last night?"
“Besides you trying to act out your third favorite Katy Perry song?” Swoops asked.
"Nothing bad," Rhetty said with a shrug. "We just basically got to see first hand how cute and gross you two are."
"Oh no," Kent said with his eyes wide.

Summary: It’s been ten years since the draft and seven years since he talked to Jack without their C’s on. But Kent is captain and captains pick up trades from the airport. So Kent goes..
Written for @pimmsweek Day 4: Smirk
I don’t have time to write for all of these amazing prompts but go check out the collection for other pimms works!
Thank you to Anna @halfdesertedstreets for the beta and the title!

Kent heard about the trade from management; it was his team that Jack was coming to after all. But he heard about the breakup from Deadspin.
Zimmermann traded to Aces, Dumps Boyfriend for Ex, Ace Parson?
Kent laughed and tucked the headline away for a chirp on his new teammate.
He’d been out since about a year after Zimms had come out in a Stanley Cup fanfare. Several other players had come out that off-season but Kent hadn’t until the next year. He just wasn’t ready for the combination of coverage about him being gay and coverage about his and Zimms’ past.
By the time he’d come out, he’d been ready.
Mostly.
Kinda.
Whatever, it was time.
The coaches sat him down and asked if he needed one of his A’s to take over captain duties for Zimmermann so they must have seen the article too, but Kent assured them that he and Jack fell out of touch a long time ago and there was nothing to worry about. They exchanged a look but eventually agreed. They trusted him, that’s why he was captain.
So the next day, Kent drove to the airport to pick up Jack Zimmermann, first out NHL player and Kent’s first boyfriend. Not that the two were related. And Kent had been telling the truth. He and Jack hadn’t really spoken to each other since Jack signed with the Falconers his senior year of college. There had been Captain Handshakes and interview soundbites but direct contact? No, Jack had made it perfectly clear he wanted none of that from Kent
But now they had a fresh start. Kent was going to make the most of it.
(keep reading on ao3 or below)
Jack ducked into Kent’s car with his signature pout on. His eyes looked red and tired. Kent was taken off guard. Had Jack been crying?
“Hey,” Kent said, opting to forgo his typical greeting. “How was your flight?”
Jack stared straight out of the windshield. “Fine.”
“Ooh-kay,” Kent said, drawing out the first syllable. He threw the car back into drive and pulled away from the curb. “You eat?”
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Jack shake his head, jaw clenched tight.
“I’ve got some Angie meals in the freezer, we can just have those?”
“Okay,” Jack said after an awkward pause. He continued to stare out the window as Kent got on the highway. Then he spoke again. “Is Angie your girlfriend?”
Kent barked a laugh. “She’s the team nutritionist,” he coughed out. “Jack, I’m. I’m gay. Still.”
“I didn’t know.”
“Thought it was pretty obvious with how much I had your dick in my mouth in our teens.”
Jack glared at him. “You could be bi. I am.”
Well now Kent felt like a dick.
“We didn’t really… talk much back then. I didn’t want to assume.”
Kent hummed, considering if he wanted to continue being a bit of an ass to mess with Zimms or pull out his Captain spiel. He settled on the latter.
“Well, welcome to Vegas. We’re really glad to have you here. I mean it. And if there’s anything I can do—“
“Kent,” Jack cut him off. “What the fuck are you doing?”
“Being your captain, Zimmermann,” Kent smirked.
“Glad to see you’re still a chirpy little shit,” Jack shook his head. “You don’t gotta do the spiel. I asked to be traded. I’m happy to be here. And, as you’ve so elegantly put it, we used to suck each other’s dicks in high school, so I think the formalities are unnecessary.”
That first bit was news to Kent but he tried not to let it show. Had Jack actually asked to come to the Aces or just to leave the Falcs? He decided to go for another chirp instead of letting the news get to him.
“Heard you dumped your boyfriend for me. Bit of a rash move, Zimms, you could’ve just called.” Another smirk.
Jack rolled his eyes. He’d matured a lot in the last ten years but Kent could still push his buttons.
“You wish, Kenny.”
Kent choked on air at the nickname and Jack frantically patted his back as Kent tried to keep control of the car.
“I’m fine.”
“Sure.”
“Are you, uh, okay though? That whole thing with Bi—“
“I don’t want to talk about it.”
“Okay.”
Silence fell in the car and Kent had no idea what to do with it. Finally, Jack spoke again.
“I missed you, Kenny.”
Kent stole a look at him but Jack was still staring out the windshield as though it was Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Championship.
“Me, too, Zimms,” Kent whispered.
It was a start.

just off the key of reason
for @pimmsweek day two: “spite” | read on ao3 rating: g | pairing: kent/jack | tags: juniors, angst
Practice had officially ended a while ago, but Kent is still on the ice practicing trick shots against an empty net. Across the rink, Jack is running some passing drills with a couple of the younger guys—the really eager ones who saw the “C” on the front of Jack’s jersey and the name on the back, and looked at him like he was some kind of god.
The clink of the post as Kent nails the bar down is music to his ears.
He gets a few more shots in before someone taps at his shoulder. It’s Jack, peering down at him with that little frown and the wrinkle between his brows that Kent knows means nothing good.
“What are you doing?” Jack says, voice clipped.
Kent frowns. “Accuracy practice?” he tries.
Jack doesn’t look impressed.  "Why weren’t you helping me run the drills?” he asks.
“Uhh, practice was over, dude. Why were you even running drills in the first place?” Kent counters.
Jack’s eyes narrow. “Bates wanted to practice some stick handling, so Williams and Rodriguez stuck around too.” He pauses and Kent knows this is gonna be good. “It’s not a good look when your alternate captain is goofing off while you’re trying to teach some core skills to the new guys.”
Anger flashes up, red and hot. It’s an argument they’ve had before and Kent is sick of it. “Oh, so it’s all about appearances, eh?”
“Of course it is,” Jack snaps. Kent watches as Jack’s jaw clenches and unclenches, and he feels a sick sort of pride that he’s managed to rile Jack up with just a few words. They had always been so good at getting under each other’s skin.
“Of course it is,” Jack repeats, after taking a steadying breath. “We’re the leaders of this team. You’re a leader on this team. You should act like it.”
“Oh, fuck off. It’s not like I had the “A” handed to me. We all know you’re the future of hockey or what the fuck ever, but some of us have to earn our letters.”
Jack goes impossibly still and there's a sharp twinge in Kent's chest—he knows he fucked up.
“Jack, I—”
“No, you know what?” Jack interjects. “Maybe you’re right. Maybe people see the name on my jersey and think a certain thing about me. But do you know what they’ll definitely see? They’ll see a player that worked his ass off to get to where he is, because maybe a name got me in the door but a name doesn’t lead the league in points. A name doesn’t have the plus-minus, or the shots on goal, or the time on ice. I do. Not my dad. Me.”
Jack takes a deep breath and Kent can barely hear it shake.
“I earned my letter, Kent, but you? What have you done other than ride on my coattails?”
Kent explodes. Ride on Jack’s coattails? Is he serious? Kent snarls, shoving forward into Jack’s space. “Where do you get off telling me—”
“Boys.” Bluesy’s voice echoes through the rink and Kent slinks back from Jack like he’s been scalded, retort fizzling on his breath. He glances towards Bluesy, who is still in the bottom half of his goalie pads, before ducking his head.
“Coach wants to see you. He’s in his office.” Bluesy pauses. “Everything good?”
“Yeah,” Jack says. His voice is back to that unaffected neutral, but the color is still high on his cheeks. “Everything’s fine.”
There are so many more things Kent has to say, but Jack skates towards the bench without even glancing at him and all he can do is follow, eyes fixed down so Bluesy can’t see the fury written across his face.
