I will write this thought about Veganism and Classism in the USA in another post so as to not derail the other thread:

There are comments in the notes that say meat is only cheaper than plant based foods because of subsidies artificially lowering the price of meat in the United States. This is...part of the story but not all of it.

For my animal agriculture lab we went to a butcher shop and watched the butcher cut up a pig into various cuts of meat. I have had to study quite a bit about the meat industry in that class. This has been the first time I fully realized how strongly the meat on a single animal is divided up by socioeconomic class.

Like yes, meat cumulatively takes more natural resources to create and thus should be more expensive, but once that animal is cut apart, it is divided up between rich and poor based on how good to eat the parts are. I was really shocked at watching this process and seeing just how clean and crisp an indicator of class this is.

Specifically, the types of meat I'm most familiar with are traditionally "waste" parts left over once the desirable parts are gone. For example, beef brisket is the dangly, floppy bit on the front of a cow's neck. Pork spareribs are the part of the ribcage that's barely got anything on it.

And that stuff is a tier above the "meat" that is most of what poor people eat: sausage, hot dogs, bologna, other heavily processed meat products that are essentially made up of all the scraps from the carcass that can't go into the "cuts" of meat. Where my mom comes from in North Carolina, you can buy "livermush" which is a processed meat product made up of a mixture of liver and a bunch of random body parts ground up and congealed together. There's also "head cheese" (made of parts of the pig's head) and pickled pigs' feet and chitlin's (that's made of intestines iirc) and cracklin's (basically crispy fried pig skin) and probably a bunch of stuff i'm forgetting. A lot of traditional Southern cooking uses basically scraps of animal ingredients to stretch across multiple meals, like putting pork fat in beans or saving bacon grease for gravy or the like.

So another dysfunctional thing about our food system, is that instead of people of each socioeconomic class eating a certain number of animals, every individual animal is basically divided up along class lines, with the poorest people eating the scraps no one else will eat (oftentimes heavily processed in a way that makes it incredibly unhealthy).

Even the 70% lean ground beef is made by injecting extra leftover fat back into the ground-up meat because the extra fat is undesirable on the "better" cuts. (Gross!)

I've made, or eaten, many a recipe where the only thing that makes it non-vegan is the chicken broth. Chicken broth, just leftover chicken bones and cartilage rendered and boiled down in water? How much is that "driving demand" for meat, when it's basically a byproduct?

That class really made me twist my brain around about the idea of abstaining from animal products as a way to deprive the industry of profits. Nobody eats "X number of cows, pigs, chickens in a lifetime" because depending on the socioeconomic class, they're eating different parts of the animal, splitting it with someone richer or poorer than they are. If a bunch of people who only ate processed meats anyway abstained, that wouldn't equal "saving" X number of animals, it would just mean the scraps and byproducts from a bunch of people's steaks or pork chops would have something different happen to them.

The other major relevant conclusion I got from that class, was that animal agriculture is so dominant because of monoculture. People think it's animal agriculture vs. plant agriculture (or plants used for human consumption vs. using them to feed livestock), but from capitalism's point of view, feeding animals corn is just another way to use corn to generate profits.

People think we could feed the world by using the grain fed to animals to feed humans, but...the grain fed to animals, is not actually a viable diet for the human population, because it's literally just corn and soybean. Like animal agriculture is used to give some semblance of variety to the consumer's diet in a system that is almost totally dominated by like 3 monocrops.

Do y'all have any idea how much of the American diet is just corn?!?! Corn starch, corn syrup, corn this, corn that, processed into the appearance of variety. And chickens and pigs are just another way to process corn. That's basically why we have them, because they can eat our corn. It's a total disaster.

And it's even worse because almost all the USA's plant foods that aren't the giant industrial monocrops maintained by pesticides and machines, are harvested and cared for by undocumented migrant workers that get abused and mistreated and can't say anything because their boss will tattle on them to ICE.

I think we a group need to consider what the early “zero waste” movement did in the 2010s. You know. They’d keep “all” their waste in a glass jar, live in a nice apartment somewhere in LA where they had easy access to a refill store and didn’t stop to consider that just existing in the US creates waste they couldn’t see.

I remember watching a video in 9th grade (around 2013) about a chick who did that and even then I was like “that’s bullshit” and it really turned me off the zero waste movement.

The inherent classism of a lot of zero waste purists created a wall between me and them, where instead of them admitting their privilege, they simply said “anyone can do this”. Most people can’t. A zero waste refill store does not exist in my state! Sure, I could try online but this is 1. More expensive- something my dirt poor family could not do at the time and 2. Creates more carbon emissions!

This isn’t to say zero waste is bad- it’s simply a standard most Americans can’t reach. I think this is why I’m so drawn to solarpunk, because I think solarpunk recognizes the classism that is in a lot of eco-friendly products and movements (something I do think is being addressed- I’ve seen more affordable products now than I did in high school). Solarpunk includes diy- reusing packaging that many of us still have to buy because we can’t afford the eco-friendly version.

I really liked your character analysis, especially Hobie and the interactions with Diane (she´s very groovy and beautiful n.n) so, I wanted to ask you if you think Hobie could make good friends with someone with a symbiote and the symbiote itself, my spidersona (symbiotesona?) is one of those. I know there´s some story between Hobie and symbiotes in his universe but I couldn't find the comics where it is explained.

Hobie is accepting of everyone (he's the best I love him) even symbiotes!!

In his universe, V.E.N.O.M was used in his universe as a weapon for President Osborn's police force - but I think Hobie would see the underlying greed and cruelty of the cops as the problem, and not the symbiote.

If anything I think he'd really respect your sona -

Cause that takes a lot of mental fortitude, and moral and strength in general so he'd be like 'That's fucking metal.'

If there's side effects, or conflict between your sona and the symbiote - I think he'd always want to help, and would like, speak to them as separate people lol

He knows that sharing the same body doesn't make them the same person, and that your sona was full person before the symbiote, so he would see them as a Duo - like two partners in crime.

He'd be really careful about his music playing and volume cause he wouldn't want to hurt your sona, so he would always give a heads-up.

Diane would be SO interested - and she'd probably have to think about SO MUCH, get prepared for a lot of questions!

Diane is pretty clever - but a little naive, so she'd be solidly in the 'All Aliens Come in Peace.' Star Trek started in 1966 - so Diane basically grew up with it around.

A symbiote is something alien, so it can't be murderous and evil - even if it eats people. It's not from here!! Don't be mean to them!!!

If your symbiote eats people, or needs meat, Diane would..honestly not be that freaked out. She'd have to think about it.

If humans can not snap and eat their pets and stuff, maybe this symbiote knows food from friends like them! If anything, Diane would be upset if people rushed to judge your sona OR the symbiote.

Hobie knows she is just repeating something she heard him say one time - and that is NOT what that phrase means, but he thinks its funny, so he lets her say it.

The three (four - actually) could have so much fun!

Hobie would probably get them hearing protectors so they can hang out backstage without getting hurt.

Sickness edition!

1. Can each one of them even get sick in the first place? I mean, Phil is a god, the Blade is a.. furry?? And Wilbur is a.. void person. And Tubbo is bees.

2. Assuming they do get sick, how do they handle it?

3. How do they handle other people getting sick and having to care for them?

4. There's this myth in my culture that, I kid you not, breathing above boiled potatoes helps with a cold. Rank how likely it is that I would be able to convince them to breathe above boiled potatoes.

5. How is Phil theoretically very knowledgeable in science and stuff but also still believes in blood-letting??

1.All of them can get sick, which is an overhanging threat in part 2 given the survivalist genre. Like literally Tommy gets a power up that’s just hand sanitizer and it’s a game changer. That said, they’re a little…odd about it.

Phil is trying to be a person, warts and all, and that includes getting ill. Now, does it work like a normal person? Not in the slightest. He gets sick when he thinks he’s supposed to, which included inaccurate theories people have had over the years such as displeasing the gods or being cold and wet. In the little more than a century since germ theory has been proposed he mostly gets sick in a normal way now. Phil is absolutely ecstatic about vaccines, though in all fairness home remedies with no scientific basis also work on him. He is observed using fire to burn out void sepsis in Tommy and Wilbur, though unclear if that worked because void or bacteria. And if we dig into that we’re back to germ theory with Tommy and questioning what an individual even is. 

The Blade gets animal diseases, and pigs and humans share a decent chunk of illnesses. 

Tubbo deals with bee illnesses, mites, fungal problems, all manner of things. Dysentery according to Wiki? They do have the advantage of having the awareness to guaranteed symptomatic bees to limit contagions tho. 

Wilbur can’t get food borne illnesses since it devours All, and also I speculate that it doesn’t have normal organs ? Fault never says either way. External diseases from mouth, nose, dermis, etc work perfectly fine tho even if Wilbur can get away with eating rotten food.

Tommy might be the least likely to get sick of any of them thanks to Red acting as a germ killer. 

2.Tommy complains and demands pampering. Philza takes a self care day but it isn’t very relaxing bc mentally he’s like I can’t take care of my kids oh gods- Wilbur ignores it if he can. If not is like welp guess I’m dying since if it’s bad enough he can’t get food or medicine or fight and so it was a near death sentence as a kid. Tubbo depends on where they are in their arc. Normally they’d be very normal drink tea maybe try some home remedies. During their spiral they’d just ignore or dissociate through it like they did with their injuries. And The Blade is NOT sick. Nope. Nah ah. Perfectly fine. Buuut every time he sneezes it triggers The Blood God since he thinks it’s an attack. 

3.Phil grins and offers to balance their humors if it’s not serious. Other than that is very accommodating and spoiling and totally not thinking about his countless loved ones lost to illness. He can gauge what is/isn’t fatal very well, but though the spark of terror is buried deep it’s still there. Rhodes fully comes out of Tubbo, do you have enough pillows here have another cookie that’s quite the fever kiddo.  Lots of home remedies, often involving honey cause well good for sore throats and antibacterial/good for infections. Tommy dithers since he really wants to be useful but Red contamination and so he mostly sits beside them and tells a bunch of stupid jokes to lift the mood. Wilbur is also going to take massive care of anyone who’s sick since that’s something it never got. More distant though, more like going on supply runs for lots of extra food and medicine, but is cautious so it doesn’t get sick too. Only The Blade is fully like like nah. I’m not catching a cold thanks. Good luck bro. He also dealt with the no medicine or support thing Wilbur went through, though wasn’t worried about losing fights and can eat pretty much whatever and actually get nutrition from it unlike Wilbur. Plus he isn’t keen on the chance of it giving The Blood God better access to control. 

4. Philza: has heard it before, has tried it, and it probably works for him. Stupid metaphorical man. If asked how he thinks it works he’d probably shrug and reply something about vitamins. 

Tubbo: they don’t believe it. But they also don’t not believe it. This is less that they aren’t a little superstitious about home remedies, and more that they haven’t heard about it and they know ALL the home remedies so it clearly can’t work or else they’d’ve already used it. But they would still use it. Again this is pure Rhodes, because he wants to take care of his kiddos and Tubbo heavily associates sick days with him staying home to look after them. I can too write a healthy paternal figure! (We’re ignoring chapter 13 it can’t hurt us if we don’t acknowledge it).

Tommy: I mean he’s a lil dumb, maybe. He’d definitely poke fun while trying it just in case he’s getting pranked. 

Wilbur: doesn’t believe it for a second. It’s more a mixture of trust issues than the fact it understands how medicine works. Actually wait. How does Wilbur think that works. Because a lot of it is eaten/swallowed. Like Wil tends to be the unofficial healer of the group alongside Phil, but his experience is purely ‘birthed from the crucible of need that forces experience whether one is read for it or not’ or however that one line goes. Cause it’s gotta be a mix of reading the back of pill bottles and Foundation stuff and void trivia so I gotta imagine that man has no idea why what it’s doing works. 

The Blade: has already eaten the potatoes before you even get around to explaining.

5.Phil’s knowledge of science is filled with a LOT of misinformation and it’s hard for him to keep track. Plus if utterly convinced something would heal him it genuinely will, and confirmation bias is a hell of a drug. I also believe he suggests blood-letting 100% to mess with people. There’s a deleted scene where he almost convinces Tubbo he can’t write in English because he ‘didn’t think it would be important’ and ‘clay tablets are going to come back any day now’. I think (aside from the murder) Phil often gets pigeon holed as the well adjusted mentor figure. Sort of a Kermit the Frog thing where the crazy cast of colorful characters kinda drowns out the fact that he’s the crazy nut job who decided to hire them all, and subtly thrives on chaos.

nostalgic pb&j and uneaten cheeseburger

food motifs abounds in s9, a season where angels were unsubtly compared to apex predators (in all the meanings of the word, angels are "monsters with good pr") and where cain (apex predator extraordinaire, father of murder AND farming) is a beekeeper.

angels on earth are sadly feeding off human souls and hunting down the perfect matches that can contain them. a good chunk of them are downright parasites and they all remind me of a virus: a hunter creature that needs a host to live. if the heavenly host has its gates shut down the angels are definitely not above using different methods of energy siphoning.

castiel and sam are two good examples of strong vessels and in no time angels seek them out, con them and try to sneak into their meatsuits. it doesn't work for cas but in sam's case they were successful. (i'm not gonna enter the gadreel arena right now but i just want to note that no angel looked for the michael's sword: interesting, though, that he ends up with the first blade, an object hidden in the depths of the ocean ((this thing with dean and oceans/submarines/things locked and thrown into deep-sea spaces is quite beautiful. i mean very. very sad but beautiful nonetheless considering that water is the number one maternal symbol)).

while sam is the unfortunate guinea pig/food metaphor in this scenario, castiel, who escaped possession, learns the joy of eating. he eats a lot of stuff, even toothpaste. he loves burritos. but what he loves the most are pb&j.

pb&j was the food april (i'm also not gonna go there now for my own mental health) offered him in his hour of need, when his newly found basic needs weren't met and when he felt the most lonely and vulnerable. pb&j is thus also associated with the exploration of sex (good idea, awful. awful execution) since this is what he does with april. and since april is a reaper who kills him, food, sex and death get all tangled up in one thing, 3 letters: p b and j, the human trifecta.

so when cas eats something else (the grace of one of his own) and becomes an angel again he's cut off from human experiences (except fear, anger, hurt, grief, getting manipulated and lied to cause apparently those are universal things and the human experience is reduced to the sensual and the physical realms, the sole things that can bring some joy while happiness seem nowhere to be found in all species. but that's for another day).

becoming a born-again angel (and the prey that eats its predator) makes castiel nostalgic of his time as a human. a pb&j sandwich just doesn't taste the same now. which seems a paradox since his time as human was nothing but pain but i digress (i'm not 100% sure castiel has ever come close to the rationalization of the tons of abuse he had to suffer). because cas has learnt something as a "human" and that's what counts. he's not the same as he was before. he has changed.

cheeseburgers, on the other hand, are dean's favorite. they mean what they mean to every human: many things. The joy of eating and sharing convivial moments, a refuge from the pain, a coping mechanism, a way to keep the body alive in the ways one can afford etc. as i said, many, many things.

they're also the food dean refuses to eat in "my bloody valentine", an episode about the emptiness, the void and the darkness one can feel inside. the same episode where an unusual castiel scarfs down hundreds of cheeseburgers.

in other words, when dean refuses a cheeseburger... when he leaves one uneaten... things are not good. even crowley knows this and seeing dean leaving the food untouched marks his moment of glory.

an uneaten cheeseburger means dean's too detached from human experiences, too close to jump to the other side. and, unfortunately, this ia exactly what happens: if castiel was seduced and killed by april, dean is seduced by crowley and eventually got killed as a result.

the way to becoming a demon makes dean leave his uneaten cheeseburger, his human life in a little nutshell. he's also not the same as before. he has changed.

there's like. a lot. to say about the food motifs in s9. i find it very interesting and helps me enjoy the season and engage with it in a critical way that doesn't depress me every minute of every episode.

Description:

BloodWings have forked black tongues with scales in various shades of red, such as blood red, dark red, and even to the point they’re almost black. They have red or light red underbellies, and red eyes. Rarely, some might even have orange or yellow eyes. They have black, gray, or white spikes running from their forehead down to their tail, which have spikes ending in very sharp tips. BloodWings also have vampire-like fangs, large ears, spikes behind their forelegs and a large one on their chest. They are large, muscular, and broad dragons, bigger compared to the other tribes.

Diet:

BloodWings feed off of blood from living creatures, such as bears, wild pigs, monkeys, moose, gorillas, and wolves, and occasionally eat meat, which does not give them that much energy. Most find pleasure in killing, and the blood is essential to their abilities and growth.

Abilities:

BloodWings are a selectively nocturnal tribe as they burn in the sun. They can leech the life out of other living beings, have dark elemental powers, turn into bats, and have great hearing and the second best night vision, only outclassed by the HydroWings.

They have long, white vampire fangs that sink into organisms' flesh, sucking the blood and life out of them and empowering the BloodWing.

Their dark powers allow them to manipulate and corrupt others, use dark elemental attacks, destroy, and poison others.

Like bats, they can use echolocation as a better way to see things.

They are excellent in hand-to-hand combat as well.

Animus magic:

There have never been any traces of animus BloodWings.

Society:

BloodWings raised in Pontalo are taught and raised to believe they are stronger, superior, and smarter than the other tribes, and because of that, the others should be exterminated. They put in a lot of effort to make sure their tribe is shrouded in mystery from the other tribes, to the point that not even everyone knows the full extent of their powers. BloodWing dragonets are not allowed to go outside of the kingdom, in order to keep their secrets as well as stop them from being brash. BloodWings are only to be seen in the mainland when attacking other tribes, and hidden in their kingdom when not.

Many posters of propaganda and several types of propaganda are used in the kingdom.

Dragonets are trained to become killers at a young age, and a game BloodWing dragonets play is competing against each other to see who gets the biggest kill.

BloodWings can be assassins, soldiers, hunters, guards, and other jobs.

Most BloodWings are unable to read, or taught to read only selective texts.

BloodWings are separated into classes, like the IceWing circle system. Their society is most like the IceWings.

Some BloodWings have fled to the mysterious land to escape the classes, the fights, the wars in desperation, and they are forever banished and scorned. As a result, BloodWings born outside of Pontalo aren’t as bad, depending on how they are raised. They usually don’t think they are superior, and have some of their powers suppressed. They also do not rely on drinking blood as much, causing their powers to weaken. This has caused the development of the subspecies, the SwordWings.

Names:

BloodWings are typically named after evil, or names meaning evil things, examples being Abaddon and Diabolos. They can also be named after bat species, their personalities or proficiencies, or related to fighting or war, like Chaos.

Trivia (+ SwordWing stuff):

SwordWings have put their efforts to completely stop using their dark powers and rely solely on hand-to-hand combat, using tools and weapons like swords, armor, etc, to the point that to some, their armor has fused to their scales, or ‘true’ SwordWings.

BloodWings are probably the most unique and original Pontalo tribe, alongside the LightWings and LightningWings, as they all aren’t ancestors of the Pyrrhian tribes.

SwordWings have faded red colors and the eye color rarities are switched; yellow and orange are common whereas red is rare.

SwordWings were nearly wiped out by Pontalonian BloodWings and the Shadow Tribe after they found out of their existence. They were ruled by King Sharp, first and only king, and his two dragonets, Dauntless and Knight, are the last (known) remaining SwordWings currently.

SwordWing society was all about justice and defeating evil. They had sworn their allegiance to the Light Tribe, who allowed them under their protection, but they were ambushed by the Shadow Tribe and wiped. King Sharp banished the use of dark magic when he established the tribe.

SwordWing names relate to bravery, or their weapons, or roles. They do not have a specific naming scheme, honestly. Some examples are Valor, Resolute, and of course Sharp, Dauntless, and Knight.

BloodWings are distantly related to MoonWings.

Overall, the poem takes to exploring the themes of isolation, existential contemplation, how self love improves love to others and the harshness of the natural world. When it comes to poetry, I'm a big fan of romantic poets (Walt Whitman, William Blake and Lord Byron) who tackle the power of humanity verses the power of nature. Crane does exactly this in In The Desert, but in a really self depricating way.

First off, desert symbolism! The desert serves as a metaphor for the harsh and barren aspects of life. It's a place of isolation and challenges, reflecting the difficulties and struggles individuals face in their existence. Therefore, the desert can be a metaphor for multiple things within context; depression, general self-isolation, a toxic relationship etc. In the desert, you don't really expect to meet anybody there, so, you act how you do when no one's watching; a time when a person is at their most vunerable, which links to why the creature is "naked". It represent vulnerability and or a state of raw, unguarded honesty. Stripped of societal constructs, the creature is exposed in its truest form. It is patient zero; Cain at ground level.

And then the heart. The heart is and will always be powerful symbol in literature, typically coming with a story of love. However! Crane does something different with it; his creature chews, bites and swallows it. The act of eating the heart symbolises someone confronting and consuming their own emotions or experiences; having The Human Experience.

Since the poem is in first person, it also puts the reader directly into it, meaning we are the ones to ask the creature if "it is good", addressing it like an old friend we haven't seen in a while. And the response we get is odd. You'd think a thing, hunched over in the sand eating its own heart would either be enjoying it to no extent or suffering, but the response is simply "bitter". The repeated emphasis on bitterness suggests a recognition of life's hardships and challenges. The creature acknowledges the bitterness of his own heart, and yet, there's a sense of acceptance or even appreciation for that bitterness. It's not enjoyment or absolute hatred; it's an acceptance.

Further, human flesh is known to have a bitter taste to it (along with the ever present taste of chicken/pig that seems to follow ever meat ever lmao), including the heart. Humans are typically hard-wired against canabalism (which, here, becomes self destruction. It takes a lot to push a human over the edge to start harming themselves deliberately) because it makes us ill to the point death is conceivable. The creature knows this, but accepts it.

Lastly, the creature takes ownership of his bitter heart, stating "But I like it / Beacuse it is bitter/ Because it is my heart." Now, the creature confirms enjoyment, and it signifies the acceptance of personal struggles and the acknowledgment that one's experiences, no matter how bitter, are an integral part of who they are.

When I talked about 'cannabalism as a metaphor for love' in my repost about this, I meant it for self-love, and how it's needed for things to get better.

Looking back on it all, I think, to actually answer your question Kate, is it reflects a lot of the stuff I struggle with internally. I find it hard to accept who and what I am and the anger I have towards myself, being pushed onto other people, which leaves me isolated; In The Desert. I have issues sometimes with seeing myself as human, so, unironically, I relate to the creature a lot. Plus, it's interesting that Crane decided that a good presentation for humanity is a naked creature, sat, completely vunerable, in the middle of an isolated desert.

Hey fellow Shade enjoyer! Do you have anymore lore about him? Or headcanons? Or just random stuff you wanna share about him that you haven't gotten the chance to?

This escaped me so it's mostly world building but surrounding Shade, sorry. This is so stupid, but like here is the elaboration on the whole phantom! Shade thing, as well as the split personality headcanon. Thanks @purplecherryuwu for roleplaying with me lmao, that really helped me flesh this out a lot

Trigger warnings: Trauma and violence mentions, nothing in detail but yeah. I'll warn for more if need be. Also, slightly incoherent ramblings. I wrote this at midnight.

So in Ninjago there are a bunch of different types of fae (creatures who can manipulate magic and need it to survive). These include fairies, sirens, elves, giants, and phantoms.

They lived in communities with mages (what magic users are called), and they tend to have kids with mages if they have children with humans.

For this post, since it focuses on Shade, we're gonna focus on phantoms.

Phantoms are typically connected to death and violence, and phantoms are considered to be very good at fighting, due to having enhanced strength and senses. Considered to be very intelligent, especially in terms of strategy, almost like their brain is hardwired for it. However, in exchange for book smarts and battle prowess, they tend to be very volatile and resort to violence as the first move to a solution.

They are considered 'disturbing' to look at, due to having humanoid faces but they are cool colors such as blue and grey and covered in feathers with the bottom of their face elongated out similar to a beak, with it being hard like a beak.

They also are skeletal and covered in feathers, with massive elliptical wings that have feathers detached in order to be use as weapons, in tandem with their massive talons.

(If you wanna seea bit of the inspo, here is one. No real clue what it's from but you can check out the blog if you wanna. Also, the feathers being weapons comes from Hawks from My Hero Academia).

Anyway, they tend to have a lot of bird traits, like always being in motion (ex flying, hopping) and chirping and wanting to grab shiny things and hunt small things. They can't eat birds, cows or pigs, but they can eat fish, vegetables, small creatures, and other fae/humans, including dead phantoms.

They always have the whispers of Lady Magic in their head. Lady Magic is basically the First Spinjitzu Master for mages, and she gives people magic if they don't wanna be crazy from it (like Clouse is).

Phantoms are considered rare by those who don't have magic, but they just tend to be reclusive from non-mages since there was a bunch of hunts for mages (similar to the Salem Witch Trials I think) after the Serpentine Wars that wiped out a good portion of mages.

Anyway, Shade is part phantom, and he hides a lot of the traits on a day to day basis, especially when he isn't with people he knows very well. He can detach the feathers on his body and magic away his wings, and he always has gloves on and cuts his talons to the bone in order to hide them. And being pescetarian isn't that weird. So the only real trait that is always present is the grey skin and the instincts.

Which, whoo, they are not fun for Shade. He always want to grab shiny things (when he was younger he would grab people with a lot of jewelry since they were shiny to him). He never can sit still, always hungry and he likes to be high up.

The worst part is actually his phantom. Basically, for a normal fae/human hybrid with 50% or more creature, they have a distinct voice in their head of their creature trying to encourage them to do things based on their instincts. Examples include for siren hybrids running away to live in the ocean or singing in order to hypnotize someone to escape, and fairy hybrids to fly around instead of walking and manipulate nature to their benefit. They tend to be very defensive and want the body safe at all costs.

This is because Lady Magic trying to be nice and giving them a bit of a step up in the world.

Normally the creature is only a voice in their head, and it doesn't have any real control over the body. It also doesn't tend to have much of a personality and tend to be a similar age to the human. If you read Harry Potter fic, it's like how Moony is portrayed in regards to Remus.

For Shade, and other hybrids who experienced trauma as a child that caused dissociate, however, their creature can take over the body. It's a defensive mechanism, in order to prevent the mind from breaking. This causes the creature to start to form a personality, and age oddly in comparison, since they aren't always present, unlike normal hybrids.

So for Shade, his phantom goes by either Phantom/Phoenix, depending on the au I write him in. Pronouns are he/it, but most people refer to it as he. He tends to be a few years younger than Shade, but I tend to write it more childlike if I call him Phoenix, since that meant he started to come out when Shade was a kid and therefore stopped aging normally as a kid. It is very protective over Shade, to the point of attacking anyone who tries to come close to him that he think he can fight and that Shade won't care if it killed.

(Also, shoutout to @purplecherryuwu for helping me come up with Phoenix as his name because before it was just Phantom)

However, it also is very traumatized, due to sometimes not being able to fight his way out of some situations, so it stayed out and experienced it all. When it's out, Shade doesn't know much, if anything, of what happens if Phoenix/Phantom doesn't tell him.

In some aus, Phantom/Phoenix starts to come out when Shade isn't dissociating, because Shade can give control to him if he wants to, but he doesn't like doing that since he likes to have control. In these aus, he does start learning more about the world and he starts to be less volatile and get help, as well become closer to Shade's age mentally.

Anyway, I have so many angst ideas relating to that whole headcanon you have no idea.

Also, to clarify, this is not applicable to every fic I write. Sometimes Phantom/Phoenix doesn't exist, sometimes Shade's a regular human, and sometimes the magic system works completely differently. This is just something I have spent a lot of time thinking about, and wanted to share!

I am aware this is probably not what you expected but like I wrote this all out and I'm not apologizing, so do with this what you will.

Mermaid lore in general:

there’s different species of mermaids and certain ones have different social norms, like sharks don’t really have families or friends usually being loners. They usually meet once a year to eat all together as a cultural event but that’s it. Mermaids have two different names, a human name which they tell humans in the case of an emergency or to trick them, and a mermaid name that they use between mermaids. These names change throughout life with how they look and what they do. Some mermaids have multiple mermaid names. For example mercy’s mermaid name is sea witch or mercy. Usually the union (basically the government) choses the names but you can choose your own but it’s frowned upon

Mako’s mermaid name is roadhog because he chose his own and he chose human things because he likes the human things. He gets made fun of for it a lot

Roadhog is a shark. he’s very curious about the human world except humans

He despises humans and thinks they’re evil but everything else about the world he wants to learn about

His childhood was kind of rough because he didn’t have a dad and his mother wasn’t really there. When he was 14 his mom died and he still loved her so visits her grave sometimes:(

He wants to hunt a mermaid and bring it back to prove it’s real which kinda includes killing one One day Jamie was hunting for mermaid and suddenly he sees one, he begins to attempt to shoot at it with his crossbow when suddenly his boat bumps a rock throwing him into the water. The mermaid he was attempting to hunt wasn’t actually a mermaid but a shark. He was about to get eaten when mako saw him and confusing him for another mermaid scared the shark away for him then helped him on the rock safely not realizing the boat near by was his. But after helping him up he realized he was a human and sorta gets scared away by that. Jamie eventually got back on his boat and returned home and told everyone he saw one but no one believed him. From then out he attempted to no longer hunt mermaids but try and find the one who saved him

So the main setting of CoM is the Circian Empire, which is powerful enough to be able to do a lot of trade with its neighbors (there’s complicated political stuff surrounding the split of the nation and what that meant for import/export but I won’t get into all that)

Most average people are either subsistence farmers or buy from their local farmers, and eat the usual crops—wheat, olives, grapes, figs. Then there are the hunters, who can get really rich by going deep in the forest and getting rare animals for people to eat, but also run the risk of the animal killing them (the more dangerous an animal is, the higher a price you get for it. So a regular pig or cow pays way less than hunting a manticore).

The emperor and other nobles have their own hunters to go find the rarest delicacies. One guy even dove into the river to kill a very angry Sesolo (creatures that live at the bottom of the water, and kill humans by making them relieve their worst memories) for an imperial feast. He was very committed to his job.

Unicorn meat is a controversial topic—nobles sometimes have a person to kill and cook unicorns for them, and take the ritual miasma onto themselves so the noble can eat it guilt free. But some people believe that the “killing a unicorn” curse extends to anyone who participates in the killing.

Now for the imports!

All the best wine comes from Vinoseta, an island close to the empire. This is also where a lot of the fancy desserts that Circians absolutely love come from

Bellamagna is more of a place where exporting happens—they’re austere and eat mostly raw vegetables, fruit, and black broth (they’re based on Sparta)

Candemero is where most of the berries and herbs come from in this world—for both medicine and culinary purposes. The Northern empire hasn’t been able to trade with them for a while; because they allied with the south

Do be warned, in my personal opinion it's no worse than anything in the series, but if you're squeamish about unsanitary things, you might want to skip a couple of paragraphs pertaining to some unsanitary textures and stimming behaviors that I marked with a ** at the beginning of each one.

what are suzuya's trigger textures

He really doesn't like rough, scratchy textures. Tall grass or institutional carpet on bare skin, bristly animals, clothing tags, scratchy fabrics from wool to lace, suits. Anyone would learn to hide their distress at the horrible feeling of a lacy dress if the alternative was Big Madam's wrath, not worth dying over even if it's a close decision, but I think I have a little to back this up when it comes to his canon rebellion against coming to work in a proper suit.

I like to think of his canon dress code violations being a little bit of “stop telling me what to do” but also a whole lot of sensory issues with the material suits tend to be made of. If he could get away with wearing his pyjamas to work every day, he would, and I feel like he would have tried at some point. Unfortunately, what he does actually wear in canon was the best he could pull off and just be lectured by Amon as opposed to more serious disciplinary action even he can't ignore. Some of how he dresses is to have some control and fun with it in a conservative office environment when it comes to how people dress, like his patterned suspenders, but the actual fit and cuts of his outfits, ie too big for him and mostly shorter than they should be, is to minimize how much of it is touching him. His undershirts we see him wear once are probably something he wears all the time and pretty soft, another way to insulate him from that suit material texture.

Also, as an animal lover, this can prove a little problematic. My first thought is of the sheer disappointment of him petting a stray dog and ending up with like, bully breed bristles or something lodged in his shirt. Or going to a petting zoo or something with the squad and he's had a wonderful time nuzzling alpacas, sheep, rabbits, ducklings, and he's too excited to even think through it before he tries to do the same with something like a potbellied pig. Sad times. Very sad times. It's not fair that some animals can look fuzzy but actually feel like a cactus. He's safest sticking with fluffy spitzy dogs and cats haha.

**Messy textures are variable. He's not your (on Tumblr, at least) stereotypical squeamish autistic. Actually, I think he's the opposite and self-soothes by squishing and smearing gross things until Shinohara finally gets him a jar of play-dough or something to stop him from playing with dead stuff he finds on the schoolyard-- maybe being given art supplies to play with instead is what got him doing other art forms as an adult. Before it was stray animal entrails and stuff he found at the Academy, it was human organs, blood, etc. and Madam probably saw it as him learning to be a good scrapper, doing things like fingerpainting with blood or squishing a handful of organs in his hands.

**That being said, as much as he likes these textures in his hands, he has learned the hard way that most of them will make him sick if he were to put them in his mouth. Someone who didn't eat a lot of innards and similar scraps of meat over the years probably wouldn't even think to be so picky, but liver, brain, stuff like that? Good! Intestines, eyeballs, parts that are more slimy and slippery in the form they'd be thrown to him in... he would sooner go hungry, even living with Madam and not being given much else to eat. He might have liked to crush bugs as a cadet, but he probably tried and learned to draw the line at eating them. In the human world, though, he might like some of those things with the sliminess deep-fried out of them, perhaps.

Speaking of, food texture is also a type of texture, and in addition to slimy and slippery, he can't do stringy, fibrous stuff in food, especially if it is both slippery and stringy like some veggies. We know he likes sweets and snack foods, and I do think those are things he truly likes, but things like sweets are also a lot safer for someone who can be hypersensitive to the point of some mouth feels making him physically sick. Some may perceive this as childish, but to him it's just survival when the wrong bite can make him feel so awful. Some foods he just can't tolerate at all, but I can see Hanbee teaching him how to prepare fruits and vegetables in ways that don't trigger his sensory issues, as he would never be able to say “do this, do that” to Suzuya but would want him to get his vitamins and minerals. I could write a whole post about the adventurous, slightly strange eater that would be unlocked once he got a good introduction to preparing food in different ways that truly change the texture of the ingredients.

Not exactly a texture but still relating to his sense of touch, he really can't do light touch, as hyposensitive as he is to pain and deep pressure. To him, light touch is much, much more noxious than pain and he can really lash out against something brushing up against him. Often he grabs or strikes an offending hand or body part to get it away before his mind can even catch up to him, not hard, but how hard he does it doesn't always matter when people around him already perceive him as violent.

and his triggers in general too

As far as his other (sensory, which I hope is what you were wanting to know) triggers and hypersensitivities, he struggles with loud noises although his threshold for them is somewhat bigger than textures-- ie he can handle weapons clashing in battle, loud music when he's out somewhere fun, stuff with an end in sight that either can or does last short enough that it won't become too much before it's over. If it lasts too long, is too loud and piercing, he's having a sensitive day, or any combination of the above, though, it can very much push him to the meltdown point. Piercing, high-frequency sounds or too many sounds going on are also hard for him and will make him clap his hands over his ears SO FAST.

Same with bright lights. There's a threshold, he can handle them to some degree especially if there's a good (to him) reason for him to, but he's still hypersensitive to them. Fluorescent lights at the field office, for example, are another thing he's willing to get on his superiors' bad side for when he doesn't have an office and will just turn off half the lights in the bullpen (I would think they have one of those?) and when people just get annoyed and turn them back on, he would learn to mess with the breakers to where it's not easily undone and looks like an electrical problem. Amon would HATE the sight of him wearing sunglasses indoors and that would make him want to utilize this coping mechanism more. When he is a senior investigator and squad leader who does get a little office of his own, it's just barely light enough for him to read and do paperwork by.

Smells, though, I actually see him being hyposensitive to for the most part. I can see him going into a candle shop, bakery, buffet, anything with lots of options displayed in an easily accessible way and just wanting to pick up everything to sniff it, though he can't always do that because with food that is unsanitary and will get him kicked out. He also has a high tolerance that he hasn't actually found the limit to thus far for filthy crime scenes and rotting gore that even seasoned investigators have to go and vomit at the stench of.

As far as taste, though mouth feel is a different story, I see it also being a more hyposensitive sense for him. He loves to experiment with different flavors of things and is that person who seeks out foods that are really sour, really spicy, really minty, stuff like that that makes his whole face feel the taste of it. Again, would just pick things up and sample them as a stim if it wouldn't get him banned from places with delicious food, and I see him as one of those autistics to whom eating food is a stim. I can also see him liking the taste of alcoholic things for this reason, although on an unrelated note I don't see him as a drinker because he is an angry not-fun-to-be-around drunk; booze is best left as something to soak confections in or savor one single serving of, but he does like the burn.

As mentioned, he is a mixed bag of hyper and hyposensitivies, and deep pressure is something he seeks out just as hard has he avoids light touch. We see him do a lot of the classic signs of this kind of sensory seeking in canon, such as physically risky behaviors, indifference to pain, and constant movement. As far as sharing physical touch with another person, though, which he don't really see in canon, he has a need to be squeezed.

Starting with stuff that can be read as conventionally casual and platonic, I have mentioned he likes Akira and only Akira messing with his hair. That's for the same reason anyone else would run away screaming from having their hair done by her: the result might look amazing, unlike Touka's home hair attempts, but we know she's not the warmest character and can be just as insensitive as Suzuya in her own way as a person. As a hairstylist she really gets in there with combs and brushes and will pull to get a lock perfectly detangled or a braid tight enough to stay intact even while fighting for life and limb against an SS-rank ghoul, all while too absorbed in the task at hand to notice her victim is crying. Honestly, someone might see her updos around the office and convince themselves they can sit through it, but it's too much suffering, even for the most beautiful hair of their lives. For him, though, it's akin to a nice spa day, pleasant and relaxing. Horseplay and sparring also count as touch to him, and are pretty hard to go wrong with since that is always going to be heavy, hard bodily contact. Same with those hearty, macho claps on the shoulder I've mentioned before.

Going a little ways up the conventional ladder of intimacy, giving his hands or his shoulder a squeeze is nice and always advisable, especially when he's fidgety and stressed. Giving him a tight bear hug is the nicest, but you can't be scared to break him, or chances are you're not going to hug hard enough. He also loves to cuddle, but someone has to be laying a lot of body weight on the other. Once that is happening, though, it's even better than a weighted blanket or throwing someone to a mat. He could have a rib broken and still just be disappointed that it means he can't be physically crushed that hard again. Just like he relishes one of his cats or a stray animal laying in his lap, he likes to lean against people he knows won't shoo him away, and would also enjoy having his partner fall asleep against his shoulder or in his lap. Kisses are also fun and exciting for him, but he can't do the light pecks on the cheek and brushes of lips; gotta put some pressure and confidence into it, even if it doesn't get deeper in any other way.

Touching the rest of his body is where I see things getting emotionally fraught for him in addition to having the potential to be real overstimulating real fast. These are the areas of his body that are easily hidden by a nightshirt, a scrapper's costume, or a pretty dress without marring the beautiful doll he was supposed to be, so that's where only Madam ever touched him, and all she gave him were scars. This is where his control over the situation is just as important to him as the physical sensation being pleasant. I know my word choices sound sexual, but this doesn't even mean sex.

We know he is into underground body modification for example, but I see him being strictly DIY if he wants to feel the sensation of needles through his skin, which is the real reason he has his own stitches while not having any conventional piercings or tattoos; office rules wouldn't stop him lmao, he just can't do those himself with as much room for error. Sharing a shower or bath would be all fun and games, and he would like to wash someone's hair and body as a gesture of affection, and the hot water would be nice for him, but don't try to return the favor after he's had his fun. He would enjoy kissing someone all over in a merciless flurry, but honestly, the best way to approach something like that is to let him take what he wants and leave what he doesn't. He's direct enough that if he does want something different, he will get it. This is another small reason I think he pairs well with someone as shy to even try returning the favor as Mutsuki tbh

Hopefully it's not information you were hoping for, because I'm going to stop there as far as stages of intimacy that I googled for the purpose of this ask go. I have headcanons and things to say and would be totally cool answering more r-rated and up questions if one were to ask them directly. Emil Müller and Cannibalism

I've been thinking a lot about Emil and I wanted to share with you a lil peak inside his mind when it comes to the cannibal side of things! I hope y'all enjoy my word vomit <3 general murder stuff might be next, but that'd be a much shorter post.

Who are his victims?

Not every hit he does immediately gets butchered, he has a type of person he goes towards: those in power that refuse to give back to those who helped build their status, those who use that status to screw over entire communities.

Why does he do it?

Emil feels the need to find a way to make something good out of a truly terrible person. He finds it fitting for their bodies to never rest easy. There's an enjoyment he gets out of seeing the media and others in disarray over their disappearance. It brings a smile to his face knowing that their bones are rotting with all the other slaughtered pigs behind a meat shop. He enjoys what he does because it gives him the best of both worlds: he can give back to both his community and family, he can do what his victims couldn't. While he also rids the city of people who needed to be gone. There's a reason why someone sent a hit out on them in the first place.

What does it mean if he feeds you human flesh?

His victims are like any other piece of meat to him, it's like nothing and everything to him. While it has its meaning, he's nonchalant about feeding others it. He prepares meals and gives them out to those who need or just because he was feeling extra kind that day. It just means he likes and respects you, take it as a compliment.

It's also important to note that he doesn't force anyone to eat it. If you have dietary or religious reasons to not eat anything pork or veal adjacent, he respects it. His service isn't out of the shock value of eating human meat, he does it to genuinely provide.

What is his diet like?

As expected, he also feeds off of his victims too, but he likes variety. He keeps his snacks on him, he has his own book full of recipes, but it's just like everyone else. No one just eats the same type of meat everyday, there's even days where he'll gladly eat vegetarian.

How did he start eating meat?

It was just morbid curiosity that brought him there. At 17, he killed a man that plunged his parents into debt and ran with the opportunity given to him. He already had a love of cooking and finding the taste of blood enjoyable sparked cravings that most couldn't stomach.

hildegard. more logical in a way people find maybe a little cold or uncomfortably clinical. tony. ohhh he is so emotional honestly he needs to chillax.

hildegard. tragically their weird and off-putting swag is too much for most, and they tend to be left alone. creatures don't mind, though. monsters don't mind. tony. everyone either wants to climb him like a tree or is immediately intimidated by him. so like jury's out. until the time of the campaign he's been very reluctant to make any sort of deeper connections with people. because of the curse.

🍛 CURRY AND RICE — what does your oc's typical dinner look like? do they usually eat dinner

hildegard. since he travels around a lot, he tends to eat stuff that can last longer and that's easy to have on the road. bread, cheeses, dried meats and fruits. tony. well. he has a notable and unfortunate dietary requirement, so generally speaking he just kind of does a Snake Meal of human flesh and whatever he has on hand, either leftovers or takeout or something he makes himself, and that keeps him going for about a week. girl dinner.

hildegard. god what music do they have in dnd. spooky music from the sims 4. i think they'd like stuff that's pretty upbeat and intense, and songs that have a story. tony. dad rock and jazz. perhaps he peeps some more musical theatre bc of zivah. he likes to have something on in the background pretty often.

So basically I found out I assign animal qualities to Everhood characters a lot

Gonna make a list of the characters and what animals they are in my headcanons; as in literally or traits they have based off said species

Pink: wolf. Wolf Pink is a wolf to me it even works thematically like. Chasing a rabbit. The misunderstood “big bad wolf,” something demonized by everyone yet is actually not in the wrong. Yeah. I need to draw them with pointed ears and a tail more but they have fangs even so. But! They also can purr! And yip like a fox when excited or wanting to call Rasta from far away!

Rasta Beast: It’s just canon they’re a unicorn but I also love to think they make chuffs and roars like a tiger <3 they also give off a lot of large dog energy, hell, Rottweilers were and still are the inspiration for how I draw them! Also such malamute energy in their design as well

Brown Mage: bear bear BEAR. BEAR IN THE GAY SENSE AND ANIMAL SENSE. Big fat hairy guy!!!!! Also sits in their cave alone eating and eating, like a bear (the animal)… I also draw them with some badger like qualities as well, but nothing aside from being human originally explains their long, luscious, wavy hair that probably has mats and knots and hasn’t been washed or brushed in eons

Shopkeeper: a snake! Specifically a hognose snake! Mainly because of the head shape, but also because it sorta fits with their profession as a florist/gardener as hognose snakes are known to burrow!! I can imagine them digging a hole to plant some flowers by using their snout, hehe..

Blue Thief: oh man. This little guy is purse dog coded. But getting into specifics, Blue was probably once an actual gnome! How they ended up the way they are now is… gruesome, though. They defected from their mage status by ripping their gem out. Of their forehead. Kickstarting the memory issues. Then a ton of surgeries trying to fix them that ended up botched, getting worse and worse until nearly nothing inside could be salvaged, leading to their body being scooped out and stuffed. Blue is just a living plush/taxidermy, their limbs lock back in place via their bones, but their skin still has to be sewn together again. I got off topic though, animal traits I think they have is a whole hodgepodge of stuff. They purr and make biscuits like a cat and have the same climbing ability, they have cheek pouches like a hamster, paw pads for general stealth, and fangs like a cat or dog. I love my little dog-cat-hamster-raccoon-hedgehog thing that is Blue <3

Green: if you’ve seen my art you know I see Green as a bird. Green just has that messed up bird energy + they have the claws. I feel like they were once human, but then began to transform into a bird-like monster via the gem’s influence. In the end though, they now look the way they do thanks to tearing their original body to shreds… Poor Green will make nests out of three race cars and some dice, like a pigeon. Will also purr and coo like a chicken (and also do warning/threat squawks like one too)

Purple: unlike Brown and Green, they started as a furry, a goat to be specific! Purple was a goat person about to be sacrificed, until they found Everhood, and unfortunately taken in by Gold Pig with the promise of power and shelter. Over time, they have transformed due to the influence of the gem and the magic they performed. Now, they are some sort of void-like creature with only tentacles that serve as a body and limbs, mostly comparable to a jellyfish.

Zigg: hairless cat <3

Muck and Flan: these guys have such salamander energy tbh. Feed them worms. I love drawing them as big goo dragons like Goodra which is one of my top 3 favorite Pokémon <3

Reese: I don’t headcanon them as having any animal traits, but I do think if they were an animal they would be a horse.

Noseferatchu: classic vampire, but because of a lot of general vampire headcanons I have, Nose is a big leech guy pretty much! Bring back leech vampires leeches are so cool and one of my fave animals </3

Vampire Kid: still a leech but has some bat traits as well!! Used to rock themselves to sleep as a baby hanging upside down like baby bats do…
