Showing Love with Pig Vigils - Eder Lopez (vegan) and the Animal Alliance Network

October 2nd of every year has been designated “World Farm Animals Day” or “World Day for Farmed Animals.” It is not a day to commemorate the happy life of animals on farms, but to call for their rescue as animals there are severely exploited for various purposes. In today’s program, it is our privilege to interview a compassionate American vegan animal rights activist who exemplifies the spirit of the day, Mr. Eder Lopez. Eder is the vice president of the non-profit @animalalliancenetwork , one of the 700 chapters of a global organization called the Animal Save Movement that conducts vigils outside of slaughterhouses. Animal Alliance Network’s mission is to “educate, take action, do outreach, and spread awareness of the daily atrocities animals endure due to human practices.” Eder organizes pig vigils every Wednesday night that stop trucks full of baby pigs to give water and show love to them before they head to slaughter...

If you ever feel like you’re just one person trying to change something, I promise there are hundreds, thousands, if not millions of people out there who feel the same way as you, who want to make a difference. That is a quote by Saira O’Mallie and it is one that each person who is actively working for positive change should read often. Things are changing but it is like watching a child grow. If you see them every day, you don’t notice the change as much though change IS happening. Here is a perfect example of a family dedicated to change. Last night, @joaquinphoenixvx_ and his family attended the pig vigil DTLA outside of Farmer John, the largest pig slaughterhouse west of the Mississippi. Each night, roughly 10,000 pigs aged between 3 and 6 months young (think of human babies at 3 to 6 months young) are trucked in some cases for 24 hours without any food or water, to this cold place in Vernon just south of DTLA, to be killed for bacon, ham, ribs, and pet food. I’ve seen their ears sold as dog chews. What happens here is one of the worst things humanity has come up with to do to animals. At the same time, the kind souls that come to this place on summer days when the heat is overbearing and days in winter when it is near freezing, offer kindness, compassion, and water to the innocent beings whose only crime is to be born in a body that humans own & can legally kill in a society that protects & financially rewards the oppressor. But yet hundreds attend these peaceful vigils twice a week and have done so for over three years now. And because of the press and social media spotlight on what happens here, over 500 Save Movements have popped up all around the world including one at a slaughterhouse in Pakistan.
