HOTEL DU GLOBE Revisits Their Post-punk Roots with new single ‘Back to the Past’

We originally wrote this song in 1987. At that time we were inspired by "Severina" by The Mission. In 2021, the song resurfaced at a party with friends. Our new guitarist, Jo, noticed and liked it. Flattered, we decided to record it with Louise's smooth voice on vocals.

Hotel du Globe is a Belgian rock band, formed in the early 80s by singer Pierre Melchior and bassist Frédéric Floss. The third member was Dimitri Koutcheriw on drums and keyboards. Later, guitarist Philippe Verstraeten and drummer Eric Bayens were recruited.

"We were largely influenced by the bands that emerged after the punk movement. Among others Joy Divison, Human League, The Cure, B-Movie, Simple Minds, etc... "

We composed several "New Wave" songs with metaphysical lyrics, corresponding to our "No Future" generation.

Due to a lack of artistic perspective and despite good feedback on the music and the concerts, the band decided to take a break after their last concert in 1987. This should have been the end ...

The covid-19 pandemic led us to an existential impasse but we were able to exploit the confinement. Our ideas and thoughts were able to escape from this virtual prison... "We caught a window to the sky"... Watching new TV series with 80's music in the background was a trigger!

More than three decades later, the idea of relaunching the band was born in our minds. We decided to record and revisit our most popular song, called "Eyes of the shadow", an energetic and melodic post-punk rock song.

This song has already caught the attention of the Bath-based British label Glasstone Records. They signed us for the distribution and mastering of this track which officially became our first single.

In the meantime, we also recorded "Posthumous Decoration". Both of these songs were written in 1981.

For these recording sessions, we were pleased to welcome the talented musician Geoffrey Lesire who added guitars and backing vocals. Marc De Meersman - who has been with the band since 1985 - on drums. He has played with several bands such as "Vaya Con Dios", Isabelle Antena, The Domino's.

And on top of it all, the young and charismatic Louise joined us and put her sweet and warm voice on our second single "Back to the Past". A melancholic ballad written in 1987.

To complete the project Didier, a close friend, and also a talented and creative keyboard player joined us as well.

We are currently finishing the recording of our first 5 songs EP "INTROSPECTION". The common thread is melancholy. It will be available in spring 2023 and will be mastered by Greg Brookers Glasstone Records. And finally ... We are working on new material. We look forward to share them with you.

EK Sen: het grote ongelijk van Koen Sleeckx, technisch directeur topsport !

Het zal allicht wel weer aan mijn eigen onbekwaamheid liggen, maar ik snap het niet ! Ik alludeerde er al op naar aanleiding van de GSL in Antalya, maar de goed-nieuws show van de VJF tijdens persmomenten naar aanleiding van EK- & WK-'s, doet telkens weer mijn maag keren. Nochtans, een goedbetaalde directeur topsport, zou écht wel mogen weten dat een EK één van de sterkste tornooien ter wereld is, zéker op een moment dat er voor Olympische kwalificatie-punten wordt gestreden ! En om héél voor de hand liggende redenen nochtans: Europa is nu eenmaal het meest judo-competitieve continent; ondanks Brasil, ligt het niveau in de Americas een stuk lager; en hetzelfde geldt uiteraard, en nog sterker, voor Afrika. Dus alleen al die feiten maken dat de kans op een makkelijker loting tijdens een WK écht wel reëel is, daar waar je in Europe, in een zo cruciale fase, zelden een 'opwarmer' tegen komt, toch ? Dus, met dat indachtig, zou een down to earth visie echt niet misstaan voor een technisch directeur topsport ! Maar, naar jaarlijkse gewoonte dus: "vol vertrouwen over de kansen van de Belgische judoka’s" & "we hebben een sterke ploeg met veel potentieel. We gaan voor medailles, en ik ben ervan overtuigd dat onze judoka’s klaar zijn om er een mooi EK van te maken". (-> link) Is het Koen Sleeckx dan ontgaan wat de WTour-resultaten van een Ellen Salens, Amber Ryheul, Vicky Verschaere, en Jarne Duyck inhouden ??? En dat zijn er dus al 4 van de 6 ! Blijven over: Mina Libeer en Toma Nikiforov: die hebben inderdaad een écht top-8 potentieel, ALS hun loting niet tégen zit ! Wat dus op een EK - nogmaals - dik kan tegenslaan.... En dan heb ik het helemaal nog niet over mogelijke medaille-kansen.

En dus mocht Koen Sleeckx - ná het EK - zijn groot ongelijk nog maar eens gaan uitleggen. Hoe dom kan je zijn, denk ik dan als naïeve judo-supporter. En jawel, Christian Pierre (VJF media & communicatie), die moet inderdaad nóg altijd zijn eerste kritische vraag stellen aan de federatie...

Meer, van zodra ik er tijd voor heb.

DE OLYMPISCHE KWALIFICATIE: Matthias Casse /-81kg en Jorre Verstraeten /-60kg zijn zeker van hun Olympisch ticket. Voor de militair met Bulgaarse roots, Toma Nikiforov /-100kg moet er al een drama gebeuren om zich niet te plaatsen. Mina Libeer /-57kg valt momenteel uit de top-17 van rechtstreeks geplaatsten, met een achterstand van 200p; bovendien staat ook Telma Monteiro nog vóór haar in de Europese 'continental quota', en kan die dus mogelijks als eerste nog die top-17 binnen duiken. Mina's situatie is slecht nieuws voor Amber Ryheul, die nu haar Olympisch ticket kwijt is, en moet hopen dat Mina alsnog de top-17 haalt in de /-57kg.

In Wallonië verkwanselde Malik Umayev /-73kg domweg zijn reële kansen (-> link), en heeft Sami Chouchi nog een sportief mirakel nodig om zich alsnog te plaatsen na zijn overstap naar de /-90kg. De lang, en zwaar gekwetste Gaby Willems /-70kg, die reeds haar Olympische Spelen in Tokyo mistte door een blessure, zou ik het zo graag gunnen: niet onmogelijk, maar het wordt moeilijk, niet op zijn minst ook mentaal... Momenteel staat ze in haar gewichtsklasse 513p achter op de Hongaarse Szabina Gercsák, en qua 'continentale quota' 381p achter op Mina... Gaby's voordeel is wel dat ze een blanco scoreblad heeft voor de laatste 12 maanden, en dus iedere kamp die ze wint, is zuivere winst:

Samengevat: België gaat dus met maximum 5, maar misschien slechts met 4 judoka's richting Paris (in Tokyo waren we eveneens met 4). Voor Mina, Amber, Gaby en Sami worden de GSL van Tajikistan (03/05-May), de GSL Kazakhstan (10/12-May) en het WK in Abu Dhabi (19/23-May) cruciaal. En wat specifiek Gaby betreft: WK én de WCup Guayaquil (Ecu) zijn helaas niet te combineren.

During a student hazing, these men unintentionally killed a fellow student through a prolonged overly harsh hazing. They are all members of the sorority "reuzegom" and all of them are rich, influential boys who have barely received any punishment for their actions. The punishment was: a fine of 400 euros for each person and community service of approximately 350 hours for each person, and none of the perpetrators will have a criminal record. These low sentences are (partly) due to social inequality which ensures that there is no justice for the victim, and why a lot of people in Belgium are angry about this verdict, including me.

What is the future for the ruins of houses after the floods?

Moving a neighbourhood, building pile dwellings or constructing dams? The flooding of the South-Belgian municipality of Pepinster in the Liège province and the surrounding area raises the question of how to proceed there. Calamities that happened abroad offer inspiration.

The water was more than a floor high. Debris floated around, cars were folded around each other and furniture reduced to waste. On August 26, 1983, the Nervión overflowed its banks and turned the Spanish city of Bilbao into a disaster area. There were deaths. The photos and footage are reminiscent of the situation in Pepinster and the surrounding area in recent days, including the distribution of potable water and cleaning up.

Today, in urban planning classes, Bilbao is an example of how a city can reinvent itself: from an industrially backward area to a popular destination for city trips. The deadly flood has been a new start, leading, among other things, to the redevelopment of the area at the borders of the Nervión. The famous Guggenheim Museum is now located there.

Urban design professor Jacques Teller of the University of Liège likes to quote the example of Bilbao these days in discussions about how to proceed with Pepinster and the other villages that have been badly affected by the flooding. A new Guggenheim location is not yet planned, but the professor believes this is an opportunity to make better use of the available space. 'Instead of rebuilding the area, we should give space to the water', is his conviction.

Humility is recommended

On the map of Pepinster, it is striking how village life unfolds around the banks of Vesder, one of the rivers that have overflowed their banks. Schools and supermarkets are concentrated around the water, the main road N61 runs parallel to it and brick houses overlook it.

Teller: “The emerging industry in the second half of the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century required the direct presence of water. It makes sense that everyone started living around there too.”

Until today, the valley around the Vesder remains an attractive place to live. “I will stay,” told for example, 69-year-old Christiane Mathonet to this newspaper, standing in the rubble of what was once her home. Professor Pierre Ozer, who is a geographer at the University of Liège, would rather not see that happen. “What has been destroyed must not be rebuilt,” he says. “We have to be humble, accept that nature is stronger than us and that we have moved too close to the river. We must withdraw.”

In the space that is freed up, Ozer proposes to create parks and public spaces. Certainly not places with many buildings, with a great risk of damage. "It's not so bad if, for example, a football field would be flooded."

Houses become parks

That is not an easy message. In Ozer's view, some of the Vesder's neighbours will have to leave their homes — and their lives — behind. In Pepinster's case, living near the river also means living in the centre of the village: close to schools, with public transport within walking distance and always neighbours to chat with.

But, he believes, local authorities need to find other places to accommodate those affected, places that are more resilient to future risks. “There are no sustainable alternatives. Always building higher dikes – protecting, protecting, protecting – makes no sense. That will cost a lot of money and ultimately cannot prevent catastrophes once every twenty or thirty years.”

His vision as an academic is inspired by years of research, but also by examples from abroad. In the United States, for example, the Federal Agency for Disaster Relief (Fema)[1] supports local governments seeking to buy up flooded homes in strategic locations. The owners can agree to this and receive a market price. Parks or nature reserves will then be created in that location, but it may never be built on again.

Closer to home, in France, there have also been projects to relocate residents to higher ground after flooding. Hydrologist Emma Haziza is familiar with this. She is the founder of Mayane[2], an agency that seeks solutions for global warming.

“In Nîmes, where there was a major flood in 1988, and in Aramon, where a flood caused havoc in 2002, entire neighbourhoods have been demolished. That was necessary, but it requires enormous psychological and financial support to the families involved," says Haziza.

She realizes that relocation operations are not always and everywhere possible. “And then the main focus remains on managing the risks of the water as well as possible.”

Pile dwellings

If you wander through Cologne, Bonn and Koblenz, you may see the marker stones that indicate where the water has come in the past. These three German cities are located on the Rhine and have experience with flooding. But they don't give way to the water.

This is observed by geographer Gert Verstraeten, affiliated with KU Leuven. “It is difficult for a while, but afterwards a reconstruction follows. Living alongside the waterways has always had a long-term benefit, so people kept returning," he emails.

It is his personal belief that the villages that were flooded last week can be rebuilt on the flat valley bottoms around Vesder – all the more so as there is little room to do so elsewhere. ‘Of course you can examine whether the houses can be made more flood-resistant – since during this catastrophe mainly houses that may have had very weak walls have been washed away.'

The latter is right up the alley of the Netwerk Architecten Vlaanderen (NAV)[3], which has built up expertise in so-called water-robust construction. Architect Silvia De Nolf shows photos of two housing types that for the time being look exotic, but may be seen more and more in these regions in the future: mound houses and pile dwellings.

A mound house stands on an elevation in the landscape, a mound, while a pile dwellings – the word says it all here too – stands on piles. “In the United States, they are much further along in this regard,” says De Nolf. “Traditionally, we are reluctant to build in flood-prone areas, but there are designs that that are resilient to this. It can be a way to build on well-situated areas after all, for example close to a village centre.”

Even in exceptional cases, buildings should not collapse, emphasizes De Nolf, citing the example of Pepinster. Strong building is essential. “And interventions are also possible for existing homes, such as, for example, watertight bulkheads for doors and windows, a non-return valve for the connection to the sewerage system and sealing openings in the facade.”

Vegetation, verges, dams

Dams have been built in Nîmes to keep the water under control. In Bilbao they have reconstructed the banks and recently carried out infrastructure works with, for example, storm walls to prevent worse.

According to Verstraeten, there are various options for taming the rising water at a local level, for example by increasing the capacity of a river. This can be done by deepening it, by making it wider or by placing higher walls around it. “If you can also store more water in the valley up and down, the residential centres may be better protected. But that also means that you have to concentrate buildings and not spread them all along the valley.”

But the options in the case of the Vesder are limited, indicates hydrology professor Patrick Willems (KU Leuven). For example, in the Hautes Fagnes (High Fens)[4] - where the water in the Vesder originates from – “there is not much else to do”. “On some slopes you can try to stop part of the runoff with vegetation, local berms and dams. But the impact of that will be limited.”

In that case, more can be done with smarter management of reservoirs and dams, he says: “By learning to better anticipate heavy rainfall and allow the reservoirs to drain in good time, so that they can collect that water”. But that turns out to be easier said than done – they have already experienced that in that region.

Belgium: 'Intellectual elites' pen an anti-Israel petition (yet again)

Yet again, Belgians are busy defaming Israel, rather than dealing with the problems besetting their own country.  RTBF, the Belgian francophone public broadcaster posted a petition signed by 100  individuals titled: "Palestine, 50 years under occupation: in Belgium and in Europe, we have the means to act!". No such petitions are initiated by these citizens "committed to the values ​​of justice, peace and equality" against human rights abuses in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Qatar etc. Only Israel. Obviously they dont care about the occupation of Cyprus by Turkey, the Western Sahara by Morocco, the Crimea by Russia and so on and so on. Israel is accused of carrying out ethnic cleansing, of treating Israeli Arabs as second class citizens, o being guilty of war crimes, etc. The signatories could use the term "implantations" for settlements, but prefer to use"colonies" and conclude: "Concretely, we call on the Belgian, federal, community and regional governments, and in particular on Didier Reynders, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and on Kris Peeters, Minister of the Economy, to take action and sever all economic, political and scientific relations that Belgium maintains with the Israeli colonization. DM ZAPT. In uw gat.

Een stukje voor DM Zapt, de dagelijkse tv-rubriek van De Morgen.

Er kan nooit genoeg voortreffelijk gebrachte onnozelheid zijn. Daarom maakt mijn hart telkens een sprongetje tijdens de eerste dertig seconden van Winteruur: de dertig seconden waarin Wim Helsen de cabaretier in zichzelf nog even voorrang geeft op de interviewer.

"U ziet mij zitten en u waant zich onbespied", sprak Helsen de kijker onlangs toe. "Maar misschien zie ík u óók zitten. Misschien ga ik - als u straks uw tv uitzet en naar boven gaat - wel mee naar boven. En als u gaat slapen en u kruipt in uw bed, kruip ik misschien wel méé in bed. En vlak voor u in slaap valt, doe ik misschien wel zó (toont rechterwijsvinger) en steek ik mijn vinger misschien wel ... in uw gat."

Misschien heb ik na deze intro gehinnikt van het lachen. Misschien heb ik - terwijl ik mezelf uit mijn dubbelgeplooide toestand probeerde te bevrijden - gedacht aan de inleidingen van Regine Clauwaert in het vroegere miniprogramma Kunstzaken. En misschien ben ik nadien nog harder beginnen lachen, omdat ik mij om onverklaarbare redenen de intro 'In de reeks Europalia-tentoonstellingen neemt Geschenken Aan Het Keizerlijk Hof van Oostenrijk een aparte plaats in' herinnerde.

"Er zijn eigenlijk maar twee soorten mensen", zei Wim Helsen in het begin van zijn Winteruur-onderonsje met Clara Cleymans. "Zij die naar dit programma kijken en zij die niet naar dit programma kijken. Recent onderzoek van de universiteit van Gent heeft uitgewezen dat ú tot de eerste groep behoort. Welkom." Hij had ook kunnen zeggen: "Welkom bij Winteruur, vandaag met Clara Cleymans", maar dan had hij niet Wim Helsen, maar Lieven Verstraeten geheten.

Wat een gouden zet was het van Tom Lenaerts om dit programma niet te laten presenteren door een journalist, maar door een cabaretier. Journalisten zouden hun gasten vroeg of laat vragen of ze vertrouwd zijn met de literatuursociologische theorieën van Pierre Bourdieu. Wim Helsen schuwt de ernst evenmin, maar hij wil van zijn gesprekspartners tenminste ook weten of ze graag naar dieren kijken en zo ja: hoelang?

"Komt zwaarte niet beter tot zijn recht als er ook humor rond zweeft?', vroeg Helsen een paar weken geleden op retorische wijze aan Herman Brusselmans. "Ja", zei de schrijver. "Daarom wordt er ook zo vaak gelachen op begrafenissen." Waarop zich een prachtig zinnetje van Jean Cocteau in mijn hoofd aanbood: 'Humor is de beleefdheid van de wanhoop'.

Je verwelkomen met een plaisanterietje en je tien minuten later naar bed sturen in het gezelschap van een fraai geformuleerd inzicht: Wim Helsen kan dat.

WCup Sofia: Karel Foubert 2° /-90kg & Loïs Petit 3° /-48kg.

Liefst 10 Belgen kwamen op de mat van deze WCup in Bulgarije, en de resultaten werden weer broeder-/zuster-lijk verdeeld tussen Vlaanderen en Wallonië. Karel Foubert vocht de finale /-90kg en Loïs pakte het brons /-48kg.

Niemand uit de top-20 en 16 judoka’s overall uit de top-40 van de WRL; bij Loïs (64° WRL; 3rd seeded) waren ze slechts met 4 uit de top-100, bij Karel toch met zijn tienen, en met als hoogst gerankten Alex Cret (°02; Rou; 38°WRL; 2°EK’20 & 3°WK’22 u21/-90kg) en Roland Goz (°99; Hun; 50°WRL;  2°EK’19 & 2°WK’19 u21/-90kg) als enigen uit de top-50..   Ik denk een juiste weerspiegeling van een typisch WCup-niveau.  

  Loïs Petit (°99; /-48kg; 64° WRL; Top Niveau Tournai): 3° (3 own)   -- 1/8-fin: ippon uit het boekje na 20″sec tegen Teodora Dimeska (°??; Mkd; no WRL); -- 1/4-fin: Anais Perrot (°01; Fra; 168°WRL) moest na Sarajevo’21, Warsaw’22 en Madrid’22 op haar 4de WCup wachten om een eerste top-8 te behalen, en het werd meteen zilver. Loïs werd één van de slachtoffers in 1/4-fin: na 9′45″min (!) in Golden Score zagen de scheidsrechters enkel nog de gemakkelijkheids-oplossing: een 3de shido (00s2/00s3)... wanneer gaan die met hunne cravate eens ballen aan hun lijf krijgen en gewoon laten doorvechten ??!!   -- repechage: Loïs in een regionaal duel tegen Jente Verstraeten (°01; IGW; 120°WRL): een vroege uchi-mata (w-a) die Jente niet meer kan ophalen. -- bronze: ippon winst net voor halfweg tegen Nevena Milic (°01; Srb; no WRL): huidig Servisch kampioene met 2 senior ECup resultaten in 2022: 5° Dubrovnik & 2° Sarajevo; mooie osoto-gari, maar toch moeilijker dan het laat uitschijnen. Vorig jaar 2x goud op een senior ECup, nu Loïs’ 2de WCup medaille in 6 top-8 plaatsen sinds 2020.

  Karel Foubert (°99; /-90kg; 91° WRL): 2° (4 own)   laten Udo & Koen (beiden coachten Foubert) maar bescheiden blijven zeker ? En na jaren wacht ik nog altijd op het eerste écht objectieve verslag van Christian Pierre; belachelijk gewoon !  >> VJF-verslag. -- 1/16-fin: winst (10s1/01s2) tegen de 18-jarige Mamedaly Achyldyyev (°??; Tkm; no WRL); het is de Turkmeen zijn 1ste kamp /-90kg; geen idee wat hun criteria daar zijn, maar hij won nog geen énkele officiële WTour/WCup kamp, ook niet als /-81kg, in de inmiddels 8 tornooien waaraan hij deel nam (4 Grand Slams !, 1 Grand Prix en dit is zijn 3de WCup... ;-). Het scheelde niet veel of Karel (als 8th seeded) was out na 50″sec ! -- 1/8-fin: winst (ippon na 1′07″min) tegen Max Laborde (°99; Fra; no WRL; 3°NK’22; 3°Visé’23; dit is zijn 2de WCup): o-soto-maki-komi, een typische beweging van Karel. -- 1/4-fin: winst tegen Nika Sidamonidze (°98; Geo; no WRL); iemand met een gat van 6 jaar in internationale competities.. Na 1′35″min wordt Karel zuiver gevloerd: ippon voor de hoofdscheidsrechter; ippon voor Udo, maar na minuten beraad wordt “diving” voor de zoveelste maal - wat mij betreft - het truus-excuus om een wedstrijd te vervalsen... enfin: “reglement is reglement” niet waar ;-) hansoku-make en Karel geplaatst voor de 1/2-finale.  -- 1/2-fin: winst met waza-ari na 4′min tegen Ali Hazem (°94; Egt; 56°WRL):9 AfK medailles, maar daarbuiten nog geen enkele top-8,hooguit af en toe eens een overwinning...  -- final: Karel met “de verdienste” dat hij de 4′min volmaakt, full stop. Hij ontsnapt aan een 3de shido want ik zag geen énkele halve aanval ! Roland Goz (°99; Hun; 50°WRL) tenslotte scoort een waza-ari 1″sec voor tijd. Nu goed, de 70 WRL-punten zijn de Vlaming gegund, voor de volharding dan maar. 

  De overige Belgen: 5 Vlamingen winnen ieder 1 wedstrijd en zien géén herkansing; 3 Walen samen dan weer winnen amper 1 wedstrijd, maar behalen daarmee paradoxaal wél 2x een top-8...

-- Jente Verstraeten (°01; /-48kg; IGW; 120°WRL): 7° (1 own) wint haar 1ste kamp (1/8-fin) 30″sec voor tijd tegen thuis-judoka en uittredend Bulgaars kampioene Sen & u23 Aleksa Georgieva (°02; Bul; 167°WRL) met 10s1/01s0 (dank zij haar niet-onbekend sterk, storend ashi-waza); ze verliest vervolgens wel tegen de 19-jarige en 2nd seeded huidige Italiaanse kampioene Asia Avanzato (°03; Ita; 62°WRL; hier 5°; 10x ECup medaille bij de jeugd); die huidige ranking dankt ze aan haar WK’s u21/-48kg: 3°WK’21 & 7°WK’22). In haar herkansing verliest Jente dus van ploeggenote en bronzen medaille Loïs Petit : uchi-mata (waza-ari) na 45″sec.  

-- Eveline Delbaen (°97; /-57kg; JS Reet; 210° WRL): out (1 own) wint met shido (00s1/00s3) in 1/16-fin van Anastasiia Chyzhevska (°02; Ukr; 138°WRL; 3°EK’22 u23/-57kg) en verliest dan logischerwijze haar 2de kamp (1/8-fin) tegen finaliste (2°) Flaka Loxha (°99; Kos; 41°WRL; 3°EK’19 u21/-57kg & 3°EK’21 u23/-57kg).    

-- Robbe Demets (°02; /-66kg; Moorsele; 172°WRL): out (1 own) wint moeizaam (00s0/01s2 na 5′44″min) zijn 1ste ronde (1/32-fin) tegen Bence Mathe (°01; Hun; 264°WRL), maar verliest dan tegen Nurzat Salimbayev (°00; Kaz; no WRL; in 2017 wel ooit vice-wereldkampioen u18/-60kg); Nurzat wordt vervolgens zelf uitgeschakeld; 

-- Zelemkhan Batchaev (°02; /-73kg; JT Alen; 377°WRL): out (1 own)  wint zijn 1ste kamp (1/32-fin) tegen thuis-judoka Valentin Bonev (°02; Bul; no WRL): heuworp & maki-komi, maar wordt dan logischerwijze vóór halfweg uitgeschakeld (met o-soto & juji) door Antoine Bouchard (°94; Can; 48°WRL), hoewel de Canadees er daarna verrassend zelf uitvliegt.      

-- Muslim Adashev (°02; /-73kg; Hamme; no WRL): out (1 own) wint in 1/32-fin in GS met shido (00s1/00s3) tegen Sayat Seitkaliyev (°98; Kaz; no WRL), maar wordt dan uitgeschakeld door de 19-jarige Yevhen Honcharko (°03; Ukr; no WRL; als /-66kg: 3°EK’21 & 3°WK’21 u21 en 3°GSL Baku’21): 2x tomoe-nage (00s0/02s1). Muslim, ooit bij United beloftevol Belgisch kampioen u15/-60kg, maar daarna op een ander, nooit nog die Belgische titel behaald of dat podium op een ECup bij de jeugd, en vooralsnog ook niet bij de seniors. Wat hij wel overhoudt aan deze WCup: een eerste world ranking: 347°.       

-- Jarne Duyck (°02; /-81kg; Ingelmunster; 234° WRL): out (1 own)  in 1/16-fin wint hij met waza-ari+wurging van thuis-judoka Alexandr Jelev (°98; Bul; 290°WRL), maar in 1/8-fin wordt hij met waza-ari uitgeschakeld door Ruslan Mussayev (°97; Kaz; 128°WRL; 5°GSL Paris’19; hier 3° en diens 2de senior (WCup) medaille).   

-- Jitse Van den Herrewegen (°01; /-90kg; IGW; 205° WRL): out (0 own)  brute loting-pech, Jitse verliest in 1/16-fin van de latere 3° Francis Damier (°01; Fra; 73°WRL; 1°EK’20 u21/-90kg als Frans junior kampioen); 

-- Sophie Berger (°97; /-78kg; Mons; 58° WRL): 7° (0 own) tot mijn verbazing was Sophie 1st seeded op deze WCup als 58°WRL; dat heeft dan alles te maken met haar 5°-plaats op de GP Zagreb’21 (na de OG weet je wel; en haar enige top-8 uit een WTour), en haar één-overwinning tegen een Saoudische op de GSL Abu Dhabi’22; haar laatste podium: 3° WCup Oberwart in Sep-2022, zowat 10 maand na haar knie-operatie door Dr. Declercq in Antwerpen; hier in Sofia verliest ze 2x kansloos vóór de reguliere 4′min tegen de 2° en 5°.
