4 Tips Toward Balancing Our Bodies In Our Modern World
The body's internal system is a delicate system of balance. Too much of one thing, too little of another, and the non-existence of something else can send your total body and being out of whack. The inner weaving and connection of the physical, emotional, and astral body is one mass network of balance that we must enter into as gently as possibly if we are to better understand the body and build a better relationship with ourselves.
Right now as I type, I am craving a cup of coffee and finishing up a beautifully crafted donut from DOUGH in NYC. This blood orange donut is a like a graceful ballet on the palate of the tongue. Just amazing. And their glazed donuts are a perfect pitch of sweetness and dough. Now, I don’t eat like this everyday. I can’t even recall my last run-in with a doughnut. It was many, many years ago but I allowed myself the indulgence since it was not part of my regular everyday diet. I try to make coffee a “once-in-awhile” treat. Since I am not a regular coffee drinker, I know that when I am craving coffee, my body is requiring it’s medicinal nature such as its attributes for energy and clearing of the liver.
Sometimes the things we assume, or are told, are healthy for individuals can create imbalance in our personal bodily systems. I know someone who is allergic to raw apples. Raw Apples?? Yes. So imbalance can activate even from foods that are healthy, which is why the health of a person is personal to his or her own body system. Food intolerances and allergies can create an imbalance in the gut and can cause an imbalance in the brain. It is only within the past several years that doctors have explored and are continuing to expand upon the gut-brain connection.
We can also fall out of balance mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. These imbalances dictate balancing energetically first and then physically. The energetics must precede the physical healing otherwise the full balance cannot be achieved. It would be like making a sandwich without the primary components that make it, what else, a sandwich such as the bread, pitta, or even butter lettuce (for those who prefer it this way) as the foundation of the sandwich.

Sarmassophobia: Fear of Dating is a Real Thing
Sure, it’s fun to say—and might look like a term out of a Dr. Seuss book instead of a textbook—but Sarmassophobia is quite real and it affects a lot of people.
Sarmassophobia is defined as the fear of dating and relationships. Translated literally, it’s the fear of love play. It’s considered to be a social phobia focused on the fear of situations, objects, activities, or people involved in kissing, dating, or flirting.
The fear of getting out there and going on dates can be a little embarrassing, so many people use other excuses to mask the symptoms of Sarmassophobia. Saying they’re “just happy being single” is one of them. Or saying they “don’t like blind dates” after a coworker tries to hook them up with someone is another. But these are also super normal things that a lot of us do. So how do you know the difference?
Here’s what you need to know about what Sarmassophobia really looks like:
It’s often due to a fear of getting pregnant. Even if this is just a first date with no expectation of a goodnight hug, for many people Sarmassophobia is linked to a fear of pregnancy or fear of sex. If someone’s been sexually active and had a scare, or if they assume that the first time being intimate will lead to pregnancy, it makes sense for them to want to back off. It won’t cure Sarmassophobia, but talking to a doctor and getting on birth control—even if they don’t plan to partake in sexual activity—may be a good way to feel a little better. That way, the person will feel like they have control over the situation.
It can come from an underlying fear that sex is bad. This one depends on the person’s upbringing. Technically, Sarmassophobia is a fear of “love play,” meaning that everything from dating to sex is scary. If someone assumes that everyone will expect them to have sex, and they’ve been told that sex is bad by their parents or religious teachers, it can create these types of fears. No matter what, someone’s sex life is in their own hands. There’s no shame in keeping your virginity until marriage, if that’s what you truly want. But fear shouldn’t hold you back from something you truly want either.
It’s something to talk to a professional about. Therapy is helpful for pretty much everyone—even people who think they have everything together, talking about feelings and emotions with someone who’s there for you can make a big difference. Sarmassophobia is something that can get in the way of someone’s life, so it’s important to make a change and find healthy ways to get over these fears.
Sometimes, it stems from past trauma. Not all childhoods are happy—that’s an upsetting, yet true fact. According to Massive Phobia, Sarmassophobia is an isolated phobia, meaning that there’s typically a root cause about why it exists in the first place. If someone was abused, or perhaps their very first relationship pushed a physical relationship earlier than they wanted, it may cause a fear of dating, intimacy, and sex. Again, it’s good to talk about these things with a therapist or counselor. They’re trained to help people move through these issues and maintain a healthy life.
“Getting over it” will take some time. Sarmassophobia is a real phobia that affects many people, mostly women, and it requires time and patience to work through. Psychosexual therapist and relationship counselor Krystal Woodbridge advises that nobody should force it. “Every time you have a negative experience, it will make it worse,” she said to Grazia. “Take a step back. If you had a phobia of snakes you wouldn’t jump into the snake nest.”
If you think you may have Sarmassophobia, don’t let it take over your whole life. If you’ve thought about marriage and kids someday, but the fear of starting a new romance blocks the way, it’ll be much harder accomplishing those milestones if you don’t address how you’re feeling and learn to understand it.
There’s nothing wrong with Sarmassophobia. And there’s no shame in opening up about these issues. In fact, it’s pretty brave.

Anxiety is a natural interaction between our mind and body. It’s typically a warning that something might be happening in our surroundings that demands our attention.
For most of us, anxiety is an unpleasant but fleeting feeling that pops up on occasion during particularly stressful times. For some, anxiety is a regular part of life. And still for others, anxiety is a constant torture: a nightmare they can’t awaken from.
Depending on your level of anxiety, there are techniques you can use to manage it. Here are four we recommend:
Increase Your Awareness
How often are you aware of your own thoughts? Our thoughts tend to bubble up from our self-conscious without much control from our conscious mind. For those experiencing anxiety, many of these thoughts are negative and frightening. However, the majority aren’t based in reality.
Start to pay attention to the thoughts behind the feelings. Remember, you can’t experience a feeling without a thought that precedes it. Instead of thinking the worst will happen, challenge the thought. What is the realistic likelihood the worst will happened on a scale of 1-10?
Countless studies have demonstrated that one of the most effective ways to increase awareness of your thoughts is through meditation. This can be a simple as a 10 second meditation done throughout your day, or a 20 minute meditation practiced regularly. However, it can’t be overstated, the more you practice, the more you will increase awareness of your thoughts and subsequently retrain your mind to process life differently.
Remind Yourself That It’s Just Anxiety
Beyond fearful emotions, anxiety often comes with physical sensations like tightness in the chest, rapid heartbeat and shortness of breath. In other words, sometimes it can feel like you are dying. But you are not. You are simply having a physical response to an irrational fear or thought. Sometimes simply becoming aware of this, reminding yourself that you are OK, and focusing on your breathing is enough to bring the physical symptoms to a manageable level.
Learn Your Triggers
Once you learn to pay attention to your thoughts and remain calm when you’re having a natural reaction to something you perceive as a threat, practice identifying the origin of the perceived threat. Triggers can be people, places, or things. As you begin to increase your awareness, it becomes easier to identify your triggers. S
Sometimes triggers are thought patterns that we aren’t even aware are occurring. If you find yourself suddenly becoming anxious for no apparent reason, stop and focus on your thoughts. Trace your thoughts back until you find the culprit. The more you practice this, the more it becomes second nature.
Sometimes our triggers can be certain people. Do you frequently find your heart rate increasing and your palms sweating when you are around a particular co-worker or acquaintance? Pay special attention to unpleasant physical sensations you may experience when around certain people.
Breathe
This cannot be overstated. Multiple studies have demonstrated that slow, deep breaths have been shown to instantly calm a person. Your heart rate will slow, your muscles will relax, and your entire body will return to a normal state of being. Don’t underestimate the power of just taking a moment to breathe. Breathe in slowly and deeply through your nose, and exhale slowly through your mouth. Sometimes counting as you do this or reciting a calming mantra is helpful as well. Even just doing this for 5 deep breaths can make a world of difference.
