I think about this image all the time. The lighting? The framing? The contrast? The lighting????
Tumblr media

The back lighting makes an outline around mangione, who is the only one with his face turned to the camera… dude.

Day 72
Blazon Arch
Tumblr media
A squad of kestrels set out from Blazon Arch at dawn. I joined them, inserting myself into their conversation. More information: most of the soldiers have already joined Helis' 'holy forces' over the river. The Eclipse, essentially, but it's unclear how much most Shadow Carja know about them. Either way, they've wasted no time pinning all their hopes on Helis' risen machine army, and his twisted doctrine, as he introduced to his citizens in the Sun Ring.
Obviously the women aren't permitted to join Helis in his invasion. They're just spare bodies to keep the forts stocked in the meantime.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sheaf's Flight. Another fortress manned by just a handful of guards. And it looked so imposing from the southern bank. No useful information here.
Tumblr media
Views of the Brightmarket port; Meridian and the Spire growing hazy behind it. I can only imagine the longing they must feel staring at it from afar. In their minds, the only way back to their homeland is to take it by force.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sandstorm started up as I took the road north east on foot. Riding a mount through the Rustwash would be even more risky now. Or so I thought. What was likely more dangerous were the two Rockbreakers that attacked me on the way. I couldn't get away on foot, not across the open sands where they would hear every step. I took them out from the cover of stone; ice bombs and hardpoints mostly, exploding their blaze sacs. Good parts, but it delayed me significantly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The storm cleared by the time I reached Sunfall. It was full of children, running and playing, who last time I was here had been huddled under tarps, most of them sick. Probably from Bahavas' killer stalking the camp. I spoke briefly to Shianah and to Abas. She's doing a lot better now, though still lacks the energy to play with the others. I wonder, was it Bahavas' man that caused her illness in the first place?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The gates to the Citadel were open. Not many soldiers inside, except their commanding officers; plenty of nobles, hunters and servants, priests still vying for Bahavas' position. Sacrifices in the Sun Ring were in full swing, despite the tribe's dire circumstances. The stands were packed watching three condemned prisoners trying to avoid a Behemoth's charge. I suppose its an indicator of stability for them, something to keep the people occupied on the bloodshed they exiled themselves for, instead of the impending conflict.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rumours abound in the city. I tried to keep a low profile, not initiating conversations myself but listening to others talk, waiting for their talk to find me. A noblewoman excitedly told me of the female kestrels now being stationed at the fortresses on the riverbank, and about the building force in the western jungles.
To the tavern then; plenty of gossip there. Most of the meagre goods smuggled into the city are now being diverted to Helis. There was no hint of other outposts or contingents of Faro machines. All the supplies are going one way. Helis must be confident. He's probably right to be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The palace was shut off. I wonder if anyone's living inside these days. Whatever strategic centre the Shadow Carja have, it's not here, it's in the ravine across the water. The servants were more willing to talk than the soldiers, probably because they were afraid of me., but I couldn't help that. Helis hasn't been in the Citadel in over a week, apparently. He left a few of the military's highest and most ancient officers in charge as the city has slowly emptied of soldiers. He's put all his hopes in Hades. And I was hoping I could learn something coming here. At least I know they only have one secret camp full of killer machines. It's a cold comfort.
Tumblr media
I cleared out after that. Late afternoon. I didn't want word getting around about my movements in the Citadel. Picked up a Strider just north of the Rustwash.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I rode north east, meaning to stop by in Shattered Kiln before pressing on. Machines had other ideas. I dodged the Ravager's cannon with nothing but some heat grazes from the close blasts (my Strider wasn't as lucky). It was close to destruction when some Glinthawks swooped over and finished it off with their frost spray. I took them down, then continued on foot. Another sandstorm sweeping in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sawtooths spotted me crossing the river and pounced. Tied them both down and overrode one, letting them fight it out. I'd accepted by this point that I wasn't getting to Shattered Kiln before nightfall.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I tried to make it through the next herd undetected. By the time I was spotted it was too late to turn back, and they converged on my position, Behemoths and Longlegs and Scrappers. It was tough, and I was glad for my armour when the Behemoths starting lobbing stones. Tied down and detonated the power cells on the Longlegs; chillwater canisters on the Behemoths and hardpoints to the force loaders. Well past dark once I made it through.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally made it to the camp. Rested by the fire with a few Carja outlanders and escapees from Sunfall. According to them, sacrifices have been ramping up, with people thrown in for the slightest infractions. Seems Helis left the cruelest and dimmest of his men in charge. With so few soldiers in the Citadel and the border forts, escape has been easy for most. I told them to head for Meridian and help defend it if they were willing.
Tumblr media
Traded my sizeable haul of parts, then down to bed.

Me (1 month ago): So… Was anyone going to tell me Joey Batey could go completely feral with a sword, or was I supposed to find out on my own?!
Me (now): Correction! Was anyone going to tell me Joey Batey could go completely feral, or...?!
Look, from now on, I'll just assume Joey tends to go completely feral on everything he does at some point... (At least, this makes a lot of sense now... He's probably not used to cooking, just... grabbing some meat from the fridge and eating it raw or something...)
Also, giggling at the thought of people walking by with their dogs , and wanting to call the police because someone is randomly getting the crap beaten out of them on a wood's trail...

i think image gen can be used like any other artistic tool but I don't really think the big commerical proponents of "ai" are advertising it as a tool, they're adertising it as a solution. I also think it's intellectually dishonest to argue that image generation is exactly like "using photoshop/taking a photograph" because of some generalized "those were also criticized at their conception for being new and scary and disruptive" soundbite. they were not even really criticized for the same reasons. find a better argument.
