An Unsexy Post About Censorship
Sooo...gumroad is shutting down NSFW content sales because of Stripe and Paypal. This is also why Wishtender has been down as well, if you weren't aware. And why Patreon is also cracking down on anything remotely kinky.
(If you're wondering why your favorite FICTIONAL sexual content isn't allowed on most platforms, it's payment processors.)
Please be extra kind to anyone who works with NSFW content right now, whether it be art, writing, audio, photos or video. Whether it be tasteful erotica, or the kinkiest BDSM porn you can think of, we're all in the crosshairs right now.
And, judging by trends from these past few years, this is only going to get worse.
Support NSFW creators where you can, whether by tipping or buying our content (where you still can) or just helping boost content on sites where algorithms want to drown us out.
Call representatives where you can and complain about payment processors acting as arbiters of what YOU are and aren't allowed to pay for and enjoy.
This may be about porn right now, but censorship of this caliber doesn't just stop with porn. Any transgressive (read: non-conservative) media is fair game.
Fight against it where you can. Support creators where you can.
Art is important. Reflections of our sexuality are important. We don't want a world where people aren't free to make or see the things they love and enjoy.
#nyxrambles#Warning: I'm going to get kind of grim in the tags so peace out of you have to.#This bums me out so fucking hard!#I have artist friends who are struggling because their content suddenly goes against these stupid fucking guidelines!#I'm going to have to take my stuff off of Gumroad even though it was previously allowed!#It's hard to not feel like everything is just spiraling toward fascism sometimes yanno?#I am usually opposed to slippery slope arguments but the goal of moral conservativism is to destroy everything that isn't in line with it.#They will not stop until the world reflects their narrow ideals. Like...that's the whole point of it!#Sorry guys I'm just having a rough one.#Between this and being sick for months I'm getting pretty fucking Done.#I'll be okay but I'm not going to pretend it isn't hard and scary.

ars poetica? polish short-form poetry in (english) translation tournament: submissions now open!
inspired by @polish-art-tournament, the poetry edition is finally here! sorry for the long wait; hopefully it will be worth it!
submissions:
one poem per submission. submit here.
we ask you for the following details: (points with the asterix * mean that they are obligatory and without them the submission will not go through) : *the author. *title in english (translation), title in polish/minority language, *translator’s name, *full text in english, original text, source: (website, anthology, publication etc.), photo/screenshot., propaganda: (both for the poem and the translation of it).
the submissions will be open until OCTOBER 5th. we want to give you plenty of time to actually read and choose your favourites!
general rules:
the original language should be polish or a minority language – we do not necessarily subscribe to the official governmental list of minority languages; simply ask yourself about the heritage/connection of the author to poland; we also accept poems translated from polish that were written by authors who do not necessarily identify themselves as polish. etc. in short: we are flexible. we want to celebrate polish poetry and its translation in all its range and diversity.
however, unfortunately, as we want to keep the tournament as accessible as possible, we accept only poetry translated into english; still, you are also welcome to additionally submit translations into other languages, if they exists and you want to share them (link them in the “other” rubric.)
we also accept self-authored translations, but they ought to be published somewhere outside of the tournament; by ‘published’ we also mean ‘posted’; so feel free to translate, post on tumblr (or other accessible social media) and send us the link.
where to find polish poetry?
websites: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/, https://allpoetry.com/ (this is a website where you can publish your own poetry, but it also has a fair amount of translations – for example of baczyński’s works. search by author), www.poemhunter.com, www.poetryinternational.com
open sources and internet archives: for example archive.org (numerous positions available: for instance, polish writing today by celina wieniewska, postwar poetry anthology by miłosz, five centuries of polish poetry by peterkiewicz)
your local library. there are more bilingual and english-language editions of polish poetry collections that you would expect.
a rumour says that admins have a google drive with a collection of polish poetry books scraped from open sources… you can find out if it’s true by dm-ing @tsaricides.
if you have any sources that are not included here that you’d like to be: please let us know. sharing is caring.
#please let us know if anything does not work!#housekeeping tag#polish poetry#and please reblog! this will be fun as long as we have enough submissions to actually create a bracket!

Hello LockNation artists and friends! You are all so creative, and I’m always so impressed by your art.
There’s literally SO MUCH art, I’m drowning in art, I can’t reblog art fast enough.
Each social media platform is different, and I love our little community and would love to share the amazing artwork of tumblr fans with Jonathan.
My plan is to take your art submissions and compile them into a photo book, which I will then figure out how to get to him!
PLEASE READ THIS WHOLE POST BEFORE PROCEEDING!! THANK YOU!!
DATE TO NOTE: Midnight GMT on Friday 24th January 2025
WHAT TO SUBMIT:
Artwork can be from any Stroudverse book! You may need to specify to me which universe if it’s not clear, but I know there are other brilliant pieces out there for Bartimaeus, Scarlett & Browne etc.
Please only submit your own artwork.
Some of you are brilliant, prolific artists, but I will be limited by page numbers and I have no idea how many submissions I will get, so please only submit your favourite pieces of artwork, and not your whole portfolio! Can we please limit it to a maximum of TWO pieces of artwork per contributor. Thank you. If you upload more than two, I’ll just have to pick my own favourites 🤷🏻♀️
(In the event that we have more space, I’ll open up to additional submissions, but we’ll see how it goes!)
SFW artwork only please, obvs
LOGISTICS:
We’re working with Google Drive here.
Please name the file so it includes:
1. Your name (if you want to share)
2. Your tumblr url (so we can credit you!) (and also in case something goes awry and I need to contact you about resending etc.)
3. And, only if you’re happy to share, what country you are based in (because I think that would be cute)
4. If it’s your first or second submission (1 or 2)
Examples:
Bobby (bobbys-not-that-small) UK (1)
random-weird (submission 2)
If you don’t have a Google account (I.e. can’t upload to the drive), please let me know and I would be happy for you to email me the files or try to work out an alternative.
I think for virus-avoiding reasons I won’t be able to accept submissions via you guys sending me things like Dropbox or WeTransfer files.
Please submit files of a decent enough quality that they can be printed (probably in CMYK colour if able/you know what that means) but NOT humongous file sizes, else my GDrive will Freak Out!
If physical artwork, a scan is always best if possible, else a good quality photograph in bright enough lighting please. Consider zipping files if they’re big, but again, insane quality is not needed!
PLEASE NOTE:
This Google Drive will be visible to all contributors and those with the link, so please do not include personal information that you are not comfortable with others seeing.
Now, it feels a bit mean to say “only art from artists that call tumblr home”, but that’s exactly what I’m going to do for simplicity’s sake. Please can we keep it to people that predominantly share their artwork on tumblr rather than, say, people based on instagram who have an auto feature on that cross posts to tumblr. This is a project for our community, at heart.
If you have any questions about this, then please ask them in the REPLIES of this post, so Q&A doesn’t get lost in reblogs.
HOW TO SUBMIT
If you have art to submit, please DM me and I will share the Google Drive link with you directly. I ask that you don’t share this link or post it out anywhere so we can control who has access to the folder.
Be patient please! I am not always on tumblr every day, plus it’s the Christmas period for me so I’m going to be at home with family a fair amount. Uploading doesn’t take very long, and I will make sure I get back to you as soon as I can.
CUTOFF DATE FOR SUBMISSIONS:
Midnight GMT on Friday 24th January 2025
Lastly, please tell your tumblr artist friends so we can get as many people involved as we can!
Much love,
Bobby x

What will it take to get the thesis 👀👀
literally nothing, i will talk about brocedes on the internet for free any day of the week.
okay so, one of the things i find fascinating about it is that it's only that clue "i love to drive but i don't really like the attention and media that comes with the job" that lewis seems to focus on. because nico was a monaco princess and has never done any kind of manual labour in his life let alone national service. look at the video of him trying to chop down a tree for an environmental project with his extreme e team if you don't believe me. but lewis ignores that (maybe because the woman says that he'll get it after the next clue). kimi is the obvious choice for a driver who hates media, but lewis was never especially close with kimi, but he was close with nico. and nico did hate the media and the attention that came with formula 1.
something that he and numerous other people around him have said consistently throughout his career is that he's shy. one journalist specifically said that it was a finnish kind of shyness, where he was hesitant to share parts of himself with the world. although i think will buxton's "contenders" article is ridiculous, there are some important things in it. buxton says that nico tried to take control of the questioning during press conferences etc. and if you follow his career, you see that where nico has shared himself with the press and with the world it is very much on his terms. he wanted to be able to be the one to define himself and his image, and it actually backfired spectacularly several times because a lot of journalists in motorsport (will buxton for example) really resented it and became more negative in response.
a lot of people look at the media from nico's career and think that he was very boring or uptight or had no personality. and the truth is that he's actually incredibly fascinating but it never came across because he disliked the media aspects of the job so much (in fairness the media also hated him for just doing his job, and he literally once got told to smile more during an interview because they disliked his demeanour).
even when you look at things like his youtube channel, it was very much the first thing he tried after leaving f1, and since exploring more and finding other projects to be passionate about he's significantly decreased his usage (to an upsetting level to those of us who loved it). when he comes to commentate races it's because he loves racing. like i truly do not believe you can listen to nico talk about max verstappen's driving as art and not think that he's there because he loves the sport and even if he's not racing anymore the love is still there.
another factor for me is that nico's been surrounded by the media and fan attention since he was a child because of his father and his surname. there are photos of literal toddler nico in the williams garage with his parents. the first time he ever met jenson button and jenson nearly threw hands with a 12 year old is immortalised in photos. nico signed his first autograph at nine, because a fan of his dad's said "just in case". the media and the attention has been an intrusion on his life for literally his entire life. you can see from the way he's very careful about what he posts of his children that he wants to give them privacy and respect in their childhood. i do think the media intrusion etc. is significantly worse now than it was when nico was growing up, but i do think that nico's own childhood experiences have influenced the way he parents his children.
and coming back to lewis, the truth about lewis and nico is that they really were best friends. for a while they were pretty much each other's only friend. nico does know lewis better than most people in the world and lewis knows nico better than almost anyone in the world. that just comes with growing up with someone and being there for the life moments that come to define them. so lewis knows that nico is a bit shy, and he knows that nico has never liked media attention. and even though kimi is the absolute obvious choice for disliking media, the first person lewis thinks of for that is nico. because lewis can never forget nico

the faces I reflect
💋 through my exploration of beauty, identity, and the art of reflection, i have turned the mirror inward—toward myself and those who echo my features in the public eye. guided by curiosity and a quiet reverence for fate, i have gathered the names of celebrities i resemble, whether through shared essence or striking similarity, as observed by others. while surface comparisons may appear coincidental, there lies an undercurrent of astrological nuance. birth charts, after all, weave their own stories—sometimes mirroring others through planetary dominances, shared inclinations, or complementary placements. in this brief analysis, i examine not only these surface parallels but also the deeper connections between us.
to preface, i have an ashlesha ascendant that conjuncts my ashlesha jupiter in the first house, magha moon sitting in the second house, mula sun in the sixth house, conjuncting my uttara ashada mercury. it’s also worth mentioning that my vishakha venus and vishakha mars in the fourth house aspect my ascendant. these aspects i feel, and through third party chart anaylsis, make up the largest part of my appearance.
while i lean more towards tropical astrology, i’ve noticed that when it comes to appearance, vedic astrology tends to be much more accurate and often aligns with synchronicities that make sense to me. i’m by no means a professional in either vedic or tropical astrology—these are simply my personal observations based on my own chart. i’ve found joy in exploring both systems individually and together, appreciating the insights and patterns each one can reveal. this is just something i’ve noticed and thought would be interesting to share. the placements mentioned for these celebrities are based on information available on the internet. while birth times and chart details can vary in accuracy, they provide an interesting foundation for observation and comparison. as with any astrological analysis, these placements are shared with curiosity and a lighthearted approach rather than absolute certainty.
💋 china anne mcclain (magha sun, ashlesha venus, magha rahu)
the first and most frequent mention is china anne mcclain—a comparison i’ve heard so often it feels woven into my reflection. between her and lisa bonet, these names have followed me the most, to the point where even my photos app seems convinced her pictures are mine. the resemblance feels uncanny, and while some of our features differ in size, there’s an undeniable thread of similarity that people often say could make us sisters. astrologically, it doesn’t surprise me; there’s a shared energy in the planetary influences that shape us, particularly those ruled by ketuvian and mercurial influences.
as i look back at older media featuring china anne mcclain, i can’t help but see glimpses of my younger self reflected in her—almost as though looking into a mirror. it’s a surreal experience, like rediscovering parts of myself through her image, and at times, it truly feels like a sight to behold.
being compared to someone as stunning as china always feels like an honor, especially since we’re both in the acting industry—a shared path that makes the connection feel even more significant. the more i’ve acknowledged the resemblance, the more i’ve found myself looking to her for inspiration, particularly when it comes to style. it’s as though seeing her is like seeing a version of myself in a different light, and i often find pieces she wears that i imagine would suit me just as well. it’s a quiet connection, both familiar and affirming, and i can’t help but admire her even more for it.
💋 lisa bonet (magha jupiter, i suspect ashlesha ascendant)
another very frequent mention, rivaling china anne mcclain in frequency, is lisa bonet. i’ve been told for years that i resemble her, to the point of being called more her twin than her own daughter, regardless of my hairstyle, and while i used to attribute it to our similar fair-toned complexions, i’ve come to see more of my features reflected in hers over time. people have described it as a certain nostalgic beauty—an essence that seems to linger in both of us—and i can’t help but feel deeply honored to be compared to her. lisa’s beauty has always felt timeless, and being placed in such company feels almost surreal.
out of everyone i’ve been likened to, she is the one i sometimes see most clearly in myself. while i still find a strong resemblance to chyna anne mcclain, especially in essence, complexion-wise i naturally lean more toward lisa. growing up, i always thought she was the epitome of “cool”—effortless, magnetic, and the very definition of an it girl. it’s no surprise i’ve found myself subtly emulating her style and demeanor, as she represents a kind of quiet confidence i’ve always admired.
surprisingly, lisa and i share only a similar ascendant (even though on most sights it says her ascendant is in punarvasu, i feel it is in ashlesha), which has made me reconsider the significance of my own ascendant. for so long, i’ve placed greater weight on my moon nakshatra, overlooking how powerful this placement truly is. as an honorable mention, her sun falls in my ketu nakshatra and her moon in my rahu nakshatra, adding a fascinating mercurial influence to her chart. perhaps it’s these unseen threads—subtle yet undeniable—that make the resemblance feel so natural, a connection that extends beyond what meets the eye.
💋 tessa thompson (magha moon)
another celebrity i’ve been compared to—though very slightly more sparingly and quite recently—is tessa thompson, who is absolutely stunning. i’ve admired her work for years, so hearing this comparison, especially for the first time while getting my hair done one day, felt both unexpected and flattering. when i mentioned it to my mom, she immediately agreed, saying she could definitely see it, despite the differences in our bone structure. admittedly, i hadn’t noticed it much at first, but now, when i look at her, there’s a resemblance i can’t deny.
tessa and i also share a ketuvian moon, which aligns with a pattern i’ve noticed: the people i resemble most often share an ascendant or moon placement with me. there’s something fascinating about that subtle astrological link, as if it explains why these comparisons surface so naturally. what i find even more comforting, though, is that many of the celebrities i’ve been told i look like are actresses. as an aspiring actress myself, there’s a certain reassurance in knowing i’m in such good company—or, at the very least, that i could be someone’s doppelgänger on screen.
honorable mentions :
pinkpanthersss (ashwini venus) now, i’ll be honest—this is one comparison i don’t really see at all, and even my mom doesn’t see it. yet, my older sister and a few people on the internet have pointed it out, so it’s a mention worth including. surprisingly, we don’t share any exact placements, though we do have a few ketuvian-ruled nakshatras in common, which may lend a subtle energetic similarity. while there isn’t much astrological linkage between us beyond that, i’ve still been told on occasion that i resemble her. it’s not as frequent as some of the other comparisons, but it happens enough to have caught my attention. even if i don’t see it myself, it’s fascinating how others perceive similarities that sometimes go beyond what we’re able to recognize.
doja cat (vishakha venus, sun, & ascendant) a comparison i’ve received sparingly but often enough to take note. while we don’t share any exact placements within the same nakshatra, there are subtle connections between our charts. her mars aligns with the nakshatra of my sun, and her sun, ascendant, and venus nakshatras mirror my venus nakshatra, which aspects my ascendant. i’ve been told that, from certain angles, i resemble her—enough that i could pass as a stunt double or doppelgänger of some sort. at first, i thought these comparisons were tied to our lighter complexions, but over time, people have specified that i resemble a younger version of her. though i hadn’t seen it myself initially, hearing it repeatedly has made me pause and reflect. it’s a comparison i now find worth mentioning, as it’s been brought up enough times to leave an impression.
halle berry : (magha moon, ashlesha venus & sun) a name that has followed me through passing comments at work, shared observations from coworkers, and the casual assessments of strangers. admittedly, i don’t see the resemblance myself, yet the repetition of it has made me pause. sometimes, beauty can be more than what is plainly visible; it can exist in essence, in the intangible, in a certain way one carries themselves that draws a familiar reflection.
💋 perhaps there are unseen threads that tether us, subtle overlaps in energy or expression that extend beyond what the mirror shows. halle’s presence has long been synonymous with a kind of poised magnetism—graceful yet undeniably powerful. it is a quality that cannot be distilled into features alone, as though it is whispered into existence by something greater. while i remain uncertain of the likeness, there is a quiet acknowledgment that others have seen it—a connection, however faint, written into the nuances of energy and expression that we carry.
💋 in reflecting on these comparisons, i can’t help but feel honored to be in the company of such beautiful, talented women. it’s fascinating to see how astrology connects us in ways we don’t always expect—through subtle threads, shared energies, and placements that reveal themselves quietly but meaningfully. every part of the chart holds significance, from the aspects we value most to those we might overlook—loose connections, harsh angles, or seemingly minor placements all contribute to shaping who we are. in my one face, there are a million—the faces of others reflected through shared features, the essence of similarities, and the faces of my ancestors carried through me. it’s a reminder of how interconnected we all are, not just through appearance but through the energies we hold and the worlds we observe around us. beauty, after all, is in the eye of the beholder, and i am so grateful to be seen and compared in such great company.
until next time, continue observing xoxo

A lack of curiosity, knowledge and understanding of fandom practices and behaviors are among the reasons why conservative views are more and more widely spread and accepted. While it is true that this is a phenomenon visible at a large scale in online spaces, I will only talk about kpop fandoms in this post.
A complete ignorance towards a country's laws, cultural and societal practices is also a contributing factor to this situation, which is then paired with homophobia. This mess of a melting pot is the root of dismissing any queer interpretation of a kpop's idol work or self presentation, while also trying to demonize shipping practices at the same time.
There has been extensive academic research done on these topics, their legitimacy and how it is partly a way in which fans navigate these spaces and deal with their own queerness as well.
It is most unfortunate that certain idols, particularly those that have either pushed boundaries and used art as a self expression in a way that stands out from normative understandings of gender expression and sexuality, are also those of which a vocal part of their fandom use in order to be turned into some poster children of straightness.
There is no other accomplishment for a group or individuals promoting this other than pushing a moralist, conservative agenda.
We should not normalize the lack of education, media illiteracy and the ignorance that comes with it. Particularly in a climate in which this is weaponized in ways to control people's views. Going beyond bad takes on twitter, reading is fundamental. Pick up a book, read an article or two and you will become a little more wiser and and a little less at risk of becoming a victim of kpop stan brain rot.
In the meantime, with a little bit of a shameless self promotion, I do recommend reading this piece I wrote a few years ago, called Framing Gender Identity Through Masquerade. Hybrid Masculinities in Jimin's Photo-folio.
And also check out @peppertaemint for a post on Taemin's gender presentation and its complexities. There are a few more similar topics addressed on the blog, for anyone who wants to delve deeper into that.
What you will find is that a complex conversation backed by research is more often than not a more fair approach and one which enriches our knowledge and our attempts at understanding and conversing with the art and artists we encounter.

Some thoughts on Cara
So some of you may have heard about Cara, the new platform that a lot of artists are trying out. It's been around for a while, but there's been a recent huge surge of new users, myself among them. Thought I'd type up a lil thing on my initial thoughts.
First, what is Cara?
From their About Cara page:
Cara is a social media and portfolio platform for artists. With the widespread use of generative AI, we decided to build a place that filters out generative AI images so that people who want to find authentic creatives and artwork can do so easily. Many platforms currently accept AI art when it’s not ethical, while others have promised “no AI forever” policies without consideration for the scenario where adoption of such technologies may happen at the workplace in the coming years. The future of creative industries requires nuanced understanding and support to help artists and companies connect and work together. We want to bridge the gap and build a platform that we would enjoy using as creatives ourselves. Our stance on AI: ・We do not agree with generative AI tools in their current unethical form, and we won’t host AI-generated portfolios unless the rampant ethical and data privacy issues around datasets are resolved via regulation. ・In the event that legislation is passed to clearly protect artists, we believe that AI-generated content should always be clearly labeled, because the public should always be able to search for human-made art and media easily.
Should note that Cara is independently funded, and is made by a core group of artists and engineers and is even collaborating with the Glaze project. It's very much a platform by artists, for artists!
Should also mention that in being a platform for artists, it's more a gallery first, with social media functionalities on the side. The info below will hopefully explain how that works.
Next, my actual initial thoughts using it, and things that set it apart from other platforms I've used:
1) When you post, you can choose to check the portfolio option, or to NOT check it. This is fantastic because it means I can have just my art organized in my gallery, but I can still post random stuff like photos of my cats and it won't clutter things. You can also just ramble/text post and it won't affect the gallery view!
2) You can adjust your crop preview for your images. Such a simple thing, yet so darn nice.
3) When you check that "Add to portfolio," you get a bunch of additional optional fields: Title, Field/Medium, Project Type, Category Tags, and Software Used. It's nice that you can put all this info into organized fields that don't take up text space.
4) Speaking of text, 5000 character limit is niiiiice. If you want to talk, you can.
5) Two separate feeds, a "For You" algorithmic one, and "Following." The "Following" actually appears to be full chronological timeline of just folks you follow (like Tumblr). Amazing.
6) Now usually, "For You" being set to home/default kinda pisses me off because generally I like curating my own experience, but not here, for this handy reason: if you tap the gear symbol, you can ADJUST your algorithm feed!
So you can choose what you see still!!! AMAZING. And, again, you still have your Following timeline too.
7) To repeat the stuff at the top of this post, its creation and intent as a place by artists, for artists. Hopefully you can also see from the points above that it's been designed with artists in mind.
8) No GenAI images!!!! There's a pop up that says it's not allowed, and apparently there's some sort of detector thing too. Not sure how reliable the latter is, but so far, it's just been a breath of fresh air, being able to scroll and see human art art and art!
To be clear, Cara's not perfect and is currently pretty laggy, and you can get errors while posting (so far, I've had more success on desktop than the mobile app), but that's understandable, given the small team. They'll need time to scale. For me though, it's a fair tradeoff for a platform that actually cares about artists.
Currently it also doesn't allow NSFW, not sure if that'll change given app store rules.
As mentioned above, they're independently funded, which means the team is currently paying for Cara itself. They have a kofi set up for folks who want to chip in, but it's optional. Here's the link to the tweet from one of the founders:
And a reminder that no matter that the platform itself isn't selling our data to GenAI, it can still be scraped by third parties. Protect your work with Glaze and Nightshade!
Anyway, I'm still figuring stuff out and have only been on Cara a few days, but I feel hopeful, and I think they're off to a good start.
I hope this post has been informative!
Lastly, here's my own Cara if you want to come say hi! Not sure at all if I'll be active on there, but if you're an artist like me who is keeping an eye out for hopefully nice communities, check it out!
#YukiPri rambles#cara#cara app#social media#artists on tumblr#review#longpost#long post#mostly i'd already typed this up on twitter so i figured why not share it here too#also since tumblr too is selling our data to GenAI

A year in illustration, 2023 edition (part one)
(This is part one; part two is here.)
I am objectively very bad at visual art. I am bad at vision, period – I'm astigmatic, shortsighted, color blind, and often miss visual details others see. I can't even draw a stick-figure. To top things off, I have cataracts in both eyes and my book publishing/touring schedule is so intense that I keep having to reschedule the surgeries. But despite my vast visual deficits, I thoroughly enjoy making collages for this blog.
For many years now – decades – I've been illustrating my blog posts by mixing public domain and Creative Commons art with work that I can make a good fair use case for. As bad as art as I may be, all this practice has paid off. Call it unseemly, but I think I'm turning out some terrific illustrations – not all the time, but often enough.
Last year, I rounded up my best art of the year:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/12/25/a-year-in-illustration/
And I liked reflecting on the year's art so much, I decided I'd do it again. Be sure to scroll to the bottom for some downloadables – freely usable images that I painstakingly cut up with the lasso tool in The Gimp.
The original AD&D hardcover cover art is seared into my psyche. For several years, there were few images I looked at so closely as these. When Hasbro pulled some world-beatingly sleazy stuff with the Open Gaming License, I knew just how to mod Dave Trampier's 'Eve Of Moloch' from the cover of the Players' Handbook. Thankfully, bigger nerds than me have identified all the fonts in the image, making the remix a doddle.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/12/beg-forgiveness-ask-permission/#whats-a-copyright-exception
Even though I don't keep logs or collect any analytics, I can say with confidence that "Tiktok's Enshittification" was the most popular thing I published on Pluralistic this year. I mixed some public domain Brother's Grimm art, mixed with a classic caricature of Boss Tweed, and some very cheesy royalty-free/open access influencer graphics. One gingerbread cottage social media trap, coming up:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/21/potemkin-ai/#hey-guys
To illustrate the idea of overcoming walking-the-plank fear (as a metaphor for writing when it feels like you suck) I mixed public domain stock of a plank, a high building and legs, along with a procedurally generated Matrix "code waterfall" and a vertiginous spiral ganked from a Heinz Bunse photo of a German office lobby.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/01/22/walking-the-plank/
Finding a tasteful way to illustrate a story about Johnson & Johnson losing a court case after it spent a generation tricking women into dusting their vulvas with asbestos-tainted talcum was a challenge. The tulip (featured in many public domain images) was a natural starting point. I mixed it with Jesse Wagstaff's image of a Burning Man dust-storm and Mike Mozart's shelf-shot of a J&J talcum bottle.

"Google's Chatbot Panic" is about Google's long history of being stampeded into doing stupid things because its competitors are doing them. Once it was Yahoo, now it's Bing. Tenniel's Tweedle Dee and Dum were a good starting point. I mixed in one of several Humpty Dumpty editorial cartoon images from 19th century political coverage that I painstakingly cut out with the lasso tool on a long plane-ride. This is one of my favorite Humpties, I just love the little 19th C businessmen trying to keep him from falling! I finished it off with HAL 9000's glowing red eye, my standard 'this is about AI' image, which I got from Cryteria's CC-licensed SVG.

Though I started writing about Luddites in my January, 2022 Locus column, 2023 was the Year of the Luddite, thanks to Brian Merchant's outstanding Blood In the Machine:

When it came time to illustrate "Gig Work Is the Opposite of Steampunk," I found a public domain weaver's loft, and put one of Cryteria's HAL9000 eyes in the window. Magpie Killjoy's Steampunk Magazine poster, 'Love the Machine, Hate the Factory,' completed the look.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/03/12/gig-work-is-the-opposite-of-steampunk/
For the "small, non-profit school" that got used as an excuse to bail out Silicon Valley Bank, I brought back Humpty Dumpty, mixing him with a Hogwartsian castle, a brick wall texture, and an ornate, gilded frame. I love how this one came out. This Humpty was made for the SVB bailout.

The RESTRICT Act would have federally banned Tiktok – a proposal that was both technically unworkable and unconstitutional. I found an early 20th century editorial cartoon depicting Uncle Sam behind a fortress wall that was keeping a downtrodden refugee family out of America. I got rid of most of the family, giving the dad a Tiktok logo head, and I put Cryteria's HAL9000 eyes over each cannonmouth. Three Boss Tweed moneybag-head caricatures, adorned with Big Tech logos, rounded it out.

When Flickr took decisive action to purge the copyleft trolls who'd been abusing its platform, I knew I wanted to illustrate this with Lucifer being cast out of heaven, and the very best one of those comes from John Milton, who is conveniently well in the public domain. The Flickr logo suggested a bicolored streaming-light-of-heaven motif that just made it.

Old mainframe ads are a great source of stock for a "Computer Says No" image. And Congress being a public building, there are lots of federal (and hence public domain) images of its facade.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/04/cbo-says-no/#wealth-tax
When I wrote about the Clarence Thomas/Harlan Crow bribery scandal, it was easy to find Mr. Kjetil Ree's great image of the Supreme Court building. Thomas being a federal judge, it was easy to find a government photo of his head, but it's impossible to find an image of him in robes at a decent resolution. Luckily, there are tons of other federal judges who've been photographed in their robes! Boss Tweed with the dollar-sign head was a great stand-in for Harlan Crow (no one knows what he looks like anyway). Gilding Thomas's robes was a simple matter of superimposing a gold texture and twiddling with the layers.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/06/clarence-thomas/#harlan-crow
"Gig apps trap reverse centaurs in wage-stealing Skinner boxes" is one of my best titles. This is the post where I introduce the idea of "twiddling" as part of the theory of enshittification, and explain how it relates to "reverse centaurs" – people who assist machines, rather than the other way around. Finding a CC licensed modular synth was much harder than I thought, but I found Stephen Drake's image and stitched it into a mandala. Cutting out the horse's head for the reverse centaur was a lot of work (manes are a huuuuge pain in the ass), but I love how his head sits on the public domain high-viz-wearing warehouse worker's body I cut up (thanks, OSHA!). Seeing as this is an horrors-of-automation story, Cryteria's HAL9000 eyes make an appearance.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/12/algorithmic-wage-discrimination/#fishers-of-men
Rockefeller's greatest contribution to our culture was inspiring many excellent unflattering caricatures. The IWW's many-fists-turning-into-one-fist image made it easy to have the collective might of workers toppling the original robber-baron.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/14/aiming-at-dollars/#not-men
I link to this post explaining how to make good Mastodon threads at least once a week, so it's a good thing the graphic turned out so well. Close-cropping the threads from a public domain yarn tangle worked out great. Eugen Rochko's Mastodon logo was and is the only Affero-licensed image ever to appear on Pluralistic.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/16/how-to-make-the-least-worst-mastodon-threads/
I spent hours on the sofa one night painstakingly cutting up and reassembling the cover art from a science fiction pulp. I have a folder full of color-corrected, high-rez scans from an 18th century anatomy textbook, and the cross-section head-and-brain is the best of the lot.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/05/04/analytical-democratic-theory/#epistocratic-delusions
Those old French anatomical drawings are an endless source of delight to me. Take one cross-sectioned noggin, mix in an old PC mainboard, and a vector art illo of a virtuous cycle with some of Cryteria's HAL9000 eyes and you've got a great illustration of Google's brain-worms.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/05/14/googles-ai-hype-circle/
Ireland's privacy regulator is but a plaything in Big Tech's hand, but it's goddamned hard to find an open-access Garda car. I manually dressed some public domain car art in Garda livery, painstakingly tracing it over the panels. The (public domain) baby's knit cap really hides the seams from replacing the baby's head with HAL9000's eye.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/05/15/finnegans-snooze/#dirty-old-town
Naked-guy-in-a-barrel bankruptcy images feel like something you can find in an old Collier's or Punch, but I came up snake-eyes and ended up frankensteining a naked body into a barrel for the George Washington crest on the Washington State flag. It came out well, but harvesting the body parts from old muscle-beach photos left George with some really big guns. I tried five different pairs of suspenders here before just drawing in black polyhedrons with little grey dots for rivets.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/06/03/when-the-tide-goes-out/#passive-income
Illustrating Amazon's dominance over the EU coulda been easy – just stick Amazon 'A's in place of the yellow stars that form a ring on the EU flag. So I decided to riff on Plutarch's Alexander, out of lands to conquer. Rama's statue legs were nice and high-rez. I had my choice of public domain ruin images, though it was harder thank expected to find a good Amazon box as a plinth for those broken-off legs.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/06/14/flywheel-shyster-and-flywheel/#unfulfilled-by-amazon
God help me, I could not stop playing with this image of a demon-haunted IoT car. All those reflections! The knife sticking out of the steering wheel, the multiple Munsch 'Scream'ers, etc etc. The more I patchked with it, the better it got, though. This one's a banger.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/07/24/rent-to-pwn/#kitt-is-a-demon
To depict a "data-driven dictatorship," I ganked elements of heavily beribboned Russian military dress uniforms, replacing the head with HAL9000's eye. I turned the foreground into the crowds from the Nuremberg rallies and filled the sky with Matrix code waterfall.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/07/26/dictators-dilemma/#garbage-in-garbage-out-garbage-back-in
The best thing about analogizing DRM to demonic possession is the wealth of medieval artwork to choose from . This one comes from the 11th century 'Compendium rarissimum totius Artis Magicae sistematisatae per celeberrimos Artis hujus Magistros.' I mixed in the shiny red Tesla (working those reflections!), and a Tesla charger to make my point.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/07/28/edison-not-tesla/#demon-haunted-world
Yet more dividends from those old French anatomical plates: a flayed skull, a detached jaw, a quack electronic gadget, a Wachowski code waterfall and some HAL 9000 eyes and you've got a truly unsettling image of machine-compelled speech.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/08/02/self-incrimination/#wei-bai-bai
I had no idea this would work out so well, but daaaamn, crossfading between a Wachowski code waterfall and a motherboard behind a roiling thundercloud is dank af.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/08/03/there-is-no-cloud/#only-other-peoples-computers
Of all the turkeys-voting-for-Christmas self-owns conservative culture warriors fall for, few can rival the "banning junk fees is woke" hustle. Slap a US-flag Punisher logo on and old-time card imprinter, add a GOP logo to a red credit-card blank, and then throw in a rustic barn countertop and you've got a junk-fee extracter fit for the Cracker Barrel.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/08/04/owning-the-libs/#swiper-no-swiping
Putting the Verizon logo on the Hinderberg was an obvious gambit (even if I did have to mess with the flames a lot), but the cutout of Paul Marcarelli as the 'can you hear me now?' guy, desaturated and contrast-matched, made it sing.
https://pluralistic.net/2023/08/10/smartest-guys-in-the-room/#can-you-hear-me-now
Note to self: Tux the Penguin is really easy to source in free/open formats! He looks great with HAL9000 eyes.

Rockwell's self-portrait image is a classic; that made it a natural for a HAL9000-style remix about AI art. I put a bunch of time into chopping and remixing Rockwell's signature to give it that AI look, and added as many fingers as would fit on each hand.

'In the Umbro-Sabellian area the production of small bronze statues developed around the beginning of the 5th c. BC.' 'Divinities are often reproduced, among which the portrayal of Minerva on the attack, wearing a high-crested Attic helmet and a cuirass with a gorgoneion in the middle of the breast, an outstandingly valuable specimen from the 2nd-half of the 5th c. LOVE IS CONCOCTED FROM ESTERS AND KETONES- CH. 00: PROLOGUE
NOTES: I hope this chapter gives you an idea of the setting and what's to come!
TAGLIST: @tragedy-of-commons, @mitsvriii, @harque, @nariism, @vxnuslogy, @akutasoda , @flowery-jazz , @gabile18 , @khoncore
Somewhere within the heart of the universe lies a perfumery on an unremarkable planet, its simplicity belittling its fame. From its exterior, it looks like any other shop on the street. Simple, with a cute sign and clean exterior. They’re closed on Mondays but for the rest of the week, they open at ten am on the weekdays and close at six pm with extended hours on the weekends.
The inside, however, tells a different story. It’s far more spacious than the outside would lead one to believe. The poor, overworked air purifiers can be heard running 24/7 to prevent the air from becoming suffocating. The shelves go as far back as the eye can see and are stocked with bottles of different colors, sizes, and designs- each of them hefty and works of art in their own right. Each of them have different scent profiles and all of them are handcrafted by the enigmatic owner who formulates and tests each scent in the lab located behind the shop.
… The test subjects just happen to be the two shop assistants who are more than happy to be their boss’ guinea pigs.
The shop itself is split into three sections- male, female, and unisex. Perfumes are arranged based on the fragrance family- fresh, floral, woodsy- before being further arranged by notes- green, fruity, gourmand- since people often walk in wanting to smell like a specific note, which the owner and shop assistants are happy to work with. However, there’s a rumor that you’ll get the best results when you come in with an idea, a concept, in mind.
“I want to smell like worn, old, musty jewelry that’s probably tangled.” There’s a scent for that.
“Do you have anything that smells like a day at the fair as a kid?” Yes, there is.
“How about a warm rock?” Second display case in the unisex section, fifth shelf down, third bottle from the left, the green one.
There’s also the option to get a custom-made fragrance, although it’ll carry a heftier price tag than the already-pricy wares. But for many, it’s a small price to pay for something that’s uniquely personal to them.
All of this has led to celebrities, politicians, and other rich and famous people from across the galaxy to flock to this store, which has been the biggest reason for the store’s meteoric rise to fame. It started off as the name being shared among circles and it gradually rippled out from there until it reached the level of renown it has today. Celebrities often quote a bottle from the store as their signature and/or favorite scent in interviews and the paparazzi always snap a bunch of photos whenever a particularly high-profile person leaves the store with a bag in hand.
Rumor has it that the advertising benefits for the shop are top-tier too, which is why they practically jump at the chance to promote the newest scents.
But while the shop’s fame is undeniable, there isn’t much known about the owner. They’ve dodged the media’s questions ever since the shop’s popularity exploded and even the two assistants don’t know much besides what’s publicly available. It seems as if they intend for things to stay that way as well.
Not only do you want to keep your secrets close, but you also want to preserve that sense of monotony that comes with running a business for as long you have. Wake up, get ready, open the store for business, and handle the various customers that come into the shop until closing.
But unbeknownst to you, there’s a wave of new customers coming, each with their peculiarities that you’ve never quite had to deal with before, and they’re interested in more than just your wares.
Keeping your inventory stocked and your heart guarded is your modus operandi for running your business. But between running your business, staying on top of orders, and dealing with these new customers… this may be a difficult task to follow for the foreseeable future.

Do you think drawing fat people is hard?
It’s a bit different from drawing slimmer people, especially when most references and art assets mainly showcase slimmer folks. Plus-sized characters in media are far and few in between, and they often just have a little more curve with a slim face. There's nothing wrong with that, but everyone has different weight distributions, which can lead to a lot of diversity in body types!
I don't think drawing fat people is “hard”, but it can take a little longer to seek out references for the anatomy. There are some good resources online but one I've found super helpful is FAT PHOTO REFERENCE, you need approval to access it but once you're in there are so many amazing photos of bigger people posing!
AdorkaStock (also known as Senshi Stock) have a great body diversity for art references, and a rich library of different poses!
In general, I decide what body shape I want to go for and add some mass to it based on my reference; I based a lot of my character designs on shapes, so that decided the weight distributions. Good to remember about weight is that it weighs (lol), so instead of just adding rounder shapes to characters, make sure it's also pulling down a little.
Double chins are very common but rarely showcased, so I think it's a good feature to add if you want to draw a bigger person.
I’m not sure if any of this is helpful, or if the question was meant to offer advice or just to critique my character designs (which is fair). As an artist, I've noticed that “flaws”—and I mean more than just weight, as someone who has struggled with my own size—make for more engaging character designs.
Adding my own insecurities to character designs helps me accept and embrace the uniqueness of features that aren't often seen; everyone deserves to be seen, because we’re all here, and life’s too short to strive for a picture-perfect existence.
#idk if you were trying to shade me here but#yeah fair i mainly draw the same characters that I hc to be more fit or slimmer.#that's fair#i like that the tmaoc have some more diversity in them I always get a little happy when the fat option wins#character deisgn#artist advice#art advice

could I please get "heart shaped sunglasses" as a prompt? I love canon but if there's an AU that speaks to you I'd love that too
I went with a photographer/model AU.
—
Alex didn’t grow up thinking he wanted to be a photographer.
He cycled through dreams that almost every kid has—doctor, teacher, President of the United States, and astronaut. For a few weeks, when he was four, he thought seriously about becoming a T-rex.
When he was thirteen, he found an old camera in the attic that his father had left behind when he moved out.
He watched a half-dozen YouTube videos to figure out how to get it to work, then took a photography class in high school and got a position on the school paper, taking shots of football games and events around town.
He thought he looked cool, carrying around a vintage camera that used real film in the age of sleek digital devices and camera phones, and he was good at it. He received heaps of praise from his photography teacher, won awards in local contests, and even sold a few prints at farmer’s markets and craft fairs around Austin.
Alex majored in studio art in college, focusing on photography and media. He learned about color, composition, and lighting. He studied Ansel Adams, Dorthea Lange, Steve McCurry, and Robert Capa. He thought about becoming a war correspondent, embedding himself in the most volatile parts of the globe and reporting the truth through photographs—gritty, raw, and dangerous.
Where he ended up was someplace much softer.
–
Alex first saw Henry Fox on the glossy pages of one of June’s fashion magazines when he was twelve.
Vogue or Harper’s Bazaar. Maybe Cosmopolitan. He can’t remember. What he can remember is Henry Fox’s wide, blue eyes and golden hair. He remembers looking at the close-up photo of him for too long until June cleared her throat and met his startled gaze with raised brows.
He looked for Henry after that. Sneaking into June’s room or stealing the magazine straight from the mailbox when it was delivered. He’d bring it with him to the treehouse in the backyard and search.
Before Alex even had a word for it, most of the photos had felt exploitative. Henry, too young, around much older models. Odd poses and barely there clothing. Henry never looked happy. He never smiled. Alex would never photograph him like that. He never really thought about photographing him at all. Mostly, he just wanted to hang out with him. Maybe take him swimming at Barton Springs, to a baseball game in Round Rock, or ride their bikes together. He just wanted to make Henry smile.
Alex found out later that Henry’s father was a famous actor and his mother was a supermodel, making Henry one of the world’s biggest nepo-babies.
Maybe doors automatically opened for Henry. Maybe he has a trust fund or an inheritance and never has to work another day in his life. Alex is unsure of those things, but he is certain Henry is the most beautiful thing he has ever seen.
–
Alex lowers his camera as the art director flutters into the frame, tugging on the strap of Emily’s bikini top and sweeping Henry’s hair off his forehead.
“Perfect,” she says before waving in Alex’s direction. “Okay. Keep going.”
Alex rolls his eyes and lines up another shot.
He doesn't really know what the point of this shoot is. He guesses it’s supposed to be playful…a fun day by the pool where Henry has stolen her heart-shaped sunglasses and perched them on the top of his head while she’s taken his diamond-studded watch and is holding it against her throat like a necklace. But Emily’s bikini is practically see-through, Henry is wearing a pair of swim trunks that hide nothing, and Alex doesn’t understand what they’re trying to sell, aside from their bodies.
So goes the fashion industry.
“Did you get it?” Henry calls out to him without moving a muscle.
Alex blinks through the viewfinder. “What?”
“Did you get the shot?” He asks.
“Oh. Yeah. Probably.”
“Good,” Henry says, “my foot is beginning to cramp.”
He shifts, and Emily hops off his lap and into a robe a PA is holding while Henry stands up, stretches the arch of his foot, and accepts his own robe.
It’s all so fast and formal as if they didn’t just spend the last hour dry-humping each other by a pool at a mansion in Beverly Hills.
Alex isn’t sure if he could pull that off, being that close to either of them and acting like it’s no big deal. Things are easier behind the lens of a camera.
Alex busies himself by pulling the photos up on his laptop. He took nearly two hundred. At least one has to be good enough to go to print.
“May I see?”
Alex nods, and Henry steps into his space, pressing their shoulders together before Alex can make room.
“Christ,” Henry says as he peers at the screen. “Am I really that pale?”
“We can fix it in post?”
Henry hums. “Add it to the list,” he jokes, but it’s not funny at all.
Alex knows that no one is perfect, but he thinks the people he photographs—Henry especially—are about as close to the idea of it as possible. That won’t stop every photo he’s in from being scrutinized and edited to death. They’ll airbrush out the moles that dot across his ribs, the small half-moon scar by his left hip, and the line between his brows. Whatever they do to Henry, it’ll be ten times worse for Emily.
“You’re very good at this,” Henry tells him. It’s not the first time they’ve worked together, but it’s the first time Henry has complimented him.
“Thanks. You make it easy. I mean you guys—you two—you and Emily,” Alex flounders. “You look good.”
“Is it the sunglasses?” Henry asks as he reaches up and touches the thin, pink frames.
“Yes,” Alex answers. “They complete the look. Maybe they’ll let you keep them since they suit you so well.”
“I’ll be sure to ask,” Henry says, the barest hint of a smile on his face.
—
Unsurprisingly, it was June that helped him shape his view of fashion.
When he was younger, he’d point to the avant-garde looks in her magazines and genuinely ask who the hell would ever wear this?
“No one,” She’d tell him as she snatched the magazine away. “Sometimes clothes aren’t meant to be worn, they’re meant to be admired. It’s like how some people go to the Louvre to see the Mona Lisa. Other people find their art in fashion magazines.”
He reminds himself of that each time he attends Fashion Week in London, Milan, or Paris. It’s an art exhibit; the models are living sculptures.
In the front row of the Dior show at Bryant Park, Alex thinks Henry makes a stunning canvas.
His hair is dyed dark brown, a near match to the cropped leather jacket he’s wearing, only half zipped, his chest bare. Alex watches his long legs in oversized wool shorts as they walk down the runway, where he stops at the end, poses, and then continues back. He looks down at Alex as he passes, tips his head up, and disappears backstage.
Only after he’s gone does Alex realize he didn’t get a single photo of him.
–
They let me keep the glasses, by the way.
Alex frowns down at his phone as he tries to parse out the Instagram DM that popped up on the screen.
He has two accounts—an official photography account and a smaller, more personal one, followed only by his family and friends. Alex knows he isn’t famous, not yet anyway, but he knows that people can get weirdly parasocial, and he’d rather not have to purge his main account a few years down the line.
This message, from a GEJames97, was sent to his personal account.
????? Alex sends back.
The ones from the shoot, the next message reads.
This is Henry.
Fox.
Alex’s frown deepens. Henry has an Instagram account. He has nearly four million followers and posts photos of his most recent campaigns at least twice a week. Not that Alex is keeping track.
Prove it, Alex says.
A few moments later, a photo of Henry Fox in the pink, heart-shaped glasses pops up.
Pez told me about this account. I hope that’s okay.
Pez…..???????
Percy Okonjo.
Percy Okonjo is an up-and-coming designer who is best friends with Henry. They have the entire fashion world buzzing with speculation that Henry will start working with Percy the second his contract with Dior ends.
Percy also was a guest editor for Vogue and had an undefined thing with June. Alex doesn’t know the details, and he’ll never ask for them, but it was enough that Percy followed Alex’s personal account.
How long are you in New York? Henry asks, and Alex feels his heart rate kick up.
Why do you think I’m still in New York?
Henry sends him a photo Alex posted earlier of a friendly Central Park squirrel eating a small piece of bagel out of his hand.
Until Sunday, Alex tells him. Why?
Doing anything tonight?
Alex blows out a breath.
Not yet.
Alex has only been at the bar for three minutes before Henry shows up. Alex appreciates the promptness, it gives him less time to be nervous.
“I’m sorry I’m late,” Henry says anyway, leaning in to press a kiss to Alex’s cheek that leaves Alex feeling untethered. “Traffic in Manhattan is insane.”
“It’s fine,” Alex says, “you’re good. You’re…” Alex trails off because Henry is beautiful in jeans, a t-shirt (that probably cost more than Alex’s hotel room bill), and a Yankees cap pulled low over his face.
“If you want to go someplace else–,” Alex starts.
“Why would I want to go someplace else?” Henry interrupts, raising his hand to wave down the bartender.
“I don’t know. I feel like this place isn’t your usual vibe.”
It’s not a dive by any means, but it’s certainly not the flashy restaurants and clubs Henry usually attends.
“A few months ago, Pez brought me to this place in Chinatown. We followed this woman down a narrow stairwell for what felt like forever, light flickering and water dripping from the ceiling. I would’ve phoned my sister to say goodbye, but I didn’t have cell service. If I can survive that, I can survive this.” He glances around the bar. “I don’t fear for my life at all here.”
“You’re in America,” Alex tells him. “You should kinda always be fearing for your life.”
Henry snorts. “I suppose that’s true, but I am enjoying myself.”
“You just got here.”
Henry shrugs. “Then maybe it’s the company.”
Alex ducks his head. “How long are you in the city for?”
“At least another two weeks,” Henry tells him. “I’ll have a good bit of downtime, but not enough to fly home between shoots. I’m trying to figure out ways to keep myself busy. Do you have any ideas?”
Alex has about a million. He’s been thinking about this since he was twelve years old.
“Have you ever actually been to a Yankees game?” Alex asks, and Henry shakes his head. “They’re in town if you wanna go.”
Henry smiles, big and bright, even in the murky lighting of the bar, and Alex feels like he’s suddenly accomplished everything he could ever want in life.

MANIFESTING 2025 Memories
Because we were absolutely FERAL and manifested smex cards, I'm gonna put my ideas for cards/banners/events out there for the Infold team - who I think we can all agree, browse social media and see our collective mental breakdown on the regular.
Some kind of astronomy banner/event with a nod to astrology. They have the boys zodiac signs listed, they know the astrology girlies would eat it UP. Maybe an event exploring a planetarium and there's a booth for a zodiac analysis with special dialogue to associate with your zodiac sign & his. I want to witness Zayne being told how much of a Virgo he is while also being reminded I am also very much a Virgo. Thanks.
Summer beach event with SWIMWEAR for both the boys & MC. I know they probably won't want to give us MC in a swimwear (for many reasons), but imagine the possibilities (full coverage bikini, tankini, dress or skirt coverup, rash guard, etc) which we could buy in the chocolate shop. And then do cute lil beach photo shoots...
Speaking of chocolate shop - PUT MORE OUTFITS IN THERE CAUSE DAMN... I know there must be people drowning in chocolate if you've got everything already. Also, we grind for it for a reason, give us more thingies please & thank you.
And speaking of outfits... if we see that red shirt show up in one more memory... Listen, personally I like the outfit, the choker is cute and it suits MC, but FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY GIVE US MORE! The boys get hot fits on the regular with events, let MC have MORE!
Oh and circling back to grinding tehe can Abyssal Chaos be reset when Caleb comes home? It would be really cool and stuff... There's only so much we can do and I KNOW WE HATE TOBIAS BUT, to be so real, I think we would all deal with him if it meant free resources.
HEAR ME OUT - a spring Renaissance Fair. I can't get the image of Sylus in armor doing a jousting contest out of my head (fanfic incoming?!) and MC in a cute lil medieval hunters outfit. Give us that time travel shit again and I will give all my money. Rafayel critiquing medieval art, Zayne conflicted about using modern medicine & OOH Xavier accidentally getting drunk on strong af mead HELLO?
MC won a bet, the boys have to do something - I've seen some fanfics, I KNOW okay. Put Rafayel in a maid outfit and Infold, you will have enough money to support yourself through 5.0!
Similar to the bet concept, a prank war. Each boy would prank MC so differently so it would be a really funny group event. Like Rafayel would not hold back, he would probably end up making MC mad. Xavier would be super silly with it, old school pranks and MC would be trying to do more modern pranks. Zayne would be hesitant to prank her, but would, only because she pranks him first. And I SWEAR Sylus wouldn't pull a single prank, but the ANTICIPATION would be MCs undoing.
Since we didn't get a Halloween event, might I suggest a Friday the 13th event? First Friday the 13th is in June and methinks that is the perfect time for something SPOOKY. Monster boys. That's all I gotta say. Make em classic horror monsters - WE KNOW YOU CAN YOU MADE THEM CATS FFS - and I will slam my credit card on the table.
Specific to the Boys:
Sylus: - I wanna be on his bike again. Please, I beg, biketok is going away and this is all I'll have (dramatic). Take me on that "joyride" baby! - I want angst. I want MC to come face to face with the consequences of being so close to Sylus. Either the Association coming down on her for her associating with him OR Sylus's enemies making a HUGE MISTAKE and coming after her to get to him. - More big dick gang leader Sylus. Show me his brutal side, WE LOVE IT AND NEED TO BE REMINDED OKAY?!
Rafayel: - MC models for him. Maybe for his birthday event? His "gift" is us modeling for a painting and it turns spicy. The multitude of fanfics speak volumes to how well this would go over. - Please PLEASE give us Rafayel with a tail. Just spend the money, render that beautiful bitch and give us an H20 "oh no I got wet, ahhh my tail" moment. I beg.
Xavier: - COOKING CLASSES. I feel like it was hinted at in the prologue for the Love Tour event, but I would love to see them in a class together. Just domestic cuteness. - ANGST ON HO HO NO... Can we have an actual Sleeping Beauty moment? Xavier falls into a deep sleep thanks to a Wanderer and MC can't wake him up. Then you go all Inception on us and MC enters his dreams to wake him up. You could feed us so much lore disguised as "just a dream" or even have MC discover some truths about his past.
Zayne: - Exchange program. MC gets to experience the other side. She works with the combat medics to gain more knowledge which will help her on the field. Maybe another "hands on training" moment withe Zayne (I MISSED THAT CARD, IT'S ONLY FAIR INFOLD). - ANGST PLEASE - MC has to have surgery after a mission. Maybe it is minor, or maybe make it major and have us cry. And Zayne has to walk his fellow doctors through the procedure because his hands are shaking so badly at the thought of losing the love of his life. (crying) - Two words. Library make-out. I will give you two more. Library smex. Give our nerdy girls the fantasy, TRUST.
For Caleb, I do hope his first card is really sweet or insanely heavy. Make a statement cause people either love him or hate him and those undecided will make up their minds with that card. He didn't get blown up for nothing, give the boy a chance.
Comment below what you'd like to see Love & Deepspace do for events or add to the game! We manifest together.

[CN] Kiro's Peach Blossoms Date (Part 1)
🌸 Warning: This post contains detailed spoilers for a date that hasn't been released on the EN server yet! 🌸
[Note: This translation was done with the help of Google Translate :>]
——*:・゚✧——*:・゚✧——
[PART 1]
Everything is quiet. Dewdrops fall on the eaves of the ancient building, and gusts of wind enter from outside the window.
Kiro is dressed in a blue shirt, gripping a red-tassled spear, lunging and sweeping across the cluster of budding peach blossoms.
The red and blue complement each other, sketching a colorful ink painting of waves chasing the sun. I reluctantly look away and lean back on the couch to edit the Weibo post.
"Isn't Kiro's acting skills the ceiling? The entertainment industry is his domain!"
"If you don’t believe me, you can watch every one of his works and you will know what drama is synonymous with."
Looking at the nine carefully selected photos of Kiro in period costume dramas from different eras, I hum with pride.
Knock knock——Suddenly, there is a light sound of knocking beside my ear, accompanied by a lazy chuckle.
Kiro: Lady Miss Chips, I thought you woke up so early to practice martial arts with me, but you've just been holding that "big brick" in your hands the entire morning.
I look up towards the sound and see him sitting casually by the window, so I pout and show him the screen of my cell phone.
MC: You were wronged. All I'm doing is upholding justice~
MC: There is no end to those unscrupulous marketing accounts. It's easy to guess which media companies are responsible.
MC: They don't have the talent to get the leading role... So they attack you for having too three-dimensional features and too deep eyes to be suitable for acting in period dramas?
MC: Hmph, when you, the young Sun Ce, became famous overnight, I wonder what they were doing.
Last night, Kiro's oriental epic masterpiece co-written by a famous director was previewed for the first time on the Internet. News of its investment of hundreds of millions has aroused widespread attention and expectations.
However, there were quite a few unpleasant comments mixed in, and as a producer, I could tell who the troublesome capitalists were.
Kiro: Don't be angry. Aren't you used to this kind of thing?
Kiro: Besides, Savin has already solved the problem, so we can just stay in Ruyi Town for the holidays and enjoy a peaceful life without being disturbed by anyone a while.
Kiro smiles and climbs over the windowsill to sit down. I fall into his arms and pout unhappily.
MC: I know, but I'm just mad...
MC: Especially when I saw those slanderous articles, I couldn't sit still, so—
Kiro: So you immediately contacted the lawyer of Loveland Films to assist Savin, and then logged onto social media to seek justice for me?
I blink blankly.
MC: How do you know all that?
Kiro: Well, because...
He hesitates as he stretches out his fingertips and traces my face like a painting.
Kiro: It says here "Damn it, I'm going to report all those who speak bad about Kiro!"
Kiro: And here is, "It could have been a perfect vacation, but now it's ruined by them, woooo..."
Kiro: There's also your slightly wrinkled eyebrows and the flaring tip of your nose....
The place where his fingertips rub feels ticklish, and I'm unable to stop myself from laughing.
He unsuspectingly takes my cell phone away and hugs me tighter.
Kiro: So I'm going to interrupt your thoughts now and not let them take up our time.
Kiro: See, you missed how cool I looked during my shooting practice just now...
Seeing him grumble in mock anguish, the slight annoyance in my heart seems to unknowingly dissipate.
MC: Seems like the gains don't outweigh the losses when you say that... Then I don't want to miss your next move~
MC: What are we going to do later?
Kiro: Let me think... There is a temple fair in town today, why don't we go and join in the fun?
MC: Okay, but don't you want to take a break? You were studying the script until midnight last night.
Kiro: Nah, I'm not the least bit sleepy. Let's go, change clothes and go out~
He pulls me to the wardrobe, and I see several sets of clothes prepared by the organizers. Unable to make up my mind for a moment, I steal a glance at Kiro's selection.
Unexpectedly, his eyes rest thoughtfully on the two bright red wedding outfits. I can't help but poke his arm in a teasing manner.
MC: Ahem, the "One Hundred Marriages" event is only three days away... Could it be that a certain someone can't even wait that long?
Kiro: ...A bit. If possible, I'd like to see you in your wedding dress today.
Seeing his frank admission, I feel a bit overwhelmed.
MC: As - as if you haven't seen me in one before!
Kiro: it's because I've seen you in one before, that I'm looking forward to it even more.
Kiro: Looking forward to you wearing it, smiling at me and calling my name.
There is a hint of tenderness in his mirthful gaze, and he reaches out and gently smooths out a wrinkle in his wedding outfit.
Kiro: But if we got married today, you'd definitely be in a rush because you won't have enough time to prepare.
Kiro: And… the weather today isn't the most perfect either.
As he speaks, he looks out the window at the peach orchard and begins to gesture with his arms outstretched.
Kiro: The day I marry you, the weather must be clear and sunny.
Kiro: These peach blossoms have to be in full bloom as well. They'll join me in marrying the most beautiful you.
I look over and see the flower buds hanging on the branches tremble slightly, which softens my heart as well.
MC: Weren’t these peach trees just planted? Will they bloom so soon?
He turns around and smiles firmly.
Kiro: Of course, the most indispensable thing between us are miracles, right?
Kiro: So I'm pretty sure. On that day, not only miracles, but all the good things in the world will come to greet us.
——*:・゚✧——*:・゚✧——
[PART 2]
After changing clothes, we leave the courtyard and come to the temple fair area.
The street is crowded with people. Seeing me look around nervously as we walk, Kiro squeezes my palm as if to comfort me.
Kiro: Don't worry, today I used the new contouring technique my makeup artist taught me, so no one will notice.
MC: But in my eyes you don't look all that different...
I turn my head and took a closer look. He is wearing a red and blue robe today, with a ribbon hanging down around his bun.
Although his hairstyle has changed a lot, his face still looks like Kiro's...
Kiro: That's because you're someone who knows me best.
He smiles and takes my fingertips, gently running them along the space between his eyebrows... the bridge of his nose...
Kiro: You see, there is more white space on my face, and my facial features have gotten softer. It's less likely to attract attention.
He points out the modified spots one by one, but I just blink in confusion.
Kiro: Still don’t see the difference?
MC: Hm...
He chuckles, and his mood seems to improve.
Kiro: Never mind. If someone recognizes me, just take me and run away.
MC: Okay. I'll run away and marry you, and no one will be able to find us~
As we joke with each other, the blue bricks and tiles sparkle in the sun, and an ancient fragrance surrounds the area.
MC: Do you get the feeling like we're living in ancient times when walking on such a street?
Kiro: To be honest, I felt that way ever since we arrived in Ruyi Town.
Kiro: It’s like suddenly traveling to paradise and starting a whole new life.
I suddenly think of something and burst out laughing.
MC: Wouldn't we be unemployed? After all, in ancient times, there was no technology and the Internet to allow us to show our talents...
Kiro: That's not necessarily the case. We still have some strengths.
He looks into the distance in contemplation, a smile in his eyes.
Kiro: As a modern day individual... the first thing we need to do when traveling back to ancient times is to make good use of the information gap.
Kiro: That way I can open an unprecedented milk tea shop and make my first pot of gold.
MC: Pfft, you've read way too many novels.
Kiro: I'm serious! When I earn enough money, I'll buy a large carriage and "wander" with you to see all the beautiful rivers and mountains.
He opens his arms to gesture the size of the carriage. Touched, I start indulging in this fantasy along with him.
MC: So what should I do?
Kiro: You'll be making bubble tea with me, of course. I can't handle it alone.
MC: Hahahaha...!
Amidst my laughter, I see a dazzling array of small stalls nearby, and my eyes light up.
MC: I know. I can set up a stall next to the milk tea shop and sell calligraphy, paintings and other small items.
MC: We should focus on both material and spiritual food!
Kiro: Good idea. I can help you write poems and make paintings when I have free time.
MC: Hahaha, no, no, your paintings are abstract, people from back then may not be able to appreciate them.
Kiro: Hmph, seems that I need to put my all into poetry then.
He shrugs indifferently, picks up a folding fan from the calligraphy and painting stall in front of him, and leisurely waves it around.
Note: The next lines that Kiro recite are written in the form of poetry that don't really translate well into English. I've done my best to make the lines as poetic as possible without changing too much of the meaning, but do take with a grain of salt :>
Kiro: With my heart spoken for, and the moon bright; we share this life together, along with its ever brilliant light.
Seeing him do it so effortlessly, makes my eyes widen in surprise.
MC: You don't say. It really does sound like it~
MC: But I don't think I've ever heard of this poem. Is it a less popular work by a famous poet?
The smile on his lips deepens.
Kiro: What the girl doesn't know is that these are not written by a famous poet, but are just a few lines of casual poetry on a fan.
Stunned, I look at the blank folding fan in front of his chest.
MC: I can't see it like this, turn it over and show me.
I reach out to take it, but he closes the fan and holds it high in the air.
Kiro: Oh... don’t worry, there is one more sentence—May the stars reflect in your eyes and sing along with you in your dreams.
Kiro: How is it? Do you like it?
MC: Well, not bad? It seems like it was tailor-made for our "Twinkle"~
MC: Any more?
Kiro: Mm... none for now.
MC: For now? Don’t keep me in suspense, show me now.
I stand on tiptoe to reach it, curious and impatient, but the man nimbly turns around on the spot, picks up the floral ornament from the stall with his fingertips, and pins it into my bun like magic.
Kiro: Would you look at that, we suddenly have a new sentence.
Kiro: Because of you, flowers bloom and fall; The blowing spring breeze fills my heart with joy.
Looking at that familiar smirk, I vaguely realize something and put my hands on my hips in mock irritation.
MC: Wait, this poem can't be the work of someone called Ki...Ro, right?
Kiro: Nope~
He smiles and unfolds the fan. During the pause, I see that both the front and back of the fan are blank.
Kiro: It was written by Mr. Wuhui. It bears the true feelings he expressed when faced with the woman he loves.
MC: Oh, Mr. Wuhui is really a great writer of our time~
MC: But where did you learn all this? Do people in California still teach classical Chinese?
Kiro: I learned most of it myself, and also consulted a couple of Chinese culture teachers along the way.
Kiro: After all, when developing in the country, the more comprehensive the better.
MC: Wow, your professionalism is truly a role model in the industry!
??: Look there, why is someone with blonde hair wearing traditional chinese clothes...?
??: Yeah, but doesn't he look a bit like... Kiro?
Suddenly, a voice sounds from afar, instantly shattering the smile on my face.
I turn my head in shock, and watch people coming and going in front of me.
??: Impossible. He's become a hot topic lately. You think he'd dare to go outside?
??: That's true, but I've also heard some rumors that he was an abandoned illegitimate child... Is it true?
The noisy footsteps blends together with the whispers, making it hard to tell where the source is from. It feels as though everyone on the street has become a suspect.
I feel a chill go through my heart, and then I realize something...
I thought the slanderous articles were just the hype generated by marketing accounts or the manipulations by capitalists...
But perhaps the real "malice" is sometimes such an unintentional act that makes it difficult to guard against.
I clench my palms and secretly observe Kiro, only to find that while paying the stall owner, he half covers his face with the fan and yawns.
Kiro: [yawning] Miss Chips... I think I need a cup of refreshing tea...
Seeing him mumble to himself, totally unaware of the noise that has just passed by, I instantly breathe a sigh of relief.
Luckily he didn't hear...
I clench my slightly stiff fingertips and point to the teahouse ahead.
MC: Why don't we go there and take a break?
Kiro: Also, should we continue our discussion on our ancient entrepreneurial plan?
MC: Sure!
As I take a step forward, a drop of cold air hits the tip of my nose. I look up and find that the sky has suddenly changed, with a few large dark clouds floating in, a sign of heavy rain.
MC: ...It's going to rain.
Kiro: —Oh no, our peach blossoms!
He suddenly thinks of something, grabs my hand, turns around and breaks off into a sprint.
——*:・゚✧——*:・゚✧——
[PART 3]
When I step into the courtyard, the rain pours down heavily and the world grows noisy.
After Kiro drops me off under the eaves, he turns around and rushes into the heavy rain, heading straight for the wooden ladder by the wall.
MC: Kiro!
Kiro: You go in first!
The rain makes his voice intermittent, and it appears as though he is searching for something in the yard.
I hurry back to the house, finding an oil-paper umbrella in the corner. I open it and rush into the rain, only to find that figure already deep in the peach forest.
Kiro sets up a wooden ladder and steps up, then hangs the large bundle of fishing nets in his hand on the top of the tree.
The world is covered in white, and the unopened flower buds sway in the wind and rain. I quickly run to his side and hold the umbrella towards him.
He is entirely soaked through. Even his usually curly hair is soaked by the weight of the rain and sticks to his forehead somewhat messily.
However, those eyes are still bright.
Kiro: Why did you come here?
MC: I'm here to hold the umbrella for you, of course! I wanted to find two raincoats, but all I could find was this...
He is stunned for a moment, looking at me as I almost get soaked, and laughs.
Kiro: Such heavy rain can't be stopped. You should go back quickly...
MC: Who said that? I will block as much as I can. Isn't that why you came back to save the peach blossoms?
I reach out and wipe the rain off his face and laugh.
MC: Plus, I don't want the yard to be bare on my wedding day.
MC: I... also need to take photos and post them on Moments.
His eyes flicker, and he gives me some of the fishing net in his hand.
Kiro: That’s right, happy occasions should be lively and festive.
Kiro: Let's hang it up together, and then find some cloth to cover the net, it'll be safer that way.
MC: Sure! But where did these fishing nets come from?
Kiro: Found it in the yard. Ruyi Town is built facing the lake, so every household has one.
Kiro: Seems like you aren't familiar enough with our residence. I'll have to punish you by asking you to explore it a few more times.
The whole world is dyed in a fog by the heavy rain, but that dazzling color can never be washed away.
-
The crude awning is quickly put up, but even until dark, the world is still submerged in heavy rain, and even time seems to have slowed down.
??: Sorry, due to heavy rain, some of the props for the One Hundred Marriages event were damaged, so the event has been temporarily postponed.
A few drops of rain splash over me. I hang up the phone and sit down side by side with Kiro in front of the window. We both sigh.
MC: Not only can we not go out, but even the most anticipated event has been cancelled....
Finding it a little hard to accept, I look up at the dark sky with a glimmer of hope.
MC: God who controls all weather conditions, please be merciful and make the rain stop.
Listening to me mumble, Kiro beside me starts to chuckle.
Kiro: If you speak so quietly, the gods won't hear you.
MC: But it's late, and shouting loudly might disturb the neighbors nearby.
Kiro: Silly Miss Chips, who said that prayers can only be made with words? We can also bribe them with delicious food.
As he says this, he stands up and runs out of the room. When he comes back, he is holding a bunch of apples, bananas, various candies and potato chips in his arms.
After a short while, he arranges them neatly and sits down with his hands clasped together.
Kiro: Hello everyone, I am Kiro.
Kiro: I was going to marry Miss Miss Chips soon, but this rain has turned me into a wife-waiting statue...
Kiro: Of course, I know that as long as two people love each other, time and weather don't matter.
Kiro: But I still want to welcome the sunny day with her, want the peach blossoms to bloom, and want everything to be just right.
Kiro: That way I can see her smile without any regrets on the wedding day and hear her say "I do".
My heart suddenly softens, and I can't help but follow his lead and put my hands together.
MC: I am the same, I want my beloved Kiro to be the happiest groom in the world.
MC: If you think we are too greedy... just stop the rain first, and we will do the rest ourselves~
Upon my words, he turns his head and widens his eyes.
Kiro: Wait, why are you bargaining with yourself first? Withdraw, withdraw—
Kiro: Oh Gods, please follow my wishes~
Kiro: I know I'm greedy, but for her, I want to try every method.
Amid the deafening rain, his voice grows softer and softer, yet is filled with piety and longing.
I look at him for a long time, overcome with a sense of peace.
It doesn’t matter if the gods can’t hear me; the dark clouds in my heart have already been blown away by him.
-
Without warning, my eyes suddenly open in the middle of the night.
The reflection of the moonlight sways slightly, and I turn over and bury myself into Kiro's arms. After he subconsciously tightens his arms, I close my eyes in satisfaction.
But for some reason, sleep suddenly evades me.
MC: ..........
I listlessly open my eyes, and my gaze unconsciously falls on the person in front of me.
His freshly washed hair is fluffy and soft, a complete contrast to the messy "wet pup" he was in the afternoon.
I can't help but reach out and stroke it, then trace it all the way, letting my fingers wander between the arch of his eyebrows, the bridge of his nose and his lips.
Just as I raise the corners of my lips, a voice suddenly flashes through my mind.
??: How can someone with blonde hair wear traditional chinese clothes...
I frown and shake my head, trying to get rid of the fading episode from my mind.
But for some reason, I can't seem to get rid of it.
It was like a single wooden thorn pierced itself into my skin, existing silently and sinking deeper and deeper.
Once things settle down, that little bit of pain will spread throughout my body with the beating of my heart, attacking me again and again.
It certainly doesn't cause any substantial harm or pain, but it takes root in my mind and I am unable get rid of it.
MC: ..........
I take a deep breath, kiss the person in front of me, and get up from the bed. I take out the laptop Kiro brought, and sit myself at the table.
As expected... I still can't let go of this matter.
I press the power button and create a spreadsheet. I plan to collect evidence and accuse all those rumors and malicious intentions.
The moment I click on the browser search box, the world around me suddenly seems to darken.
On the blank screen in front of me, a long and dense row of historical search records pop up.
"Kiro"; "Kiro's parents"; "Little Sodas"; "Mixed-blood"; "Kiro's acting skills".
MC: .....!
The rain outside the window gets heavier and heavier, pounding against my heart with sorrow.
Turns out that he has always cared... Hiding it all with a smile.
I purse my lips, walk over to him and gently sit down.
The moonlight shines quietly on Kiro, and he sleeps peacefully, as if none of the troubles in the world can get to him.
MC: Why... didn't you tell me?
Obviously there is a "thorn" hidden in your heart that cannot be ignored as well.
I stare at the person in front of me for a long time, and finally, with helplessness and distress, I poke his cheek with my fingertips.
MC: Kiro....
MC: You're such a big idiot.

Chico da Silva (Brazilian, 1910-1985)
A Brazilian artist of Indigenous descent, Francisco da Silva, known as Chico da Silva or simply “Chico”, was painting fantastical universes on the walls of fishermen’s houses in the 1940s when the Swiss art critic Jean-Pierre Chabloz first encountered his visionary work. An émigré from war-torn Europe, Chabloz hailed Chico’s paintings as a pure manifestation of Brazilian visual art, which he believed had been tainted by the influence of European neoclassicism. His outsized influence, however, has left a complicated legacy for Chico’s oeuvre that is only being reckoned with today.
Chabloz spent months seeking a first meeting with Chico before the artist agreed, fearing legal repercussions for his murals. In words that reveal a clearly racial paternalism, Chabloz described Chico as an “authentic Aboriginal with copper skin from the upper Amazon” and a “sympathetic nomadic, gloriously primitive, divinely illiterate and, above all, a wonderful artist who, until then, lacked nothing but a favorable opportunity to reveal his extraordinary gifts”.
Chabloz catapulted Chico to fame in 1952 with an article entitled “A Brazilian Indian reinvents painting” in the French artistic journal Cahiers d’Art, which championed the authentic “naïve” spirit of the self-taught Indigenous artist. He organized exhibitions of Chico’s work in prestigious museums in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paris and in several Swiss cities.
But while Chabloz played an essential role in promoting Chico’s work, he perpetuated the stereotype of the artist as a “noble savage”. Several articles published during Chico’s lifetime by Chabloz and international media underscored his illiteracy and claimed that he had no concept of money. Everyday habits, like his preference for sitting cross-legged on the floor, were exaggerated and exoticized.

Several articles published during Chico’s lifetime by Chabloz and international media underscored his illiteracy and claimed that he had no concept of money. Everyday habits, like his preference for sitting cross-legged on the floor, were exaggerated and exoticized.
Chabloz also imposed Eurocentric ideas of artistic value and authorship on Chico’s practice. Tensions heightened as Chico formed a studio in the 1960s and contracted various assistants, which Chabloz blamed for causing a surfeit of works and diluting his market. In 1969, the Jornal do Brasil reported that one assistant had single-handedly produced several pieces that the artist later signed, and stated that Chico was drinking heavily at the time.
Chabloz severed their relationship in writing that year with the article “The Rise and Fall of Chico da Silva”, published in the magazine O Povo. Chico had been corrupted by fame and his studio production was industrialized, the critic argued, denouncing what he viewed as a regression in Chico’s painting and the saturation of his market.
The artist continued to have moderate success without Chabloz’s support, but he succumbed to alcoholism and mental health problems in the years that followed. He received an honorable mention at the 33rd Venice Biennale in 1966, which briefly reignited his career, but he was no longer a household name when he died in Fortaleza in 1985.
