Scientific Name: Phoradendron leucarpum Common Name(s): American mistletoe, oak mistletoe Family: Santalaceae (sandalwood) Life Cycle: Perennial Leaf Retention: Evergreen Habit: Subshrub USDA L48 Native Status: Native Location: Lucas, Texas Season(s): Fall
This is the species most commonly hung as a Christmas decoration in North America. The classic European mistletoe is Viscum album. Mistletoes are obligate hemiparasitic plants, meaning they cannot develop without a host, and if the host dies, so does the mistletoe. It draws water and minerals from the host plant but can photosynthesize its own organic nutrients. In spite of the common name, oak isn’t the only plant it grows on. The white berries are toxic to humans but birds love them.

Did the man know the video would be broadcast to the world? Did he realize that his interaction in front of the drone’s lens would be seen by an entire nation? Absolutely not. Certainly not. Without a doubt, no.
When the protagonist of Thorns and Carnations threw his weapon at the invincible aircraft, it wasn’t to be admired or to set an example. Bloodied and standing to his last breath, he was challenging his enemy with honor, not seeking to create a heroic image. He wasn’t bound by the fear of defeat or driven to make his final act one of indomitable bravery.
He was simply a true leader, confronting his enemy with nothing but courage. All he wanted was to deny his foe the satisfaction of a victory where brute force triumphs over the sword in the final act. His only goal was to leave his enemy — and his enemy alone — with a look of defiance that would echo in their memory forever.
In that moment, the man didn’t see us. He didn’t care to be seen by us. He saw only his enemy, focused solely on challenging them with his final breath.
But fate had other plans. Fate turned his final stand into an immortal memory, witnessed by the world — a testament to his bravery, heroism, and sacrifice, and to his enemy’s arrogance and incompetence. Free palestine and fuck Israel.

A Kiss Under the Phoradendron Leucarpum
Christmas in February? Yes, yes it is lol. I didn't get to finish it in time during the Holidays. Holidays is always busy for me. Always.
For those who wanted Kota and Fu kissing under the mistletoe, here you go! Well, what's left of said mistletoe. Better late than never XD
------------------------------------------
Story? Fu heard that the parasitic plant called the Phoradendron Leucarpum, commonly known as the "American mistletoe," is used during the Holiday season for smooching, for whatever reason. How a poisonous plant could make someone feel like puckering up under it, baffled him. So, Fu acquired this plant, for research purposes of course, since this will be Fu's ever Christmas and he wanted to experience ALL THE THINGS....and the results were...unexpected.
Fu is still...processing what's going on haha. Kota is rarely a "make the first move" kind of guy, (for reasons) so the cheek kiss caught him off guard! Careful Kota, you may have just unleashed the beast! XDDD
Other random facts about this picture-
When Kota reads or does paperwork, he wears reading glasses. His eyesight is great, but the long hours put strain on his eyes, so this helps ease that. He has worn reading glasses since childhood, thanks to Grandma Bulma.
When Kota is nervous, he is known to sweat... a lot. Unfortunate. XD
I head canon that Fu has heard of Christmas, but he has never celebrated it. He saw no need to before meeting Kota, who is very invested in celebrating these earthling traditions. Fu only knows a little info about it, but Kota is the Christmas Master and knows the ins and outs of this Holiday because Christmas is his favorite!
Kota and Fu are at a cabin in the woods he rented. Kota prefers cold places in the middle of nowhere, compared to the beach hut he rented at the Resort District in Conton. He's a big fan of snow!
Expect another winter piece, though it may take a bit to draw up! :)

got tagged by @nbjadziadax to share the nine books i'm most excited to read this year!
tagging (not sure how many i'm supposed to tag? i'll go with 9 because that seems to be on theme): @mizufae, @feralbags, @paramaline, @gothtito, @axel-mania, @sonastarson, @phoradendron, @holodeckprotocols, and 🫵 you, the person reading this (whether we follow each other or not)!!
my main planned reading project for the year is actually a visual novel, Umineko When They Cry, which i've been working through very slowly in Japanese, so i'm trying not to commit to big reading projects besides that, but here are some books that i do want to read.
i'm gonna talk a bit about all the ones i chose, starting with the one i'm most excited about (i actually already started reading it haha):
行方不明展 by 梨, 大森時生, and 株式会社闇
This is the book for A Missing Exhibition! I bought a copy of it in print, and I really like the overall design of it (the pages of the book gradually go from white to black, which is a very neat effect, and the cover is partially transparent and the kanji in the title have missing pieces that are completed by the paper cover underneath). I much prefer to read Japanese books digitally, but I did want to own this one in print because I thought it would be a better experience with all the images (plus I wanted to get a signed copy), and it was definitely the right call.
This is more or less a book adaptation of the exhibition! It reminds me of books you'd see for like "normal" art exhibitions, which are primarily made up of photos of the art along with captions (presumably the original exhibit text).
Obviously I did not get a chance to go to the actual exhibition when it was up in Japan, so despite being a fan of the project as a whole, I didn't know much of the specific lore for the items being exhibited, though there were a few things I was deeply curious about (such as the gigantic pile of dirt dgjkfhgjk).
Actually, when I received my copy, it had a little slip of paper in there from the publisher, and one end of it was on the page with the pile of dirt exhibit. Must be fate, haha. (The other end of the slip was on the page with the elevator to another world, which I actually know the lore of quite well already and think about it with fondness because it's a major plot point in the 正体不明 film and features heavily in my fic).
I have sort of a strange relationship with this book, because I'm going into it basically already knowing how the worldbuilding works because the 正体不明 film spelled it out directly. But that film wasn't viewed by many people when it was available, and it can't even be watched anymore, so the book is written for an audience who wouldn't know all of that. It kind of feels like knowing the secrets in advance without having to piece together an explanation from the clues, haha.
It's also a unique reading experience, because on the one hand, I'm reading it from the perspective of appreciating the work of the real creators whom I've actually directly interacted with. I had my thoughts conveyed to them as a random overseas gay person for whom their work resonated, and they were above and beyond nice to me, so I have a lot of respect for them for that.
At the same time, I'm reading it from the perspective of a 正体不明 fan and a Kashima/Tsunaka shipper who is enjoying thinking about the exhibition in the context of its fictional creator, haha, so as I read, I'm imagining Kashima spending nine years traveling around Japan and collecting all of these items for his desperate hail mary attempt to bring Tsunaka back.
In some ways, the book/exhibition makes that story have an even greater emotional impact because you can see all these other examples of people who failed to ever reunite with their missing loved ones, often despite going to great lengths to do so, fighting their own failing memories until eventually they can't fight it anymore and they forget completely.
I feel like the book is more sad than scary, though in a way it's almost comforting to me because of the 正体不明 canon. That said, it has some videos linked throughout, and the first one of those that I watched (the one associated with the dirt pile), was pretty spooky, like more than I was expecting, since the creators kept downplaying the horror aspects of the exhibition in interviews about it.
I'm considering editing the earlier part of my fic and adding in more descriptions that reference some of the specific exhibit items and some of the things that Kashima surely felt when collecting them. It'd be neat for the fic to convey some of those feelings, too, I think.
None of this will be interesting to 99% of my followers, but this is my blog and I can post about whatever niche things that I want 😤.
強く、気高く、美しく 赤井沙希・自伝 by 赤井 沙希
This is Saki Akai's autobiography! I actually started reading it last year and thought that it would actually be my first finished proper book in Japanese, but then I put it aside for my sudden super ambitious tanka project, and then didn't end up picking it back up... So my goal is to finish it this year instead!
I actually had only barely reached the part of the book where she talked about her wrestling career, so I'm sure there are a lot of interesting things in store for me to read about.
ラブ・バレット by inee
This is a yuri manga that went viral on twitter when fans organized a campaign to save it from cancellation (it's called Love Bullet in English), and I thought it looked really cool, so I was more than happy to help out by buying a copy myself! I don't know much about the plot besides that it's about a cupid, but I've heard it's amazing.
NO. 6 by あさの あつこ
A new friend I met last year really likes this series, and it also fulfills one of the 2025 Natively bingo prompts, which is "title includes a number", so I thought maybe this might be a good year to check it out?
The main thing to me that appeals about this book is I believe technically a spoiler, haha, so I won't say it.
A Dictionary of Advanced Japanese Grammar by Seiichi Makino and Michio Tsutsui
ok hear me out...
So, over on the WaniKani forum, we've had a long-running book club for this grammar dictionary series. In 2023, we read the basic volume, and then in 2024, we read the intermediate one. Finally it is time for the advanced one!
What kind of strange person would participate in a book club for a literal grammar dictionary, you ask?
Well, it's actually more fun than you might expect!! Or at least, I've personally had fun with it because I've been going through my TJPW translations for examples for each of the grammar points. It's a very unique learning experience, haha, but it has been neat.
I'm not sure how many of the advanced grammar points I'll be able to find in transcripts of spoken pro wrestling speech, since many of them are really only used in writing, but I'm determined to see this grammar series through to the end.
Lobizona by Romina Garber
This is a YA urban fantasy book that draws heavily from Argentinian folklore. I picked it up because I discovered it accidentally while I was reading a book in Spanish that takes place in Argentina. I looked up the word "lobizona" when I came across it in that book, and this book came up in the google search, because there is actually no existing feminine counterpart to "lobizón" in Spanish, so the word "lobizona" doesn't have any actual real meaning.
The premise of the book looked interesting (and it seems like it contains LGBTQ characters as well), so I picked up a copy when I saw that it was also available in Spanish, because I thought it'd be good Spanish practice. I started reading it last year, but stalled out on it when I got too busy, and then ended up reading the Natively Spanish book club picks instead of finishing this one.
This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone
This book went super viral on twitter in kind of a funny way, and I followed someone who was friends with one of the authors, so I saw a lot of posts about it and ended up buying a copy.
I don't really know anything else about it, haha. I'll just be along for the ride whenever I do actually read it.
The Essential June Jordan
I decided that I was going to read some of June Jordan's poetry after learning about her lifelong commitment to Palestinian liberation, and how her anti-zionism hamstrung her career and pushed her out of the mainstream literary canon.
I have read a few of her poems that I found published online, but wanted to do a proper deep dive, so I bought this book! I'm hoping I can get around to it this year.
If I Must Die: Poetry and Prose by Refaat Alareer
This is a tough book to read. I've read some of Refaat's work already, including his most famous poem, but I want to read more of his writings.
I bought a copy of this book for my dad, and he's currently reading it, so I'll probably ask him if I can borrow it after he's done.

To @sirshiba Happy holidays! I had fun writing this and I hope I did your version of Scarecrow and Riddler justice!
Scriddler
That Damned Parasite of Joy
Words:750 tw:none
Trying to shake off the nerves, Jonathan reposition his arms on Ed's shoulders.
"I am not thrilled about this."
"For one who gets excited at the thought of fear, I would think you would be enthralled with this. All of these high strung beings, who could easily break from one of silver tongue."
"You know damn well I hate any social gathering. It's even worse you brought me to a Holiday Gala, Edward."
"Oh Please, spare me from your sharp word of anguish til after we leave with the information of our enemies."
Sighing, Johnathan continues to awkwardly sway to the music with Ed leading. How he even got here is ridiculous. All it took was Ed using his confounding words of 'intelligence' to get him in this ill fitting suit. Sneaking in was the easy part, but now getting out seemed impossible without the crowds staring at them trying to leave. Especially when Ed chose to wear a eye catching forest glitter green suit.
Choosing to keep dancing, Jon stares into his partners face. The crystal lights reflecting off Ed's gold frames certainly didn't help the sinking feeling. The harsh coldness of the vast ballroom pulling him close to Edward was even worse. God, Johnathan hated this time of year.
The demand to spend money on the people who are suppose to care about you unconditionally have their unspoken conditions met, the annoyingly colorful ads to buy snotty brats the toy of the year and of course. The worst of the all. The cursed plant he hated every single year. The little bunch of parasite plants hung so high. The thing that cause much pain in school dances. That-
"Would you look at that. Mistletoe. Do you know, it comes from three different parasite families. Notably, the most well-known are Viscum, Phoradendron, and Arceuthobium, all of which are members of the family Santalaceae. And of course, the well known saying from Egland that kissing under it will lead to marriage no matter what. Of course, that's just a saying that morphed from Druids buring bonfires and an old Norse legend."
Feeling the dread, Johnathan looks up and sees the dread parasite. Of course. A witches broom. Fuck, it aint the same thing but who cares. Before his face starts to burn with shame, John tries to shuffle away from the bushel of green leaves and white toxic berries. Feeling Edward stop him, John gulps down the fear threatening to spill out his mouth and look back at him.
"So. We both stuck in this predicament. A socially filled room and eyes are starting to fall on us. Of course, if you don't wish to do anything, You don't have to. I would never make you do anything you truly would hate, I'm not that cruel."
Taking a deep breath, Johnathan takes one look over of Ed. The crooked nose he came to adore, the cow lick in his hair that Ed would always avoid calling it that, the rooster tail in the back of his hair that stuck up and how his face would get frustrated when Jon used such words describe him. Edward may be one damn stubborn bastard, but he was the only one Jon would trust to kiss him.
Sighing with a non existing smile, Jonathan simply rolls his eyes hearing Ed go on about how incredibly kind he is before tapping his shoulder.
"Make it quick then."
"Of course, I wouldn't keep one waiting for such a lovely reward. An honor to be given affection from an intelligent being such as I. And furthermore-"
"Oh for the love of that's all holy."
Johnathan pulls the ginger man into a kiss, feeling the sudden warmth of his body temperature. Feeling the eyes starting to pull towards them, Jonathan pulls away. Before Edward could rant and rave about chivalry and ideals, Johnathan put his hand onto Ed's shoulder.
"You make this terrible season almost tolerable."
As the words hit Edward's keen ears, the classic shit eating grin spread across his face.
"Of course, I'm a wonderful delight to be around. To be blessed with such insight-"
"Don't make me regret saying that out loud."
Feeling content, Edward finally shut up.
For all of 5 seconds when he saw someone eating calamari and goes on a tirade on how elitist it is to enjoy something so gross yet expensive. Oh well, it something to ignore the never ending nerves of dread.

Cool Plant: Phoradendron leucarpum
American mistletoe
In wintertime in most of the USA, if you see what looks like a ball of leaves that haven't fallen off, this plant is probably what you are looking at. It is a parasite that lives on trees and sucks out their nutrients. Fortunately one or two mistletoe will not do any harm to a healthy tree.
American mistletoe is the host plant of the rare great purple hairstreak butterfly—its caterpillars eat only mistletoe!
