7/3/23 - PHOTOSHOP LECTURE

In todays class we looked at different ideas that we could use for our brochures. We were also taught about RGB vs. CMYK. RGB stand for red, green and blue, which is used on screen - pixel based. Whereas CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) is used in printing. These different ink colours overlap with each other to complete a collared image. Image mode (CMYK) ensures that the colouring is as accurate as possible.

Paul showed us a website called ‘Phlearn’, which is a 30 days of photoshop free tutorial series. I think that this website will be very useful for me in the future, as I quite often use the same tools in photoshop, so I am looking forward to trying new techniques and creating new things in photoshop throughout this semester.

Due to having a long break, we had a bit of a recap of the useful features that InDesign has to offer. We had a look at:

The document setup - the sizing and bleed and slug measurements, as well their purpose 

The guides and rulers

Parent pages, how they work and how to use them correctly

Type frames and how to create offset text

I found this very useful, as although I knew most of the information, it was nice to be reminded of this. Last year it took me a while to fix my relationship with the Adobe Suite, and now, although I feel confident when working with it, I’m both excited and slightly anxious to upgrade my knowledge further.

Week 1; Print-Based Publication

This week, we were introduced to the brief and course structure/layout for this semester. For the first six weeks, we will be focusing on designing a printed publication which is a multi-format brochure with 12-16 panels for the type conference "Typografika '24". For the next six weeks, we will be focusing on kinetic type. Our class exercise this week was to create a mock-up folded publication, experimenting with different ways to interact and fold our template. I have created a draft of a concertina-type format, where my publication will be folded and opened in a zig-zag form. I enjoy this folding style the most as I feel it creates a sense of flow in my design publication, rather than an 'open and close' book format.

Design and layout a double-sided 380x540mm folding publication/brochure with 12-16 panels, using relevant publishing software (Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop).

InDesign Tutorial Overview 

During this weeks tutorial, we were given the default measurements, bleed, facing pages, margins and grids for this assignment, using Essentials Classic as the default workspace layout. During this tutorial I had learnt how to create parent/children pages on Adobe InDesign. This tool is specifically useful for setting up grids and margins on every page, rather than setting up default measurements on each page specifically. By setting up parent/children pages, you save time setting up the default layout of your pages. Everything set on the 'parent' page, would be placed onto it's 'children' pages. I have also learnt how use the relevant grids, guides and rulers on InDesign, and how to link different text frames together.
