Last night I revisited John Greaves and Peter Blegvad’s magnificent 1977 album, Kew Rhone, for the first time in years. It’s still as beguiling as ever.
For me the highlight is the title track. The lyrics in the first half are comprised of words using only the letters of KEW RHONE (“when we knew no woe, when we were her hero” etc), while the second half is based around a long palindrome: “Peel’s foe, not a set animal, laminates a tone of sleep.”
Of course, I wouldn’t care much about all that if the music wasn’t also totally gorgeous.

Slapp Happy, Slapp Happy (1974)
When experimental musicians go pop, the results can be (and often are) excruciating; uppity show-offs purposefully, snobbily misunderstanding what it means to be ‘accessible’. Not Slapp Happy, though. Founded by big-brained experimentalist Anthony Moore and including instrumentalist Peter Blegvad and singer Dagmar Krause, the group scorned high-brow hijinks for luscious, gently adventurous pop. On two albums (rearrangements of the same songs, with the same names, and the group’s only releases definitively separate from their years with Henry Cow), the first set of tunes are first lightweight and dreamy, of the sort I’d call derivative of Kate Bush if only they hadn’t arrived a decade earlier. The second Slapp Happy or Slapp Happy is supposedly more rockish, though I’ll have to follow-up on that – I can’t currently seem to source a copy by legal or near-legal means.
Pick(s): ‘The Secret’

Tuesdays 2pm - 5pm EST Rules Free Radio With Steve Caplan bombshellradio.com This week's Rules Free Radio with Steve Caplan is a One-year Flashback Encore to October 2023. At the top of the second hour, we’ll do a tribute to the late Power Pop singer-songwriter, Dwight Twilley. He passed away on October 18th. Although he didn’t attain the popularity of a lot of other Power Pop artists, his music was generally praised by critics, and appreciated by other musicians, and he’s a top-tier artist for most serious Power Pop fans. In the third hour, we’ll pay tribute to Carla Bley. She was a composer and performer with a career spanning over 50 years. She was an important figure in the Free Jazz movement in the 1960s, and a stalwart artist for the ECM record label. She collaborated across genres from Jazz to Rock. We’ll hear a little sample of her diverse work. We'll hear some new releases including The Bablers, Rob Suraci, a new single from Star Collector, Metric, John Scofield, Squirrel Flower, and others. Plus music from Jimi Hendrix, Lenny Kravitz, Paul Pena, Matthew Sweet, Rory Gallagher, Robin Trower, John Lee Hooker, and More. anemone by Dave Binyon Via Flickr: Please : Right Click and select "Open link in new tab" www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ols6lnkHrgM How beautiful you are - Peter Blegvad Anemone – a Spring show medicine, poison, pollen and melodrama Courageous of bloom, anemone often endures wind and freezing temperatures of the early spring Many are simply poisonous, and most possess toxicity in large doses. The Metamorphoses of Ovid tells that the plant was created by the goddess Venus when she sprinkled nectar on the blood of her dead lover Adonis. Another story involves the nymph Anemone, beloved of Zephyr, who was transformed into a flower by the jealous Flora. Zephyr was the gentle wind of the west, father of the spring wildflowers, and aptly involved with the likes of anemone.

An incredibly impenetrable print ad for Peter Blegvad's Knights Like This. It's like if Walter Wick put out an I Spy: Art Rock Picture Riddles children's book.
Now there are many reasons why this record didn't sell, but the Virgin art dept coming up with such a cluttered visual approach certainly didn't help them shift any more units.
