"I believe in Father Christmas" - Greg Lake
1975 Music: Greg Lake; lyric: Pete Sinfield
An entry in Let's Do It, my personal favourite singles from 1954-76.
Growing out of a "Christmassy" chord sequence, and interpolating bits of Prokofiev, Lake and Sinfield wrote a thoughtful, honest song.
Sinfield wrote from his experiences, the time when he was eight years old, came downstairs to see a decked tree, and figured that it was all a bit of a swizz.

Christmas is all about lying to the children, painting it as a season of unrestrained joy, peace and goodwill abundant. The song subverts that traditional message, by leaning into the picture postcard until it creases.
"I believe in Father Christmas" isn't an anti-religious song. No, it's a humanist song. Humanity may be able to build a better world, but nobody's going to do it for us. We must build that better world ourselves.
