Homeshake is probably our favorite kind of “shake”. It’s better than any cloying milkshake, that’s for sure. Montreal’s Pete Sagar, who used to be a member of Mac DeMarco, just announced his project’s new album Helium, out February 15th via Sinderlyn, and he’s shared a gooey, slinky, and buttery first track named Like Mariah. Drizzled in a light mist, Like Mariah is intimate yet dispersed, a dreamy intoxicating slice of Homeshake’s trademark sound, a blend of warped, wonky R&B, whimsical funk, and sticky, gauzy indietronica. Homeshake’s EU and UK tour begins in February. Pre-order Helium, a very apt title for Homeshake’s floaty, airy music, here.

Under the Weather, Homeshake (2021)
Tumblr media
The greatest obstacle to reviewing Homeshake (Pete Sagar) albums is actually trying to remember them. Sure, Sagar has crafted a few lo-fi, subdued indie pop anthems, but his records as a whole have never managed to impress beyond individual cuts. Under the Weather is the same, with no noticeable differences between it and Sagar’s previous few. Plodding squelches, spacy synths, distant vocals – by now, it’s all a little dull.
Pick: ‘I Know I Know I Know’

Last night, I had the opportunity to share the story of the Ganges River with the amazing community here at @proctoracademy. It's a tough story to tell, not so much because of its vast intricacy, detail, and complexity, but more because of its seeming hopelessness. As @pedromcbribe, @davidcmorton, and I made our way source to sea in 2013, and later as Pete and I put the film together, we were constanttly faced with the bleakness of the subject. As the Ganges weaves its way some 1,600 miles from the Gangotri to Ganga Sagar, it's assaulted at every turn: she receives an estimated 1 billion liters of untreated, raw sewage per day...a drop in the bucket compared to the unknown quantities of heavy metals, toxic chemicals, and other industrial effluents discharged into the river daily. Ma Ganga is dammed and diverted, harnessed and harassed from her very start to the point where she kisses the sea at the Bay of Bengal, her banks tattered, unique species like the susu - or Ganges River Dolphin - and the golden mahseer are threatened with extinction, and receding glaciers and a rapidly changing climate are constant threats to the river's very existence. But, despite all that, within the complex weft and warp of the Ganges story, there is hope. It lies in the passions of environmental crusaders like Sunita Narain, who work to figure out Indian-specific solutions to Indian water problems, rather than square-peg-round-holing foreign solutions to fit. Hope lies in the faithful dedication of religious leaders like @pujyaswamiji at @parmarthniketan who, through @gangaaction, are bringing the Hindu community to action on issues facing India's rivers. And, it lies in heroic moves like that taken 3 weeks ago by the Indian state of Uttarakhand in granting human status to both the Yamuna and Ganges Rivers. But, mostly, my hope lies in the hearts of people like this man, Raj, a humble boat pilot who took us to the sacred confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati Rivers at Allahabad (Prayag). Raj is not a pundit or politician; he's but a simple man with a dependence on, and passion and reverence for, the Ganges. [continued below] http://bit.ly/2o9ogS8

Montreal’s Pete Sagar, better known to the music world as Homeshake, continues to shake and stir our hearts with Another Thing, his latest track from forthcoming album Helium, out February 15th via Sinderlyn. Helium couldn’t be a better name for an album from the artist, whose music always seems distended with a weightlessness one would associate with that lighter gas. He serves up an infectious synthpop offering sprinkled with tinkling synths and his feathery vocals on the reverie inducing, ear tickling gem. There’s a crispness to its glossy smooth mist that contrasts with some of the wooziness of our past favorites from Homeshake. In fact, there’s an R&B silkiness that made me think of Tom Krell from How To Dress Well and Shy Girls, surrounded by spacey synths and a coy fleeciness. Homeshake takes Helium on the road next month when he headlines shows in Europe. Pre-order Helium, here.

I can assure you, not “every single thing” out there comes even close to as sublimely inebriating and wonky intoxicating as Homeshake’s latest song. Montreal based ex-Mac DeMarco member Pete Sagar is certainly continues making an indelible impression with his project. Buttery and slinky Every Single Thing melds R&B, indietronica, and funk into a How To Dress Well meets Glass Animals gloppy goo. I just want to slather myself with the burbling gem, a taste from Homeshake’s third full length Fresh Air, due out February 3rd via Sinderlyn. Pre-order digitally, here, or physically, here.

In the meantime, he floats us into the clouds with honeyed intoxicating, gooey melting bedroom pop. Homeshake’s new album Fresh Air will arrive on February 3rd. You can pre-order, here.
