Last song you listened to: Maybe Tomorrow by the Stereophonics. I recently rediscovered this song after probably ten years of forgetting. Filled with pathos.

Currently reading: I just finished First Love by Ivan Turgenev. I think I’ll read Crime and Punishment next (Dostoyevsky) or War and Peace (Tolstoy). They’re both sitting by the bed, demanding my attention in equal measure.

Last movie: 200 Cigarettes! I recently dug out a story I wrote back in ‘99, and vaguely recalled I was trying to emulate this film. So I wanted to watch it to see how I did, but it wasn’t on any of the five streaming services I have access to (password sharing ftw) so I’d given up on finding it only to discover yesterday that the whole movie is up on Youtube. Happiest moment of my life! (I did badly, btw, with the emulation. In my defence, I’d just left high school 😆).

Last show: Umm... Band of Brothers a couple weeks back, I guess. Rewatching for the tenth time.

Craving: Coffee, as always :)

What are wearing right now: Pyjamas and a dressing gown because *finally* it’s cold in the mornings. Love autumn.

How tall are you: Just shy of six foot.

Piercings: Just my ears.

Tattoos: I have four. A made-up symbol on my ankle I got when I was 18 - literally the day I was legally allowed to get it 😊 I’d planned it for a year beforehand. The word Bittersweet on my back (’all in life is bitterwseet’ as I wrote in a poem at the time) when I was 23; A series of astrological symbols on my left inner forearm which represent me, my fam, and the people who were closest to me at the time. Got that on my 30th birthday in London. And most recently, at 33, a lucky year for me when a lot of things ended and I took back my power (a long, long journey) I marked it with a tattoo - it’s on the inside of my right arm, a feather quill, and the words, ‘... I meant what I said.’ Love tattoos! Would have so many more if I was rich.

Glasses? Contacts? Glasses. My vision isn’t too bad, just need them for reading. Lil long sighted.

Last thing you ate: I haven’t yet today, it’s still too early. Last night’s dinner was pasta bake with chorizo.

Favourite colour: Green, though I really love any colour that’s bright and clear - I am currently going through a phase of bright purples and pinks.

Current obsession: Two of my OC’s and their relationship development (Arity and Jimmy). Maybe also the temple complex I’m building in Minecraft 😅 I spent all day yesterday working on it and I am thinking I might do the same today.

Any pets: Otto Von Krum the schnauzer (my baby boy); Tiki Taco the chihuahua (Daddy’s girl); and Lady Pablo, aka Tiny Bun, my rescued house rabbit.

Favourite fictional character: Favourite? Like, out of all of them?? I couldn’t possibly choose.

The last place you travelled: Along the south coast of Western Australia, as far as Esperance. My favourite place we stopped, my favourite place in the world I think, is Denmark. It’s a beautiful town in amongst hills, with a wide green river flowing through it, surrounded by forests. It’s a different world. Oh, and it has the best pie-shop in the world too, which doesn’t hurt. [Meat pies, that is. Very Australian 😊]

The section she reviews food on is called, "Yummy Yums". Ironically, despite being a writer, Apple tends to use idioms wrong. On some occasions, she'll visit Berry Bitty City to see her relative and best friends. Apple is a busy body who loves to help her cousin. However, she can get off track and forget things due to her excitable nature. Apple is also resourceful with a knack for fixing machinery. She can create machines to assist her friends or to have fun, but she often doesn't think things through completely. On her various journeys, Apple has vast life experiences. Some of these things include: a grand compression of the story, Cinderella, and winning two-hundred races. Due to this, Apple loves telling stories of her adventures and is considered great at it. Unfortunately, she's constantly losing her pet on her adventures. Finally, Apple's hunt for adventure often clouds her judgement. This is why she never stayed with anybody long until eventually deciding to live in Berry Bitty City.

She graduated from the New York University College of Dentistry in 2011 and completed a general practice residency immediately afterwards. She was the recipient of a 2021 American Dental Association 10 Under 10 Award, which recognizes 10 new dentists from around the country for excelling in their work and inspiring others, as well as a Denobi award in 2022. During my journey in dentistry, one of the phrases I’ve heard ad nauseum refers to work-life balance — this mystical and mythical concept of being able to juggle it all. Much is asked of us in this profession. We are expected to be business owners, practice leaders, team players, role models … and that’s before you add in the personal life component and all that goes along with it. It can seem overwhelming — and it is. I have accidentally overcommitted myself to meetings and Zooms and speaking engagements where I’ve realized almost too late that I had to be in multiple places at the same time. Aside from the stress of unwinding my schedule, the feeling of guilt over not being able to split up myself, and my time, started to really wear on me. I got to the point where it became apparent that I had been running my life this way (and running on fumes) for the better part of a decade, often to the detriment of my own sanity, health and stability. It was time to make a change. That change was hard; it took time and a hefty dose of introspection. What was I really looking for? What was my purpose? Were my actions helping me to fulfill my goals and hopes and dreams? This reorganization of priorities led to a serious reduction of stress, headache and heartache and an increase in my overall mental and physical well-being. Realizing that I didn’t have to do everything for everyone all the time and learning to lead my team better at work were the two biggest wins for me. But I get it. We’ve all been stuck behind a computer screen for the better part of the last 36 months, watching social media, analyzing what everyone else around us is doing and sometimes unfairly judging ourselves based on what we see. If you were to look at my Facebook and Instagram pages, a life that seemed glossy and happy was actually one that was bringing me no peace. The travel, the awards, the fun, even the private moments I didn’t share with the world, none of these made me happy anymore. Striving towards homeostasis was only depleting my emotional reserves as fast as I could build them up. Part of the introspection I forced myself through taught me that there is sometimes peace to be found in chaos when you realize that it’s not forever. Dentistry can be incredibly isolating, but with a village around you (friends, family, hobbies, pets, therapy — whatever), we have the capacity to be incredible providers, caregivers, leaders and contributors to society. Teenagers queue for iced tea and, strangely, photographers are conducting photo shoots on the street for a small fee. Yuen Po Bird Garden Also in the vicinity is the Yuen Po Bird Garden which is worth a visit simply because I’ve never seen anything like it in Europe. Keeping songbirds is a popular pastime for older Chinese men and at Yuen Po, they can purchase everything they need for the hobby as well as meet up with fellow bird lovers. Shaded stalls sell a variety of pet birds including thrushes and finches, as well as ornate wooden cages and bird feed in the form of live crickets that are fed to the birds with chopsticks. Good night, little prince.

I am saddened to report that Casper left us to rejoin his brother late on Wednesday night.

It was very quick. One moment he was fine; the next, there was a sudden flurry of noise from his cage, as his legs failed him and he fell off a shelf. I sleep through normal rat sounds, but this was unusual. I bolted awake and went to see what was wrong.

Cas was never a lap rat. I wasn't even allowed to pet him, when he first came home. Mickie wanted to live in the armpit of my shirt forever, but Casper permitted me only to politely boople his snoot through the cage bars. Actually picking him up was reserved only for dire emergencies, like the fire alarm.

This was a touch awkward when it came to play time, since I needed a way to get them from the cage onto the bed where their rat-safe blanket and boxes were set out. But if he didn't want to be picked up, he didn't want to be picked up, and I wasn't going to argue with him too much. Instead I just offered them use of the box they came home in as their own private Rat Transport Device™. It was a red New Balance box, from sneakers (size 8), which presumably belonged to the lady I got them from. They learned quick that shoebox = runarounds. The fit became tighter and tighter as they grew, and while chewing bigger air holes gave them more room to poke their faces out, it didn't really make the interior any larger. Eventually they loved it so much they peed holes in the bottom, and I had to add more cardboard to the floor to keep it intact. But the Rat Transport Device™ still worked fine, so I kept the box.

Casper and Mickie were rarely separated. Their longest solo spell was when Tseng tried to take Mickie's tail off out of spite. Mickie got to spend a week in the hospital cage, getting his most distal point dunked in diluted betadine twice a day. He thought it was a great vacation. Casper was not as pleased. When it came time to take Mickie on his very last trip to the vet, Casper did not want me to pack the other rat up unsupervised. So I put them both in their box, put the box in their carrier, and carried them through the T together. Cas came home with me alone, now the sole and exclusive proprietor of their red shoebox.

Whenever I lose a rat, I make a small plushie and stuff it with some of their used bedding, so the friends they left behind have something to cuddle that smells familiar. Casper couldn't have cared less about his substitute Mickie, but I left their box in his cage a while, and he holed up in it for about a week, coming out only for dinner.

All of my rats journey across the Rainbow Bridge packed up in a box with grave goods, like the tiny royalty they are. The vet's office thinks it's sweet, and probably a little bit nuts. The receptionists definitely think of me as "the rat lady". Casper wasn't possessive of too much in life. He liked chocolate, and Cheerios, and destroying chopsticks, and they went with him into eternity. So did the little luminarium bag with the Mickie-silhouette from their New Year's Eve party, which was still sitting on my desk. But his favorite thing was probably just chewing companionably on his idiot brother, which he is now free to do once more.

I sent him to see Mickie with their red New Balance shoebox, just in case.

Casper's last meal, purely by coincidence, was pesto pasta with tomatoes and flakes of the nice canned tuna, because it was what I was having for dinner, and I'm not allowed to not share. If you would like to honor his memory, get someone else to give you a vigorous shoulder rub. Then have them make you a simple but tasty meal, and snatch it out of their hands to hide in your bedroom and gobble it down. I promise you, it's what he would have done.

Dear endless void that is the internet.

Today there seemed to be a reoccurring theme that I hate addressing. Love and romance. Please don't get me wrong, I am not someone who bashes on love and hunt down cupids and keeps them fixed in my cross-eyes. I am a lover of love. Love is something that I have always been enamored with. The idea of having someone to come home to is something that I've always wanted to make my reality. I've just had the topic of love appear all throughout my day. In my philosophy class, all over my fyp, and just talking to fellow classmates where they mention how they went on small dates with their partners. It's been causing the gears in my brain to turn, and I find myself falling on a few thoughts. They scare me.

The idea that I am destined to be alone. That I am unloveable in any romantic manner. Destined to live in a house with whatever pets I choose and spend my days in romantic solitude. I'm not anti-social. I love socializing, and I make friends easily. From classmates to teachers to customers at my job. It's easy to see I can communicate and bond with people with no issues. It just seems that my romantic goblet is bone-dry.

It is a little concerning since most people meet their partners in either school, work, or through friends. My friends consist of four people, two of which are my cousins. We are each other only friends for the most part. I'm almost done with college with one year left and then off to medical school, and at my job, we are more of a family than romantic prospects.

Sure, I'm 19 years old, but I turn 20 in March. I've never had a proper date. Never been in a relationship. Hell, I still haven't had my first kiss. I don't know a single person in the same situation I'm in, and that's frustrating.

I've always been ahead of the curve academically. In terms of awards and competition, if I haven't gotten first place, I placed at least top ten. I was in the 10% academically at my high school. I was in the theatre where I was always working on a new project or planning the next show.

Over time I've seen relationships rise and fall like empires. Some seemed as if they would stand the test of time, only to fall into a burning ember at the slightest spark of conflict. From playing matchmaker to guiding those through rough patches in relationships it feels as if my goal in life is to guide others to treasures that I cannot possess.

I just feel as if there is something wrong with me. I know I am overweight, loud, and have, as my friends describe it, "a big personality". What scares me is that since I am on a journey to lose weight, once I do, people might look at me in a different light. That I have a personality and a heart worth love and that I just wasn't skinny enough to have love in my diet. Or worse that my looks and weight aren't that big of a factor and I just am not worthy of having a relationship. That my personality isn't as warm or welcoming as I think it is. That my heart is too ugly to love.

Everyone talks about what it's like to be in relationships and how they affect you. But no one talks about what it's like to never be in a relationship. The feeling that you are broken or there is something wrong with you. The feeling that you are not meant to be loved. That god or the universe has decided that my path would not be filled with romantic love. No one talks about not even being considered a choice.

The thing is I know this is something trivial. I know that I have goals in life that go beyond finding love. But still, a part of me feels that I need this thing and there is something wrong about me that I haven't had yet.
