Aubrey Yang, Oscar-Award winning actress and award-winning director is set to direct the historical series Circe, based off of the book of the same title. Recently graduated from NYU with a double major in Classics and Film, Yang will take this expertise into her directing for Netflix. Since her Oscar, Yang has directed Episodes 3&4 of PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS, Season 2, Loverland and Boulevard 48. At the young age of 23, we hope to see her continue to thrive in this industry.

Her longtime alleged boyfriend, Oliver Bearman, enters his 7th year of Formula One racing, the young prodigy continuing his contract with Ferrari. Since his debut year, he has won 8 grand prix's and stays consistently on the podium or scoring points.

The two are often seen together at Bearman's races or Yang's premieres. Although nothing has been confirmed between the two, they have been spotted in Monaco, New York, Italy and Vancouver, where they have multiple estates.

Between the alleged couple, they have a net worth of over $40 million: we sincerely hope that a prenup is in their future.

One very admirable trait of Yuuri is his determination to go through with an idea no matter how terrified he is if that brings him closer to his goal. We see this trait come into play over and over throughout the show. Often, this drives him to do something he has never done before but knows how to do in theory.

And then there's this:

Viktor has assigned Yuuri a short programme, but Yuuri has absolutely no clue how to perform it because he doesn't get Eros.

Yuuri has yet to learn what (unconditional) love is, too, but he is able grasp it on a subconscious level since he doesn't struggle to explain his interpretation of On Love: Agape

based on the level of understanding he is currently at.

However, Eros is a concept so foreign to him that his reaction to the music is just this:

He can't even put his associations in words (note his clueless tone). These two very different reactions to both arrangements reflect perfectly his own experience and his (current) understanding of "unconditional love" and "sexual love".

Yuuri is the kind of person who despite his anxiety boldly changes the composition of his programmes over and over because he's that desparate to win and this results in some badass moves like:

putting all the jumps of his SP into the second half just because he has stamina

turning the solo jump (3S) in his SP into a quad although he never landed a 4S in competition

going back to jump 3 quads in his FS instead of one

exchange the 4T in his FS against Viktor's signature move

and most prominently: jumps 4 quads so that his FS has the same difficulty as Viktor's

While all of these are daunting for Yuuri, they're doable because he knows how to execute these jumps and he knows he has the stamina to go through with it. The ultimate result boils down to timing, technique, and stamina. But skating to Eros is a major disaster for Yuuri because he delivers his best skating when he skates true to his feelings, and to make things even worse, the stakes are astronomical (they aren't, but that's what he thinks). How should he portray something he can't even feel? How is he supposed to win the Onsen on Ice with that, especially since he believes that losing Viktor as a coach is at stake? No wonder the poor boy outright freaks out at the thought.

Yuuri would have been happy skating to Agape because he has an innate basic understanding of unconditional love. However, he's completely blind to Eros and will need to rely on workarounds to deliver a somewhat decent performance--at least until he and Viktor know each other well enough for Yuuri to figure out how to seduce him with his skating.

And yet in that moment, Yuuri doesn't flinch because he wants Viktor to coach him. He wants to win the Grand Prix Final. He wants Viktor for himself and to eat katsudon with him. All these things embody a dream he has been pursuing for half his life, a dream that involves skating and Viktor, and for the first time in his life, this dream is within reach. He's not going to let a 15-year-old punk take that away from him, he's going to fight for it with all he has. Because even though Yuuri doesn't get Eros, he has eros and this eros is very possessive (and Viktor happens to like that a lot, but Yuuri doesn't know that yet).

Even when he's terrified does Yuuri keep pursuing his goals because he has this strong determination inside him that pushes him to great lengths to make his dreams reality. Nothing is too difficult not to try. Not even when he's supposed to portray with his skating something he neither feels nor has a concept of. He's terrified, he isn't ready for that, but he does it anyway. To me, that's an exceptional showcase of his bravery.

A little rant below:

I often see fans treat Yuuri like his anxiety and his determination combined turn him into an enigma of contradictions. Like he's two different personas. But these two traits don't contradict each other at all. That's called bravery and this bravery eventually starts bleeding into Yuuri's off-ice decisions like when he sends Viktor home to Makkachin although he needs Viktor by his side, or when he decides to quit his dream so that Viktor can continue pursuing his (that was a bullshit decision, but that's not the point).

Yuuri claims that he needs Viktor to believe in him and that because of Viktor's love he is stronger, and while it's true that Viktor is a positive influence, his presence in Yuuri's life only reinforces Yuuri's own innate strength.

I’d love a completely new Sonic and Sega All Star Racing Game in 2025 or 2026. Both to see an expanded cast from more Sega franchises (Yakuza, Persona, Puyo Puyo, Hatsune Miku, Angry Birds, the “Power The Next Level” IP revivals) and due to untapped gameplay potential for a sonic racing game. My question is: if we were to get a new Sonic and Sega ASR do you have any ideas or hopes for how they could evolve the gameplay of a sonic racing game? (Aside from adding all content from the past titles)

I mean, do you have to evolve it? I'd like a straight collection, which means basically freezing all the gameplay features in time in the Transformed era.

The thing about those games and Mario Kart is that they don't evolve much. With a few exceptions, most Mario Kart games are what they always have been. More evolution than revolution. Tweaks to power sliding mechanics, maybe the ability to better mix and match characters and parts, but still Mario Kart after 8 or 9 games.

Where Sega and Sumo's games differed was having a real, proper singleplayer campaign. The plan was apparently to always have a story mode in those games, but they didn't get enough budget to pull it off until Team Sonic Racing. Regardless, they always contained at least some kind of singleplayer mission structure outside of the context of just racing, racing, racing. That's something that Mario Kart always lacked.

They can keep those as-is and still be a step ahead of most Mario Karts.

I dunno. I have a lot of ideas for what could make racing games better, though. I like to play those alone, by myself, against the computer. At risk of giving these ideas away for free, it's like...

One feature I liked from Dirt 2 that Codemasters struggled to carry forward was the idea that other racers on the track were characters you could interact with. Real people. They would banter with you as you raced, get angry if you bumped into them too hard, chat with each other during races, etc.

Codemasters got away with that for a few games but did sort of bring it back in newer entries like Grid 2 and Grid Legends, but it's lacking that human element -- you'll get an alert that you have "a new rival" because you were too aggressive with another racer, but there's no visible reaction or audible dialog to reflect that. And with how much Codemasters leans on having stories in those games, despite having the foundation for a Telltale-style "[xyz] will remember that" system, it never has bearing on the plot.

They are so close to unlocking the true potential of that system and they never fully commit. There's untapped possibility there for sure.

The other thing is, like, these games always have a finite amount of content. You play something like Ridge Racer 4 and it's always the same tracks, in the same order, every time you play. But does it have to be?

A lot of racing games will let you pick individual tracks one at a time if you want to switch it up, but I don't want that. I want to be able to tell the game "give me a new cup" and have it assemble one on the spot.

It's like a fighting game, right. What's the main fault of early Smash Bros. games? You fight the same characters, in the same order, every time. Later Smash games, and indeed most fighting games, offer you up fighters in a random order, so every time you fire up Arcade Mode, you're never entirely sure who your next opponent is.

So back when stuff like the Spelunky Daily Challenge was a hot conversation topic, I often wondered why racing games couldn't have, like, "The Grand Prix of the Day." Generate a playlist of four existing tracks in a random order for every day of the year.

Like, Mario Kart 8 has, what, 64 tracks right now? It should be able to generate me a new Grand Prix playlist of four tracks on command in trillions of variations. Technically, this is sort of what Mario Kart Tour does, but even then that's locked in to a live service model of "seasonal" content and you still eventually run out of Grand Prix cups to race on for that month. Also, Mario Kart Tour sucks and is bad to play.

And, like, what if you could share your Grand Prix playlists with others? Send them to your friends, issue challenges, configure parameters like mirror mode and reverse races. Maybe designate specific racers as being "experts" for that GP with different traits to race against. Maybe even let the friend record a ghost or some kind of Drivatar-style profile to race against as part of the GP.

This feels so natural and obvious to me. And to be fair, Forza Horizon games also kind of do some of this, but it's still not the same. It's not what I'm looking for.

When I play a racing game, the less I have to interface with the menu, the better. I'm here to race, not to scroll through track lists and be indecisive.

Here are a few inspirational details about my self-insert, isekai-turned-multiversal, dimension-spanning crossover epic, Across the Netflix-Verse: Joshua Sumter Meets She-Ra and the Princesses of Power 

Space Jam (1996) and Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021) -- Just like how Michael Jordan and Lebron James are live-action superstars entering a spectacular animated world and teaming up with the Looney Tunes in their two movies, Joshua Sumter (That would be me) does the same as he gets forced into the animated world of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power to help Adora and her friends in the princess-led Rebellion in their ongoing war against the dreaded Horde.

Epic (2013) -- M.K. is a teenager finds herself transported to a deep forest setting where a battle between the forces of good and evil is taking place. In similarity, Joshua is a grown, autistic young man who finds himself transported to a war-torn planet based on a rebooted TV series from the 80s.

Kanji Tatsumi's storyline from Persona 4: Arena -- In Persona 4: Arena, Kanji Tatsumi still thinks that everything in the entire P1-Grand Prix tournament is all a dream until he eventually finds out it is in fact not, so when Joshua first lands smack-dab in Etheria, he believes that his experience in Etheria from Season 1 to the Battle of Bright Moon is all a reinterpretation/Isekai adventure dream, that is...until he eventually later finds out that it's not a dream when he reaches the first episode of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power's Season 2.

Kingdom Hearts and PowerPuff Girls: Super Smash-Up! -- The Kingdom Hearts franchise features Disney-based worlds and how Sora embarks on an epic journey across the multiverse and encounters Disney and Final Fantasy characters in their respective worlds and helps them while the Powerpuff Girls: Super Smash-Up! comic crossover mini-series is a dimension-spanning epic inspired by Batman: The Brave and the Bold where Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup visit other Cartoon Network universes. In Across the Netflix-Verse: Joshua Sumter Meets She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Joshua did the same thing - this time, it features worlds and universes that are mostly based on, inspired by, and from your favorite Netflix shows and movies. In actuality, the She-Ra and the Princesses of Power world Joshua was first isekai'd into was one of the Netflix-based worlds in the Netflix-Verse, so he then later goes on a world-hopping journey across the Netflix-Verse and encounters main characters in their respective worlds like The Cuphead Show, Green Eggs and Ham, The Dragon Prince, Tiger & Bunny, We Can Be Heroes, Lego Elves: Secrets of Elvendale, The Sea Beast, Maya and the Three, Nimona, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, Firedake: The Silver Dragon, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and Dragon Age: Absolution and helps them out.

Emblem spirits from Fire Emblem: Engage and the Soul transferal from Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles -- The corporeal spirit incarnation of Mara, the previous She-Ra, is in her ethereal appearance and bluish glow, interacting with the world and fight. Moving her soul into Joshua's body, along with prior knowledge of her past, the transferal allowed Mara to communicate with Joshua as if living in their mind, offering him advice and intent on providing guidance. Joshua is unaware that Mara's strength made him fights like an entirely different person with a hard-hitting silver-ironed baseball bat as his holy sword-like weapon, wielding it like a hero's sword.

Notre famille s’apprêtait à passer des vacances de rêve outre-Atlantique. Mais la découverte qu’un des passeports ne serait plus valable à la date du départ, a semé la panique !

En se renseignant en mairie nous avons appris que les délais de prises de rendez-vous étaient trop longs pour obtenir un nouveau passeport à temps. Vous imaginez notre grosse déception ! L’un de nous se verrait refuser l’accès au pays.

Un bien plus grand voyage nous attend tous pour nous amener à notre dernière demeure pour l’éternité. Toutefois, la date du départ nous est inconnue. Demain, dans 10 ans ? Qui sait ? Serai-je pris au dépourvu, sans passeport valide ?

There are 22 fighters to choose from here, consisting of some newcomers and the casts of both Persona 3 and 4. Luckily, the actual fighting game parts of P4AU are excellent Arc System Works certainly didn’t disappoint in delivering an approachable take on 2D fighting with a ridiculously high skill ceiling. All that fluff might be a little more forgivable in the context of an RPG where you have lots of things to do around it, but it simply doesn’t work in a fighting game. There’s probably five hours of actual plot in here, yet it will take you thirty hours to get through it. Characters will take their sweet time to talk about whatever they’re talking about - they’ll spend several minutes reflecting on where they’re about to go before they actually go there. And while the plot itself does eventually develop into something mildly interesting, it’s consistently dragged down by entirely useless scenes that just pad out the runtime. Mashing ‘A’ through half an hour of dialogue doesn’t make the quick battle at the end of that gauntlet feel exciting-it feels exhausting. This means that you’re frequently retreading the same ground again, only you’re privy to someone else’s thoughts for this scene instead.Īll of this is to say that the lack of adequate gameplay elements in the story mode makes it a true test of one’s endurance. This would be bad enough on its own, but things are exacerbated by the fact that there are multiple routes to take through the story, with each taking the perspective of a different character. The story is exclusively delivered to you via visual novel-esque static screens where characters read their lines, sometimes for 10-15 minutes at a time, before you finally get to pick up the controller and fight in a battle.Īfter the three minutes it takes for the fight to be over, you then get thrown back into another lengthy expository sequence and the cycle repeats. Whereas the rich narrative of a typical Persona game is frequently punctuated by dungeon runs, school trips, and social outings, there is no such content to break up the verbose monotony here.

After a few members of the team go missing, the remaining members opt to step back into the world in the TV to join the competition in the hopes of finding their lost friends and getting to the bottom of what’s going on.įor a fighting game, the story here feels fine, but it suffers from some absolutely glacial pacing. Conveniently, the Midnight Channel has returned at the same time, and is now broadcasting a mysterious P-1 Grand Prix that seems to be hosted by a version of their friend Teddie. In the story mode, P4AU primarily follows the members of the Investigation Team a few months after the events of Persona 4 with the gang all getting back together in Inaba for Golden Week. In short, this is the most feature-rich version of P4AU yet, and it all comes now with the benefit of being portable.Ĭaptured on Nintendo Switch (Handheld/Undocked) Behind the scenes, this is also including all of the ‘2.5’ content from the Japanese exclusive arcade release of P4AU, which integrated a bunch of balancing changes to make for an overall better feeling experience. This means that all the additional fighters, a staggering amount of cosmetic options for each of them, and an additional story mode have all been thrown in. As oddly positioned as this project may feel, we’re happy to report that Persona 4 Arena Ultimax proves itself to be a competent fighter on Switch, one that we think will appeal both to fans of the Persona brand and to fighting game newcomers.įirst off, let’s recap what’s all included here. When Yuuri is crying in the parking garage in episode 7, Victor doesn’t know how to react, and slips back into a suave bachelor persona— “Should I just kiss you or something?”— in order to keep his messy self hidden; the kind that doesn’t know how to handle when people cry, the kind that acts impulsively, the kind that really doesn’t know what he’s doing. And Yuuri challenges him again. He doesn’t want Victor to be fake, to hide his true self behind a mask. He just wants Victor to stand by him, as himself. This could be another reason why Victor was so angry when Yuuri wanted to end things for the sake of Victor’s career. Victor had given himself, all of his whole, messy, impulsive, imperfect, balding self to Yuuri, who wanted to give it up for the sake of Victor’s suffocating career, his persona as The World’s Most Eligible Bachelor, God of Figure Skating, Victor Nikiforov. When Victor is afraid he’s too much, Yuuri embraces all of it— all of the messiness, all of the tears, shattering those masks one by one and letting them pick up the pieces together. When Yuuri is afraid he’s not enough, Victor helps him build himself back up, showing him that he is strong and deserving of everything he has.

“Yeah. Racing can be dangerous. It’s not an easy path to follow and I wasn’t sure if it was worth it anymore,” he said.

“And what brought that passion back?” you pressed on. You could see his eyes soften, still not breaking his gaze away from yours.

His next words made your heart race. “I made a promise to someone,” he began. You let out a soft gasp, luckily it was quiet enough to not be picked up by the recording device. “I was good at what I did. I wanted to make a name for myself. The promise I made was the only thing that gave me the strength I needed to work really hard over the last three years to get to where I am today. I wanted to build a better life for me and that person,” he finished.

You sat in silence for a few seconds before proceeding with the rest of your questions. In about 15 minutes you were all finished. “That should be enough,” you said as you pressed stop on the recording device and began packing up your belongings.

Mark didn’t move from his seat, instead he watched as you fumbled around with your equipment and laptop while packing things into your work bags.

“Y/n,” he said after a while. You froze, not wanting to turn around and face him. “You still have those earrings...” he said, sighing softly.

You had forgotten that the crystals were hanging from your ears, having worn them almost everyday since you got to Japan. You couldn’t stop the tears from forming in your eyes. “Y-yeah,” you stammered. You also still wore that chain with his initial on it but it was concealed beneath the collar of your shirt.

You felt pathetic. After all this time your heart still ached for him. You had dated others casually but still nothing was enough for you. Mark sighed. He wrapped his entire arm around you. You continued to shake your head, moving out of his touch. He locked both arms around you this time, engulfing you in his arms. For the first time in years you cried. Sobbing into his arms, letting out all the pain that you had carried with you for so long.

You could feel as he rubbed at your hair the way he used to, feeling the wetness of his tears on the top of your head as he let them slip from his eyes too. You stayed like that for a while, just holding each other as you both let the emotions flow freely from you before you slipped back down onto the couch.

Mark had released you and was leaning forward with his face in his hands. They were soaking wet as you watched his tears slip between his fingers.

“I-I’ve worked so hard,” he said quietly. “The worst moment of my entire life was when I thought that I’d die that night without ever seeing you again,” he sobbed.

You reached out a hand to rub his back, comforting him this time, letting him tell you all the things he had been waiting to say. “I told you that I was going to come back but honestly I didn’t know If I would be able to,” he confided. “I called Taemin right away. I didn’t even bother asking for help. I just told him to come get you.”

“I heard you called Haechan,” he said. “That call saved my life, y/n.” Your heart stopped. You remember panicking so much in that moment as you were on the phone. “Because of that he was able to call Taemin and tell him about the gun. He was the one who found me that night and got me to the hospital. I owed him too much already but that night it was clear that I’d never be able to repay him,” he told you.

“I’m so sorry. From the second I entered your life, all I had done was make you worry so much about me. That night was the final straw. Taemin and I agreed that putting you at risk like that was unforgivable. I didn’t want you to see me like that so I didn’t answer your messages or calls. I knew that if I did, you would come see me. I knew that if I heard your voice that I wouldn’t be able to say no,” he said as he began to sob even harder as the painful memories flooded back to him.

“It was lonely. I wanted you to be there with me so badly. You were all I thought about but I couldn’t ever live with myself knowing that I was putting you in danger, so when I had recovered enough I caught the first flight out to Korea,” he said, “it was too risky to stay in town and I knew that if I did that I would crack and end up coming to find you again. I couldn’t put your life at risk with those guys still out there.”

He finally leaned back, still only keeping his eyes on his feet. “I lived life recklessly until I found you. It wasn’t until I fell in love with you that I realized that there was more to life, but it was too late. My mistakes had caught up to me and I was devastated because I finally felt like I was on the right track,” he said.

You had let the tears fall. You didn’t know how hard it was for him to go through all of that alone. He was so brave. He made sure you were safe that night, safely getting you into the car without panicking even though he knew there was a possibility that he would die. He continued to speak and you continued to listen. “Haechan told me that you guys ran into each other a couple months later and how upset you were. It hurt me so deeply. I arranged a flight to come see you but by the time I got back you had already cleared out of your apartment. Taemin wouldn’t tell me where you went and I never saw you again until you started popping up online. You seemed happier so I gave up on trying to find you,” he answered.

He finally turned to you. “I can’t even apologize. It wouldn’t be enough,” he said, sounding so drained and defeated.

“Mark,” you said. Hearing his name escape your lips triggered emotions deep within him. “You have no idea how much I’ve missed just hearing your voice,” he confessed. He had gotten closer to you on the couch and your faces were hovering dangerously close.

Your chest began to rise and fall as your heart rate increased. Marks eyes trailed over every inch of your face before settling on your lips. Haechan flopped down on the couch. “So what exactly are you doing here?” he asked you.

“You know you’re in my hotel room right?” you asked back.

“Oh so you must be the interviewer then. Wow what are the odds?” he laughed. “How did it go? The interview, not the make up sex,” he said casually.

You narrowed your eyes at him as you prepared yourself to go off. “Okay, it’s time to go,” said Mark as he slipped his jacket over his shoulders and pulled Haechan up off the couch.

You walked the boys to the door. “I’ll call you tomorrow,” said Mark sweetly as he pulled you in for a goodbye kiss. You nodded before shooting him a quick “goodnight”.

You closed the door behind you in disbelief. You couldn’t really sleep after that so you began writing your piece on Mark, sending it over to your manager for approval afterwards before finally flopping into bed for some rest.

The next morning you checked out of the hotel to head back to Tokyo. Mark still had press to do but texted you throughout the day. The Grand Prix was coming to a close. You blew through the entire work day, feeling more cheerful than ever. Your manager loved the article and it went live on your company’s site that next afternoon. People loved the intimacy of the interview. If only they knew the half of it, you thought.

That night you decided to meet Taemin for dinner. He had done fairly well in his race, placing third, and was in the mood to celebrate. It had been a while since you had last seen your brother. You met him at the restaurant, joining him at his table with Yuri who had recently revealed that she was pregnant and was glowing brightly. You hugged her before she flopped back down into her chair.

“It’s crazy, isn’t it?” asked Taemin. He had spent the first half of dinner grilling you about what you had been up to since you got to Tokyo. You told him about all the work you had been juggling before getting around to mentioning your impromptu trip to Yokohama.

“What did they have you doing all the way out there?” he questioned. “Covering for my manager. I was doing an interview with a rookie racer,” you stated. “Oh cool, is he any good?” he asked. “Very,” you responded casually. “Best in his country actually,” you added.

“Which is where?” asked Taemin casually as he picked at his dinner. “Korea,” you mentioned. You watched as he went tense before meeting your gaze and then sighing. You raised your eyebrows at him almost daring him to say something.

“So, how did it go?” he asked you in a different tone this time. His tone made it clear he knew exactly who you had been interviewing.

“It was really good,” you said. “That’s why you seemed so much happier,” he said as his voice dropped.

“Is that such a bad thing,” you said with a cold expression. He sighed, not wanting to start a whole fight at the restaurant. “After all this time, Taemin? Are you really still so against us being together?” you asked.

“I love you,” he said. As close as you were, those weren’t words that you had heard leave his mouth. “I just want you to be with someone who is going to take good care of you, that’s all,” he said. Dinner ended pretty soon after that.

You hugged both Taemin and Yuri goodbye before heading back to your hotel room. Flowers had been delivered. You smiled at the sweet bouquet with a gift box as well. You pulled at the note that read:

Y/n, I’m sorry. Something came up. I have to fly back to Korea tonight. Good luck on your last day in Japan. I’ll still be in the air by the time you’re on your flight back home so please call me as soon as you land. I love you and can’t wait to see you soon. Be safe, baby girl.

Your heart sank a little but you smiled at the sweet message. You knew it would be difficult to do things long distance but Mark had agreed to visit you a week from now. You tugged at the ribbon on the gift box and opened it up. Inside was a brand new necklace with an M pendant on it. You teared up as you recalled the day he promised to replace the one you wore now with something better. You swapped them out, placing the old one in the box for safe keeping and stood in the mirror to watch the beautiful piece of jewelry fall into place over your chest. You smiled as you ran your fingers over it.

That was the first of many promises to you that Mark had made and kept. Over the next few months he had really gone above and beyond. He tried his hardest to give you the world, taking you on vacations and to his races. It was hard to split your time between L.A and Korea but Mark promised by the end of the year you would be moving in together — another one he kept as he relocated to L.A. Taemin and Yuri had both moved there too a couple months before, bringing his team with him as their individual careers blossomed.

Marks career took off too, he wasn’t just racing but also doing a lot of stunt work for films, TV, and music videos. Luckily you had continued to do lots of print work for online publications so you joined him (and Haechan) whenever work required them to travel. Soon enough things were starting to fall into place. It was around Christmas time when Yuri went into labour, and everyone gathered at the hospital to welcome baby Mina.

Lucas, Sicheng, and Yuta had dropped by earlier with flowers and gifts for the the new mama and her baby. It had been a while since you saw each other but it was nice to see everyone thriving and in good spirits.

“Looks like I’ve finally been replaced,” whined Haechan as he peered over Marks shoulder with a face of slight disgust, watching as his friend held the new baby. Taemin rolled his eyes from across the room and Yuri giggled, forever entertained by Haechan’s charm.

“I guess she is kind of cute,” he admitted.

“Kind of?” said Mark “she’s so beautiful,” he gushed, completely enamoured with the little bundle of joy.

She made cooing noises in his arms as he rocked her gently. “Yeah, that’s right. You’re so pretty! And you’re going to need a little friend to play with, aren’t you? Don’t worry, uncle Mark will —” he said in a baby voice before Taemin cut him off.

“Okay, that’s enough!” he said as he moved to lift the baby from his arms.

“It’s a good thing we’re already at the hospital, right Mina?” he whispered to his daughter, shooting a stern glance at Mark from across the room. “So if daddy hurts uncle Mark, he can see a doctor right away!”

Your hand flew over your mouth, shocked as you broke out into a fit of giggles with Haechan and Yuri. Mark pouted, pulling you into his lap. “Don’t worry baby Mina, uncle Mark won’t let you suffer alone for too long, I promise,” he said, winking up at you. You felt electricity course through your body at his statement. You knew very well that Mark was very good at keeping his promises.

I just released the third chapter of the fourth story in the Make this Place your Home series, a Persona AU verse that involves a certain leader of the IT finding a young and homeless Akechi Goro, an encounter that changes their lives, for better or worst.

Chapter 4 is the Grand Finale of the P-1 Grand Prix, where Yu and Naoto have made their way through the tournament to finally confront the mastermind behind it all, General Teddie and then some. The Persona 4 Arena arc isn’t done yet though, so stay updated for next week’s chapter!

Persona 4 arena ultimax

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax is a fighting video game co-developed by Atlus and Arc System Works for arcades, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360; a direct sequel to Persona 4 Arena, the game is a spin-off from the Persona, itself part of the larger Megami Tensei franchise. 2019 in Retrospect

2019 has been fairly quiet, so I decided to start off this year by looking back on it. I’ll be dividing it by main fandoms/characters/ships because this year there were actually some new ones. That hasn’t been the case since, like, 2013. 

Sonic the Hedgehog

It was an...alright year for Sonic. TSR was fine but too light on content, Mario and Sonic Tokyo felt like a step down from Mario and Sonic Rio but was still alright, and I have not played SEGA Heroes (and haven’t bothered with the Chao in Space short). Lowest spot for me was the IDW comic; the Zombot arc has had one interesting story so far, but the rest has had either bad writing (primarily aimed at Shadow’s turn) or it’s just been wallowing in its bleakness in a way even Shadow the Game didn’t. Then again, I find zombie stories uninteresting to begin with, so no duh I’m not interested in a Sonic take on it. 

Chaotix kind of mirror that. Vector’s managed to get a good showing in, batting 3 for 3 on the game front, and having a key role in two of them. And like I said before, the Chaotix have genuinely had the most interesting stories within the Zombot arc, although with Vector and Charmy turned this may become more limited. Speaking of though, Espio and Charmy have had weaker presences. Espio managed to get into all three games in some form but to a lesser extent (one just by name), and Charmy was really left behind. 

As for Vecpio, it’s been pretty bare for canon material stuff. Espio got mentioned in TSR as contributing the report that reveals Dodon Pa’s true role (with him and Vector being the key to making everyone shut up about him being suspicious, proving they’re best as a team). And Mario and Sonic Tokyo has something if you headcanon some stuff; when Vector talks about the medals, Espio is the first person you’re directed to. Nothing is said by Vector about Espio in text, but you can implicate that Espio was chosen first because of his strong link to Vector, being the first one Vector would trust to compete at a gold level. Other than that? Dry. And with no announcements for Sonic games in 2020, this may just continue. 

Crash Bandicoot

On the reverse side, we have Crash Bandicoot having a really strong year. CTR:NF came out (which is a remake of my favourite Crash game) and has been doing gangbusters. On top of this, it has been going out of its way to revive pretty much every dead character in the franchise, to the point that we have RIlla Roo back in the fold (something I genuinely didn’t think would happen 19 years beforehand). 

Skipping straight to the shipping for this, I wouldn’t have imagined it for Crash ever, but there’s actually some in-game material for me to latch onto for DingodileXKomodo Joe! Dingodile has been pushed into a more jovial character since N-Sane Trilogy, being even more doubled down on in CTR:NF. However, for the past 20 years Komodo Joe has managed to avoid being given traits closer to Espio. This game finally catches up to him, and does it hard. Seriously, his character took a hard turn for the stoic badass Espio did after Heroes, and when did Joe ever use Martial Arts magic ever? Aside from making that dynamic naturally more matching, Slide Coliseum joins in the fun with the visual upgrade. It has holographic projections of a trophy girl repping a couple of racers dancing each, and guess who the devs felt could be paired up for how they go together rhythmically? That’s right, my reptile boys. Man. 

Super Mario Bros

What a weak year for Mario for me. What Mario got for new games this year were Luigi’s Mansion 3 (which I’ve not played), Mario Maker 2 (which isn’t new story content and doesn’t interest me in the slightest), Yoshi’s Crafted World (which I forgot was a thing) and Mario Kart Tour/Dr Mario World (which...um). 

Because of this set-up, Bowser hardly got anything to do so he’s really been on the backburner. Considering how he’s been pushed in the rest of the decade that’s saying something. In fact, the most character stuff he got was in Mario and Sonic Tokyo, and even that was mostly just alright (I think Bowser Jr got the best deal out of that).

Spyro the Dragon

Spyro was alright, but this one’s more understandable. With 2018 being the big year for Spyro’s return, 2019 was a rest for the little guy. That being said it wasn’t completely quiet; Spyro Reignited Trilogy finally got its port on the Switch, and to tie in with that Spyro got an appearance in CTR:NF. 

Because of the latter point, Gnasty Gnorc got a surprisingly strong year. Not only having more people learn about his glow-up in SRT, but bringing over that petty and angry character to CTR:NF. Seriously, his bit in the grand prix intro video is great, and he has more lines in his racing quips than any other game.

I don’t think I made a post about OK KO on Tumblr (or maybe I did one, I can’t remember). But I did manage to get into this just before it got cancelled so there’s that. 

I maintain that the Sonic crossover (aka the first thing I really knew about OK KO) didn’t give me a good impression of the show.It just seemed like “here’s the Sonic and Eggman dynamic but with more cartoon shenanigans*” and it spent more time making endless Sonic references. While some were deeper cuts which actually were impressive, most were references I could see in pretty much any Sonic-referencing material. It wasn’t until I decided to look up more info on Lord Boxman sometime after because I wanted to check if N.Gin was an influence that I found out the plot of the actual show (crossover notwithstanding) was pretty nuts and way more up my alley. 

Speaking of, there’s Voxman. Whereas other ships on here I have to dig through material to construct nuggets from them, this was literally in the text. And why not, they have a good dynamic and are usually the most fun to watch bounce off each other. And I still like the fact that if KO and Lord Boxman were the Sonic and Eggman parallel, the story ends with Eggman becoming Sonic’s stepfather. Let’s see IDW tell a story like that, it’d be better than the Zombot stuff. 

*I think that was the point but still. 

LEGO

Man I wouldn’t have thought they would have remade LEGO Racers but the one they made this year was gre--

Okay no, this year basically reignited another flame that I thought was snuffed out like 16 years ago. For a brief history of me and LEGO, when I was six I had a freestyle box which I used to make an elemental superhero persona. I played with this until I was 11. Before then, my sister got some LEGO Harry Potter sets (which we still have in the loft), I played LEGO Racers a lot (and wasn’t very good at it), and I owned two random other LEGO sets (the trike from Life on Mars and Lava from RoboRIders). 

After that, I only dabbled in LEGO when there was a Sonic set done for LEGO Dimensions. I did try to play more into it, but it was really prone to crashing in certain worlds so I eventually got frustrated enough to stop playing it. Sometime in the interim though my sister started enjoying LEGO films without me knowing, so when February came around I was dragged to see LEGO Movie 2 when all I wanted to see in 2019 was Toy Story 4. Dad insisted on it since we rarely have family outings. In retrospect; 

LEGO Movie 2 hit me in a way a piece of media hasn’t for years, or even decades. It’s shot up to be my third-favourite film of all time. And it’s revealed to me that LEGO is shockingly good at making endearing characters. So much so that breaking it down (pun not intended) has to be done by theme.

LEGO Movie: Part of the reason why I didn’t get into LEGO earlier was because I did see LEGO Movie back in 2014 when my sister was given it on DVD (she wasn’t into LEGO then) and I wasn’t impressed with it. In retrospect, I can appreciate what it did more, and I bring it up because it’s what makes Unikitty, Benny and Metalbeard so endearing when combined with what happened in TLM2. Lucy’s okay (moreso in the sequel), Emmet’s cute, President Business is fun but the MVP is definitely Rex Dangervest, who’s this feral monster but with Emmet buried away deep inside ready to flesh him out. When I make LEGO stories, I just have Rex change his mind on rescuing himself after getting the dinosaurs, and instead wreaking havoc in the present. This kills Emmet off in any story I do but it’s a worthy sacrifice. 

LEGO City Undercover: As a video game person I’m kicking myself for not getting into this before. Frank Honey is the best; he’s adorable and weird yet still feeling very much human and basically the Emmet of his city. Rex Fury has grown on me lots since my initial assessment of him,it’s infectious how much fun he has with being a criminal (while Vinnie is more fun when not doing criminal stuff and Chan seems to be more focused on doing criminal stuff as a job. I also think his calmer side is criminally (no pun intended again) overlooked). Also Ellie is underrated, she is the best straight man you could ask for. 

LEGO City Adventures: As I’ve said before, pretty much everyone in LCA is adorable, especially Duke and Harl. Still hoping for more Daisy time in the second season, she could be a riot if played properly and not just a Fendrich stooge. 

Ninjago: Coming in with the hot take here; I prefer the movie version of Ninjago to the series. I think the problem with the series is that it has so much baggage from before the series started to iron out some of its issues and cliches that it’s kinda hard to get into as a new person, whereas movie Ninjago is a lot more approachable and written better off the bat (although I do see why it wouldn’t go down well with existing Ninjago fans). This all just makes me think of that moment in series 11 where Nya sees her worst fear of being normal in an artefact and it shows her movie self, almost as a take that. It just makes me think the show writers are salty about movie Nya kicking show Nya’s ass in being a better character. Also shout outs to Kai, Cole, Zane and Lloyd for being great characters as well (Jay is cute in the movie, his show self can be punted off a cliff for all I care). And I am with the movement to have Cole come out as gay (or at least bi if they want to keep Tournament of Elements I guess). 

Nexo Knights: This show is regarded as another Ninjago wannabe, but it feels very different to Ninjago to me. So much so, there’s not a single one of the heroes I don’t like and they all need to be cherished. Macy gets props for being the best female character to me, Aaron is probably my favourite now and this is a house of Clance for future reference. 

So, with all that being said, what do I think of the prospects for 2020? I think it’s going to be quieter than 2019 to be honest, since there’s a lot winding down, and on the game side there’s been zero announcements. Crash and Spyro having a rest is understandable, Sonic’s going to have to get past the movie before gearing up for 2021 probably (for the record I have no interest in the movie) and Mario just needs to try harder. And with OK KO dead, only LCA is holding the fort for guaranteed new content I want to engage in right now. 

You know what would be fun though? Series 20 of the minifigures theme is due at the end of this year. Wouldn’t it be awesome to use the occasion to give some phsical minifigures to characters who never got them before? LIke, Rex Fury somehow still has enough demand to be a persistent feature in the customs market, give him an official figure (especially since he’s the only character from LCU that’s not Chase that’s even appeared in merch outside the game). Or let Sky Lane get her LEGO Universe look in physical form to go with her LIXS look. Or heck, finally give Rocket Racer his original look, that’s how I discovered the minifigure world in the first place!
