Haven Perran Sands Holiday Park Review 2019
For those who don’t know, Perran Sands is a Holiday Park owned and managed by Haven Holidays (Bourne Leisure). Haven has a variety of holiday parks across the UK, with two in Cornwall. Perran Sands and Riviere Sands, in Hayle. Both are located near beautiful Cornish beaches and easily reach significant family attractions. This is an independent review; I have not been gifted or paid in any way.…

5th March - Lowen Dydh sen Pyran! Happy Saint Piran's Day - Patron Saint of Tinners (tin miners), and the most famous of the Patron Saints of Cornwall.
St Piran was an Irish bishop who was alive at the beginning of the 6th Century. It is said that he performed several miracles in Ireland including raising soldiers from the dead. He was very evangelical. It seems his over-zealous preaching brought him into disfavour with the pagan Kings of Ireland, who expelled him.
When I say he was expelled from Ireland, St Pirin had a millstone tied to his neck and was tossed into the sea! Miraculously he survived and was washed up on the beach at Perranporth near Newquay. Cornwall.
He built a small chapel on Perran beach, the ruins of which can still be seen partially submerged in the sand. Legend has it that his first "converts" in Cornwall were a badger, a fox and a boar, after which people flocked to Perranforth to hear his inspiring oratory of the Christian gospels.
It is said that St Pirin accidentally discovered tin. He chose a large black rock as a fireplace stone. When the fire was burning, a white liquid started oozing from the rock... molten tin. He shared this with locals, and this was the beginning of Cornwall's tin mining industry. It is thought the black ore and the white of the hot tin was the inspiration for the St Piran Flag, which has been adopted as the Cornish flag.
Following the discovery of tin the locals threw a party for St Pirin, to thank him for releasing them from poverty. After many toasts in his honour, St Pirin found himself rather inebriated... or wibbly-wobbly, as my Cornish friend Jerry used to say. This is the origin of the saying "Drunk as a Perraner", which was a phrase commonly used in England during the 19th Century.
I will drink to that!

Tag 4 liegt hinter uns.

Perranporth to Poltreath

The going gets tough later

Arriving in Poltreath, still nearly two hours to the camp site
Majestic chimneys from disused tin mines dominate the path around St Agnes. They are beautiful, and ghostly. I could easily imagine centuries of mine workers living out their (short, brutal) lives on the cliffs.
The day becomes an anxious one as I realise my charger has died and my phone is likely to die soon too. It’ll be two days before I can recharge, so for now I turn it off and start to rely more on following signs and asking people directions. I find, to my surprise that I enjoy being phone-free— everyone is so friendly — but also, not to rely on their directions which are invariably given from a car driver’s perspective. So, the farm campsite outside Poltreath which was ‘five minutes up the road’ was an hour and half slog.
Grateful thanks to the fellow camper who made me a cup of tea when I finally limped in at 7pm, and also to the kind couple who offered to drive me back to the path in the morning. All well.

Day 17 & 18
It was nice having Emma for company when we walked first from Newquay to Perranporth (Day 17) and then from Perranporth to Gwithian (Day 18)!
On day 17 we got surprised by a heavy rain shower on Perranporth Beach after which we had tea and hot chocolate in a pub. In evening the weather was nice and we saw a beautiful sunset from our camping spot a few km behind Perranporth (close to St Agnes). The area we walked through had lots of old mining shafts and holes in the ground, see picture below.

On day 18 (Friday) it was even more windy than the day before, but as with every wind speed of below 40 mph we just commented "oh, we've had worse" and kept walking against the headwind without further complaint. Only when it was time to set up camp, we realized how bad the wind really was. Emma carried lots of heavy stones to her tent to help fixate the pegs (she had an even worse night than us during the last storm, part of which she spent in a public toilet), and Rosa and I didn't even get our tent up - it was immediately pushed down by the wind. We didn't really have a choice but to pack up again and to keep walking. There was still one hour until sundown and we were getting nearer to civilization so our plan was to ask at a farm or a house for a sheltered spot to pitch our tent. After two failed attempts, a car stopped and the man and women in it asked if we were lost. We explained that we were looking for a place to stay with our tents, like a garden or a field or something. The couple with their kid in the backseat obviously had pity with us or were just really kind, because the man said he would drop his wife and son at their house 10 miles away and come back in around 40 minutes to pick us up. We had dinner (bread and cheese) and in the meantime got the message that the couple had a outbuilding for us with a kettle and a stove where we could stay! How amazing! It turned out the cute mini-cottage that became our home for the night even had a sofa and two matrasses, so we were all set for a cozy, comfy, and wind-free night.
