I am based in the coastal town of Teignmouth, where the powerful spring tides can bring large waves and strong rip tides.Teignmouth is located where Devon’s River Teign meets the sea. It offers beautiful coastline, a long sandy beach, a busy harbour and attractive countryside close to Dartmoor.InspirationI am an oil painter inspired by the energy of the seas. Studying film and art at the University of Plymouth has influenced the way I paint. It is important to me to include a sense of movement in my work. Having moved permanently to Devon 18 years ago, it is Devon and Cornwall’s coastline that still inspires me.My seascape series of paintings have evolved over the years. I am keen to explore the force of the ocean, the light coming through the waves and the ever changing colour of the sea. This painting has lots of texture with wide sweeping brush marks.For my work I like to use oil paint. This medium is very versatile allowing you to add thick impasto layers or more fluid translucent ones. As a result this medium is very useful when you want to capture ocean waves in all their forms and variety of colours. Also it is such robust a medium I can scrape the paint back or scratch into it too for added texture.
