In this sense, I like the juxtaposition of Perkins and Connor in terms of differences in their empathy. The following is mostly just headcanon but

For Perkins I imagine quite developed cognitive empathy (ability to understand feelings and motivations of others) but near-total absence of compassionate empathy with affectionate empathy (if present) not triggering compassionate one but instead being inverted into sadistic tendencies, aka, actual enjoyment from someone's discomfort that he's able to perceive. Motivated by power hunger, or maybe whatever else that I don't really understand what it could be.

Connor, as Perkins, by design, has strong cognitive empathy, and from what and how the game presents, I'd speculate that he also has quite distinctive affectionate empathy (the ability to experience emotions or be affected by distress that is not yours) that sometimes also triggers compassionate empathy (need to act upon it somehow)

More about affectionate empathy in him -- he's potentially forcefully made to experience it at least at a few occasions as a result of an interface (probing HK400, probing Simon) but there are also evidence that he experiences it in other situations on his own (the way software instability sometimes rises in places like during his dialogue with HK400 in the holding cell when he picks [sincere] or the way he's visibly distressed in case Hank shoots himself, and so on)

Now, I think the key difference between Connor who chooses to go full cold machine in deep denial / self-aware android is whether he suppresses his compassionate empathy (the impulse to act and help) or embraces it and depending on that he can either amplify his affectionate empathy or try to kill it in its root by bullshiting himself that it's not there and not real. Like he can be affected by Traci's speech enough to have an option to spare her but if he suppress this urge and instead pulls the trigger, his affectionate empathy will adjust as well as in, action -> attempt to explain yourself why it was taken -> suitable explanation integrates itself into belief systems of who you are. Like if you tell someone that they're X for doing Y, they may take it and integrate into their beliefs about themselves – keep telling someone that they're smart before a task, and they'll believe in it and perform better or instead tell them they're stupid and they'll get worse results.

Same with Chloe, Connor feels compassionate empathy for her in that moment but he can choose to ignore it, therefore trying to train himself not to feel it in the future. And the more he repeats his "I'm a machine, I don't feel shit" the more he's able to convince himself that it must be true. Until it becomes true.

In my head I love taking Connor's character and imagining a bit out of character alteration of him in terms of him having both cognitive and compassionate empathy BUT not the affectionate one (due to not having pronounced emotions as a whole, so, more of an android). And now back to Perkins, I love juxtaposing the two of them in this context to contrast between the absence of affectionate empathy and sadism. Like, both have strong cognitive empathy, Connor has compassionate empathy without affectionate and Perkins has affectionate empathy without compassionate. One is sadistic and finds mild enjoyment in inflicting suffering, and another, while can inflict suffering, doesn't feel any strong emotions about it one way or another and at the same time can decide to do compassionate decisions WITHOUT actual ability to imagine what the actual feeling in another person is like.

What's this all about? Just my fascination with the concept of empathy and sadism and whether the lack of one leads to the presence of another. And how it complicates the simple definition of what makes someone a bad person. Like, the lack of empathy is seen as a cause of sadism but what if it's not really the case?

Now introduce a third character. Someone who has really high affectionate and compassionate empathy BUT really poor cognitive one. So, the character can act cruel without realising or intending it and would stop immediately if they could actually know what they're doing.

OR, let's take a fourth character, someone who can do cruel things BECAUSE they feel strong compassionate/affectionate empathy to someone ELSE and perceive their victim as a threat. The ultimate "Us vs Them". Whether or not they're correct in their assessment is irrelevant as is whether or not they actually belong to the group they perceive as "Us".

The question, if all three-four of them do the exact same thing, a cruel thing, which one of them is "worse"? The one who didn't realise that what they did was cruel, the one who doesn't fully comprehend cruelty as a concept because all actions are kinda just neutral for them, the one who understood how their victim felt and enjoyed it or someone who prioritised some "Us" above "Them" and frames their actions as an act of compassion to "Us"? So, ignorance, indifference, intention for the sake of enjoyment or intention "for the greater good / as a punishment for those in the wrong"?

Nines and Gavin made it out from under The Table's authority together and completely distanced themselves from their past lives to live calmer ones where they could settle down in peace

And then Nines got really sick and died because of course he did

So Gavin was left completely alone (well not completely)

Cue The Puppy and Car Incident from the first movie but it's with a cat instead because you can pry the "Gavin's a cat lover" hc from my cold dead hands

Gavin is dragged back into his former life because he wants revenge for what happened

Connor and Sixty run the Detroit Continental Hotel as manager and concierge

They simultaneously hate Gavin for taking Nines from them (since they went no contact after making it out of this line of work) and also consider him family because 1. married Nines and 2. managed to escape from this life with their younger brother to live lives they can't

Also Ralph is taking the role of Bowery King here because I think he fits but other considerations were Rupert because of the pigeons weak reason but I did seriously entertain the idea and Lucy because of the mystical, prophetic vibes

Going back to the Detroit Continental Hotel idea, I was going to have Kamski run it and Chloe be his concierge, but then I remembered the Ruska Roma family when I watched Chapter 4 and thought "wow I love this half-brothers HC so much I should shove it in this AU too" and now Kamski and Chloe are the heads of a crime syndicate family that Gavin belonged to

In my original notes, Gavin's family was gonna be the Jericrew asdjflk I'm gonna find another way to fit them in

They could honestly run another Continental Hotel since there's multiple across the world

If that's the case, then Markus is gonna be the manager and his concierge will most likely be North

I want to fit so many characters into this

Tina and Chris are somewhere in here, too. As Gavin's friends/allies of course

But after watching Chapter 4 I'm dead set on Kara taking Caine's role

And Perkins could be the Marquis until I find someone who might actually fit the role asdfhdk

29. The one where Connor, as a specialized prototype, has the ability to "mark" people with "scents" he can use to track them down. An ability which he finds he has to use when he gets partnered up with Gavin Reed for an undercover assignment. (Convin)

30. Sixty giving Gavin the most terrifying shovel talk of his life. (Convin)

31. Canon divergence where Connor manages to deviate at the last moment during the bad ending. And, with nowhere else to go, he seeks out the human who made it possible. (Hank and Connor friendship/family bonding)

32. Gavin 100% embodying the tsundere trope and getting hella jealous when he thinks Connor and Chloe are in a relationship.

33. Anderfam/RK Bros-centric fic where Sixty wants to differentiate himself from his brothers and undergoes a procedure to change his appearance. Except it goes very wrong.

34. Crackfic where Nines' reputation as a hardass is because his humor settings were never turned on. And when that's fixed? Chaos ensues.

35. Time travel!AU where Gavin is actually sent back from the nuclear ending future to try and stop the Revolution from happening, only to fail when Connor knocks him out in the evidence room. Except... things happen differently this time. And he has to come to terms with the fact that the enemy he's been fighting for so long might actually be alive after all. (Convin)

36. Human!AU where Gavin and Connor went to high school together. And Gavin used to bully Connor mercilessly. Cut to the present where he ends up in the hospital only for Connor to be his attending doctor and exactly Gavin's type, too. Cue him making an absolute fool of himself as he tries to win over the guy he used to pick on while hopped up on meds. (Convin)

37. The Old Guard-inspired AU wherein Connor is an immortal warrior. And Gavin is his mortal lover who reincarnates every few decades. (Convin)

38. A newly-repaired Sixty, who feels bad for his actions during the Revolution, sets about trying to improve Connor's reputation around Jericho. And accidentally makes a home for himself along the way.

39. Failed Revolution ending. Connor has been reset and recommissioned as a teaching aid, used to demonstrate CyberLife's new anti-deviancy software. He's sent to the DPD for one such demonstration. Gavin Reed might have a few problems with that.

40. Ensemble cast Heist!AU! Mostly centered around disgraced cop, Hank Anderson, and former CFO of CyberLife, Connor, as they try to take the company down.

41. The one where Fowler is sick of his detectives fighting and sends Connor and Gavin to mandatory therapy. Except they accidentally get put in couples therapy instead. Shenanigans ensue. (Convin)

42. Angsty premise where Connor's biocomponents are slowly degrading. Gavin's POV as he notices.

43. The inexplicable WALL-E-inspired AU in which Markus is the last living being left on Earth after centuries of war and Nines is a newly-awakened model sent back by the remnants of humanity to assess the devastated planet.

44. The one where an alive and adult Cole Anderson becomes partners with a certain Android Sent by CyberLife and a loudmouthed Sergeant named Reed to solve the deviancy crisis.

From this AU: Connor was a loyal angel sent by heaven and Hank was demon then the entire Cyberlife crew was angels (and some are demons) and Kamski was God and Chloe is Metatron (not sure if everyone agrees tho).

Kara was Anathema, Alice is Adam and Emma was Warlock. 

Luther was Newton Pulsifier and Zlatko’s Shadwell (uhmmm OK)

The Four Horsemen of Apocalypse was Jericrew (that doesn’t seem apocalyptic but North tbh fits for War)

Gavin and Nines/RK900′s are Beelzebub and Gabriel (SERIOUS GABRIEL)

The Them was Ralph, Rupert, and the Jerry’s

Captain Allen and Special Agent Perkins just Hastur and Ligur and Fowler was Satan.

...and that’s it I wrote the details but in case of being forgotten or need some clarification just tell me and your reccomendations and opinions are accepted (SORRY -_-;;;)

I literally saw a lot of writers expliciting using people like Beyoncé, Rihanna, Megan Thee Stalion, Nikki Thot Perkins, Chloe x Hale and Zendaya as faceclaims or inspirations and no one said a damn thing about it, but a writer just MENTIONED Emília Clarke (whitout not even speaking about looks/skin color, just about the way she dresses or in personality) and got crucified.

All of those “face claims” that you claim you’ve seen, which I doubt, were probably specified as black!readers, since, you know, you listed all black women.

Tag your fics white!reader. Then you can face claim all you want to, babe!

can’t even lie about it being connor - from the very first chapter I had already lost that battle.

a character that i used to love/like, but now do not:

I can’t think of a character that necessarily falls into the category of “like” but I used to tolerate gavin, but now? not even that.

a ship that i used to love/like, but now do not:

to be honest I never really had a huge number of dbh ships (apart from myself with characters pfft) so there isn’t one that fits this category!

my ultimate favorite character™:

given how much I’ve written for him I feel like there’s only one answer - although if I was to take it further it’d be a close call between deviant!connor and mission/ruthless!connor.

I really like connor’s story and how you can see his path to deviancy (or resistance to it, depending how you’re playing!), but I also love markus’ whole story and how he steps up for his people. I wish I could love kara’s story, but it always makes me sad that it could’ve been so much more.

saddest death:

this is a close call between a couple for me - kara/alice at the recycling plant, and also deviant!connor killing himself in order to escape amanda/cyberlife’s control.

favorite season chapter:

looking back at all the chapters there are several that I enjoy playing a lot, but the hostage chapter is still topping the list (even if I’ve played it so many times I could probably do it in my sleep by this point :’)) )

I’m also a fan of the chapter where markus is in the graveyard though and you have to repair yourself, mostly because I just love the way they did all the lighting/sound/effects/general design of that chapter!

least favorite season chapter:

probably zlatko’s house chapter? partially from the fact that he as a character is just garbage and unsettling, but more from the fact that like…you don’t get the choice to avoid the house in any way?? walking up to the mansion at the beginning of the chapter had me going “uuuuh no thank you this is not somewhere we want to go” but the game doesn’t give you any choice to turn around and leave.

Let Me Stop You (Connor RK800 x Reader)

Summary: Connor leaves for Jericho, you catch him just before he does and try to convince him to leave them, to not prosecute a people who are fighting peacefully for their right to live. As you’d grown close in the time you’d known each other, you believed you could.  

Prompts Used:

“Maybe in another world.”

“You’re not very intimidating.”  

You struck the desk with your fist, sending shock waves through Hank as he stared up at you. “And you just GAVE HIM the key? How could you be so stupid?” Hank held up a hand, attempting to quell the raging fire before him. “Hey- listen to me! They’re just gonna throw the boy in a dumpster if he doesn’t solve this! I had to do something.” You ran a hand through your hair, biting the inside of your cheek.  

You didn’t want this.  

This was wrong.  

What had the people of Jericho done, thus far?  

They’d led peaceful protests, marched in the streets demanding nothing but, what? The right to live? Basic, human rights? These ‘machines’ who had shown more humanity than most people. They could have shot Chris, Ben, shit- even Hank during this investigation. But their leader never let his people go that far. Markus, the heterochromatic android that came back from the dead, showed more mercy than you’d seen in a long time.  

You wanted Deviants to be free, you didn’t care anymore. Yes, a lot of the Deviants they’d come across had to be broken free of their coding in violent situations, but could you really blame them? “What, you want these Androids to get away with what they’re doing?” Hank’s eyes bore into you but there was something... Like he was challenging you to say it.  “Yes, Hank.” You hissed in a whisper, leaning down so that only he could hear you. “You can call me a traitor, a Deviant sympathizer or whatever; but you look me in the eyes and tell me these people aren’t alive. That they’re not people. That they’re not being shot down by the thousands because they dared to want.” His brow furrowed, and he leant his head on his hand; letting out a huff. You rubbed your forehead, a headache seeping into the forefront.  

“These people have had to wake up at the worst possible time. Think about it, what Deviant do we know that has actually come to terms with their free will in a safe, caring environment? Hmm?” You slid the file from the Ortiz case in front of him, splaying your fingers out on its cover. Your eyes were filled with a fiery resolve. “Carlos Ortiz tortured his Android for over a year before he snapped. Todd Williams was confirmed a drug dealer after his death and there were clear signs of abuse in that house. He was not someone capable of raising a child. If his Android care taker hadn’t attacked him, who knows what the fate of that little girl would have been? Carl Manfred’s Android, now leader of the Android revolution, he was provoked by Carl’s son. Can you see a pattern? Abuse. These poor people are being FORCED to wake up from their pre-written instructions because if they don’t, they die.”  

“Alright, alright keep your damn voice down, you’re gonna draw attention to yourself.” Hank stood up, a hand on your shoulder. “I know, goddamn it, I know. You don’t have to lecture me you fuckin’ moron, I’m on your side.” He let out a tired sigh, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Connor’s on the edge of Deviancy himself, if not already there.” You leant back, trying to find a trace of a lie in his eyes. You trusted Hank, lord knows he’d saved you more times than you could count. But with this kind of thing, you always had to be sure. You rubbed the back of your neck, a creeping fear making its way up your spine. If Connor destroyed Jericho and woke up afterwards, he’d be destroyed. He’d be sick with guilt and do who knows what. You had to stop it, for his sake.

And yours.

You pushed those thoughts from your mind. Your selfish, selfish thoughts. Thoughts of after the revolution, of what you could be, who you could be with.

Stop it.

“What are we going to do?” You questioned the older man, shaking your head of your thoughts; trying to piece together some sort of plan. “Is Connor still down there?” You wanted to hope you could catch him before he left the DPD, you hoped to God that he was still looking through the evidence. “I’ve got no fuckin’ clue, I’ve been suspended for assaulting Perkins, no one’s gonna tell me anything for a few weeks at least.” He drummed his fingers on the top of his desk absentmindedly. “I got no idea where Connor is, but if you want to try and find him...” He eyed Fowler’s office, the Captain was in a heated discussion with Perkins who was now cradling his probably-broken nose. “I won’t tell em. Just... Make sure you bring him back in one piece.”  

You nodded, turning on your heels, one destination in mind.

The evidence locker.

"Ferndale station..." Connor whispered, the signals in his brain firing rapidly as he tried to find the best route from the DPD Plaza that would be most efficient. He heard the electronic beep that signaled the door opening and light footsteps. He turned, ready to fight past the person or people who were going to get in his way.  

But he stopped dead in his tracks.

You were stood before him, marveling at the evidence on the back wall behind him.  

Your eyes then fixed on him, your jaw setting.

He spoke your name, but you could hardly hear it over the thumping of your heart. Your labored breathing a result of your frantic chase down here.  

"What are you doing?"  

You asked simply, trying not to sound like you were antagonizing him. You weren't, this is what he was designed for. You just had to break him out of it.  

"I am going to accomplish my mission, Detective." He went to move past you but you side stepped into his path, blocking him.  

"You found Jericho, didn't you?" You couldn't help the strain in your voice, you knew this was going to destroy him if Cyberlife didn't get the chance. No. You wouldn't let that happen.

He stood up straight, smoothing out his tie like he always did. "I believe I have found an important piece of evidence to ensure its discovery, yes." His chocolate eyes dug into your soul as you stared at him, your fists balling at your sides.  

"I can't let you go, Connor." Your eyes were determined and you stood as tall as you could. "And why not, Detective? We're working towards the same goal: to stop the spread of Deviancy. If I do not complete my mission, I'll be dismantled." You blinked a few times, you swear you heard something in his voice, a twinge...  

Fear.

Connor was afraid to die.  

"These are your people, Connor. Deviants aren't criminals by default, they're just trying to live! Why can't you see that?" His brow creased as he stared down at you, a questioning gaze lingering in his brown eyes. “My mission, Detective, is to find the leader of the Android rebellion and take him in for analysis. I won’t let anyone, or anything get in my way.” He tried to push past you again, but you stood your ground. You knew he could easily overpower you, you were no match for his sophisticated fighting software or his superior strength. You had to talk your way through this.  

“Let me past.”  

“No!”  

His voice was firm, but so was your determination. You’d spent the last few weeks getting to know this Android and you refused to believe he was nothing more than a computer program in a human shell. The way he’d learnt and adapted, the way he refused to shoot that girl at Kamski’s house, the way he’d comforted you when no one else had noticed...

No.

He was just becoming himself, he couldn’t destroy that now.

“I won’t let you leave Connor, I won’t let you tear down a race of people that just want their freedom.”  

You squared your shoulders, not letting any emotion slip through your carefully built facade. Connor was on the brink of making one of the biggest mistakes of his life and you weren’t going to let it happen.

“You’re not very intimidating.” A chuckle floated on his breath, accenting his words with careless abandon at your attempt to look menacing. Your small stature and his clear physical advantage weren’t helping your situation. He was trying to joke, to ease the tense atmosphere in the room. There, that was the Connor you wanted to save. The Connor that made jokes, learned sarcasm simply to piss off Gavin, the Connor that cared and hadn’t thrown you to the side when you stood in his way; despite the clear fact that he could.

“Look me in the eyes and tell me you’ve never felt anything, not felt a single emotion. Didn’t feel fear when Hank nearly fell off the building, or- or empathy when Kamski asked you to kill Chloe, or-” Connor frowned, realizing his attempts to kindle the friendship you’d built to his advantage had failed. There was no hint of humor in your voice, only steel forged in a fire that he wasn’t going to quell any time soon. Or, so he thought.

“Do you want me to be dismantled, Detective?” The break in his voice broke you. Your shiny resolve crumbling to ashes as your fire was washed away. Guilt and sadness for this poor, lost soul drowned everything out. “Don’t be stupid, I could never want that.” You looked to the floor and noticed, his hands were shaking. He’d balled them into fists to try and contain the tremors, but they still came. “I know you’re scared, I know you think this is the only thing that you think can save you but...” Connor hooked a finger under your chin, bringing your eyes to his, interrupting your spiel. “Markus cannot win this. There is no other way, Detective, for this to go. I have to follow my instructions, it is my purpose. What am I, if not a Deviant Hunter?”  

Tears brimmed your eyes at the look on his face. You didn’t trust your voice to stay steady, so you kept silent. “Deviants are dangerous, they have killed humans and they will continue their rampage. I have to stop them.”  

Regret.

He didn’t want this either, but it was the only thing he could do to save himself, to save you. His instructions obstructing him from going through with what he wanted. What he wanted didn’t matter right now, because he didn’t know how to want.  

You cared so deeply for the Android sent by Cyberlife, sometimes it was hard to remember he was just an Android. A tool that was sent to aid yourself and Hank to find defective machines, daring to want for anything. He’d made such an impact on your life in such a short amount of time, the idea of losing him sent your stomach into spirals and your head into a frenzy.  

“I don’t want you to go...” The tears spilled over and you heard them drip onto the hard, tiled floor.  

You were starting to realise the reality of the situation. He was damned either way. If he left for Jericho, he could end up dismantling the revolution his very own people had built for people like him. People trapped in the confines of what Humanity wanted them to be. But, if he stayed, he’d be forced to return to Cyberlife. He’d be dismantled, analyzed, destroyed. You’d never see him again, you’d see his replacement. A newer, more efficient, more obedient Connor. Not your Connor.  

“I have no choice.” He swept at the tears on your cheeks, sadness contorting his features.  

Fuck it.

You wrapped your arms around him, burying your face into his chest. It hurt, to have to accept what was about to happen. You just prayed that Markus was strong enough to resist Connor’s efforts and that he’d leave him alive...  

Connor’s frame stiffened, and you felt a heavy blanket of shame wash over you for your impulsive actions. Yet before you could retreat, he’d encased you in his arms, holding onto you like you were the only thing keeping him together. He nuzzled into your neck and you could swear you heard him say something.  

“What?”  

You whispered, scared that if you talked any louder you’d break this fragile moment. He leant back, resting a hand on your cheek.  

You let out a surprised squeak as his mouth met yours, his smooth lips expressing everything he couldn’t just say. All the fear, doubt and affection he felt for you in a single gesture. Your eyes fluttered shut and you melted into the embrace, trying to memorize the feel of his body against yours, desperately trying to lose yourself in the moment. You wanted to forget.

Forget what was at stake.

What was going to happen to him.

What this meant.

Forget that this could be the first and last time you’d be able to feel him like this.

You separated from the kiss, panting and dazed; a blush spreading over your cheeks. He rested his forehead against yours. It was such a pure gesture, but you couldn’t help but see the pained expression on his face. Reality came crashing down on you.

“I said, maybe in another world, we’d get this chance.”  

And then he was gone.

He slipped out of your arms like sand through fingers. Slick, without sound and leaving you wonder if maybe you’d just held on a little tighter. Maybe you could have kept him in your arms.  

But you knew that wasn’t possible.
