Would Bill like
1. ABBA
2. Grateful dead
3. Mitski
4. Vocaloid (things like Kikou, Echo by Creeper-p, and Again also by Creeper-p
5. Kate Bush
Idk these were things I thought he'd like
For those of y'all just getting here, I'm using this list here as my guidelines for What Music I Believe Bill Cipher Would Like, Loosely Based On Canon.
1. Yeah I think he'd like ABBA (or, y'know, BABBA, as the case may be). He likes party music and that's like, party music of the 70s—though I imagine he lost interest in them as they stopped being contemporary.
But more importantly, it gives me the mental image of Dipper singing Disco Girl and Bill Fucking Cipher joins in like "I LOVE THIS SONG!" He'd be mortified.
Now I'm just thinking of parody song titles for BABBA. "Hand Me! Hand Me! Hand Me! (A Guy Late At Night)." "Mommy Mama." "The Loser Takes Nothing." "Dollars, Dollars, Dollars." "Superb Soldier."
2. Now, I've said I think Bill is all over well-known psychedelic music, so you'd think Grateful Dead would be top of the list; but when I sit and listen to their top hits, it makes me think less In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida or Jefferson Airplane, and more John Denver, so thus far I've passed over them. But digging a bit deeper I'm finding more stuff that gives me Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds vibes, so this is probably just a sign that I need to finally fill in the Grateful Dead-shaped hole in my mental musical library like I've been meaning to do for years. I'm gonna tentatively say "yes" just due to the fact that it's the Grateful Dead, but I haven't listened to them enough to say WHAT he'd enjoy.
3. I will grant that it's very funny to imagine Bill laying on a bed staring at the ceiling while "NOBODY, NOBODY, NOBODY—" blasts at top volume. However I think the main reason it's funny is because it's jarringly incongruous. Most of Mitski's music is dreamy-sounding, deeply introspective, and carried not by simple pop-friendly melodies but by the the complexity & poetry of the lyrics—and I think all of those are things Bill tends to steer away from. "Can you take psychedelics to it in the back of a van with tie-dye tapestries on the wall?" or "Can you rave to it?" covers most of his casual music listening.
(However, I do think he's got an ex girlfriend who did beat poetry that sounds kinda like Mitski lyrics as performed by a screaming death metal band. Someday I'll get around to drawing some of his exes.)
4. I say this as somebody who loves "Again" and "Echo"—I think he'd hate them, & probably most of Kikuo's music. There's a vast breadth of Vocaloid music—it's not really a genre so much as it is an instrument—and while I don't necessarily think he'd outright reject anything made with Vocaloid, I do think he'd steer away from the lyrically darker music. Like I said, I don't think he likes deeply introspective music. This triangle hasn't acknowledged or explored a negative emotion in a bajillion years and he's not about to start now. I mean, come on:
Cause I am on fire; a crying, burning liar; seeing nothing, nothing, but myself; and I'm the one with the lighter!
Is that about Bill? Sure, that's about Bill!!! You could insert it into the middle of the axolotl poem and hardly even notice.
Tumblr media
(Making this was a mistake, in my head I started singing "if he wants to shirk the blame, he'll have to invoke my name" to the tune of "Again". Unplanned new headcanon voice for the Axolotl.)
However, "this describes Bill well" doesn't mean "Bill would like this." In fact, I think "this describes Bill well" almost guarantees that Bill would dislike a particular song. The fact that "Again" has such an apt description of him is exactly why he'd despise it. If you try to play this in his hearing, he's blowing up the speaker, burning down the house, turning your head into an ice cream cone and biting it off, and then telling his stunned silent friends that he got tired of this whiny boring music now let's go destroy something fun. Assuming he doesn't simply show no reaction to it at all so that he can avoid showing weakness.
Just about any songs about doubt, remorse, or bad feelings are gonna get the same reaction out of him. He doesn't wanna touch them with a ten foot pole. Music is for partying, music is for escapism. I can see him enjoying a darker song if it's framed in a way that invites the listener to derive voyeuristic schadenfreude from the singer's suffering—but if it's meant to confront you or discomfort you, or if listeners are expected in any way to personally identify with the lyrics, he's not touching it.
I could potentially see him listening to some of Kikuo's music if he can engage it STRICTLY as a party song. For instance, Gomenne Gomenne has sections that make it a solid dubstep song—with frenetic wordless singing on top, I think that'd appeal to Bill—so he might could put it on at a party... as long as the party is loud enough that he doesn't have to pay any attention to the lyrics about horrific child abuse and the resultant trauma. Maybe find a remix that leaves out all the lyrics about low self-esteem, brokenness, and worthlessness—but leave in the bits about rib soup, he thinks that part's funny once the context is removed. Violence is great, he just doesn't wanna be expected to pity someone.
It's a big stretch, though. If I had to pick Vocaloid songs for him, I'd look for either party-ready EDM with relatively bland lyrics or the really experimental pieces that do ear-hurting insane discordant things by pushing the Vocaloid program to the limits of the sounds it can generate; but I probably wouldn't pick Vocaloid for him at all.
5. I don't have anything special to say about Kate Bush, I just don't think anything about her music would intrigue him but there's nothing about it that would specifically deeply rub him the wrong way. Since I assume he's passingly familiar with most notable popular/mainstream artists, I'm sure he's heard her hits, he could probably sarcastically bang out a few bars of "Running Up That Hill" on the piano if he ever somehow found himself in a situation where sarcastic "Running Up That Hill" would be fitting; but the same could be said of any other chart-topping musician.

NFL Update: August 21, 2024
As the NFL preseason heats up and teams inch closer to the regular season, several key storylines are emerging. Here's a comprehensive update on the latest news, standout performances, and notable injuries from around the league:
1. Quarterback Controversies and Competitions
New England Patriots: The Patriots have been closely watching the quarterback battle between incumbent Mac Jones and rookie standout Tyler Jackson. Jackson’s impressive preseason performances have put significant pressure on Jones, who has struggled with consistency. Coach Bill Belichick has yet to name a starter, but the competition is expected to intensify as the season opener approaches.
San Francisco 49ers: Over in San Francisco, Brock Purdy continues to recover from his offseason elbow surgery. Sam Darnold has been taking the majority of first-team reps, and the 49ers are hopeful that Purdy will be ready for Week 1. The team remains optimistic but cautious as they evaluate Purdy's progress.
2. Standout Preseason Performances
Rising Stars: Several rookies are making waves this preseason. Chicago Bears running back Jamal Williams has been a revelation, showcasing explosive speed and agility that could earn him a prominent role in the Bears' offense. Likewise, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Nate Williams has been a favorite target in the preseason, suggesting he could become a key playmaker for Dallas.
Veteran Showcases: Veteran wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins has shown he still has plenty left in the tank with the Tennessee Titans. His chemistry with quarterback Ryan Tannehill is evident, and if he stays healthy, Hopkins could be a major asset for the Titans’ offense.
3. Injury Updates
Kansas City Chiefs: The Chiefs have been monitoring the health of their star defensive end, Chris Jones. Jones has been sidelined with a calf strain, but the team is hopeful he will be ready to go for the start of the regular season. His presence on the field is crucial for Kansas City's defensive line.
Los Angeles Chargers: Chargers linebacker Joey Bosa is dealing with a shoulder issue that has kept him out of the last few preseason games. The Chargers are being cautious with Bosa, but the hope is that he will be fully recovered by Week 1.
4. Preseason Surprises and Disappointments
Surprise Teams: The Atlanta Falcons have exceeded expectations in the preseason, with their young roster showing significant improvement. Quarterback Desmond Ridder has looked sharp, and the defense has made strides under new coordinator Brian Flores.
Disappointments: The Denver Broncos have struggled to find offensive rhythm, and concerns about their quarterback situation persist. Russell Wilson has faced criticism for inconsistent play, and the coaching staff is working diligently to address these issues before the regular season.
5. Looking Ahead
As the preseason draws to a close, teams are finalizing their rosters and preparing for the regular season. The focus will soon shift to finalizing strategies and game plans for the upcoming year. Fans can look forward to the season opener, which promises to deliver the high drama and excitement that the NFL is known for.
Stay tuned for more updates as the 2024 NFL season gets underway. With key injuries, rookie performances, and quarterback battles at the forefront, this season is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing yet.

Sonic Youth - The Ogden Theater, Denver, Colorado, October 4, 2010
The #SonicSummer Expressway has almost reached its terminus ... and indeed, this great audience tape from Denver features the final performance of "Expressway To Yr Skull," one of Sonic Youth's finest creations. Au revoir, California Girls! This was also where I said goodbye to the band — it was the last time I saw them play! An unwitting farewell ... if I had known it was all coming to an end, I would've been shedding some tears on Colfax that evening, savoring every last dissonant note.
As it stands, shows from around this time are a little hazy for me; I was a sleep-deprived dad of a one-year-old. But I do remember being amazed to see Thurston break out the acoustic guitar for a long, brooding "Massage The History." Here was a band that still had some new tricks up its sleeve! I also loved that I got a shredding version of "Mote," a tune I'd never seen SY play previously. The Eternal material was very nice too — it was great to see how Steve Shelley powered the whole thing, leading everyone through tricky segues, tempo changes and dynamic shifts. Steve rules!
It's the two encores, however, that really get me going as I listen back to the recording. First, a heaping portion of Daydream Nation via the vortex of "The Wonder / Hyperstation." Then, a haunting train trip through the unconscious on "Shadow of a Doubt." And finally, the aforementioned "Expressway," which takes a minute to get its bearings, but then explodes into the sublime.

A Night at the NCO Club
*For Bobweek2023, Day 3, Story from song lyrics. The title of my story came from the second song performed in this chapter by my OC, Leigh Spencer, "I Double Dare You."
Tumblr media
*Author's note: For those who haven't seen the first chapter of my story, Leigh is 19 years old. She's shapely and trim, 5'4", with shoulder length curly brown hair and green eyes. Bill Guarnere, while filming the documentary, "A Company of Heroes," said that Sobel, "Didn't know his ass from a hole in the ground. Bill said in the book he wrote with Babe Heffron, that when he saw Frannie, his future wife, for the first time, he knew that he would marry her someday.
When the former neighbor of Wild Bill was carrying a heavy case of sound equipment into his home while her husband carried a video camera to do an interview on YouTube, Guarnere raised his voice, asking the neighbor's husband,
"What the hell is wrong with you? She shouldn't be carrying that heavy stuff! A woman is like a delicate flower. You respect and protect her." The husband immediately apologized.Guarnere often used the word "scallywag" instead of scalawag.
The song I posted with this story actually came from the 1940s.*
***********************************************************************
After a hectic five days of office work, the weekend began. Leigh and Melissa were looking forward to hearing a small swing ensemble that was performing at the camp's NCO Club. It was also Leigh's birthday and Melissa wanted to buy a drink or two and help her best friend celebrate.
Since this was a special event, the club had relaxed its officers only policy. Adams and Spencer had made a trip into town to find some nice, but relatively inexpensive clothes to wear to the club
Leigh selected a short sleeved red sweater that was form fitting but not too tight. She also selected a charcoal gray skirt that was slightly flared for dancing and a pair of charcoal gray open toe high heeled sling back pumps.
Adams bought a blue dress with a sweetheart neckline, which displayed just a hint of cleavage and blue low heeled pumps. She was hoping to attract the attention of Easy Company paratrooper in training Denver "Bull" Randleman. Melissa didn't feel the need for high heels since she was 5'10" and she disliked towering over a man.
Leigh finished applying her favorite lipstick, Victory Red. She was hoping that Bill Guarnere would be at the club. Spencer enjoyed spending time with Guarnere, but she politely declined a Friday night date with him. She was haunted by something Grayson told her the year before that hurt her deeply.
It was easier to keep the hurtful words at bay when she wasn't interested in dating. Leigh wondered if Bill would be interested in dating her if he knew about her past. She felt that she could trust Guarnere.
He treated her with respect from the moment they met. Spencer was determined to banish the negative thoughts and have a good time at the NCO club. She picked up the purse she was issued with her WAAC uniform. It clashed with her shoes, but it would have to do.
Leigh and Melissa left the women's barracks and made the short walk to the club. Both women entered the club and got a table close to the small dance floor. They were both disappointed. Neither Easy Company man they sought was present. They hoped that Bull and Bill would show up later.
Melissa decided on a glass of beer while Leigh chose the popular Cuba Libre, also known as a rum and Coke. They sipped their drinks while they listened to the swing band playing the latest hits. About an hour into the first set, the band leader took a moment to apologize to the audience. The vocalist who was supposed to perform with them had to cancel due to laryngitis.
"If any lady in the audience could sing a few tunes, it would help us out tremendously," the band leader remarked. Melissa asked the band leader, "Do y'all play any country music? I can sing quite a few of those songs" The disappointed band leader had to refuse Melissa's request to perform. Adams spoke up again, "My friend is a good singer. I am always tellin' her that she is good enough to be on the radio."
"Would you care to try a number or two?" the now hopeful band leader asked Leigh. She decided to give it a try as she asked, "What would you like me to sing? " After conferring with the musicians, the band leader asked Leigh if she knew "Blues In the Night." "I know it, but I can't guarantee that I will sound as good as Dinah Shore." She asked the band leader if he knew her favorite song, "I Double Dare You." The band leader said that the song was one that the band knew.
The drummer got up from his drum kit and placed the tall microphone on a small space by the piano.Leigh began the first song. By the time she was midway through, conversations in the club had ceased and the audience was enthralled, enjoying her singing.
Spencer received loud applause, which surprised her. She thought, "It's nice, but I really didn't do a very good job with that number." The band played the intro to "I Double Dare You." As they continued the long instrumental, Leigh saw Bill Guarnere entering the club.
She smiled when she saw that he was by himself. He found a seat at an empty table not far from where Melissa was sitting. Leigh decided to flirt a little and she looked directly at Guarnere and began singing,
"I double dare you to sit over here. I double dare you to lend me your ear. Take off your high hat and let's get friendly. Don't be a scared cat. Hey, what do you care? Can't you take a dare? I double dare you to kiss me and then, I double dare you to kiss me again. And if that look in your eyes means what I'm thinking of I double dare you to fall in love with me. I double dare you."
youtube
The band played another lengthy instrumental. Leigh was grinning. She saw Guarnere wink at her. Somehow, he managed to make this outwardly innocent gesture feel sexy. Bill couldn't take his eyes off of her. Spencer began singing,
"I double dare you to kiss me and then, I double dare you to kiss me again. And if that look in your eyes means what I'm thinking of, I double dare you to fall in love with me. I double dare you." She received loud applause from the audience .
Leigh thanked the audience and the band leader. She was planning on heading to her seat at the table, but she saw that Melissa had disappeared. Before she could look for her friend, Spencer felt a hand on her shoulder. She was pleasantly surprised when she turned around and saw Bill. He spoke first, " Could we go someplace to talk? It's kinda noisy in here." Guarnere noticed that Leigh had been looking at the empty table where Melissa had been sitting. "Your friend is talkin' to my buddy, Bull. Ain't nothin' to worry about, he's a nice fella. As I was sayin', could we go someplace to talk?"
Leigh had to stand close to Bill to make herself heard over the noise. She got on her tip toes, trying to get close to his ear. Guarnere realized that even with her wearing high heels, he would have to bend down due to Spencer being short. "Yes, I know the perfect place. I have the keys to the building where I work and I have my office key, too. Now, how do we get through this crowd?"
Bill took her hand, "Just hold on to me, I can get us through." Spencer enjoyed having her hand held by Bill. Their fingers intertwined as Guarnere slowly navigated through the crowd. He told the people blocking his way, "Comin' through." If the crowd didn't move fast enough he changed tactics saying,
"Let the lady through, c'mon! " A particularly inebriated group of men tried Bill's patience as they moved about an inch and then started talking. Guarnere was trying extremely hard not to lose his temper in front of Leigh. He tapped one of the drunk men on the shoulder with his free hand, telling him, "Hey, buddy, tell your pals that (he pronounced the word as 'dat') they're givin' away free bottles o' beer at the bar. " The young man's eyes lit up with excitement as he quickly told his friends the good news. The group disbanded and made a sprint to the bar.
Bill chuckled to himself as he watched the group disappear into the crowd. He held the door open for Leigh and he exited the club behind her. Once they were outside, Spencer asked,
"What did you tell that guy to get him to move the entire herd out of the way?" "I gave that scallywag a friendly tip about the bar givin' away free bottles o' beer." He held her hand while they strolled down the walkway. Leigh laughed,
"I like the way you think. We have to be very careful getting into the office. I think using the back door would be safer. We would have our asses in big trouble if the MPs saw us." Guarnere smirked at her choice of words and and assured her, " Don't worry about that, Doll. I can be your lookout while you get the door open. " Leigh felt completely at ease with Bill. "My partner in crime." "You know it, Doll. I don't break inta offices wit' just any broad." Spencer laughed at this remark from Bill, "I have keys, so it isn't technically a break in. What kind of broad do you usually chose for breaking and entering?" Guarnere couldn't help but laugh at her remark. He thought,
"She's really somethin' an' spunky, too. I like that." Bill answered, "I'm takin' the fifth amendment on that," "Smart choice." She stopped and pointed to a large white building. "We have arrived. All we need to do is get to the back entrance." Bill let her lead him around to the back of the building. This area wasn't illuminated by a great deal of light. "I need to get into my purse so I can get the key. I didn't want you to think that..." she looked at their hands. "It's OK, Doll. I know what you mean. " He let go of her hand, "I think I'll have a smoke." Guarnere offered her a cigarette and she politely refused. A few minutes later, they were inside the office.
"Bill, " she asked, " would you please use your lighter? It would be easier to find my office if I could see. We need to go down the hall and take a left turn at the next corridor." Bill removed the cigarette from his mouth to answer her. He exhaled the smoke, "Sure thing. Just a second."
He took Spencer's hand,
"I don't want ya runnin' inta anythin' in the dark. Leigh, do ya know where I can find an ashtray?" "Bill, I'm sorry, but all of the small ashtrays are in the other offices. My keys are only for the front and back doors, plus my office." Guarnere noticed a tall metal ashtray filled with sand that was close to Spencer.
He stubbed out the cigarette, turning down the next corridor and stopping at the locked office door. Leigh was ready to open the door, having placed the office key in her hand while they were still outdoors. Guarnere held the lighter close enough for her to see the lock and insert the key. He pushed the door open for Leigh, allowing her to enter the small room first. "Bill, would you please come over this way so I can see to get into my desk? There's a flashlight in the top drawer. We could have a little more light that way." Guarnere walked ahead of Leigh, lighting the way to her desk,
She thanked him, opened the drawer and took out the flashlight. Turning it on, she went past Bill to stand in front of her desk.
"There's only one chair. Would you rather just sit on top of the desk with me?" Guarnere flipped the lighter case closed and sat on the desk. Spencer sat beside him. She looked for a good place to put the flashlight to give them the best light and decided to put it on top of the filing cabinet across from her.Bill looked around the small room,
"Is it always this crowded in here? They don't hardly give ya room to walk." "No. This is thanks to that numb nuts Sobel. Sorry, there goes my irrepressible mouth again." Guarnere burst out laughing, "Oh, Christ! That's a good one, Doll. Do ya work for that bastard?" He was chuckling, repeating in a softer voice,
"Numb nuts Sobel. That's fuckin' perfect." Bill immediately apologized to her, "There goes my big mouth, so that makes us even." Leigh giggled, " No, and I sincerely thank God that I don't work for him. I normally do some work for Colonel Sink. My friend Melissa's grandma died two weeks ago and I got assigned to her duties while she was on leave. Sobel made such a fuss to have the extra filing cabinets brought in, but he's not in a hurry to get them out of here." Bill frowned and replied with derision,
"Don't surprise me one bit. I'm tellin' ya, that son of a bitch don't know his ass from a hole in the ground." "I got that impression about five minutes into my first day of working for him. Speaking of the black swan, if you mention what I called him, please don't tell your buddies that I was the one who came up with his new name. He could make my life a living hell." "Don't worry, I won't get ya into any trouble wit' Sobel." Bill decided to address the issue at hand,
"I might as well get to the point. You've been givin' me mixed signals. Sometimes ya act interested, but ya turned me down for a date Did I do or say somethin' wrong?" Leigh sighed, "You aren't the problem. It's me." Bill frowned and looked puzzled, "Are ya tryin' to not hurt my feelins? This sounds like a way to let me down easy." Spencer quickly answered, "No, it's nothing like that, Bill ." Guarnere felt relieved at the possibility of still having a chance with Leigh. "The reason why I've been hesitant about you comes from something that happened last year. It's why I went into the WAACs, I knew they would provide a safe place for me to live and work."
She began telling Bill about Grayson. As he listened, Guarnere felt anger building inside him as Leigh told him about the other woman and the events that led to her breaking the engagement and leaving O'Brian. "When I tried to leave his apartment, Gray locked the door." She then told about how O'Brian became angry, slamming her against the door and then grabbing her left arm. "I had a bruise on my back and big bruise on my arm that remained on me for a few weeks. Don't get me wrong, I don't condone violence, but I was infuriated and my back hurt. I reacted to the pain and slapped his face hard enough to leave my hand print."
She told Bill about Grayson punching her, giving her a black eye and knocking her to the floor. Guarnere slammed his hand down on the desk, his voice was loud, "That son of a bitch! If I knew where he was, I'd beat the livin' hell outta him, I swear to God! My pop told all us boys that you don't NEVER hit a woman. He told us that if we blew our top, go take a walk or somethin'. Pop always says, 'A woman is a delicate flower. You show her respect an' protect her. A man who hits a woman ain't a man at all.'" He put his hands on Spencer's shoulders, gently turning her toward him so she could look into his eyes. Guarnere took both of her hands in his, telling her, "You done nothin' wrong, Baby, and you didn't deserve what he done to you. You understand me? " Leigh was momentarily silenced by Bill's gentle touch and his words.
"Yes." Guarnere felt that there was more to her story and that it was equally upsetting as what she had told him. "That ain't all, is it ? How did you get out o'there?" Spencer told Bill about how she pretended to give Grayson another chance and the ruse of wanting to fix her makeup in order to get closer to the bedroom and the window. Guarnere commented, "You got a good head on your shoulders, Leigh." Then, she told of locking the door behind her, kicking out the screen and how O'Brian fired a gun, almost hitting her. Spencer told of her mad dash, practically barefoot in the pouring rain and jumping into the police car stopped at a red light
Since he was holding Leigh's hands,Bill kicked the desk with the heel of his boot, enraged when he heard about O'Brian firing the gun. He shouted, "Son of a bitch! I could kill that bastard for what he done to you!" Guarnere imagined Leigh terrified and running for her life. This made him want to ensure that no one would ever hurt her again.
"Sorry 'bout that. I'll keep it down, we don't need no MPs after us." Spencer decided to go for broke and tell Bill everything, "I'm not judging you in the least, but I think there are two types of girls you date. The first types are very experienced girls who aren't shy about wanting to have sex. The second types are good girls, the ones you would take home to meet your folks. I don't fit into either category."
Guarnere was amazed at the accuracy of her assessment. He chuckled softly, "You're right. You must be a mind reader." Bill had a puzzled look on his face as he listened to Leigh saying that she didn't fit in either category. He added,
"Baby, you are a good girl. What makes you think you ain't good?" Spencer looked down as she replied, "I planned to wait until I was married to...but Grayson said it was OK because we were engaged. It only happened once and it was over pretty fast. I don't understand what all the fuss is about." Bill held back the urge to laugh at her remark, not wanting to hurt her feelings, but he smirked,
"It's because he didn't do it right." "Gray never touched me after that. I guess he got what he wanted and moved on to the next woman or women. When I asked him why he wasn't interested in me anymore," Spencer's voice was breaking, "he...he said that I was damaged goods that no one would want. That's why I broke that date with you.
Now that you know the whole story, I understand if you aren't interested. You have a heart of gold and you deserve a good woman." Leigh felt her eyes filling with tears that she couldn't control. Guarnere saw the tears flowing down her face in the dim light. The dejected look on Spencer's face caused Bill to say, in a very soft and tender voice, "Oh, Sweetheart," He wrapped his arms around Leigh, pulling her close to him. Bill stroked her back, soothing her. Guarnere held Spencer with one hand while he got a handkerchief from a pocket in his dress uniform and gently wiped the tears from her face.
Bill asked if she needed to use the handkerchief. Leigh thanked him and turned away from Guarnere to blow her nose. She put the used handkerchief behind her on the desk. Spencer's voice was breaking as she told Bill, "I'll get this washed and returned to you. Damn it! This is embarrassing. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to ruin your evening."
"Don't worry about it, I can get it back later. You didn't ruin nothin'. Baby, you are a good woman. You're a sweet angel." He wrapped his arms around Leigh again and resumed stroking her back as Spencer returned his embrace, feeling comfort in snuggling close to Bill.
Holding Leigh felt so right to him. Guarnere thought,
"I wish I could hold this little doll all night." He placed a tender kiss on the top of her head. Guarnere tilted Spencer's head up with one finger under her chin, looking into her eyes as he told her, "You ain't damaged, Leigh. Any man who thinks that is a goddamned fool. You're a smart, beautiful woman. You're funny an' you sure as hell don't take no guff from anybody."
Bill paused to gently brush back a strand of her hair that was hanging over her right eye, He continued, "On top o' that, ya sing like an angel. Baby, you're somethin' else, really special.
Don't never forget that. You're more to me than just a night or two wit' some broad I picked up at the NCO club or the joints in town. That's why I wanted to find out how ya felt about me." Leigh was hoping she didn't misunderstand what Bill just said.
"In other words, you want me to be your girl? " Guarnere couldn't say what he was thinking, "If I tell her, she'll think I'm nuts, but I know that I'm gonna marry her someday. Pop felt that way about Ma from the very beginnin'." Instead, he replied, "Yes, Baby. I want ya to be my girl. How 'bout it?" Spencer smiled, "Yes. By the way, you're the first man I've been interested in since last year." Bill put his hands on either side of Leigh's face and gave her a sweet, gentle kiss.
"Sweetheart, you just made me a happy man. I'm honored to be the first man ya got interested in after that livin' nightmare." He kissed Spencer again, gently at first. She wrapped her arms around his neck. Guarnere deepened the kiss and Leigh ran her fingers through his hair.
When Bill parted her lips with his tongue, she sighed into his mouth, allowing his tongue to enter her mouth. He began tracing his fingers down her back. Leigh froze in place when she heard the front door of the building open. Reluctantly breaking the kiss, she remarked,
"Damn it! I forgot about the MP doing a security check. He has lousy timing!" She got off of the desk, quickly ensuring that the office door was locked, grabbed her purse and turned off the flashlight. Bill grabbed the flashlight and followed her behind her desk.
The footsteps in the hall grew louder until the MP stopped in front of the door to Spencer's office. Once the officer realized the door was locked, he checked the back door and found it was also locked. The MP walked to the front door and exited the building, locking the door behind him.
Bill and Leigh got up from behind the desk. Spencer placed the flashlight in the desk drawer and made sure the drawer was closed. Guarnere wrapped his arms around Leigh, kissing her. "As much as I wanna go back to what were doin' before the MP showed up, we need to get the hell outta here before he comes back." Leigh agreed and they exited the office. She locked the office door.
Guarnere used his lighter to help them navigate to the back door. Once it was unlocked, he opened the door for Leigh to exit first. She paused to lock the back door. They strolled hand in hand to the walkway. "Let me walk ya back to the barracks, Sweetheart. You should't walk back by yourself."
Bill paused for a moment to get the pack of cigarettes out of his pocket, taking one cigarette and his lighter. He put the cigarette in his mouth and lit it. Then, he put the lighter back in his pocket. Leigh told him, "I wouldn't want it any other way." Bill put his arm around her shoulders as they walked to the women's quarters. They took the long route to the barracks. When they arrived at the building, Guarnere got rid of the cigarette, dropping the remains of it on the gravel path, stepping on it to ensure it was out.
He pulled Spencer close to him, wrapping his arms around her as he gave her a passionate kiss. Leigh moaned softly as Guarnere's tongue entered her mouth. They exchanged slow, sensual kisses. Leigh caressed Bill's back. He broke the kiss, whispering to Spencer,
"Is this gettin' my baby worked up?" He nibbled on her ear, and kissed her neck. Bill delighted in hearing Leigh moaning softly. "Oh, yes! I love the way you kiss. Something tells me you're very good at other things, too." Bill replied, playfully raising his eyebrows, "That so?" "I don't know that for a fact, but I'd like to find out sometime." Guarnere chuckled, kissing the top of her head. He gave Spencer a tender kiss, "Any time you're ready, you just tell me, OK? If ya need more time, I can wait until you're ready. Ain't no reason for me to chase after other broads when I have an angel like you. I ain't just sayin' that, either. " "I promise to let you know when I'm ready. Bill, you're so considerate. I'm lucky to have a nice guy like you." Guarnere gave Spencer a tender kiss,
"You made me a happy man tonight, Baby. I'd better call it a night. I'll see ya sometime later today, that is if ya don't already have plans."
"Sounds like I will plan to see a handsome sergeant who just happens to be my guy." Guarnere gave her another passionate kiss, " Goodnight, Baby. See ya later today. Leigh told Bill goodnight and she went into the building . Guarnere headed back to the Easy Company barracks.

Okay time to clown about the Starlight performance 🤡
During the performance of Starlight during Denver night 2 on the screens the camera intentionally cuts to a view that shows the number 7 in the crowd i believe 4 times. (I check a few videos and it seems like 4 but please tell me if I miscounted)
Regardless one particular time (the 2nd time) the 7 is caught on camera is in this clip below after she sings “ooo ooo we could get married. Have ten kids and teach em how to dream.”
Most notably is that the 7 is backwards. Which could imply minus 7 from 15 which gives you 8. Then she goes on to perform Back to December on piano which is a track 3. Which is 8/3 Karlie’s birthday.
I just want to note I noticed the 7 in the crowd while I was watching a live stream so it wasn’t just this video or angle. It was on the screen.
Tumblr media
Just for extra clownery 🤡 I’m going to point out what she says during the other times it cuts to the 7
The 1st time is after she sings “look at you worrying too much about things you can’t change. You’ll spend your whole life singing the blues if you keep thinking that way.” And until she sings “he was trying to skip rocks on the ocean saying to me.”
The 2nd time is discussed above.
The 3rd time is while she sings “we were dancing dancing” into the last “oh my what a marvelous tune” (felt reminiscing of DWOHT)
“The 4th time is while she sings the last “Don’t you see the starlight” before the end of the song.
And for the final clown 🤡 bit
The number of times it cuts to the 7 added to 7
7+4=11

Stay With Me — VoicePlay music video
youtube
During the first Sing-Off tour, the ever-creative guys of VoicePlay were collecting footage for a number of video projects that they edited and released over the following months. So naturally, on the second tour, they recorded and mixed a new song, then filmed and completed an entire video for it before they even got home. It's a good thing that the song in question is such a relaxing groove.
Details:
title: Stay With Me
original performer: Sam Smith
written by: Sam Smith, James "Jimmy Napes" Napier, William "Tourist" Phillips, Tom Petty, & Jeff Lynne
arranged by: Layne Stein
release date: 23 April 2015
My favorite bits:
the lowkey reggae twist they put on the arrangement
such lovely harmonies through the whole thing
Earl's rainfall of a riff on ♫ "clear to see" ♫ in the choruses
the smooth crescendo on ♫ "there's ne-e-ver words" ♫
Layne's bouncy percussion run leading into the second chorus
how much emotion they put into the bridge, even without lyrics
Geoff's velvety solo, letting a little extra Southern slip in on that ♫ "darlin'" ♫
the gorgeous four-part harmony leading into a beautiful final chord
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trivia:
VoicePlay had previously recorded an excerpt from this song as part of their "Aca Top 10 — Summer Hits 2014" countdown.
This song was part of VoicePlay's pre-show VIP set during the 2015 Sing-Off tour. Singing a tune every night for a month and a half is a pretty good rehearsal process.
The video was filmed on the streets of Denver while they were in town for the tour. Not even on a day off. They still performed a full show that night. (Though the next day was a travel day, so they could rest up a little on the bus.)
The fact that they released it the day after they got home from the Sing-Off tour garnered praise from musical director Deke Sharon.

Article about Marshmallow Coast and interview with Andy Gonzales in Flagpole, 14 April 2004
[source]
transcript:
The Reluctance of being earnest Marshmallow Coast's Andy Gonzales moves towards a sharper picture of himself Andy Gonzales is looking to define himself, and he's been doing it for a while. To be more specific, he's looking to have his Marshmallow Coast identity and music exist outside the realm of his more acclaimed association. In fact, when I call to ask him about the recording of his recent album Antistar, he brings up Of Montreal right off the bat and without any prompting.
"We recorded [Antistar] with Jason NeSmith at Bel Air Studios," says Gonzales, "and it basically... well. I felt like I needed to record an album completely disassociated from Of Montreal. All the [Of Montreal] reviews would mention Kevin [Barnes, Of Montreal's primary songwriter and frontman] and not mention me.
That was pretty much my only thing to consider in the recording of this album, so I didn't want to include any of those people. That just got under my skin after a while—not that it created hard feelings, of course, but it was time to really be on my own."
Don't let Gonzales come across as bitter— he's not. But he does carry the air of someone frustrated with being overshadowed. Antistar, however, should aid in further separating Marshmallow Coast from Of Montreal's quirky pop preciousness. The album is Gonzales' fourth as Marshmallow Coast, a name he's used since his early teenage years in Denver. It's also his most distinct album to date. Marshmallow Coast's 1999 debut album Seniors and Juniors came across like an off-key and lo- fi love letter to Music Tapes' Julian Koster (also of Neutral Milk Hotel), and 2000's Marshmailow Coasting carried a strong Of Montreal sound— not surprising, since the majority of that band showed up to back Gonzales.
But with 2002's Ride the Lightning, which marked the jump from Kindercore Records to Misra Records, Gonzales started to gain his own foothold. Of the label switch, Gonzales says: "Kindercore was totally changing, and I kinda had a weird inkling that I needed to leave, but it wasn't anything other than I needed to be on a different label than Of Montreal, because that was the height of the comparison."
Antistar finds Gonzales exploring his troubadour side, turning away the more psychedelic whimsy experiments of earlier albums, instead relying on tunes more in line with the steady output of standards coming from Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello, albeit with a Sean Lennon voice and a Jonathan Richman sense of humor. Love songs—romantic love songs populate Antistar. Says Gonzales: "Everybody feels love, and I just... more than being lovey-dovey, I try to make my songs about weirdoes who find love mysteriously. I think it's more classy to write about love, and I definitely don't have anything political to say." The album was recorded primarily in the solo setting, and Marshmallow Coast's live performance reflects that; it's Gonzales and wife Sara Kirkpatrick, who married recently in Dekalb County, accompanied by a CD for all the backing tracks and drums.
"My songwriting process has kind of evolved," says Gonzales. "It used to be that I'd just wait for inspiration, but eventually I'd just work on little bits and pieces and see how they fit together over time. Now I'm at the point where I can get my brain into writing mode when I'm in the studio recording—I might go in with just six songs, and that's not enough for a full album, so I'll write some out of sheer necessity. Some of those songs have become some of my favorites, because I'm not super-prolific like some other people are. If I tell myself I've got something to accomplish and I'm not wasting somebody's time, I can get things done. But it can be difficult."
Again, Gonzales slips comfortably into self-doubt an apologetic tone for even existing in the first place. He seems uncomfortable with his own place in the creation of music. To wit:
Andy Gonzales: By this point I just [write songs] and we don't really feel like we'll change the world or anything. Flagpole: No? AG: Not really. Sometimes I don't know why I do it. I think about all the other hundreds of bands who recorded their CDs and spent all that money in the studio and... I dunno. I guess there is a reason. FP: What is that reason? AG: Because I like doing music, and there are some people who seem to like it I mean, I totally love making music, but I've given up the romantic notion I held as a teenager that we're gonna be big or something. But there's somebody willing to put the record out, so I'll definitely have the songs ready, I guess... I mean, I would love for us to get recognition as a unique or different band, but I am happy with the recognition we've got so far.
But again, it seems to be the constant scrutiny and comparison to his musical elders that's led to Gonzales' reticence and his reluctance to take a strong stand on his own music. "The weird thing is," he says, "I've had the luxury to turn into something while people were able to watch and scrutinize. Most people might not put out their first album until they're my age now, until they've really developed as an artist and are ready to be out there. I've kind of been developing in the public eye."
Is that ever an uncomfortable situation? "I think it was in the beginning," says Gonzales, "because I'm not a very good singer, but now I think... I don't know how much consideration I give it anymore. I just want to make something really, um, pretty? Y'know, just music that's nice. I feel that if I evolve in any other way I'll try to get somebody else to sing because that's where I run into the most criticism."
But does Gonzales like his own voice? "Yeah. Sometimes? I don't know." It seems that Gonzales' strength, then, is to let the songs speak for themselves as well as for him. Despite his self-questioning, Antistar takes a strong stand towards romance and pushes Gonzales further towards definition.

Pavement - Glad I'm Not Dead
Pavement recently wrapped up a tour of Japan/Australia/New Zealand — and the reunion rolls on, with some festival dates coming up and a residency in Iceland. Not sure if they'll make it out to my neck of the woods in 2023 (who wants to pay for me to go to Iceland though???), but I'd love to catch them again — the Denver show was incredibly fun.
In the meantime, let's dig into this fantastic Anazgnos compilation "personally selected from favorite performances via fan-sourced, freely shared audience recordings." The entire repertoire — 59 songs! — is represented here. What didn't they play this time around? I feel like "Rattled By The Rush" is one of the major missing tunes, but you gotta appreciate that Pavement really dug deep into the catalog this time around.
And hey, as I mentioned last year, I was honored/privileged/shocked to be asked to contribute a little essay to Pavement's official tour program. Since that piece of merch appears to be sold out, here's that little essay ...
“What does it mean, a mistake or two?” Stephen Malkmus asked in the dead center of Slanted and Enchanted, Pavement’s 1992 debut LP. Thirty years later, it still feels like the defining question of the band’s career. From their scratchy early singles to the more polished surfaces of Terror Twilight, Pavement’s albums and live performances were filled with what, for other groups, might be called mistakes. Think of how 1994’s Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain kicks off: a cacophony of jumbled notes, off-kilter rhythms and room noise — all before launching into the majestic preamble of “Silence Kid,” the pieces magically falling into place. Think of how that same LP ends, cutting off abruptly mid-verse, incomplete but somehow completely satisfying. Pavement famously called one of their first EPs Perfect Sound Forever, but perfection was never the point. A mistake (or two) could be just as beautiful.
“Honor thy error as a hidden intention” was one of those semi-mystical koans found in Brian Eno’s legendary Oblique Strategies way back in the 1970s. In some ways, it’s an artist’s “Get Out Of Jail Free” card, saying that an accident can be framed in any he or she likes. But over the course of a decade, intentionally or not, Pavement went even further, building an entire aesthetic identity around finding the meaning in mistakes, in seemingly random lyrical connections, in opposing impulses. After all, this is a band whose breakthrough hit — “Cut Your Hair” — was a song that dealt honestly (and humorously) with the fear of having a breakthrough hit. Contradiction and complexity are the hallmarks of our age — why shouldn’t they be reflected in our music? It might be this tension that keeps Pavement relevant after all these years, with new audiences falling in love with the group, and a hotly anticipated 2022 reunion tour that sees them playing on larger stages than ever before. (Well, that and all the sweet guitar action and impossibly hook-y choruses that send you ba-ba-ba-da-ing into the night.)
“They need to try harder!” complained one of our finest music critics — a cartoon teen known only as Butt-Head — about Pavement. It was a common assertion back in the 1990s, especially when it came to the band’s live shows, with the dreaded “S” word being thrown around liberally. And sure, if you talk to anyone who caught them during their initial run, they’ll tell you about the false-starts and fuckups, the time original drummer Gary Young stopped the show to perform a drunken headstand, or the unpredictable technical difficulties that might have arisen. (True story: the first time I saw Pavement — the Hollywood Palace, September 15, 1994 — curls of ominous smoke began rising from Malkmus’ amp in the middle of the set. It was hard to tell whether SM thought this gear malfunction was frustrating or hilarious. Probably both.) But don’t be misled. Amidst the hijinks, a Pavement gig was, much more often than not, a glorious thing, offering an openness and pure flow that most bands of the era lacked entirely. Here was a rock band that eschewed rock god moves and poses, instead casually inviting fans into a musical universe that could be heavy as a thundercloud or as fun as the most fun day of your life — sometimes within the space of a single song. That welcoming spirit can still be found whenever and wherever Pavement steps onstage. The opening line of “Grave Architecture” said it all: “Come on in.”

Signs That Your Workplace Priorities Are Changing
Signs That Your Workplace Priorities Are Changing https://ift.tt/ft6Fvgl Have you ever felt like something’s different at work, but you can’t quite put your finger on it? The vibe in the office has shifted, or your boss is suddenly interested in projects they never cared about before. These subtle changes could be hints that your workplace priorities are evolving. Let’s explore some telltale signs that things might change at your job. When fresh blood joins the management team, new faces in leadership roles often bring new ideas and goals. Look for unfamiliar faces in high-level meetings or announcements about new hires in key positions. These newcomers might shake things up and introduce different priorities. The sudden focus on specific metrics: If your team meetings suddenly revolve around numbers or KPIs rarely mentioned before, it’s a clear sign of shifting priorities. Customer satisfaction scores are now the hot topic, or everyone’s obsessing over cost-cutting measures. This new emphasis hints at changing company goals. Changes in budget allocations: Money talks and where it’s being spent can tell you a lot about what’s essential to your organization. Are specific departments getting more funding while others are tightening their belts? This could indicate a shift in focus and priorities. Reorganization of teams or departments: When companies shuffle their organizational charts, it’s usually because they’re trying to align their structure with new objectives. If you notice teams being combined, split up, or moved around, it’s a good bet that priorities are changing. New training programs or skill development initiatives: Has your company suddenly started offering workshops on topics it’s never covered before? Or is it pushing everyone to learn a new software or methodology? This investment in specific skills shows what the company values and where it’s headed. Shift in company communication: Pay attention to the language used in company-wide emails, meetings, or even casual conversations with higher-ups. If a new buzzword or phrase is frequently used, it might point to evolving priorities. Changes in performance evaluations: When the criteria for success at your job start to look different, it’s a clear sign that priorities have shifted. You may suddenly be graded on teamwork more than individual output, or innovation is trumping efficiency. Altered meeting schedules or attendees: Are you invited to (or cut out of) meetings you weren’t invited to before? Changes in who’s in the room and what’s being discussed can signal new directions for the company. Different treatment of clients or customers: If you notice a shift in how your company interacts with clients – focusing more on certain types of customers or changing service levels – it could indicate new priorities regarding growth or market focus. Adjustments to work schedules or policies Sometimes, changing priorities show up in the day-to-day details of work life. A sudden push for more remote work or a shift in core hours might reflect new company values or goals. Recognizing these signs can help you stay ahead of the curve and adapt to your company’s evolving needs. It’s always wise to keep your finger on the pulse of your workplace – after all, being in tune with your company’s priorities can help you thrive in your role and grow in your career. So keep your eyes and ears open, and you’ll be well-prepared for whatever changes come your way.
