"A season that brought the best out of the best" Motorsport Magazine, February 2025 Issue, by Mark Hughes
We've seen plenty of demonstrations of Max Verstappen brilliance on his way to a fourth straight title this season. But has he become a yet-greater driver in '24? Yes. But not because of what he's done in the car; that's always been remarkable. Rather, in a challenging combination of circumstances where it would have been very easy for the whole team to have come undone, he has been the glue. He couldn't have been that if his power was not underwritten by the enormity of his talent. It was on display this season just as always – the virtuosity of dancing through the Interlagos rain, the steely focus of keeping a closely chasing McLaren from getting within DRS reach for 30 laps in Qatar, the technical perfection of Suzuka, the defensive masterclass of Imola, etc. But the circumstances he found himself in this season brought out a leader. At 27 years old he's no longer only the dazzling hurricane of speed and ambition. No longer only someone so driven, drilled and practiced that he’s virtually unbeatable in an equal car. No longer only someone of which his friend and Formula 1 driver coach Atze Kerkhof says is as good as he is, "because of a brilliant natural talent and millions of hours of training. He’s only got better. The rough edges have gone and now he’s like a machine. You cannot beat him." No, Max Verstappen is more even than all that now. A driver in their tenth F1 season doesn't get faster. They can possibly access their best stuff more consistently. But he's been doing that almost perfectly for seven seasons now, a remarkable achievement in itself. So where has he got better? Circumstances have demanded an extra dimension from him – and he's delivered it. But in a way which has not buried him, which still allows him his easy delineation between racing and home, keeping his mind perfectly uncluttered to focus on performance.
He prepared like never before for the new season, as team boss Christian Horner revealed at Suzuka in April. "He changed trainer over the winter. He's fit and lean. You can hear how much spare capacity he has in the car. He wants to know not just who's behind him, but who is behind them as well and what times are they doing. He's become very astute at managing the tyre. The way he managed to extend the tyre life here [at the Japanese Grand Prix] was so impressive."
But that's just a detail, a polishing-up. The leadership dimension came from the circumstances of Red Bull's season. Specifically the strains arising from the controversy surrounding the Horner internal investigation in the early season. Then the car's mid-season competitive decline.
The serenity in the cockpit at the start of 2024, as Verstappen continued from where he'd left off in his dominant '23 campaign, was very much in contrast to how things were in the team as the Horner controversy about the employee complaint against him played out and Max's father Jos got involved, opposing the team boss, campaigning for him to be ousted.
The way Max dealt with the powerplay, which also involved Helmut Marko, the man who had almost single-handedly brought him to F1, was illuminating. He did not align himself with Jos, stayed on good terms with him but went his own way. He did state his unambiguously firm support of Marko – "If he goes, then so do I" – so sending an implicit message to Horner not to overplay his hand.
But then he helped bring calm equilibrium back, just continued with the competitive imperative and remained civilised with everyone, Horner included.
"What I know is that this team doesn’t give up," said Verstappen after clinching the title in Las Vegas. "There are a lot of very confident people and I really enjoy working with them. I know there was a lot of pressure on them. When you come out of a season like last year where we broke every record and then start to struggle to understand what is going wrong, it's important to remain calm as you try to fix it. Every person in the team has their own emotions which you have to deal with. It's also people-management – because everyone acts in different ways to good results or bad results. But that's something I enjoy as well. Because we all have our own character but we all have to work together to the same end goal and I'm proud of how we stuck together through those races where we were a bit lost."
As Jos was saying that Horner remaining would tear the team apart, Max was ensuring that it wouldn't. Probably this didn't come as much of a surprise to his mother, Sophie Kumpen, the former top-class karter who provided much of his genetic make-up. "Max will always want to solve things first by talking," she explained in a Dutch TV interview. "He is a sensitive person. He gets the fierce racing side from Jos. The gentle side from me. But make no mistake, eh. Under the helmet he is a tiger."
Given Max's childhood and the tempestuous marriage surrounding his early home life before his parents split, it's not much of a stretch to imagine where that diplomatic impulse might come from. It's something so at odds with his racing image, someone who is so uncompromising in his desire to win, he's even prepared to cross the line. As he phrased it in one of his own documentaries, "Sometimes you even have to be a dick to win."
The combination of that sociable, easy-going, even tempered guy outside the car (the Sophie side) and the uncompromising competitive monster in it (the Jos side) is a big part of his strength. But specifically, it has been front and centre in how brilliantly well he kept everything so cohesive in the '24 campaign when it had many ingredients which could have decimated it.
Further fallout from the early season controversy came as Adrian Newey announced his departure from the team, just prior to Miami in May. Max admitted it was a blow, but still he stayed focused. Because there was much to focus on – this was not going to be the breeze the early races had suggested it was going to be. There was a nagging trait in the car, one which had started to become apparent in last year's towards the end of the season: as they applied more aero load to it, so it was becoming more imbalanced. The front end wasn’t keeping up and it was becoming ever trickier to get the car into its sweet-spot window with set-up.
When McLaren made its breakthrough update in Miami, Red Bull's limitation was exposed. It was no longer superior, merely competitive. Then, as McLaren further developed its aero elasticity to give it a great front end at low speeds without compromising its balance at higher speeds, it began pulling clear of Red Bull. The middle part of Verstappen’s season – Silverstone to Monza – was all about wrestling with the competitive consequences of that as Mercedes surged into form too.
It was at this point that Verstappen began visiting the factory at every possible opportunity, maximising his simulator time, working with the engineers in trying to find a solution to the car's limitations. "His workload has been phenomenal this year," says an admiring Horner. But without surprise, for as he’s also said in the past, "The more pressure you put on, the better he delivers… his mental resilience is the strongest I've ever seen."
Only at Hungary did the strain that the competitive struggle was putting on the relationship become apparent. There, he was having an untypically scrappy race trying to overcome the car’s limitations on a day when both McLaren and Mercedes were faster. His race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase (aka ‘GP’) is a tough but calm character, gives as good as he gets and in that sense is perfect for Max. There’d already been a terse exchange between them about Max giving a place back to Lando Norris after having passed off-track. When GP admonished him for not bringing in his new tyres sympathetically, it triggered the sullen kid who hates to be beaten and he responded with (the more-severe expletives removed), “No mate, don’t give me that bullshit now. You guys gave me this strategy, OK? I’m trying to rescue what’s left.” The strategy was perfectly good for the limitations of the car and was predicated on having newer tyres in the last stint, even though that involved getting undercut initially.
It was the low-point of his season – the breaking point after he’d carried the load for so long. It’s where the competitive fierceness conflicted with the leadership role, and it took a sit-down with Horner and Lambiase before the following race to realign that. They were in the car with him, they emphasised. He wasn’t alone, even if it feels like that in the cockpit sometimes. They felt his pain. He took it on board, as always completely straightforward in his communication. He likes to feel he can call the team out when it’s not delivering just as they can call him out when he’s wrong. This was one of the latter times. But there’s never any lingering resentment. “He’s emotional,” says Horner. “Partly that’s where the performance comes from. He’s incredibly strong-willed. He’s a thoroughbred and can be very sharp when emotions are running high. He doesn’t hold back.”
As that sit-down coincided with Monza, with the car at its absolute nadir, we were witnessing how close the whole thing was to falling down. Had the relationship not been repaired and the car’s shortfalls continued not to be understood, it’s easy to imagine a scenario where the partnership broke down irretrievably. But actually not only did they rally around Max and give him the reassurance he needed to get out of that negative place the Budapest weekend took him to, but Monza then shone a big light on the cause of the car’s woes. Which they could set about addressing. Together, they emerged from the crisis.
As they did that, we saw a classic bit of Verstappen hard-headedness in Austin and particularly Mexico against his title challenger Norris. The niggle between them had started in Austria back in June, when they’d punctured each other’s tyres as Verstappen fended off Norris’s attacks in a way which stretched the sporting regulations. It was like that again in Austin and Mexico and in the latter event his move at Turn 7, with no attempt to make the corner so as to ensure Norris went behind once more, was outrageous. It brought to mind his quote about what you had to be sometimes. That’s where he draws his lines; it’s about prevailing and about how extreme he’s willing to be. No one is ever going to pass him around the outside, he says. Something that was drilled into him as a kid in karting by Jos.
If there is turbulence in the aftermath he’ll not acknowledge it. In fact he seemed mystified about why Norris was so upset afterwards in Austria, that delineation for him between on-track and off rarely so well illustrated. Criticism for the incidents by the media did seem to sting him, though. “He’s more sensitive than you think,” Horner says. “Inevitably he’s aware of the criticism and some of it, I think, is very unfounded. He’s a driver that drives aggressively; he’s an attacking driver. But so was Senna, so was Schumacher, so was Hamilton, and they all came under the same kind of spotlight at various times in their careers.”
It was the criticism he received after his incidents with Norris in Austin and Mexico which particularly bugged him. He perceived them as attacks from countrymen of Norris rather than as attacks against professional fouls. He knows he’s the best out there and if there’s some nudging over the specified lines of regulation on track involved in overcoming the competitive limitations of the car, then he probably feels justified. That, for some, puts him in the same bracket as Michael Schumacher as someone whose achievements have an asterisk against them. But he’s not racing for their approval.
He’s not even racing for achievements. As he says about more titles, “I’m already very proud to win four. Winning one or seven is the same thing. You’re just repeating. It’s nice to repeat but it means the same thing. The first one is what you are chasing, is the whole reason you are there. You’ve done it. After that, it’s just nice and doesn’t really mean as much. What’s been beautiful is that each of the four titles have had different emotions. This one has been the best as we’ve not had the fastest car. But the first one will always mean the most.”
That indifference to the statistics of achievement means he won’t be trapped into chasing numbers that only mean anything to outsiders. But there’ll be a conflict between his love of racing and his stated yearning not to be racing long before he reaches 40 (which is what Lewis Hamilton used to say too!). That conflict will surely play a crucial part in what he decides to do with the rest of his life. He’s never known any other life, of course, as the boy brought up in the circus.
As a driver he’s one of the all-time greats, a more formidable all-rounder even than Fernando Alonso, faster, more extreme. But similar. Alonso is the nearest driver in overall traits. But even the great Alonso bows down to the level Max has attained. The number of times Max has not maximised his car since joining Red Bull in 2016 can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Is he the outright fastest over a lap? Often he is, yes. But this is a misunderstood concept. A driver can only get to the ceiling of his ability if the car’s traits, the way it is balanced, allow him to. There are many reasons why it won’t be, especially in this era of thermally sensitive tyres.
But let’s assume every driver on the grid was magically given a fully competitive car, each perfectly balanced to match the outer edge of their specific style, in how each driver was wired up physiologically. Would Max be the fastest in qualifying? Possibly not. If it wasn’t him, you’d be looking for Charles Leclerc, possibly Lewis Hamilton at the height of his powers. But in the grind of a race and the even grittier grind of a season, would Verstappen in those circumstances prevail? Almost certainly he would, yes.
There’s no weakness. Schumacher had weaknesses, Senna too. Alain Prost was as rounded as Max but not as quick. Before then, we are heavily into the dangerous era – the years which killed Gilles Villeneuve or Jochen Rindt or Jim Clark and mortally wounded Stirling Moss, drivers who, like Senna, could conjure things that left their contemporaries shaking their heads in wonder. None of the current stars, Max included, quite have that. But Max can maximise every situation with unerring consistency like Fangio, like Clark, like Stewart. And if the peaks of his raw speed are not quite as miraculous as some of the past, he runs close to that almost all of the time, probably more than anyone before.
He’ll be missed when he’s gone, when the rewards no longer offset the energy draining irritations.

Red Bull Raphael Cameron – #1 Cleo Anderson – #208
Rafe Cameron has been locked in at Red Bull, with the world champion's deal running to running through to the end of 2028. This has not prevented speculation over a possible move elsewhere, amid rumours of interest from Ferrari. Cameron has stated, however, that he is not considering changing teams.
While Sergio Perez signed a contract extension earlier in the season to keep him at the team through to 2026, the Mexican and Red Bull subsequently reached an agreement to part ways with immediate effect following the conclusion of a tough campaign. His seat will be filled by Cleo Anderson, the first female F1 driver since Maria Teresa de Filippis, Lella Lombardi and Susie Wolff, who has impressed at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Ferrari Charles Leclerc – #16 John Booker Routledge – #5
Following Carlos Sainz' retirement when it was confirmed at the end of the 2022 season, rookie John B. Routledge has made the step up from F2 to F1 and has impressed many, following in the footsteps of his father and seven-time world champion.
The other spot at Ferrari will be retained by Charles Leclerc. Having raced for the Scuderia since 2019, the Monegasque has pledged his future to the squad, having signed a contract extension which will see him stay with the team for several more years.
McLaren Lando Norris – #4 Oscar Piastri – #81
As they continue their progression following a rapid surge in performance during 2023, McLaren have settled on their driver line-up for the long-term. Lando Norris – who has been racing for the team since making his F1 debut in 2019 – agreed a new “extended multi-year” contract with the squad prior to the start of 2024.
Joining him will be Oscar Piastri, with the Australian also committed to the team after signing a multi-year extension until the end of 2026.

Mercedes Lewis Hamilton – #44 Topper Thornton – #47
Lewis Hamilton will remain with Mercedes in 2025, marking his thirteenth season racing for the team. It was confirmed in August 2023 that the Briton had signed a new two-year deal to keep him at the Silver Arrows through to the end of next season.
While the same contract was announced for George Russell, he ultimately activated a release option to allow for his move but was left without a seat in the 2025 season, announcing his retirement shortly after. His replacement will be reserve driver Topper Thornton, moving 2024 F2 driver and long-time Mercedes protégé Kimi Antonelli to the reserve driver position, with Team Principal Toto Wolff hoping to have uncovered the next Max Verstappen given the young Italian’s sparkling junior category CV.
RB Yuki Tsunoda – #22 JJ Maybank – #6
It was announced prior to the Canadian Grand Prix that Yuki Tsunoda will continue to race for RB in 2025 after the team took up an option on their agreement with the Japanese driver, marking his fifth season at the Red Bull sister outfit.
Daniel Ricciardo made way for JJ Maybank for the United States Grand Prix after an inconsistent season, becoming the 19th driver to be promoted to F1 from Red Bull's junior programme.

Williams Alex Albon – #23 Franco Colapinto – #43
Alex Albon will enter his fourth season as a Williams driver in 2025, having signed a multi-year contract extension with the team which will keep him there through to 2026.
At the end of August, Williams announced that their academy driver and F2 racer Franco Colapinto will contest the remainder of the 2024 season with the squad, replacing Logan Sargeant as Alex Albon’s team mate from the Italian Grand Prix. Following this move, Colapinto has signed a multi-year deal for the team, giving them continuity into the new year of engine regulations.
Aston Martin Fernando Alonso – #14 Lance Stroll – # 18
Fernando Alonso enjoyed an impressive start to his tenure with Aston Martin in 2023 and, while the team have struggled to maintain those results, the Spaniard has reaffirmed his belief in the project by signing a deal that will keep him at the squad until at least the end of 2026.
Lance Stroll – who has been incumbent on the line-up since joining in their Racing Point guise back in 2019 – has also been confirmed at the team for 2025 alongside Alonso, giving the team helpful continuity.

Alpine Esteban Ocon – #31 Pierre Gasly – #10
Esteban Ocon was set to leave following a five-year stint with the squad but with the volatile driver's market, Ocon signed a deal that will keep him with Alpine until at least the end of 2026.
Team mate Pierre Gasly has been re-signed to the squad on a multi-year extension. He will be joined by reserve driver Jack Doohan, who won out over other candidates to step up to F1 in 2025 - and where his development will be overseen by new Team Principle Oliver Oakes.
Haas Kevin Magnussen – #20 Nico Hulkenberg – #27
After returning to the F1 grid with Haas in 2023, Nico Hulkenberg has signed a contract extension that will see him remain with the squad until the end of 2028. It was also confirmed in July that with Kevin Magnussen's contract expiring at the close of 2024, he may be departing at the end of the current campaign, but he too signed an extension that will see him with Haas until the end of 2028.
Kick Sauber Zhou Guanyu – #24 Valtteri Bottas – #77
Zhou Guanyu and Valtteri Bottas' contracts see them with the squad until the end of the 2025, after which they will both be set to depart.
Following the San Paulo Grand Prix weekend the team confirmed that rookie Gabriel Bortoleto would be joining as the reserve driver, with the potential to move up to a full-time position in 2026.

THE 2025 CHAMPIONSHIP IS ALREADY HEATING UP
2025 brought with it a wave of excitement and expectations, and it met every single of them. In the first five races, we've received four different race winners, a rookie driver and team leading the championship, and shocking disasters from Ferrari and Red Bull. Every race has been packed with action and incidents. But the age old question still arrives: who will walk away with the championship?
MCLAREN AND REDBULL'S rivalry continues with both Lando and Max having one race win each. While they are currently engaged in battle for P2, they cannot be doubted in the championship race. With 19 races to go, it's still anybody's game, and if the 2024 season has proved anything, it's that these two are the front runners to grab it.
MEANWHILE FERRARI started their F1 season in disastrous fashion. With only one podium in Australia, Ferrari find themselves far away from the likes of Porsche as they try to fix out their technical issues within the team. While fans have not given up hope with Hamilton's shocking move, he hasn't quite proven why he was signed to the team. And going forward, it's going to continue to be hard. Especially after looking at the driver in first.
AVA FLORENCE has displayed a masterclass of a rookie season in Formula 1. She's so far the only driver to be on the podium for every race of the season. That is allowed her to remain atop the standing with a 20 point cushion to Lando Norris. Her remarkable consistency has given her a strong push for the championship, but to win the coveted achievement as a rookie is still a tall ask. Not many doubt her capabilities anymore, or, rather, she hasn't let anybody doubt her abilities. So, will Ava Florence walk away as the first rookie to a win an F1 Championship?

THE MCLARENS were fast. Really, really fast. Throughout the first two sessions, Lando put himself into the top three every time. Piastri was catching too. After an overall disappointing start to his 3rd F1 season, it seems he found his stride. And soon, he was the only man catching on Lando.
AVA'S QUALIFYING struggles continued. She wasn't sure what it was anymore. Some days, it was the car fighting against her. Other days, she felt she had no pace whatsoever. Regardless, her consistency and remarkable racecraft kept her in the top five. That's all that mattered to Porsche at this point. They were in a fight against McLaren and they had the lead. Consistency was all that was on their mind. And with two cars in the top five, it was (mostly) smiles in the paddock.

However he hasn't been able to convert it into a race win yet in the spring races. And with Piastri behind him it's not going to be easy. We saw what these two did last season. Let's hope for much of the same this year."

Once rivals, now teammates fighting for P6 in a sprint race. As Hamilton gets a good exit out of Turn 11 and will now be in DRS range of the Monegasque. Through the chicane they go and now Hamilton, with the DRS, is looking to make the dive on his teammate as he's going to get past Leclerc before the corner. Hamilton up to P6."
LAP 10:
FLORENCE Something is not right with the front wing.
HENRY Copy that, Ava. You're doing great. Just do your best to hold off Verstappen.
"That's not going to be good for Ava Florence. She was having front wing problems during qualifying yesterday and now she'll have Max Verstappen charging behind her. Red Bull is strong on this circuit."
LAP 13:
"The fight against the Porsches is not finished for Verstappen. He's within DRS range now on the longest straight of the circuit. Tremendous acceleration by the Red Bull. Verstappen breathing down Ava's neck into Turn 17."
"We really get to see the problems that front wing is causing. Florence is losing so much on time on the straights."
"Doesn't help when you have Verstappen behind you. 4 time champion he is."
HENRY We need to push Turn 12 and 16.

We'll have to iron it out and fix it as soon as possible." Ava Florence was struggling with ERS failure during Sprint Race qualifying.
PIASTRI took pole. It made sense. He was the quickest man on the track since the sprint race. He had beaten his teammate horrible during the 19 laps and it now his time to shine for McLaren. The Aussie clinches his first pole position and now all interest turned towards Piastri to turn things around for McLaren. They were some distance away from Porsche, but with Lando gunning behind, this could be their pivotal chance to dethrone the German horses.

"He was trying to get past Lawson, but Lawson all of a sudden on the brakes. He had to really move away to avoid a crash, but it's ended up costing him crucial time."
VETTEL Is he trying to kill me or what?
RUDI Sebastian, we have damage on the front wing. Be careful.
"That is two Porsche's with front wing damage. What a first lap this has been? Certainly one to forget for Porsche. Not one for Piastri however. He's still leading as down Turns 9 and 10 they go. DRS not enabled yet."
"I think the stewards are going to look into that incident... No, they're going to look at the incident between Lando and Ava. So, let's see what the stewards decide for that. Looking at the replay... It looks like Florence just turned into a little too much, but I hardly think that's anybody's fault. She left room, had the space, but just didn't expect Lando to be so stationary. But we'll have to wait and see what the stewards make of that."
LAP 5:
"That's Bortoleto making moves. Around the outside Yuki Tsunoda he goes. He's up into P19 after qualifying last on the grid."
"Just not been great for Audi these past couple of rounds. They made shocking waves when they had that sprint race win and double podium, but they just can't seem to get the hang of these fast-flowing tracks."
"Bortoleto giving it everything he can to make up lost positions. Another driver who's gaining positions, Esteban Ocon. He's up into P11, just knocking on the door for points... And if couldn't get any worse, Ava Florence has been given a drive through penalty for causing an accident with Land Norris on Turn 1. So, Florence, will effectively be last on the grid when she comes out."
HENRY Okay, Ava. We've been given a drive through penalty for that incident with Norris.
FLORENCE This is a joke!

"Here's Antonelli on Fernando Alonso. The rookie against the master. Side by side they go, into the DRS detection zone. Antonelli with have DRS. He'll use DRS and he'll get ahead of Fernando Alonso. Antonelli, up into P11."
"That's the kind of driving that Mercedes signed Antonelli for. Just brave, fast, and relentless. Doesn't matter if it's a rookie or a 43 year old legend."
"Further down the back, there's Ava Florence. She's caught up with the backmarkers. On the inside of Pierre Gasly, and that's an easy pass for the Porsche."
LAP 15:
"And here we go, the pit window is opening up. Lawson is the first to blink, coming in for fresh hard tires. He's followed closely by Leclerc and Hamilton. So, both Ferraris are going to pit together. And it's the hard compound for both of them."
"Interesting strategy from Red Bull. They're keeping Verstappen out there. He's still chasing down Piastri, so I don't think they want to hold him up. But Piastri is managing to maintain a steady 10-second gap throughout the race so far. So maybe they should pit for fresher tires and see if that change the pace."
LAP 18:
"Now we see Norris coming into the pits... That looks like a good top for McLaren: 2.3 seconds. He's back out in P8, but with fresh rubber, he'll be looking to make up ground quickly. And there goes Verstappen! Red Bull finally bringing him in. This could be the crucial moment of the race. Piastri stays out. Will this overcut work for McLaren?"
LAP 20:
"Piastri finally comes in, and it's a quick stop from McLaren. He's out... and he's JUST ahead of Verstappen! That's a good call from McLaren and this is going to crucial for Piasti as he now as slightly fresher tires and the lead to Verstappen."
"The order has certainly been shaken up. It's now Piastri, Verstappen, Antonelli who hasn't stopped yet, Norris, Leclerc, and Lawson rounding out the top 6. Florence, her charge is slowing down. She's stuck behind this train of cars, all who haven't pitted yet, so maybe they'll... No, Florence is coming into the pits. So, Florence will be the first of the Porsche's to come in."
LAP 30:
"That call earlier to bring Florence into the pits is working. What a charge we're seeing from Ava Florence! She's been absolutely flying through the field. She's just passed Alonso for P12, and she's hunting down Hulkenberg for a chance at points."
"Incredible recovery from her. We saw this in China even. She just has incredible grit and determination."
LAP 35:
"Florence makes another move! That was a move five laps into the making. She's past Hulkenberg and into the points! P10 for Ava Florence and with 22 laps to go, the positions are still up for grabs. She's the fastest driver on the track right now."
"We're also seeing great drives from Ocon and Colapinto. Ocon's up to P7, while Colapinto has fought his way up to P9. This is superb driving from these two drivers. Their teams need these points badly."
LAP 43:
"OH NO! Disaster for Pierre Gasly! His car has come to a complete stop on the back straight. Looks like a total power unit failure. The marshals are rushing to the scene. That's going need to a safety car."
"And there it is, the safety car has been deployed. This is exactly what some of these drivers need. Bunch up the back and regain the positions they lost to some of the midfield teams. And here comes the car coming into the pitlanes."
"Cars are diving into the pits left and right. Piastri, Verstappen, Norris all coming in. But wait, Florence is staying out! Brave call from Porsche."
"She pitted for the hard compounds quite later than these guys so she's perfectly fine on the tires here. I think that was the right call for them. Oh! Disaster for Vettel in the pits! The front jack dropped before the wheel was on properly. That's cost him at least 10 seconds! And... he's behind the entire pack."
"That is not good news for Porsche. They spend the entire race trying to bring Florence up to the top 10, now Vettel has dropped. Right about now, this is sounding like news to the McLaren pit."

Interviewer: Oscar, first race win of the season. You won the sprint race, you got pole, you won the Grand Prix. What are you feeling?
Oscar: Uh, yeah, it's good. The car felt fast all weekend and we did a lot of things right. So... I'm happy about this whole weekend. Great for me. Great for the team.
Interviewer: Max. You were very fast throughout the weekend, but you couldn't quite manage the pace to win. Can you tell us about that?
Max: Yeah, pretty much like you said. Super quick, but maybe not as fast as McLarens so we're definitely going to discuss that after the race. We've been getting better these past couple of races, so that would be nice to get more wins.
Interviewer: This has certainly been a rocky weekend for you, Ava. But you managed to climb back through it. Tell us about that?
Ava: Turn 1, tried to get past Norris, but I didn't think he wouldn't move on the corner. Got damage on the front wing. Then the FIA had to screw me over and gave me that penalty. But then the safety car came out and that helped us a lot. So thank you Pierre for that one. But to be honest, my real podium motivation was seeing your face and so it worked!

why Oscar Piastri will win every race left of the 2025 F1 season:
a very, very realistic and totally objective post 😇
Suzuka: the birthday boy gets whatever he wants on his birthday, so here’s the win
Bahrain: his first ever F1 race that ended with a windows error screen DNF, it only makes sense for it to be a win this time around
Jeddah: he always slays on this track, so it obviously will be a P1
Miami: karma adores Oscar (look at Alpine and Sainz) so this time the safety car will be in his favour and he will get the dub 🤗
Imola: his 3/16th Italian carries him to victory here
Monaco: adoptive home race! Australia was so bad he wins all his other home races 😍
Spain: he has to make up for last year’s performance by winning I don’t make the rules
Canada: I’m Canadian so this win will be for me 😁
Austria: would be the 10th race of his winning streak, tying Max for the all time record which means it is bound to be a victory
Silverstone: he’s been robbed of podiums twice already on this track, fate has to turn around this time
Spa: HIS FAVORITE TRACK!!! OBVIOUSLY IT’S A DUB!!!
Hungary: he’s gonna get this one to make up for the bittersweetness of his first win at Hungary trust 🙂↕️

Qatar: the breakthrough weekend of his rookie season, winning this race on his WDC campaign would be poetic

SCENES FROM MODERN LIFE; THOMAS EAKINS
Thomas Eakins (1844–1916) was an influential American painter known for his realism and focus on the human form. His father was a calligrapher and writing teacher, and at first, that seems to have been Thomas Eakins’ direction, too. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts where he learnt drawing and anatomy.
The Champion Single Sculls (Max Schmitt in a Single Scull) (1871)
Created to commemorate the victory of Eakins's friend, Max Schmitt, in a rowing competition on Philadelphia's Schuylkill River. Eakins, a passionate oarsman himself, depicted Schmitt in a moment of calm rather than in the throes of competition. The painting captures great detail in the water, oars, and weather, Eakins even included himself in the artwork, rowing in the background.
Portrait of Dr. Samuel D. Gross (The Gross Clinic) (1875)
It is a portrait of the renowned Philadelphia surgeon in the surgical amphitheater of Jefferson Medical College (now part of Thomas Jefferson University). Eakins includes himself in the painting, seated at the far left, sketching the scene. The patient's mother, who looks away and shields her eyes, unable to watch the surgery, is also included. The procedure took place before the advent of aseptic technique, so instruments were clean but not sterile, gloves and gowns were not worn.
Arcadia (c 1883)
This painting was an unusual venture into mythology, created during a period when Eakins was experimenting with photography. Eakins had bought his first camera in 1880 and started to use it as a photographic sketchbook. Although it can be read as another step in his campaign for painting from life, the work features models posed in a pastoral setting, including his future wife, Susan Macdowell, and his nephew, Ben Crowell.
Swimming (The Swimming Hole) (1885)
Bathers have been a popular and recurrent theme in paintings since the dawn of the art. Here, Eakins features identifiable figures, which are Eakins himself and several of his students. However, its exhibition in 1885 sparked controversy due to its graphic portrayal of nudity and identifiable figures. This backlash contributed to Eakins's resignation from the Academy in 1886 after a series of complaints about his promotion of nude studies.
The Agnew Clinic (1889)
This fine painting shows the surgeon performing a partial mastectomy, and the whole scene is a testament of how surgery had advanced in just fourteen years. The clean white gowns worn by the doctors, the use of sterilized instruments, techniques promoted by Agnew. Eakins completed the painting quickly, in just three months, rather than the year he took for his earlier masterpiece, The Gross Clinic.

Okay, I'm Back (Kinda)
First lesson of the day is I apparently can't spend a lot of time away from y'all. So I'm back! 😂
I might as well give a recap of what happened for those unaware:
Long story short, one of Kelly's fangirls attempted to dox me. Apparently my work (and promoting said work) hit so hard she decided the next logical step was to try and contact my parents and my job.
Because nothing screams “healthy parasocial response” like going nuclear on someone who made a video essay and wants it to be successful. 🫠
The person behind it is someone I’m familiar with: Elisabeth/ formula1bliz/tothegrandprix. I know it’s her because she uses the same pfp for all her accounts. A truly masterful game of disguise if you want to be found out immediately.
She’s been unhinged about my content for a while now... quote-retweeting me from the shadows, trying to "discredit" my work through by giving long diatribes to out-of-context scenes, and framing public receipts as private attacks.
But I kind of forgot she existed until last week, when she showed up in my Tumblr askbox. 😂

But on Monday, things escalated.
That morning, I officially opened applications for people to translate the full exposé. It got a lot of attention (and a LOT of applications, my goodness!).
What did Elisabeth do? She then posted on her story encouraging people to mass report my accounts. Because of course she did.

(We’ll get to that email later lol)
Let's pause and take this in: she got blocked for boundary crossing behavior, and her response was to… threaten more boundary crossing behavior. And what the hell i she trying to even accomplish here? Prove that I have a public email address where I take YouTube inquiries?
But then... Elisabeth escalated. She posted my last name (which while it's an open secret, is not something I utilize in my public branding), my parents’ names, and my employer. She encouraged people to contact them.
Let me be really clear: this was a deliberate attempt to incite harassment, compromise my safety, and try to silence me through fear. And that’s not activism. That’s not even messiness. That’s targeted cruelty.
Also, remember how I said I’ve been doxxed before? Long ago? Luckily, I knew exactly what to do. I contacted my friends to ask them to report the content, flagged everything I needed to flag, took screenshots, and filed formal reports where appropriate. I didn’t spiral. I didn’t panic. I didn’t let them rewrite the narrative.
And before you say "But you're doing the same thing by operating hate accounts!!!" I'm not. Not even close. What I do is not harassment. It’s not about inciting a mob, revealing someone’s location, or endangering their job or family. I critique a public figure based on public behavior, using public records and public platforms. It’s cultural commentary/media analysis with a hint of performance art. If you can’t tell the difference between that and a targeted smear campaign designed to endanger someone in real life, maybe the issue isn’t my exposé. Maybe it’s your media literacy.
The most ironic thing, at least in my opinion, is their attempt to contact my family over my content. Why? They’re already well aware of what I do! My dad was the mandatory reporter I consulted for the exposé parts detailing Max’s childhood. My brother LITERALLY VOICED MAX IN THE VIDEOS.
Here’s what happened when someone actually tried to follow through on contacting my family: I got a text from my dad. Not because he was shocked about my content, but because people started bothering him directly. He wasn’t upset about what I said. He was worried about the lengths these strangers were going to to silence it. He was worried about how it could affect ME.
But I’m not going to walk away from this just because some insane Kelly fans don’t like the fact I post a lot of samples from my work (alongside other projects). That’s not how I work. The abridged exposé is still coming out as scheduled. The translations are still underway. And I have my future plans set in stone.
I'm slowly going to return to my normal posting schedule over the next week or so. Just know that I'm okay and nothing happened to me or my family.
And a note to anyone else who thinks weaponizing personal information will stop me: all you’re doing is proving my point. You’re confirming exactly what the exposé laid out. You're proving how power defends itself through deflection, coercion, and intimidation.

Pre-alpha Lancer Tactics changelog
(cross-posting the full gif changelog here because folks seemed to like it last time I did)
We're aiming for getting the first public alpha for backers by the end of this month! Carpenter and I scoped out mechanics that can wait until after the alpha (e.g. grappling, hiding) in favor of tying up the hundred loose threads that are needed for something that approaches a playable game. So this is mostly a big ol changelog of an update from doing that.
But I also gave a talent talk at a local Portland Indie Game Squad event about engine architecture! It'll sound familiar if you've been reading these updates; I laid out the basic idea for this talk almost a year ago, back in the June 2023 update.

We've also signed contracts & had a kickoff meeting with our writers to start on the campaigns. While I've enjoyed like a year of engine-work, it'll be so so nice to start getting to tell stories. Data structures don't mean anything beyond how they affect humans & other life.
New Content
Implemented flying as a status; unit counts as +3 spaces above the current ground level and ignores terrain and elevation extra movement costs. Added hover + takeoff/land animations.
Gave deployables the ability to have 3D meshes instead of 2D sprites; we'll probably use this mostly when the deployable in question is climbable.
Related, I fixed a bug where after terrain destruction, all units recheck the ground height under them so they'll move down if the ground is shot out from under them. When the Jerichos do that, they say "oh heck, the ground is taller! I better move up to stand on it!" — not realizing that the taller ground they're seeing came from themselves.
Fixed by locking some units' rendering to the ground level; this means no stacking climbable things, which is a call I'm comfortable making. We ain't making minecraft here (I whisper to myself, gazing at the bottom of my tea mug).
Block sizes are currently 1x1x0.5 — half as tall as they are wide. Since that was a size I pulled out of nowhere for convenience, we did some art tests for different block heights and camera angles. TLDR that size works great and we're leaving it.
Added Cone AOE pattern, courtesy of an algorithm NMcCoy sent me that guarantees the correct number of tiles are picked at the correct distance from the origin.
pick your aim angle
for each distance step N of your cone, make a list ("ring") of all the cells at that distance from your origin
sort those cells by angular distance from your aim angle, and include the N closest cells in that ring in the cone's area

Got Walking Armory's Shock option working. Added subtle (too subtle, now that I look at it) electricity effect.

Increase map elevation cap to 10. It's nice but definitely is risky with increasing the voxel space, gonna have to keep an eye on performance.
Added Structured + Stress event and the associated popups. Also added meltdown status (and hidden countdown), but there's not animation for this yet so your guy just abruptly disappears and leaves huge crater.
UI Improvements
Rearranged the portrait maker. Auto-expand the color picker so you don't have to keep clicking into a submenu.
Added topdown camera mode by pressing R for handling getting mechs out of tight spaces.
The action tooltips have been bothering me for a while; they extend up and cover prime play-area real estate in the center of the screen. So I redesigned them to be shorter and have a max height by putting long descriptions in a scrollable box. This sounds simple, but the redesign, pulling in all the correct data for the tags, and wiring up the tooltips took like seven hours. Game dev is hard, yo.
Put the unit inspect popups in lockable tooltips + added a bunch of tooltips to them.
Implemented the rest of Carpenter's cool hex-y action and end turn readout. I'm a big fan of whenever we can make the game look more like a game and less like a website (though he balances out my impulse for that for the sake of legibility).
Added a JANKY talent/frame picker. I swear we have designs for a better one, but sometimes you gotta just get it working. Also seen briefly here are basic level up/down and HASE buttons.
Other no-picture things:
Negated the map-scaling effect that happens when the window resizes to prevent bad pixel scaling of mechs at different resolutions; making the window bigger now just lets you see more play area instead of making things bigger.
WIP Objectives Bullets panel to give the current sitrep info
Wired up a buncha tooltips throughout the character sheet.
Under the Hood
Serialization: can save/load games! This is the payoff for sticking with that engine architecture I've been going on about. I had to add a serialization function to everything in the center layer which took a while, but it was fairly straightforward work with few curveballs.
Finished replacement of the kit/unit/reinforcement group/sitrep pickers with a new standardized system that can pull from stock data and user-saved data.
Updated to Godot 4.2.2; the game (and editor) has been crashing on exit for a LONG time and for the life of me I couldn't track down why, but this minor update in Godot completely fixed the bug. I still have no idea what was happening, but it's so cool to be working in an engine that's this active bugfixing-wise!
Other Bugfixes
Pulled straight from the internal changelog, no edits for public parseability:

fix impaired not showing up in the unit inspector (its status code is 0 so there was a check that was like "looks like there's no status here")
fix skirmisher letting you move to a tile that should cost two movement if it's only one space away
fix hit percent calculation
fix rangefinder grid shader corner issues (this was like a full day to rewrite the shader to be better)
Teleporting costs the max(spaces traveled, elevation change) instead of always 1
So um, yeah, that's my talk, any questions? (I had a professor once tell us to never end a talk like this, so now of course it's the phrase that first comes to mind whenever I end a talk)
