thinking about the infantiliztation and/or formalization of 19th-century women's clothing to modern audiences
like
our entire reference point for "wearing long skirts and outfits with decoration like lace, embroidery, appliques, etc." is either formalwear or fictional characters in children's media like Disney princesses. women's clothing is just so radically different now- not that those elements don't exist, but they're much less common in everyday clothing than they once were. some form of simple trousers and an equally simple top are de rigeur for everyday attire, and anything else is Fancy
combined with the fact- which is true! -that a lot of what survives to end up in big museums belonged to wealthy people, this ends up in wild assumptions like "basically our entire idea of what the Victorians dressed like is just Rich People Clothes really"
which has led to the eternal cry of "but what did NORMAL people wear?!?!?!" that will not be satisfied with real examples of middle or even working-class everyday clothing because it still looks too "fancy" to modern eyes
not Victorian, but a great example of this is what Abby Cox wore to portray a milliner (hatmaker) in Colonial Williamsburg. a working, middle-class woman:
Tumblr media
(ignore the facial expression there)
this is the exact outfit she sported in a video that apparently got responses like "but that's just what rich women wore!" and it is, in fact, everyday attire for a working person. a person who worked in the fashion industry, it's true, but still
I had someone ask me about how to find examples of casual Victorian clothing because they were at their wits' end trying to research it. and I had to tell them that...what they were looking at WAS casual. in the sense of Clothing For Everyday Wear That's Not Especially Formal. there's nothing inherently formal, or exclusive to the wealthy, about a matched bodice-and-skirt dress, instep-length, with some trim. or even a trimmed blouse and skirt. obviously women working the absolute hardest outdoor, physical jobs might have adopted occupational trousers or similar, but we don't all dress like construction or farm workers all the time nowadays. why would they have back then?
Tumblr media
Laundresses, probably 1850s or early 60s. Note that I can STILL date the picture based on their outfits and hair, and these are the furthest things from wealthy socialites.
Tumblr media
Maid scrubbing steps, probably 1870s or 1880s. Note pleated trim on her skirt and what appears to be a peplum at the back of her bodice.
also, not all working women worked physical jobs any more than we do today. here is a teacher around the turn of the 20th century:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Teachers, 1887
Tumblr media
"Breton Seamstresses," 1845, by Jules Trayer
were there differences in quality, type and quantity of trim, fit, etc? obviously. but some people are convinced that the basic outfit format can't POSSIBLY have been something ordinary women wore, because it looks formal and/or princess-y in a modern context

grumpy hotch x pregnant reader where he is just having an off day and the team calls reader in to deal with him and as soon she arrives in his office he just holds her and her belly as she scratches his scalp omg 🥹😭🫶🏻
You’re lounging in your husband's favourite chair with a book and an ice cold soda in your hand when your phone rings. You almost knock your tooth out pulling it up to your face without looking, wanting it to be Aaron, knowing it probably won’t be. Maternity leave can be excruciatingly boring.
“Hello?” you ask. Your book slides down your bump. You pull it back up.
“Hi, mom.”
You grin to yourself. “Hi, Emily. Please tell me you’re calling because you miss me and you know I have cabin fever.”
“I’m calling because someone misses you.” Her ire tone is unmissable and ever endearing. “I do miss you, I can’t wait for you to have your stinking baby and come back to work.”
“That would be fun, right? We’ll get Hotch on paternity leave.”
“It’s him I’m calling about.”
“Is he okay?” you ask. You know if he were injured she would’ve mentioned that first. You’re not so scared of his being grumpy.
“Moody as ever. I can’t believe I’m asking you to, but would you consider coming in for lunch? I’ll send a car, no walking, but he could really use it. He’s been biting off heads all morning.” Emily laughs down the line. “You’re the only one who can cheer him up.”
It’s not true, but you are usually the quickest. You bid Emily goodbye with a promise to be there soon and get dressed, with no choice but to wear some maternity pants and a peplum blouse. Any excuse to see your haggard husband is one you’ll take.
You look at your bump and you love the baby in there, but it feels weird sometimes to see yourself differently. If Aaron weren’t as nice about it as he is, you would’ve broken down by now; he’s sussed many breakdowns before they could begin, kissed fingertips and collars promising you’re just as pretty as always. And it’s reassuring, but it isn’t pretty that worries you. You’re a genuine walking beach ball right now.
The car Emily promises is none other than Anderson himself. “He’s bullying you?” you ask him.
He doesn’t say yes or no, but his smile is enough of a clue. You can’t get to the BAU quick enough (though you’re slower these days), pushing open the glass door with a tired sign.
Spencer comes across you first by coincidence. “Hey!” he says, ushering you in for a hug, his cup of coffee hot behind your shoulder. “What are you doing here? You’re supposed to be resting.”
“He’s in a mood,” you say. Not without fondness.
Spencer grimaces. “Sort of.”
Emily attacks you from the side. “Thank god you’re here! I think he just told Morgan to go fuck himself,” she says under her breath.
She’s just saying it to make you laugh, and it works. It’s vaguely out of character, but if you know Emily, you know she has a crass, often dirty-minded side, and it’s been a while since you’ve heard her swear. You’re still giggling when the door you’d been making your way to opens.
Aaron emerges with an expression half bemusement and half confusion. “Honey?”
“My love,” you say, too quiet for him to properly hear, but he can read lips just fine.
He rushes in a very gentlemanly display down the steps to help you up them, but you’d only been going up them to see him, and you stop at the foot of them with your hand raised to his elbow. “Hey, handsome.”
“What’s wrong?” he asks.
“Nothing. Just missed you, wanted to have dinner, and I figured you couldn’t say no. You know.” You touch your tummy. “Considering.”
He peers suspiciously past your head. “Yeah?”
You look where he’s looking, find Emily and Spencer not so subtly turned away. You laugh again, pleased when the sound makes him smile. “Come on. Take me to your office.”
He puts a hand behind your shoulders and leads you upstairs to his office. There are papers strewn haphazard across the front of the desk, his briefcase open and muddled, his pen lost within the mess. You’re smug knowing he’d been knee deep in paperwork but abandoned it all when he heard you laughing, like he just couldn’t miss it.
“Let me sit you down,” he says.
“Woah, slow your roll. Why are you stressed?”
He blinks at you. “There’s a lot to do?”
“Sure, but why are you stressed about me? I can sit down by myself.”
He must look at you for five whole seconds without saying a word, and the door’s not closed, there’s no answer to your question, and then he takes you into his arms for a hug. “I know you can,” he says.
It’s admittedly hard to hug him with the bump between you. You worry you’re hurting him as your cheeks press together, crushing his shoulders under your hands.
He usually asks first, but he knows by now that you’re two halves of the same heart, two sides of the same coin, his hand slipping between you both to nudge aside your shirt and feel your stomach.
You close your eyes.
“Rough day?” you ask.
“A lot to do…” His face moves down into your neck.
You know what he wants, moving your hand to the back of his head to thread your fingers into his hair. “I can fix it,” you say sympathetically, beginning a gentle scratch of your nails against his scalp.
“How’s that?”
“If I go into labour right now, you get a reprieve.”
“Honey, in the most loving sense possible, you going into labour now would not be ideal.”
“It’s gonna happen one day, babe. And you’re gonna be just as busy then. You need to take less on or–”
“No, I know.”
His hand slides still under your shirt to your hip, encouraging you away from him, his eyes flitting up and down your figure, checking you over. You let your hand fall to his shoulder, fingertips interested in the starchy fabric of a new suit.
“Thank you,” he says quietly, dipping down to give you a kiss. His eyes are dark, so close. “That helped. What can I get you for dinner?”
You give a fond, pitying smile. You’re not gonna get him out of this office today, that’s for sure. “Half your sandwich, probably.”
He kisses you again. You take it for a thank you.

IN THE DARK (1.8k)
Tumblr media
a/n. thought about taking a break from my 2k milestone event by writing something that felt very personal to me. i was supposed to rest today but this sort of just...happened. i hope y'all like it.
cw. afab!reader, pro-hero!katsuki, aged-up characters, themes of body image issues, mentions of weight gain, minor nsfw references, basically just some hurt/comfort goodness
Tumblr media
you’re in the middle of re-scooping your boobs into what has become a tiny ass tank top when a soft array of knocks echoes from the door.
“babe? are you almost done?”
alarmed, you quickly glance at the mirror. it only takes you one look at your reflection to decide that nope—you’re definitely not going with this one—before you swiftly tug it off your body.
at least, you try to do so.
the fabric catches on the areas of your torso that have noticeably gotten fuller in the course of the past year and a half. you huff in frustration as you squirm, desperate to have what used to be your favorite halter top off you.
another round of knocks comes again.
“babe? you okay in there?”
“yeah!” you manage to choke out, finally out of that damned material. “don’t come in—i’m not decent.”
the moment you say those words, you instantly know what the reaction would be.
“hah?” comes his incredulous, borderline offended reply. “the fuck do you mean ‘you’re not decent’?”
scanning the interior of your small walk-in closet, you feel the panic rise in your throat until your eyes land on the pajamas and baggy t-shirt you were wearing before you started trying out outfits for the reunion you were having with the class of 1a tonight.
“i’m just in my underwear,” you retort, frantically putting back on the much more forgiving articles.
“i think i’ve seen you with much less than that, dumbass.”
“okay,” you call out, ignoring his comment and slightly winded from your efforts, “you can come in now!”
as if on cue, the door slowly opens, and in comes bakugou, who’s already dressed in a crisp, black button-down and straight-legged pants, a suspicious glint in his eyes as they dart across the room before landing on you.
and when they do, his lips almost instantly form into a frown.
“i thought you were getting changed?”
you feel yourself flame in embarrassment despite yourself.
“yeah, well…” you wrack your brain for a not-so-incriminating excuse, “none of the outfits i was envisioning are working.”
well, that is the truth, anyway.
it’s just not necessarily complete.
“okay…” he drawls out, entirely unconvinced. “why’d you put your pajamas back on, though? it’s not like i haven’t seen you naked or some shit.”
“uh—” you pause, before finally settling with: “—it’s just that i’m wearing ugly panties, is all. real granny, the-type-you-wear-on-your-period kinda stuff.”
bakugou only stares at you. “since when have you cared about me seeing that?”
you are not about to say that was a shitty excuse you pulled from your ass just now.
so instead, you turn your back against him and start riffling through the racks of clothes. “how ‘bout you help me pick out what to wear for tonight, huh, kats?”
a few moments of silence pass before you finally hear a quiet ‘sure’—which is immediately followed by him stepping forward and occupying the space beside you.
he goes through the options himself before his hands land on the white, off-shoulder peplum blouse you got around a year ago. taking it by the hanger, he lifts it on display.
“how ‘bout this?”
you immediately shake your head. “those make my arms look extra big.”
at that, bakugou’s face contorts in confusion. “what? no, they don’t.”
you chuckle dryly, wondering why you’re even having this conversation.
you coax the shirt from his grip and place it back where he pulled it from. “pick another one.”
bakugou doesn’t say anything, but you can feel him side-eyeing you more than anything. still, he relents, and picks out a sky-blue sleeveless high-neck top you copped from your go-to store a few months ago.
“i remember you looked really good in this,” he offers.
you hum absentmindedly at his comment, studying the spandex-like material. ultimately, though, you shake your head.
“that one hugs me in all the wrong places. really emphasizes my midriff.”
“but—”
“can you choose another one, please?”
the man huffs in what you think is disgruntlement but follows suit anyway. once again, he traces his hand along the articles of clothing for a minute until they finally stop at what used to be your favorite sleeveless, v-neck black crop top.
grinning, he pulls it out.
“you’ve got to wear this.”
at the sight of it, you pull your lips into a tight line. “…i don’t know, babe.”
“seriously?” he asks, looking dangerously close to insulted. “this one makes your boobs look absolutely incredible.”
“katsuki!”
“what? i’m not wrong, am i?”
for a second, you let yourself imagine what you would look like in that rather skimpy top. and for a brief moment, you actually believe it’ll work out.
that is until you remember you’re imagining the you from way back when, and the last time you put it on a few weeks ago, you thought you looked fucking horrendous.
with a heavy sigh and a shake of your head, you take the clothing from his hand so you can return it to the rack.
at least, you try to, because bakugou doesn’t let you.
when you tug again and his grip tightens, you finally look up at the man, confused.
“wha—”
“we need to talk.”
almost instantly, your stomach drops in anticipatory dread.
“oh?” you try to answer nonchalantly, trying to take the item again from his hold. thankfully, this time he lets go, but his serious gaze that’s fixed on you remains unyielding.
“oh? that’s all you have to say?”
you turn away from him, moving to hang it back on the cabinet. “i don’t think there’s time for that right now, kats.”
to further emphasize your point, you glance down at your watch, which now reads 6:17 pm.
fuck.
you’re already going to be late.
you think about it for a beat before finally coming to a conclusion and shifting to face him again.
“i think you should just go ahead.”
bakugo gapes at you like you just told him the sky was green. “what?”
“we’re already running late and i haven’t even done my makeup, let alone picked out what to wear,” you reason.
“you really think i even want to go to this stupid party?” he retorts right back. “you’re the only one who makes them bearable. to hell with this going alone shit.”
“but—”
“not happening, babe.”
you let out a heavy exhale, struggling to tamp down the disappointment at your failed attempt to get out of the situation.
neither of you says anything for what feels like minutes before bakugou finally breaks the monotonous quiet.
“…can i ask you something?”
his voice is so uncharacteristically soft that you can’t help but look up at him despite the visceral urge to avoid his gaze, anticipatory anxiety now churning in your gut at the question.
the man, though, apparently takes your silence as a yes, because he continues.
and you barely manage to stop yourself from choking on your spit when he does.
“why do we only have sex in the dark?”
that was not what you were expecting him to say.
“e-excuse me?”
bakugou moves to rub the back of his neck, perhaps feeling sheepish at his blunt query.
but he presses on.
“it’s just that i remember it wasn’t always like this. when we first started getting intimate with each other, you didn’t mind when the lights were on or if the curtains weren’t drawn. but then…”
“my preferences simply changed,” you interject, scared of letting him continue.
“really?” he asks, but the question seems more rhetorical than not. “because if you were to ask me, i’m starting to think…maybe, just maybe—and i could be wrong about this—you don’t want to be perceived.”
a long pause.
“baby?” comes bakugou’s worried voice when you don’t reply. “did i hurt you?”
you shake your head, although your eyes are trained downcast to your socked feet, unable to meet his gaze.
“say something, please.”
at his request, you finally look up, trying to blink away the tears that are pooling in your eyes before he notices.
but it’s either you don’t do it fast enough, or he’s just insanely perceptive, because bakugou manages to catch sight of it, eyes widening the second he does.
“shit, i’m so—”
“it’s okay!” you chuckle, waving him off. you take the hand that was just reaching out to wipe the tears away and encase it with yours. you chance a glance at the man, who’s now peering at you guiltily.
“i really didn’t mean to hurt you,” he starts again, “i just wanted to finally talk about it because—”
“i know, i know,” you cut him off before he can ramble any further. “don’t worry, babe. i’m not angry at you. it’s just…”
you take a shaky inhale.
“…it’s just that it’s been so hard, you know? i really try not to dwell on it because most of it is beyond my control, but…whenever i try on a dress that used to fit me so well, or when i look at my reflection, or especially when i’m bare for you to see and i feel your eyes roving over my body—it just hits me all over again.
“the fact that this is how i look like now. and i hate it.”
you look at bakugou, who’s staring at you so intently with a pained expression on his face.
“you don’t have to say anything,” you quickly add on. “i know this is kind of a lot to take in.”
“yeah—no, it’s just that i’m angry at myself for ever making you feel judged,” he huffs, and you can practically hear the frustration seeping out from his tone.
he tightens his hold on your hand.
“believe me, baby, when i say that when i look at you all so vulnerable like that, it’s never me fucking judging you. i can’t even—
“i can’t even begin to describe how much i love your body. every time i see even just a sliver of what’s underneath your clothes i get so hard i—”
you snort.
“—laugh all you want, but it’s true. it’s fucking embarrassing sometimes, how much my body reacts to seeing yours, but it’s true.”
you shoot him a sad, albeit grateful smile, to which he responds by squeezing your hand.
“look, i know i can’t change how you feel about your body, and i understand that you want to look differently. but i also do know that i can’t just stand here and watch you tear yourself apart like that. you don’t deserve any of that, you fucking hear me?”
you don’t even know where to start with your reply, so you opt to just nod wordlessly instead.
“good,” he grunts. “i’m just here to support you, whatever you wanna do. you already know that i think you’re beautiful the way you are right now, but if you want to do something or work towards a certain goal, i’ll be here.
“i know a thing or two about fitness, if you’re interested in exploring that.”
“really?” you beam at him, already feeling so light. “you’ll really help me with that?”
at that, bakugou scoffs. “‘course i will, dummy. actually…”
you peer at him curiously. “actually, what?”
he grins at you, the mood suddenly taking a mischievous turn.
“…i actually know of a certain cardio activity i wanna do right now, if you’re open to that.”

on indie sleaze
ive been reading a lot of magazine articles about indie sleaze and none of them can decide if it's coming back or not. i just listened to a podcast episode that came to the conclusion that it CANT come back because it relies on a pre-internet time where the scene was in the irl space and not a series of tiktoks in your phone. but i have to disagree - i think it HAS to come back.
in 2012 i was 10 - too young to participate in the sleaze but old enough to see what was going on. those were the years that my dad was really into house music and we would listen and dance around to it together in his office. my mom has always been into fashion - those were the days of sparkly pumps peplum blouses and polka dots. a little older, i remember skinny jeans and desperately wanting to look like the girls on here in their american apparel skirts. i was not going clubbing, nor was i particularly into electroclash at the time, but the sleaze touched me.
the thing that i think is so important about indie sleaze is that it's not one specific look like other looks. in all the flash photography, the outfits are messy and sometimes clash but they're all individual. granted, of course, there are staple pieces across the board (leather jackets and boots, metallics, leopard print, denim shorts, ripped tights, etc. etc.) but the way they're all worn is unique to the wearer. nowadays, when subculture is becoming so commodified, i think indie sleaze has some defense against it - its not really about what you wear, its about how you wear it.
the second part of it, of course, is the lifestyle. having the look is one thing - and again, when all you have to do is search the aesthetic on depop anyone can have the look - really living the lifestyle is another. from my perspective, indie sleaze is about living in the moment. sure, there were plenty of cameras around, but in most of the photos the subject isn't looking directly at them. thats the thing that i think is why indie sleaze HAS to come back. its a break from the current panopticon of the cell phone. its going out with your friends and just enjoying it for yourself, not for instagram.
and i think that's also why indie sleaze will struggle to come back in full force. the fashion, the music, it's starting to trend now, but its that last step of letting your phone battery die before you go to the club or the bar or the neighboring dorm or the basement party down the street thats the hard part. but i think its worth it to try.
