What do you think about Penryck and Ullryck?
(unfurls comically large scroll) PENRYCK AND ULLRYCK MY BELOVEDS i have thought so much about them because i feel like their characters had a lot of potential- first things first, they do not get along AT ALL. penryck is constantly at ullryck’s throat and vice versa. a lot of this comes in part from the fact penryck, as the sky dragon, has a reputation for being a powerful hagsfiend and boy does he know and love it. he’s arrogant and chaotic and loves to stir up trouble just for the sake of stirring up trouble! intervening in the political struggles of the n’yrthghar is nothing but a silly little game to him and he takes great joy in pretending to be a “dumb” hagsfiend so he can get close to and manipulate owls (like lord arrin) for his own goals. he’s well respected, but less for his leadership and more for his sheer power and cunning mind. he doesn’t really care about anyone but himself and doesn’t respect those who follow him.
enter ullryck! penryck’s general persona and demeanor infuriate her like NO OTHER. she’s a shrewd strategist and, unlike penryck, a fantastic leader. she’s patient and personable with others (albeit absolutely willing to use them if she needs to), and has ideas for the future of hagsfiends + the drive to pursue them. thus, a guy like penryck who’s really just concerned with his own amusement puts a bad taste in her mouth. she detests the fact he has any followers and wants nothing more than to see him fall- and luckily, she’s a fierce warrior and assassin with a reputation to rival his, so naturally they start butting heads!
i personally believe the reason penryck and ullryck kind of stop being relevant after the coming of hoole is because penryck was manipulating shadyk at the ice palace- after arrin’s defeat (which i like to think was partially penryck’s fault- when things started going south in the battle at the beyond he declared arrin useless and boring and took his hagsfiend faction and left, thus contributing to arrin’s loss) he went on the hunt for another easily manipulated owl and found shadyk, promising him power. notably he only provides shadyk with young and inexperienced hagsfiends rather than his normal faction, as after arrin he views it as a waste of good warriors. this was a big miss steak on his part :)
shadyk naturally ended up boring penryck too, but while he was off messing around, ullryck defected and convinced most of the hagsfiends in his faction to side with her instead by playing into their annoyance at penryck’s attitude and disdain for them- thus forming her own faction and gaining leadership. when penryck returns and finds out ullryck overthrew him, boy is he PISSED at her and the traitors. thus begins a huge hagsfiend vs hagsfiend conflict, with ullryck and penryck’s rivalry turning into an all out battle between their supporters, and penryck trying desperately to defend his reputation of power against ullryck- who unfortunately, is kind of legit a better leader than him 😭 but he knows if he can prove he is more brutal and powerful than she is, then hagsfiends will return to his side, and he switches focus from messing with owls to regaining what he lost- at least until the battle of the long night, which every hagsfiend is kind of thrust into by virtue of it being the big hagsfiends vs owls event. rip
i love them so much. to every hagsfiend: i love you

Some more GoG x TMA headcanons (Part 6/?)
Not strictly GoG×TMA, but I think it would've been kind of funny if Penryck ended up as Lutta's odd uncle. Not strictly because he's associated with her parents, but because he sounds like someone who would be Kreeth's customer.
Tangentially related to point 1: irl crows live in family groups and/or bands made of young crows who left their nests but hadn't started a family of their own yet (as far as I'm aware); my headcanon is that hagsfiends have very similar social organisation and most of Penryck's immediate blood family was killed during the very end of king H'rathmore's reign(because king H'rathmore was an asshole)
And que Lutta saying years later when Penryck is visitong Kreeth for whatever reason "hey, uncle 'Ryk, can I have your clan last name? As my own???" And him responding along the lines of "Why on earth would you want that, kid?!"
"Well, I can't claim my dad's family name because they disowned him, my mom disowned me, and auntie Kreeth said "oh fuck no" when I asked her. So you're the only one left."
Penryck needs some time to process that. (Yes, he is touched to the depths of his soul, but he'd rather die than admit it then and there) And maybe yell at Kreeth for good measure because he somehow ended up second most reliable figure in Lutta's life and he Did Not Sign Up for this. Kreeth is supposed to look after her own experiments, dammit!
He does let Lutta use his family name after that, though.
Lutta and Emerilla both would've loved "Black Sheep Daughter" ("I am my mother's savage daughter' filk lyrics by Piper CJ), but for different reasons. (Yes, the "She birthed a witch when she wanted a lady, she prayed for a child who'll walk with the lord; but I watch the stars and I live by the planets. I cut her dream short with the edge of my sword" bit is playing on repeat in my brain, why do you ask?)
Lutta and Emerilla working together against the king H'rath's court. I want to see those conservative owls blow a whole factiry worth of gaskets.
Way later, Hoole ends up brokering an uneasy peace with hagsfiend clans because he (somewhat accidentally) ended up marrying into de-facto stongest clan. Penryck is Not Impressed™️ with his new in-laws and neither is Kreeth.

Okay, so, the hagsfiend headcanons >:D
First, I am a simple person: I see dragons, I have to at least check out the idea, so when Lasky introduced Penryck "the Sky Dragon" and then did so little with him, I was very disappointed and made up a few headcanons about him:
- in the First Collier it is mentioned that Arryn had a son; my headcanon is that Penryck met Arryn's son first and he, in turn, convinced Arryn to hire Penryck (because I doubt Arryn would've considered hiring hagsfiends all on his own, he would've tried to get an owl warlord on his side instead)
- Penryck is actually better at diplomacy than Arryn, and he was trying to recruit some of Arryn's generals during the second half of The coming of Hoole; that's one of the reasons there are rumours about them going separate ways at the beginning of To be a King (also, his POV in the Coming of Hoole is him mentally rolling eyes at both Arryn's racist shit and his incompetence as a strategist, and I wish there was more of villainous flashbacks because trying to reverse engineer Sklardrog's personality off one pov and a handful of lines is painful)
- A bit more speculative one: Penryck crossed paths with Theo's father and uncle(possibly killed or ordered to kill the latter). Theo asks Grank if he's sure that Penryck killed the high king ‐ why specifically him and not any other warlord? Either Sklardrog's reputation is that scary or Theo had a personal reason to fear him. (This bit never came up again in the books, though, so it stays a speculation)
- Hoole's first time using firesight was a big missed opportunity. Imagine if he saw hagsfiends just living their lives and started doubting what Grank had told him?
- A rather sad one: I thought a lot about Ygreek and Pleek. A lot. (Mostly ranging between "Who hurt you, Grank?" and "Who hurt you, Kathryn?") Because the more I thought about it, the more it felt(at least the translation) like a part of Ygreek's desire to have a child comes from wanting to fit a "proper family" mold; we don't get a similar in-depth introspection about kids from Pleek's point of view, but since Grank picks him out instantly when he looks into the Ember, I headcanon that Pleek comes from a noble family (probably not as rich as Arryn, Siv or Grank himself), and he probably heard plenty of that "your purpose is to have an heir and pass on the family name one day" nonsense before he met Ygreek. So they both have their share of internalised issues about having kids.
(Oof, that got wordy)
I LOVE DRAGONS. I agree, I wish Penryck's character had been explored more. He does seem to be better at diplomacy from his short conversation with Lord Arrin. Lord Arrin's character pretty much boils down to "I want the throne" and "I want a wife," so it makes sense that Penryck was pulling all the strings behind the scenes. In terms of appearance I'd like to think Penryck had claws on his wings, perhaps scaled talons and very long ear-tufts to the point where they looked like horns.
I just think it's funny that owls are convinced hagsfiends are evil when all the hagsfiends in the legends books were hired by owl lords to overthrow King H'rath. The hagsfiends were definitely taking advantage of the situation there, but it's strange that they're considered more villainous than the owl lords who 1) have a gizzard so they know right from wrong, and 2) still chose to do wrong.
I believe it was confirmed that Pleek was a noble lord, which makes me respect his character more because like you pointed out, he probably faced a ton of pressure from his family to have an heir, and also backlash for falling in love with the enemy. When the war starts he would most likely have lost all his noble titles for consorting with a hagsfiend. He gave up so much for Ygryk, and it feels like a further punishment that they can't have a normal family together. Ygryk would probably also feel a lot of guilt for causing her mate to be cut off and shunned by his kind. Pleek and Ygryk may have been horrible parents to Lutta, but they also didn't have the best situation.

Thank you for your answer, your headcanons are very interesting and lore-friendly!✨
(I also almost thought that it was all romantic tension for Ullryck and Penryck XD)
Do you have ideas what will happen to Penryck and Ullryck later, after the Long Night and the Battle for the Ice Palace?
woohoo finally getting around to answering asks!!!
in regards to what happens to the two after the events of to be a king, i honestly think it could go different ways- we have the fact that theo led the surviving hagsfiends to the middle kingdom to mellow them out and turn them into dragon owls, which by default would likely include penryck and ullryck, but i feel like every single hagsfiend following him without question is dependent on the idea that they’re all “dumb” like the narrative tries to portray them (which i don’t agree with 🙄). realistically, some could certainly be fooled or perhaps even realize that it might be too good to be true, but follow theo anyways out of a desire to live in peace (ygryk could certainly be one of the latter). but others would definitely be skeptical and suspicious!
penryck and ullryck are definitely more on the skeptical side to me, maybe even trying to warn others that it’s a trap and convince them not to go. maybe they put aside their differences and work together in one last attempt to stop owls from fully claiming the n’yrthghar, but after all the battles and theo’s actions, hagsfiend numbers have dwindled too low for anything to be done. in that case, it’s possible that they could flee to the s’yrthghar with other hagsfiends who refused to follow theo to try and lay low for the rest of their lives, but eventually are discovered and/or die out to become the restless hagsfiend scrooms that torment owls in the present day 👀
overall there’s really not a happy ending for hagsfiends of the past i feel 😭 however i’m of the firm belief the hagsfiend eggs in book 15 should NOT have been destroyed, but rather the young hagsfiends be raised in a good environment and allowed to coexist with owls and join society, putting the mutual hatred that characterized the past to rest :’) there could have been a better future!!!

Alright, some more GoG × TMA headcanons, part 5(i think)/?
This au has a playlist! By me. On youtube. It is a work in progress and it is mostly shanties now (becase of Ezylryb. He taught his chaw the shanties. This man knows so many shanties and you cannot change my mind). Song suggestions are very welcome!
Every time the collier/all-weather chaw has to camp out near the shores of Hoolemere after a training flight, there is a shanty singing session (temporarily abandoned during the Siege). Otulissa went from a miserable bundle of feathers tapping her foot to the beat to a shanty enjoyer - almost smacking Soren with a rare edition of "Shanties and somgs of the Northern Kingdoms" penned by Lyze of Kiel at one point because Soren is very dense and doesn't pick up that Ezylryb is prepairing him to take over as the new shantyowl.
"Hell's coming with me" by Poor man's poison but it is Striga and Coryn summoning Theo's ghost specifically to yell at him (may or may not spiral into Striga burning the Panqua palace down via Desolation powers)
"Pressure cracks", also by Poor man's poison, but it is Penryck and Ullryck going their separate ways. No, I don't ship them, I headcanon them as bi/ace solidarity friendship. I want to see ending friendship get the same gravity that romantic heartbreak gets in songs. Also, they both said a version of "Go ahead, make my day, punk!" at some point in my headcanon.
Thora Plonk lives. She's scarred and marked by The Slaughter, but she lives and kicks ass.

Thanks for your previous answer, it was very interesting! :>
Do you have any headcanons about what exactly Penryck and Ullryck and their factions of hagsfiends were trying to achieve? It is said about Penryck that he wanted to be someone more than the king of Nyrthgar, but without specifics, and nothing is known about Ullryck at all
i like to believe they actually both did have a similar goal, which was to drive owls from the n’yrthghar and make it into a kingdom for hagsfiends alone (much like most owls wanted the opposite, and ultimately achieved it). penryck has a few thoughts in the coming of hoole about wanting to become not only king of the n’yrthghar but a “god of nachtmagen”, however i’ve always taken the latter to be less literal and more just him being full of himself. he also doesn’t want the responsibilities that would come with being a king at all, but he IS attracted to the attention and power it promises, and power is his main concern. he believes himself to be above all others and will stop at nothing to officially get himself in that position- thus making the n’yrthghar into a hagsfiend kingdom becomes his goal solely so that he can be at the top as its undeniable, heroic ruler. he certainly needs others to make this a reality, but to him they’re nothing more than tools, especially if they’re owls, who he refuses to believe are that big of a deal. hoole this, hoole that, claiming the so-called king’s power will be a piece of cake for him!
on the other talon, ullryck’s goal is a hagsfiend kingdom because she wants to protect her kind- with hagsfiend vs. owl conflicts on the rise after the invention of battle claws, hoole retrieving the ember, and the establishment of the great ga’hoole tree, it would be foolish not to view owls as a serious threat (her looking directly at penryck as she says this). ullryck believes that, strategic and skilled as she is, she is the one fit to lead them in a great victory against owls, and that unlike penryck she has actually proven herself to be worthy. many hagsfiends agree with her, so her following grows quickly, not only because she’s powerful and renowned on par with penryck but because she actually makes the hags who choose to follow her feel respected, valued, and hopeful. though they’re aware they pursue the same goal, much of the resultant hagsfiend infighting is caused by disagreement over who should be king/queen once the owls are defeated- the mighty and brutal sky dragon with his legendary reputation of power, or the sharp-minded assassin and strategic leader who promises a safe haven for all. and then they all get so into fighting over that it’s impossible for both sides to actually get anywhere. rip
(as an extra note, some hagsfiends believe that their rivalry is romantic tension, and they should just become mates and rule together 😭 (a notion that both ullryck and penryck would have their heads for), and others, like ygryk, refuse to choose a side or involve themselves as they wish for peace and acceptance between hagsfiends and owls instead)
one last thought is that i think when the long night happens both penryck + ullryck’s factions would see the initial battle for the ice palace (between hoole + the guardians and arrin + elgobad’s forces) as the perfect opportunity to launch a counterattack on all of them. this creates a massive three-way battle for a time, but then the division between the hagsfiend factions and inability to coordinate leaves them at a disadvantage that ultimately ends with major hagsfiend losses. good job guys

Some more GoG and TMA crossover thoughts:
Hoole using Beholding powers to counter veiled insults and/or backhanded compliments - not out of active malice, but out of genuine confusion(at least the first few times): he's a very straightforward guy, so royal courtiers trying to play emotional 5d chess during a conversation would be annoying at best and deeply upsetting at worst for him. So, when he finds himself thinking about another conversation with an older noble where they were seemingly polite, but The Vibes(tm) felt off, and another courtier tries to talk to him, Hoole is having None Of That and tells the courtier "Just say exactly what you mean, for goodness sake!". It works like a charm, but the courtier is rattled to their bones afterwards (and probably spilled way too much tea about everyone's plans out of sheer anxiety).
Also: Hoole approaching avatars of other fears with an open mind - he pretty much thinks of them as potential friends/allies unless they prove themselves too hostile. (He also never really got the memo that avatar powers aren't supposed to manifest as early as they did for him - sometimes he unintentionally scares people by showing off).
Not unique to this AU, but: everyone roasting Lord Arrin. You know how in Elden Ring, when you sneak into Stormveil castle and talk to NPCs, they all say how they hate Godrick and how terrible of a lord he is? That's how Arrin's allies would talk about him. He's not a total idiot, he's actually pretty good at being a noble and running a domain, but he is also very good at getting at everyone's nerves and not noticing it until its far too late.
Arrin picking absolutely worst people to get into verbal duels with and getting his ass handed to him on a platter. He once tried insulting Hoole with "Where are your manners, have you been raised by wolves?" only to get "Why, yes; say hello to all my honorary cousins! *wide gesture at the wolves of the Beyond*" followed by the slyest I see what you're doing and I'm having none of that look from Hoole. This isn't even the first time Arrin tried "Have you been raised by [insert species]?" line and got destroyed with the comeback.
Seriously, this guy gets roasted behind his back so much(particularly by his hagsfiend allies), and most of it is deserved.
Speaking of which: Penryck keeps the somewhat unstable gathering of clan warriors and stragglers from fighting each other or Arrin's army. This man is going to have a back pain from carrying this alliance so far. He originally planned to team up with Arrin's son, Baldr(he has no canon name, so I picked one), but that didn't work quite as well as he thought: Baldr supports Penryck's plans at Arrin's meetings, but they are still kind of isolated from most other warlords (they're winning the younger ones over, but it is a slow process)
Penryck actually worked with Ullryck, Ygreek and Pleek before Arrin's rebellion - just not at the same time. Once Arrin made it clear that he's hiring hagsfiends, Penryck reached out to them - recruiting the best assasin and the best tracker in the field (technically, he's also marked by The Hunt and can track people pretty well, but his main fear entity is still the Slaughter, so he'll gladly outsource tracking and chasing to someone he trusts.) Not really related to the Fears, but: he has an accent - it is pretty subtle, but he sometimes puts on an exagerrated version of it specifically to annoy Arrin.
Kreeth is both a local cryptid of the Ice Narrows and a very common point of connection between other hagsfiends: she deals in Fear-affiliated artifacts, among other things. According to the wildest rumours, she can remove Fear marks - she never gives a clear answer if you ask her, though. (She can't actually remove the marks, but can sort of cover them up with new ones)
