Got 3 cute little bugs in a YouTube short today. A Goldenrod Soldier Beetle, a Ladybug and a Tarnished Plant Bug. There is also a Japanese Beetle but it is sort of hidden on the back of the Purple Passion Flower and doesn't move much.

What I believe is a Goldenrod Soldier Beetle or Pennsylvania Leatherwing (Chauliognathus pensylvanicus) out on the Mints this afternoon.

What Bug Is This? 51: Goldenrod Soldier Beetles

Common name(s): Goldenrod soldier beetles, Pennsylvania leatherwings

Scientific name: Chauliognathus pensylvanicus

Can it hurt me?: Nope

Can it hurt my plants?: On the contrary, they are doubly good for your plants! Firstly, they are pollinators for several species native to the United States including goldenrod and milkweed. More occasionally, they’ll feed on other small insects like aphids. Even as larvae they are predators rather than feeding on plants. Consider them a boon to your garden.

Should I kill it?: Please don’t

Anything else I should know?: Despite being beetles, they are very soft bodied insects. If you handle them, be gentle.

Pennsylvania leatherwing friend!

Apparently these little guys can be infected by a mind control fungus!!

According to the wiki :

“Adult C. pensylvanicus may be infected by the fungus Eryniopsis lampyridarum. Shortly before death, by unknown mechanisms, dying infected beetles tightly clamp their mandibles into flower heads; 15-22 hours later, the fungus caused dead beetles to raise their elytra and expand their metathoracic wings in order to maximise infection of other beetles”

Two-Lined Leatherwing Beetle

Atalantycha bilineata

The two-lined leather-wing is a species of soldier beetle in the family Cantharidae. Like most soldier beetles, it eats other insects, but is also a great pollinator. Glands by the rear end can secrete cantharidin, a substance that can cause blisters. Two-lined Leather-wings are great garden friends that are best left alone to do their duty.

Some of Soldier Beetle (Chauliognathus... spp), I suspect it is a  Goldenrod Soldier Beetle, AKA- Pennsylvania Leatherwing (Chauliognathus pensylvanicus) out on the Strawberry bushes this morning.

I seem to be on a bit of a beetle streak.

I wanted this to be the similar Goldenrod Leatherwing (Chauliognathus pensylvanicus) because it is on goldenrod and it would have been my second pennsylvanicus post in a row, but no luck.
