#Penelope was a Spartan

Okay but what people need to remember is that Penelope was a Spartan. She was the daughter of the king and queen of Sparta. Even if Odysseus hadn't shown up, she was not going to end up with one of the suitors.
She set up challenges that she knew the suitors would never pass. She didn't care that her son wasn't combat worthy cause she, herself, was more then worthy.
And just a reminder as a Spartan she probably worshipped Ares, the god that was most common worshipped in Sparta, also the god of war and protecter of women. No matter what was going to happen she was either going to die fighting off the suitors or die waiting for Odysseus to return home.

Odysseus, full of worry his wife won’t love him after learning what he did: I slayed a bunch of men and monsters without mercy to get home to you
Penelope, his wife, who is from Sparta, kicking her feet and twirling her hair: My love we’re already married, you don’t have to propose again

whoever can string my husbands old bow...
i fear i wont be surviving the ithaca saga :') notes and stuff under cut
for my dearest @aria-upside-down go check out her challenge cover!
--
posting her majesty after some peer reviews lol. slightly unfinished and not at all what i expected, but still quite happy with the results :D
i messed up the line art and fixed it digitally as i do usually, and then with the scraps decided to mess around with hair and facial features (i drew her neck down only) and then had the genius idea of smooshing them together lol and was pleasantly surprised:
was going to post le first one originally, and then better minds prevailed (thank u moots <3) and so i fixed the post-squished penelope a little; the bow string was (and still is lol) a little off, darkened her hair smoothed over the lines etc.
again not perfect lol (had no references save for this fresco) and improvised her make up, i did look up recurve bows and theyre majestic, this is the one that caught my eye first)
anyway enjoy biblically accurate lego hand banana peels lmao
#not my best but im happy :D#that last line tho#probably the wildest thing ive ever written XD#epic the musical#greek mythology#penelope#penelope of sparta#banana peels#love my girl#look forward to drawing more of her and the spartan trio in minoan dresses theyre so prettyyy#although chitons are easier to draw lol#my art#THE ANATOMY LOOKS KINDA GOOD IM SO PROUD

Odysseus of troy au: How did the news of their missing king and prince spread across Ithaca?
If the Underworld could hear Penelope's cry of rage & despair, you can bet Ithaca heard it first.

Okay yes odysseus absolutely fumbled first meeting with penelope. He was an absolute goof. Tripping over himself, blushing, loosing games because penelope waved at him, getting caught mid lie ect ect
But have we considered penelope was equally a mess?

I know it’s probably been said before somewhere but I just find it interesting that the tactic Penelope uses to keep the suitors at bay is promising that she’ll choose someone once she finishes weaving a burial shroud (and then promptly undoing it every night for about three years).
She chooses to use her skills in weaving, one of the divine domains of Athena.
I am still have yet to actually read the Odyssey so I don’t know if the original source material clarifies anything akin to it being Athena who tells Penelope to do the weaving trick, but if not I find this a very interesting coincidence.
Athena was Odysseus’s patron goddess, but it seems that he wasn’t the only one in his marriage who followed Athena’s teachings.
#greek mythology#epic the musical#the ithaca saga#penelope of ithaca#athena#Odysseus and Penelope are a trickster power couple#I know it was a limited run time but I think it would have been very cool if Jorge gave us a scene of Penelope and Athena.#But then again#Penelope was Spartan#Maybe Athena just didn’t want to interact with someone from her brother’s city

Sometimes when I watch Epic the musical, and people depict Penelope as being smaller than Odysseus, I have this thought like:
"Wow... Odysseus is already our short king. She must be a TINY!!!"
So I always appreciate it when the artists draw her taller than him XD
ALL HAIL OUR SHORT KING ODYSSEUS! AND HIS GIANT SPARTON WIFE, OUR QUEEN PENELOPE!!!
#epic the musical#Odysseus#Penelope#Odysseus the short king#love him for that#and Penelope his GIANT spartan wife#damn they're so in love#its beautiful#I'll cry over them#that said anyone who makes anamatics and art in general#full respect#you're all the best#know I love you#would you fall in love with me again#the challenge

ok i know theres no animation of it but ive got this idea of sequence of events in my head for the Ithaca Saga
like with The Challenge, right? when it gets to her issuing the challenge, the image in my head shows her standing at the end of the axes- so if any of them had managed it and their aim was true, the arrow would sail through the axes and kill her. because 'i'd rather die than be without the best of you'
And in that image, there's Ody- waiting in the shadows. smiling to himself because that's his queen. thats his love. and he knows none of them can string his bow, so he sneaks away to prepare
and then the next image in my head is him checking in on the Suitors during Hold Them Down. and Penelope's words echo in his mind; 'let the arrow fly, once you know your aim is true'
so he goes to the bow- abandoned by the wall.. and strings it. and lets it fly.
like if i ever have the motivation/artistic ability to draw this i might but the visual has been stuck in my head- especially a soft, echoing reprise of 'let the arrow fly' moments before he shoots.
like the vision is visioning, y'know??

au-niverse expansion
hello had a thought this morning (i need to stop having them lol) abt a potential new angle of the oikoi au where hermione is sent to live with penelope when helen is abducted!
she knows her 'auntie' penelope and refuses to let anyone else be her primary caretaker. her father tries to reason with her to stay at home where she grew up, where its familiar, and where everyone knows her and will seek to protect her, but she refuses.
he cant stand seeing the tears that well in her eyes, just like helens. he arranges a convoy to send her and a very apologetic letter to the king and queen of ithaca, who have their own newborn to worry about.
shenanigans ensue. idk i really want to explore the 10 years of troy from penelopes perspective esp ruling a kingdom while raising her son (and now niece) and keeping herself together. and also another 10 years that is much darker and heavier and tackles her trauma bc she too became a monster rawr rawr rawr at some point, just differently.
--
and then hermione is sent on her merry way home when menelaus and helen send for her after writing a letter confirming their victory and shipwreck i think it was (diomedes had kindly written to her telling her the war was over and the ships had set sail homewards but she hadnt heard from anyone and the horizons were empty).
anyway now with newfound hope odysseus is merely having sat nav issues lol. she loads hermiones ship with gifts to welcome helen home including plenty of fabric and pieces of her own design
(something i reeeally want to add lol is that telemachus goes with her after winning a bet with penelope to let him go, and well he is his fathers son so he trots off and has a grand week with his aunt and uncle. menelaus tells him of his fathers cunning blah blah tele is even more pumped to meet his dad omg poor bby).
and then when he returns he suddenly finds several guests?? penelope is shook and trying to handle the situation with grace. tele is half hiding behind her and holding onto her robes, a hand is on his head and the other over he heart.
the 'guests' only increase in number and nothing is quite the same. at least his aunt ctimene and cousin eupehmia are still here. only a few years down the line they too are forced away and it really is tele and pen against 108 horrid men whos audacity only grows with their appetites.
AND THEN when tele goes to search for his dad the gut punch is the parallel of menelaus being like son ur father is the most badass lil shit ive ever known to son idk how to tell you but but hes not coming home. idk lots of crying here
the point is its all told through penelopes perspective and several external povs bc those are fun and give u, well, new perspectives XD
currently toturing all my blorbos. let them weep (harder)
