Today I did some shopping that, despite today being Saturday, qualified for Black Friday deals. Whew! You just never know when retail stores are going to have another sale.

One of my favorite stores in Minneapolis is Nokomis Shoes. It occupies three small storefronts in a quiet South Minneapolis neighborhood. Beside a huge selection of top quality shoes, it has some nice clothes, bags, socks, gifts, etc. All are nicer brands. I bought this winter hat I'm currently wearing.

A Pendleton sweater begged to go home with me, but I wasn't sure I really needed it. Maybe tomorrow I'll go back, since the store is not far from the airport dog park. The young people who work at Nokomis Shoes could easily face off with the Chick-fil-A youngsters in the championship of picking the nicest, most helpful without being annoying, pleasant employees.

I had not been to the range in a while, so later I took time to punch 150 holes in sheets of paper. Two young men in the lane next to me had rented some hand cannon. Its noise was jarring. Just as I was going to go add foam ear plugs under my over-the-ear protection they switched to a small caliber pistol. I think they didn't want to spend a lot of money on expensive ammunition and only went through 50 of the big ones.

This evening we're getting a light dusting of snow. The yard is still greenish, but the driveway is white. It's seems extra quiet outside. This puts me in a mellow mood.

I've got a small steak cooking in the sous vide. With it I'm having this Bourbon County Stout stout from Chicago's Goose Island Brewery. The label says this is the O.G. of bourbon barrel aged stouts.

The label instructs to enjoy in a snifter. Being a rule follower, I will use the correct glassware. It's not a big bottle (and I only bought one), so my small snifter will make me think I'm having two servings instead of one.

Gosh, I am still wearing this hat inside the house. It's super warm.

EXCLUSIVE: Patrick Fischler (American Fiction) & Julian Black Antelope (Prey) have been tapped for recurring roles in NCIS: Origins, CBS’ prequel to the venerable procedural, which has a straight-to-series order for the 2024-2025 broadcast season.

Austin Stowell, Mariel Molino, Kyle Schmid, Tyla Abercrumbie and Diany Rodriguez star in the CBS Studios-produced series executive produced and narrated by Mark Harmon.

Origins begins in 1991, years prior to the events of NCIS, and chronicles Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ younger years. In the prequel, Gibbs (Stowell) starts his career as a newly minted special agent at the fledgling NIS Camp Pendleton office where he forges his place on a gritty, ragtag team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks (Schmid).

Fischer will play NCIS Special Agent in Charge Cliff Walker, who oversees the fledgling NIS Pendleton Office. Constantly seeing his little-known agency pushed aside by bigger fish, Walker puts his career on the line to earn NIS Pendleton the respect it deserves.

Antelope will portray Chief Medical Examiner Kai Blackrock, who is at the top of his game, working out of the busy San Diego County M.E.’s Office. Though he appears unflappable, Blackrock’s complicated ties to NIS force him to face his own vulnerabilities.

Fischler was most recently seen opposite Jeffrey Wright in American Fiction, as well as Netflix’s Fair Play opposite Alden Ehrenreich. He also recurred on HBO’s Barry in last year’s final season. His other credits include series regular roles on Syfy’s Happy! and on Disney+’s The Right Stuff. 

Antelope was most recently seen as Chief Kehetu, leader of the band of Comanches, in the original film Prey on Hulu. Later this year he will be seen in a major recurring role on Hulu’s upcoming series Washington Black. His other previous credits include The Flash and Grendel.

September 7th 2023 | Cores for Heroes Submission | M. Ford | 1963 Beetle

I served in the USMC from 05-09. I went through boot camp at MCRD San Diego and School of Infantry at Camp Pendleton CA. I was sent to 7th Marines in 29 palms the end of January and February 14th we left for Iraq. I had to learn everything on the go, baptism by fire. My 1st tour was in a town called Husaybah Iraq, on the boarder of Syria, and the Euphrates river. Was a wild west kind of town. My 2nd tour was in a small town called Kubaysah, just outside of Hit Iraq. My journey took me to Baghdad to testify against two bad guys we caught throwing grenades at our patrols. The best part of that trip was swimming in Sadam Hussain's pool, and i have the picture to prove it! My 3rd and last tour was in Karma and NE Fallujah, sadly having to leave my post early I was sent home due to my Dad's untimely passing. Upon arrival back in the States I also lost my great grandmother within two days of being home, grateful I was able to tell her goodbye, wish I could have had that closure with my Dad. My Dad and Uncle Dave brought me up with a love of cars and Racing. My first car was a 69 bug that I drove while in HS and sold it before I joined the USMC. I regret selling it to this day and no pictures remain of it. My favorite past-time was cruising in my 69 bug all over the Columbia River Gorge corridor and county back roads. After moving from Oregon to Texas I decided it was time to build something. So I found a 1963 that I am currently restoring from the ground up. The theme for this bug will be USMC, going to call it the "Teuful Hunden" bug or as most people know it "Devil Dog". It will be painted red, with gold doors and rims, the Marine Corps colors. This build is really helping me find parts of me I left over seas. It's going to be a long build being a disabled veteran and on a budget. I have been ordering all the new body panels first. Was going to order a pro beam with disk brakes and a Freeway flyer with disk brakes from Air kewld but having a chance to win them is really awesome of you guys. Thirty-seventh Congress of the United States of America;

At the third Session,

Begun and held at the city of Washington, on Monday, the first day of December, eighteen hundred and sixty two.

An Act

For the admission of the State of "West Virginia" into the Union, and for other purposes.

Whereas, the people inhabiting that portion of Virginia known as West Virginia did, by a Convention assembled in the city of Wheeling on the twenty-sixth of November, eighteen hundred and sixty-one, frame for themselves a constitution with a view of becoming a separate and independent State; and whereas, at a general election held in the counties composing the territory aforesaid, on the third day of May last, the said constitution was approved and adopted by the qualified voters of the proposed State; and whereas, the legislature of Virginia, by an act passed on the thirteenth day of May eighteen hundred and sixty two, did five its consent to the formation of a new State within the jurisdiction of the said State of Virginia, to be known by the name of West Virginia, and to embrace the following names counties, to wit: Hancock, Brooke, Ohio, Marshall, Wetzel, Marion, Monongalia, Preston, Taylor, Tyler, Pleasants, Ritchie, Doddridge, Harrison, Wood, Jackson, Wirt, Roane, Calhoun, Gilmer, Barbour, Tucker, Lewis, Braxton, Upshur, Randolph, Mason, Putnam, Kanawha, Clay, Nicholas, Cabell, Wayne, Boone, Logan, Wyoming, Mercer, McDowell, Webster, Pocahontas, Fayette, Raleigh, Greenbriar, Monroe, Pendleton, Hardy, Hampshire and Morgan; and whereas, both the Convention and the Legislature, aforesaid, have requested that the new State for be admitted into the Union, and the constitution aforesaid, being republican in form, Congress doth hereby consent that the said forty eight counties may be formed into a separate and the independent State. Therefore, Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the State of West Virginia be, and is hereby declared to be one of the United States of American, and admitted into the Union on an equal footing with the original States in all respects whatever, and until the next general census shall be entitled to three members in the House of Representatives of the United States: Provided always, That this Act shall not take effect until after the proclamation of the President of the United States, hereinafter provided for. It being represented to Congress that since the Convention of the twenty-sixth of November eighteen hundred and sixty-one, that framed and proposed the constitution for the said State of West Virginia, the people thereof have expressed a wish to change the seventh section of the eleventh article of said constitution by striking out the same and inserting the following it its place, viz: "The children of slaves born within the limited of this State after the fourth day of July eighteen hundred and sixty-three shall be free; and that all slaves within the said State who shall, at the time aforesaid be under the age of ten years, shall be free when they arrive at"

"the age of twenty-one years; and all slaves over ten and under twenty-one years, shall be free when they arrive at the age of twenty-five years; and no slaves shall be permitted to come into the State for permanent residence therein." Therefore, Sec 2. Be it further enacted. That whenever the people of West Virginia shall, through this said Convention, and by a vote to be taken at an election to be held within the limits of the said State, at such time as the Convention may provide, make and ratify the change aforesaid, and properly certify the same under the hand of the president of the Convention, it shall be lawful for the President of the United States to issue his proclamation stating the fact, and therefore this act shall take effect, and be in force from and after sixty days from the date of said proclamation.

Hey, Mariam! Sorry for takin' so long to get back to you. Things have been a bit all over the place on my end lately, but thank you for the ask!

I don't wanna give too much away, cuz I have some fun connections that I'm gonna bring to the table. Mainly, I have my three boys. Christian, Jimmy, and Matthew. The first two (my Charlie Hunnam and Garrett Hedlund muses) are brothers. Matt (my Boyd Holbrook muse) is Christian's best-friend that he meets in his unit while fighting for Ulysses S. Grant. That puts them around 21 yrs old during the Cold Harbor War, which was in 1864.

From there, the details of their timeline and story is getting worked out, but eventually, they start traveling across country. Putting the boys around 35 years of age once they do get to where they're going. They're set to be in Santa Fe around 1876. Eventually ending up around Pendleton, Oregon in 1878-1880. That's altered, too, cuz the Pendleton Round-Up was founded in 1910, but I'm changing that timeline to fit my story a bit better.

There are variations to actual events and people from that era, keeping this more AU, but some very well known ones are going to be added. I will say that I know, for sure, that Josiah "Doc" Scurlock will get tossed into the mix. He'll be a big influence on Christian and will end up joining them in Oregon after leaving Billy the Kid's gang after the Lincoln County War. It'll be a bit different from history, but also similar, since Doc did leave Billy's crew after that with his wife. He'll also be somewhat similar to how he was portrayed in "Young Guns". I know those films are inaccurate to the actual history of who that guy was, so I'm stealing a bit of both fact and fiction.

I have plans for all kinds of people to throw into their travels, because the places they'll end up, along with the timelines of their journey's, will put them smack dab in the middle of some of the most notorious showdowns and bumping into some of the most infamous outlaws of the Wild West.

I'm not able to sit and write very much these days, just because I don't have a good computer chair and am constantly busy. Plus, my health (mainly my brain from epilepsy) has been draining me more than it used to. So sadly, I don't know how soon I'll have anything substantial to post. I'm just playing with outlines, research, and setting up a basic timeline for now.

One thing I can tell you for certain is that my title of my Wild West AU is "There Have Always Been Crows". It's both giving a nod to Charlie Hunnam's "Jax Teller" character from Sons of Anarchy, as well as to my muse, Matt, in his biker AU. He's obsessed with crows in that verse and feeds them regularly. There will be different references to crows off and on in the Wild West AU, starting with a battle scene and then crows bein' brought up at various moments down the line. For instance, Jimmy mistaking a raven for a crow; having the birds steal food out of the guys' packs while they go take a leak while riding across country; random stuff like that. Eventually, the crows will have a deeper meaning and significance for the end of the storyline. Already got that scene in my head.

As for world building, I'm sticking to as much of the legitimate history as possible, but bein' careful with specifics. Especially, where the Chinese immigrants and Native Americans are involved in the creation of Pendleton, Oregon, as well as bringing in more women farmhands. There's a lot of misinformation and hidden truths that the settlers tried to cover up, but also some very cool factoids that were written into the history books. Like that it was much more common for women to be working ranches by themselves, because the men were off at war, or helping to mine and work the steel mills in order to create more guns and supplies for troops.

Also, Pendleton was one of the first, colonized towns in the Pacific Northwest that had Chinese immigrants running their own shops. I'm having it set that Doc Scurlock's wife ends up opening and running her own clothing store in town, since he's friends with the boys who are helping to make that town become a wildly huge success story with their assistance in building up the rodeo.

I should probably stop, cuz I'm giving a lot of info away. LMAO! I get chatty when I get passionate and giddy about somethin' like this. Heh! it’s wip wednesday so here’s a blurb from my andyeddie pre flowers & tattoos au fic so there is actual proof out in the world that it exists outside of my head

Eddie. Not Edward. Never Edward,

Not always Eddie either. Sometimes he was Hillbilly.

Even before all that, before the familiarity, the level of trust Andy experienced with so very few other people, he was simply Sergeant Jones. 

The first time Andy saw Eddie Hillbilly Jones it had been brief, a quick introduction by Captain Harper who took it upon himself to show the green lieutenant around Camp Lejeune.

He was the newest member of Echo company in the Second Marine Regiment- which was exciting -and was set to lead Echo’s weapons platoon- which was less exciting. It was unusual for a fresh second lieutenant to run the weapons platoon, as it required more expertise than a regular rifle platoon but when Captain Harper asked if he’d be comfortable taking over how could he say anything but yes? The marine corps was all about rising to the occasion and Andy knew that this would simply be the first of many instances he had to push through his anxieties to lead. 

After a meeting in his office, Captain Harper took him around the base and occasionally pointed out people worth knowing. Near the end of the quick tour, the two paused near the parade deck, and together they watched briefly as a sergeant led enlisted men through drills. 

“Oh, that’s Sergeant Jones,” Captain Harper informed him. “Solid as they come. Might hear some of the men call him Hillbilly.”

Andy wanted to ask why ‘Hillbilly’ but Captain Harper was already moving on. Andy spared the tall, lean man one more look before he went to catch up with his CO, fighting the feeling he got suddenly in his gut that he should’ve stayed watching that man for a moment or two longer.

During his stint in weapons platoon, Andy and Eddie never really crossed paths. It made sense with him in weapons and Eddie, he learned later, was an infantry school instructor, but he still saw Eddie around enough to never fully let the man leave his mind, heard enough about the man through the grapevine to already have a mental picture of the man without ever speaking to him. Every time Eddie was within Andy’s eyesight he got that same, strange feeling in his gut, the one that told him to stay, the one that made him feel like something was pulling him towards the other. Now, Andy was a firm believer in following one's gut but this had to be some sort of malfunction of his internal compass. He couldn’t get bogged down all because of one man he had never even spoken to before. 

Eventually there came a time when Andy realized he hadn’t seen nor heard Sergeant Jones as he led new recruits about the base. After casually asking someone about it, he was informed that Jones left for a specialty school in preparation to transfer.

“Oh, good for him,” Andy said calmly

It’s for the best, Andy told himself. 

Andy tried to convince himself that was it, that he was happy for Sergeant Jones, and come next week Jones probably wouldn’t ever cross his mind again. He tried, but for whatever reason, he couldn’t seem to shake the feeling that he had made some huge misstep along the way.

Never reaching out to Eddie at Lejeune might’ve felt like a missed opportunity but after three years, promotions, and a transfer across the county, it felt like missing an entire flight of stairs when Andy walked into the Fifth Marine Regiment office at Pendleton just to find none other than Eddie Hillbilly Jones staring right at him with fresh second lieutenant bars on his collar.

A Marine is in custody after authorities found a 14-year-old girl in the barracks of a California base in late June after she had run away from her grandparent's home earlier in the month, according to reports.

Melissa Aquino of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department first confirmed the news to NBC San Diego, saying the 14-year-old girl's grandmother reported her missing four days after her initial disappearance June 9. Aquino said the girl had run away from home before, but "always returned home quickly."

The girl was found June 28 by military police at the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, California. Neither the girl nor the Marine in custody have been publicly identified.

According to Capt. Charles Palmer, the director of communications strategy and operations for the 1st Marine Logistics Group, the Marine was taken into custody for questioning June 28 by Naval Criminal Investigative Services, a military law enforcement agency, he told NBC. Palmer said the Marine has not been formally charged, and remains in the custody of his command.

The sheriff's department said the teen has been returned to her grandmother, CNN reported.
