A million terrible possibilities raced through his mind, each one more dramatic and gruesome than the last. His heart hammered against his ribcage, threatening to crack the bones. “Mo Ran,” he said slowly, “I think you should tell me what that does, now.”

Xue Zhengyong sends Chu Wanning and Mo Ran on a mission to find a specific ingredient for some concoction of his wife’s. Chu Wanning is torn between rejoicing at the chance to spend time alone with Mo Ran... and grieving over the very same thing.

But, well, it’s just flowers. What could go wrong, right? (Spoiler alert: it’s sex pollen.)

Over the years, the smell of polyester and cheap foam padding has given way to an equally aromatic blend of Chu Wanning's haitang blossom perfume, spilled coffee, and white lithium grease. Chu Wanning herself is always perfectly dressed without a stain in sight. Even right now, her head tucked onto one folded arm, the other loosely gripping her tablet, she looks so formal.

Mo Ran gently rests a hand on Chu Wanning's socked ankle where it peeks out of those tailored white trousers. She really should behave herself.

Chu Wanning is sure he agreed to the whole idea; he's just unclear on when. Things got hazy around the point when Mo Ran turned him around by the shoulders, got down on his knees and...well. Apparently he'd skipped breakfast that morning.

When he returned to his senses, his clothes were all neatly tucked into place, not a stain on them, and a charmingly pink sexual aid was nestled comfortably up his--ahem, inside him.

He knows that this is where all his chances come to an end.

New/revised/whatever- List of stuff

Egos (Marks/Jacks) that I have written for or at least actually have thought about HCS/other universes for: (Just some brief rambles about them, please don't hesitate to ask about them :3)

-Anti, Two takes really, I like him soft, like him mean, hes just fun to write, plenty of different ways to spin why he acts out, what he is and all that. My current fav way to portray him is a missing piece of Seans soul, which means hes unstable as a ‘person’ (cough, not really a human but not, not human either.) And how he has static filled blue eyes but usually hides them with the scary emerald green...

-Jameson, I will always stand by this kinda universe i created with a friend aages ao that Shawn took away Jamesons voice when being puppeteered by an awful ink creature that shares his body. Giving Jameson a lovely fear of knives, some scars, and some very damaged vocals..

-Crank, Oh my fucking boi, a near dead human spliced with a bunch of robot parts..human skin tangled with wires and a heart incased in metal..hes a right mess, a voice in his head that makes him feel all sorts of bad.. He tries his best..he cries oil, I hardly get to write him but I love him.

-Blank, another big fav oi, black hollow eyes..a tendency to faint... My Hc involves him having been in an accident that almost killed him, leaving him with a very rare heart condition. He also has an aura which..kinda ties into him having a few abilities and stuff.

-Nes.. He started off as my own kinda Ethan ego, basically Ethan who was mistreated and really lost his marbles..hes great for the real twisted messed up kinda stuff, so dependant on others, a minor murderer, and has been eyed off by a certain ice cream driver for quite some time...

-Were eth, Okay granted this was literally just kinda an idea that..Eth became a were wolf boi, fangs, tail, ears. Hes just a fun lil pupper

-Eden. Succubus Ethan basically, but well, he again kinda turned into his own thing separate from Ethan. He's got a tail and wings, and hes a lovely lithe thing. He doesnt dare do things without consent, just gets a bit touchy-feely when hes gone without any energy for too long. Very wide stunning saphire eyes.

- Jackie Oh my lad..Buff, trans, adorable, sweet. I always love tinkering around with how/what powers he has tbh..and like- I’ve always had the hc that his eyes are lilac?? or gold. Depending on things.. and he works either at a comic book store, a gym, or at the counter of a gas station. Gives the best hugs. Also I love AUS where hes a phoniex because of uhm?? Big fucking red wings??? YES.

-Hen, Getting his accent right is tough but other than that I love writing about the tired doctor living off coffee and ignoring himself in favor of others.

-Chase The fucking best dad, sunshine lad. Running a vlogging channel and doing his best while combatting depression..I hc him to have chronic fatigue so he has to push himself extra hard. but He does well in trying to get better and look after himself and only slips up like any other helpless human. Very fun to write.

- Robbie. Sof.t zombie lad. Drown in a sweater. Stutters and is v quiet. Slow with speech. Struggles to see sometimes. Loves soft textures.Loves attention. Overall soft fucking lad.

-KOTS, To mean known as Simon. Actually v smart, big brain, very scattered n shy and nervous and squirrelish. Loves books n plants, loves nature. Red is his best colour. Warm sweaters and nuzzling and cuddling up. I always get torn between him being a hybrid of human/squirrel or just a lovely soft guy.

-Yan ! My fem nb/trans gal! They’ll kick ass with their katana, have the hots for Bim, and looove Japanese culture and stuff. Very adorable. Loves pink. 10/10 love to write.

-Technically I do have a muse for Mark, or..idea? I’m thinking about shoving it into my own oc/thing..but basically he got tortured n abused by Authy so hes not quite like the real life markimoo..just a nervous mess whose dealing with his traumas..

-Bing, Skater lad, yellow/orange eyes, sunflower vibes. Tries his best, clumsy as fuck, great for a laugh when hes not cowering under google.

-Edward iplier, Gah my doctor lad.. I have a hc that he Lost arm. In fire..or by dark n wilf. He has heterochromia too!! One cho ceye one blue one. He is a fucking nerd (Minor adhd lets be honest) He fucking loves space and science and space/science related lights. He has a bat plus with spacey wings. He likes reading, likes being clean and is quite a quiet indulger in food which has left him with a big of a softer figure. Super gentle nature..nothing like the arrogant portrayal we got in some videos.

-Angus I love this man!!! Part Aussie, part irish, a whole lot of gruff old dad with a soft spot for nice people and animals, has his own big place, next to a large ass forest. Loads of scars. Loves boots and cameo coloured clothing. A lovely guy when you get past the rough edges.

Aand onto all my ocs as of writing this (cause you name well know I be writing new ones like..all the time.)

-Jessy, Cowboy- Choker with gold bell. Lil ears/horns. Spots. Shy but sweet. Hands and feet different colour to rest of skin. Kinda fur ish feeling rather then just straight-up skin. Pear shaped figure. Shy lad. Likes to take lots of naps, anxious easily but a big people pleaser too.

-Ailan and Keros. Moth n butterfly boi. (Literally just made up with a friend, just a random soft pair of lads tbh nothing too fleshed or spesh)

- Louie - Followed by a dark being/creature/spirit... Yet to determine what else about him, but hes got brown hair, pointed ears and looks lovely in green.

-Quinton A Hybrid of Demon and Angel otherwise called a Guardian. Quirky, Pan as shit, great dress sense. Extremely calm. Can see auras. Lovely black feathered wings. Bright blue hair. Kind smile. Works at a little coffee shop in his spare time.

-Ori Very pure angel boy, previously owned and not very well treated by a god, came crashing down to earth with no memories but his wings intact. Some help him.

-Lumi Ghost boy! Died years ago under awful circumstances..now lingers around on earth, sometimes meeting humans who happen to be able to feel or see his presence, he has the ability to make himself solid for short periods of time.

- Lucio Witchy..dragon soul something or other- Deaf.Paralyzed? In the arms??They might use alot of energy trying to hover around instead of having to use a chair..(I mean how many witches do you see with chairs??).. Although they could not have use of their arms instead, like..paralyzed from the shoulder down- they still have them but theyre effectively useless and easily sore.. (which might make magic really hard, cause theyd have to master it again without their hand gestures.)

- Eztli, Bit of a prick. Basically got cursed to have really weird blood that replished and rejuvinated too fast/too much by a witch he angered. So he turned the curse into a good thing and basically goes out offering himself as a human blood bag for vamps willing to pay in info, items, cash or uh..other services..

- Gallio Photographer, has hypocalcemia. Haven't really done much else with him tbh.

-Aomi Warlock/witch in training. Downright awful at it. Young and lives in a nice lil cottage outside of the village he was abandoned in.

- Lucas A moonstone gem perma-fusion, he kinda has SPD/DID but he doesn't, cause..hes two gems that became one but not fully. Leaving him to be a bit of a mess and not as strong as other moonstones.

- Kiyan. A little assistant android!! Created to assist, he can make portals!, He works at a post office. Hes under surveillance by the company that made him and isnt yet aware of many human customs/emotions..

- Alex A very confused, overly optimist Alien who doesn’t know what they are. Come from the planet Eutychia, 4'3. They fucking glow. You know Kilowatt from space chimps? think that. But hair n freckles and more human and just as bubbly and energetic.

-Locus Mer/Fish boi! Transparent fins, glowy patches, plays harp + loves music.

-Lir A Tiny Octopus/Human hybrid lad. Makes little burble and trill noises. Quite harmless. Needs a home.

Benji (Strawberry shortcake boi- Cursed tape /bandages. Demi half god.? One eye. Uses notes. To communicate but also sign. Really. Good sweets maker)

- Theo A tiny ink creature. A clever little lad, who likes to drawn and write n paint in ink and leave cheeky little black splotches everywhere. A very good writer companion tho.

- JellyBubs! A collection of tiny sentient jelly babies, hungry lads will raid your cupboards.

author’s notes: oops this is late and not very good but i hope u enjoy this incredibly cheesy kaider fic with zero (0) plot! for reference, they’re both human, cinder still has a metal arm and leg due to an actual hovercraft accident, iko is human and is great, and cinder is 20 and kai is 22. happy holidays @kindasortaameyzing !!

The world was soft around the pair, the edges of their vision blurring. They could be asleep, were it not for Cinder’s fingers tracing designs on his bare chest, flowers and stars and swirls, tying the earth and the sky together with her fingertips. Her body was molded against his, the fine sheets draped across his waist and her body. She brushed her thumb across the freckle just below his collarbone, pressing against it for a moment. Kai’s hand moved against her shoulder, drawing her closer. Cinder presses up against him willingly, burying her face against him.

They stayed like that for a long time, his arm around her, their bodies pressed together like they had been made that way, two halves of a whole. Her legs tangled with his, his soul tangled with hers. She hummed against his shoulder, tapping her fingers gently.

“Kai,” she said finally, her voice soft, content, “what do you think it’d be like if we weren’t… us?”

A crease appeared between his brows. “What do you mean?”

“I just mean… what if I wasn’t the lost Lunar princess, just a normal Earthen girl? And you weren’t the crown prince, just Kai. Where do you think we’d be?”

“Hmmm,” he contemplated. “I mean, I’ve thought about it before, I guess. Abstractly. I think we’d be us, just a little bit of a different us. You know?”

“Yeah.”

A pregnant moment passed, the faint rise and fall of their breathing the only noise to pass through the room.

“Why do you ask?”

“Oh, I don’t know. Just wondering.”

He hummed gently, considering. “It might have been easier, but I like this us.”

“Me too.”

“You should sleep, darling.”

“Yeah,” she echoed. “You too.”

“Mmmhmmm. Goodnight, love.”

She pressed a kiss to his shoulder before closing her eyes, her head on his chest, letting the rise and fall of his breathing lull her to sleep.

Cinder wiped a greasy, gloved hand across her forehead, attempting to unstick a chunk of her hair from her face. Stars, it was hot.

“You know that doing that doesn’t actually make you any cleaner,” the girl propped up on the workbench behind Cinder’s counter pointed out. “The grease is just on your face now.”

An exasperated sigh escaped Cinder, but a smile curled across her lips despite herself. “I’m a mechanic, Iko. I’m supposed to get dirty.”

“Yeah, yeah.” Iko waved her hand dismissively. “I’m just saying! What if, like, a celebrity walked in here?”

Cinder snorted. “Right. Who’s going to walk in, the prince?”

“You never know!”

“Uh-huh. Hey, hand me that wrench, will you?”

Iko passed the wrench to Cinder without complaint. “You are the best mechanic in New Beijing. Not the cleanest, but definitely the best.”

“Hey!” Cinder laughed indignantly, throwing an extra bolt at her friend, who ducked it, grinning unashamedly.

“Sunken to throwing things, have we?”

“Well, I’d have you know —”

Someone behind the pair cleared their throat, and they instantly quieted.

“Excuse me — so sorry to interrupt, but is this Linh Cinder’s?”

The voice belonged to a young man, maybe a year or two older than Cinder, with shiny hair and almost perfect features. His dark brown eyes were ringed by long, dark lashes and his hair stuck up a bit in the back, but he managed to make it look endearing. His lips were pink and pouty, wearing an apologetic smile. All this with a child balanced on his hip, the little girl smiling toothily, hair braided into two stubby pigtails.

If Cinder could have gotten any warmer, she would have. “Um, yes, this is she.”

“Oh, hi! Nice to meet you.” He extended his free hand.

“Um.” Cinder glanced down at her grease-stained gloves. She pulled one off gingerly, shaking his hand. His palm was warm and dry, his grip friendly.

“Hi!” The little girl exclaimed. “I’m four.”

Cinder gave her a little wave. “Hi. I’m twenty.”

“That’s so old!”

“Lei, be nice!”

Cinder laughed gently. “That’s okay. What can I do for you?”

“Well, when Lei was little, she had a nanny android? Kind of? Thing is, it was a really old model, and now it’s stopped working. I called the company, and they just said to replace it, which would usually make sense, but Nainsi has a bunch of recordings and pictures from when Lei was little, and, well, you know.” He leaned in closer. “Government secrets.” Cinder’s eyes widened, and he broke his serious facade, laughing. “I’m kidding. It’s pure sentimentality.”

“Usually I would recommend replacing the model if it’s that old, but in this case, I can see what I can do. I’d probably have to see the physical model to be able to do anything, though,” Cinder replied. “Can you bring it in?”

“Yeah! I’ll have to check my schedule, but I can probably bring her in in a few days,” he replied, beaming. “Thanks so much!”

Cinder offered him a small smile. “No problem. Just bring her in during my work hours, and I’ll see what I can do.”

“Great. I really appreciate it. Looking forward to seeing you again.” He shifted, lifting Lei higher on his hip. “Say goodbye, kiddo!”

“Bye!”

Cinder waved her fingers at the little girl and her toothy smile. “Bye.”

He waved again and left Cinder’s shop, Lei on his hip. She sank against the counter, smiling against her will.

“Oh my stars, Cinder!” Iko spoke suddenly, having been silent throughout their entire exchange.

“What?”

“He was so cute! Don’t you think so? And,” she added, “he was clearly into you.”

Cinder’s ears grew red. “What? No. I mean, like, objectively he wasn’t horrible, but he wasn’t — and anyway, he definitely wasn’t flirting with me. He has a kid; he’s probably taken or married or something. So.”

Iko raised a perfectly plucked eyebrow. “Did you see a wedding ring?”

She furrowed her eyebrows, trying to remember whether or not there had been a wedding band on the warm hand she had shaken. “I don’t remember. Maybe not, but I’m not sure.”

“Well, I noticed, and he wasn’t. So he isn’t married. Plus, he’s pretty young. She might not even be his kid.” Iko cocked her head. “She was really adorable, though.”

Cinder hummed her agreement. “Yeah, she was.”

“Anyway, you can just ask when he comes back.”

“What? No! Iko, how could I possibly phrase that? It’d be so unprofessional.”

“Cinder. Since when has this place been professional. Like, ten minutes ago you hit a girl’s portscreen against the counter to see if that would fix it.”

Cinder huffed indignantly. “And it did!”

“Okay, true. But you know what I mean.”

“Yeah, I guess,” Cinder blew a piece of hair out of her face. “I’m still not asking him, though.”

“I can do it for you. ‘Oh, tall, dark, and beautiful stranger! Would you happen to be taken? Because you see, my friend here with the grease stain on her forehead is totally into you and would like to take you home and help you get some of that parental stress ou-ouut!’” The pitch of Iko’s voice rose several octaves as she ducked the screw Cinder threw at her.”

“You are not saying that. And just because I think he’s attractive doesn’t mean I want to jump into his bed,” Cinder said.

“That could have hurt me!” Iko protested. “Oh, and you admit he’s attractive?”

Cinder spluttered, her ears and cheeks heating up.

Two days later, the tall, dark and — yes, Iko — beautiful stranger and his daughter were back, this time with a large, non-functioning android in tow. He set the heavy, pear-shaped body on the counter, wiping a slight sheen of sweat off of his forehead. Iko, who had insisted on sticking around for the days he might come back, sat on the workbench Cinder didn’t use.

“Hey,” he said, a bit out of breath. “I swear she’s heavier than she looks. I’m not that weak. But she’s here, as promised.”

“Thanks. Oh, wow, she is old,” Cinder replied, already examining the android on her counter. “Where did you find her?”

He laughed sheepishly, running a hand through his hair. “Yeah. I don’t know, actually. I think my sister got her second-hand somewhere a few years ago.”

“I haven’t seen this model in years,” Cinder commented, opening the control panel on the android’s back with a tiny screwdriver.

“Do you think you can fix her?”

“Yeah. I mean, I can’t make any promises, but if I run a few diagnostics, that’ll probably reveal the problem. With older models like this, it’s usually the issue of newer software being run on old tech.”

“Huh.” He furrowed his brows. “That’s weird. I don’t think she’s been used in about three years or so.”

“Hmm.” Cinder fiddled with a few wires in the control panel, poking at a shiny chip in the back. “Do you have a few minutes? I can take her to the back and run a few tests if you have a minute.”

“Yeah, no problem.” He leaned up against the counter. “Thank you.”

“Sure.” She heaved the android over her shoulder, pulling it into the back room to plug her into one of the machines back there.

“Hi,” Cinder heard Iko say, “I’m Iko, Cinder’s friend. And you are?”

Cinder held back the urge to roll her eyes. Iko.

“Oh, I’m Kai,” he replied. “Nice to meet you.”

Kai. A good name, Iko would have said. Nice, a bit older, but in an attractive, old film way.

“Likewise. Your daughter isn’t with you today? She was adorable!”

“Oh, she’s not mine. Well, kind of. She’s my sister’s, technically, but she’s not really in the picture much anymore, and I was around, so, you know.”

“I’m so sorry for your loss; I didn’t know.”

“It’s okay, how could you have? And she’s not dead; she’s just not really around. Life happens.” His voice got a little tighter, and Cinder’s chest constricted, hoping Iko would get the hint.

She apparently did, as she didn’t press. “Well, she’s adorable. Lei, was it?”

Kai laughed, a sound he made often, and one Cinder enjoyed. “Yeah. She’s a handful, sometimes, but she’s adorable.”

“Mhmm. She really is. Looks like you, too!”

“Thanks. We get that a lot, actually.”

Iko giggled. “I’m sure you do.”

Iko, what are you doing?

“Anyway,” Iko continued, speaking louder this time. “It’s just you and her, then?” Her voice was loud, and tone pointed, and Cinder flushed.

A slightly uncomfortable chuckle. “For now, yeah. It’s just her and me. I don’t mind, though,” he added on hastily. “She’s… she’s my world, you know?”

“Yeah, I get it. She seems like she’s just the sweetest. Cinder, back in there, she actually --”

Shit. Cinder twisted the last two wires together, then burst through the curtain separating her workroom from the rest of the shop. “I’m back, sorry! Iko, thanks for entertaining my customer,” she said, elbowing her friend in the side.

“Yes, we were just getting to know each other a bit,” Kai said, running a hand through his adorably messy hair as he shifted his weight against the counter.

Cinder bit her lip. “That might be good because I’m not totally sure I can fix this in the next half hour or so. Some of the wirings are pretty ancient and rusty. It’s fixable, don’t worry,” she interjected as Kai’s expression fell, “but it might take me a few hours. Um, if you give me a number I can reach you at I can let you know when she’s ready?”

“That sounds great. Here,” Kai said, pulling out his portscreen, “this is the best number to reach me at.”

“Great,” Cinder echoed. Great? Isn’t that what he just said? Stars, she needed to get a grip. He was just an attractive customer. Who she just exchanged numbers with. For business purposes. It was strictly business, even if he had beautiful, dark eyes she could just about melt in, and continued to do that casual-yet-sexy lean against her counter, which was more than a little distracting. And he was single. Probably. Her beautiful, single customer. Who first met her when she had grease smeared across her forehead.

He opened his mouth a little, then shut it, a small smile spreading across his cheeks. What a smile it was. “Just, uh -- thanks so much. From both Lei and me. I’ll see you soon?”

“No problem. Yup. See you.”

“I’ll look forward to it.”

Look forward to it. He’ll look forward to it.

“Cinder, this is the fourth time he’s come in with a broken portscreen that isn’t actually broken. He’s clearly into you,” Iko said through a mouthful of instant noodles.

“Or maybe he’s just really bad with technology.”

“Cinder.”

The pair congregated on Cinder’s couch for their weekly gossip-slash-binge-web-series-slash-eat-until-they-couldn’t-move session. Usually, they tried to cook actual food, but Cinder had a backlog of orders and repairs to do, not to mention attempting to find a college in New Beijing that offered a good engineering program and wasn’t, like, ridiculously expensive, and still allowed her time to keep regular hours at her shop. Her head started hurting just thinking about it. The point was, they were eating instant noodles cooked in Cinder’s microwave tonight.

She took a bite of her noodles, chewed, and swallowed. “See,” she pointed out, “even if I did like him, which I’m not saying I do, he’s my customer. Like, we message each other sometimes, but it’s always out work stuff. How do I break that barrier?”

Iko cocked her head to the side. “Are you serious? He’d be fucking overjoyed if you texted him to say hey. Or you could just ask him out. Skip the rest of the awkward flirting stuff. Seriously, this is like high school all over again. You like him; he likes you. That should be enough. You guys are adults, dammit!” She stabbed her noodles definitively. “Ask that boy out.”

Cinder mumbled protests into her noodles. “Yeah, yeah. Want to not talk about boys and watch trashy reality television instead?”

“Always.”

“Did your portscreen break again?”

“Um…. no?” Kai gave her a sheepish smile, holding out a small silver square. “It was my holoscreen projector remote this time. I can’t get it to work.”

Cinder raised an eyebrow. “Did you try changing the batteries?”

“Oh, oops! No, that must be it. Thanks again.”

“No problem.”

He didn’t move, just stood there, awkwardly running a hand through his hair.

“Um, so --” Kai began.

“No, wait --” Cinder interrupted.

“My portscreen hasn’t actually been broken --”

“I’ve wanted to say this for a while --”

“I just wanted to see you --”

“I really like you and, um --”

“Would you go out with me?” they finished together.

For a moment Cinder stared at him, and he stared back. The corner of Cinder’s mouth twitched up, and they burst out laughing, doubling over as peals of mirth washed over them. The moment one would begin to sober, they would look at one another and begin all over again.

The lanterns and twinkly lights strung up around the market gave off a pinkish glow, coating the night with an ethereal luminance. The couple flitted around the festival, stopping to admire handmade jewelry or, in Cinder’s case, a booth full of tech. “Look!” she’d exclaimed, holding up a tiny, robotic bee. “It’s so clever! All the little wires and look, this bit must have taken so much coding!” She trailed off as she noticed Kai staring at her, cheeks pink with excitement over the mechanical creature. “What?” she asked, covering half of her face self-consciously.

“You… you’re just… wow.” His eyes were wide and lips slightly parted as he stared at him and oh, stars, she wanted to kiss him.

She ducked her head in embarrassment and pulled him along to the next booth, leaving the model bee behind, although the urge lingered.

Cinder wasn’t totally sure when they had started holding hands -- it was sometime after the hot chocolate but before the juggling performance -- but there they sat, Cinder gingerly resting her head on Kai’s shoulder with his hand in hers, watching a musical trio perform an acoustic version of a popular song she couldn’t quite place. A few couples, mostly older people, slow danced on the makeshift dance floor in front of them (the makeshift dance floor being the dirt in front of the performers, illuminated by the lights strung above). His thumb moved gently over her hand, and she was content to stay like that forever.

Her date, apparently, was not. “C’mere,” he said, pulling her to her feet. “Let’s go dance.”

“Oh -- no,” Cinder protested. “I’m a mechanic. I don’t know how to dance.”

“It’s fine,” he assured her. “Nobody does. Just kinda sway with the music.”

“I -- oh, all right.” She allowed Kai to lead her to an unoccupied corner of the dance floor.

“First you put your hands around my neck like so, and I put my arms around your waist.” With this he placed his hand gently around her waist, pulling her a bit closer. “Then you move a bit closer,” he whispered, “and you dance.”

“Sway, you mean?”

“Mhmm. Who knows how to dance?”

“It’s overrated. This is… this is nice.”

“I agree.”

They stood like that, spinning slowly and gently swaying side to side, Cinder’s hands on his shoulder and his hands on her waist -- which were, by the way, gentle and soft and yet still burning into Cinder’s sides because it was him. They chatted quietly for a few songs, careful not to disturb the other couples -- oh, stars, was she thinking of them as a couple? -- before settling into comfortable silence. Once Cinder worked up the courage, she laid her head on his chest. Kai instantly pulled her closer, resting his chin on top of her head.

A new group of performers took to the stage in the dying twilight, this band playing softer, instrumental music. There were no words, but Cinder felt this music stirring something inside of her. Or maybe that was how close Kai was holding her, his hands on her waist and his lips were so close and his eyes and oh, stars, he was going to be the death of her.

“Cinder?” he breathed, his voice soft, soft below the music.

“Yes?”

“I really want to kiss you right now.”

“So do it.”

Looking back, Cinder wasn’t totally sure who moved first, but she knew that she went on her tiptoes to reach him and his eyes closed and his hands moved from her waist to cup her face. The kiss was so tender, searing into her soul as his lips moved against hers with the music all around them. They broke apart, a little breathless, but smiling nonetheless. Kai smiled that shy smile again, the one from the first day they’d met, and Cinder rose up to kiss him again, this kiss shorter, more symbolic than anything.

Kai was the one to break the silence, but Cinder wasn’t entirely sure whether or not his mumbling was intentional or not.

“Sorry, what was that?”

“Oh, it’s stupid.” He flushed. “I said that I’m glad you’re not an old man. Like, when someone recommended you as the best mechanic New Beijing, I imagined a grumpy old man with a bad back, not… you, you know? I’m sure glad you’re you.”

Cinder ducked her head before smiling up at him again.

“Me too. I’m glad too.”

“Kai. Kai. Are you okay?”

Kai glanced up from his portscreen for the fourteenth time, checking for any new messages. Dark half-moon circles hung under his eyes, betraying his exhaustion. He rested his head in his hands across the table from Cinder. “Yeah, I’m fine, just -- you know Lei’s mother? My sister?”

Her eyebrows furrowed. “Not personally, but you’ve mentioned her, yeah. Why?”

Kai sighed. “You know how she left Lei to go to Europe? She’s still there, apparently, and she got into a hover crash. There was a drunk driver, I think. They found my name in her portscreen, and they called me and she’s in the hospital. She’s fine, like, she’s going to make it and everything, but she had to have a blood transfusion, and she’s going to be there for awhile and just -- I don’t know.” He broke off, burying his face in his hands. “We don’t really speak, but she’s still my sister, you know? And I just -- I need to see her. To make sure she’s all right and has a place to stay and she’s not always the most responsible person, so I’m just worried.”

“Oh, Kai. When did you find out?”

“Just this morning. And I can’t go, because there’s no one I trust whose around to watch Lei for five days or so, so I’m stuck here. While my sister is almost comatose in the hospital in fucking Europe.”

Cinder grabbed his hand, squeezing it tightly. Her mind whirred, mentally going through her schedule and Lei’s and four days, she had four days, she had as many days as Kai needed. “I can watch Lei, if you want. I understand if you don’t want to leave her, but if she doesn’t mind hanging out in the shop with me… she’s more than welcome to stay with me. Or I can stay in your apartment, if she’d be more comfortable. It doesn’t matter to me.”

Kai’s eyes widened in gratitude. “You’d do that? Just for a few days? Are you sure? That would be amazing. Honestly. So amazing.”

“Yeah, of course,” Cinder said. “I like Lei, she’s great. And I spend enough time around her already; it’d be no trouble at all. Seriously.”

“Cinder, I cannot thank you enough. And Lei seriously adores you; she’d love spending a few days with you. Just -- thank you so much. Thank you.”

She squeezed his hands, smiling tenderly. “Of course. No problem. Go to your sister. I’ve got this.”

“Okay, I’m about to say something really cheesy,” Kai warned her.

Cinder propped herself up on her elbow to look at his face. “Go for it.”

“This is seriously like a fairytale. Like an old Hallmark movie or -- I don’t know. It just feels like a fairytale or something.”

She laughed, gently pushing against his side. “A fairytale, huh? Does that make you Prince Charming?”

“Excuse you; I’d make a great Prince Charming. I could totally pull off a horse and crown and… what do princes wear? I don’t know, but I could pull it off. Ride in and save the princess from aliens or something.”

“I am no damsel in distress.”

Kai laughed. “Definitely not. You’re, like, a badass princess, but people don’t know you’re a princess. A long lost princess posing as a mechanic, and a good mechanic too. Then I, the extremely handsome prince --” Cinder rolled her eyes in endearing exasperation at this “-- would come into your shop one day and totally fall in love with you at first sight. Then we’d have a long and complicated adventure story, and you would definitely save me from aliens at least once.”

“I like this reality, but that’s really sweet.” She pressed a kiss to his lips before burrowing under the blankets once again.

“I like this reality too. I wouldn’t want any other one.”

“Mmm. Me either.”

Cinder like this, liked pressing a kiss to his beloved and gently bitten lip, liked walking with Lei between them, holding their hands, liked coming home from class or work and being greeted with a kiss, liked going on double dates and being cheesy together, liked staying up late on weekends after Lei was in bed to binge their favorite web series and eat fast food, liked kissing his lips and collarbones and stomach and all of him, liked falling asleep pressed against him with Lei fast asleep in the other room.

She didn’t need daring rescues or royalty or aliens because him, Kai -- that was all she wanted. In any reality.

Beginner Dart Language Tutorial for JavaScript Developers

Hello, and welcome to this series! 👋 I’m Daniel, a software engineer at RisingStack, and I’ll be your guiding hand to get to learn Dart and Flutter.

This series is aimed at those who know React-Native, JavaScript, or web development and are trying to get into cross-platform mobile development because I’ll be comparing Dart language examples to JavaScript ones, and Flutter with React and React-Native.

However, if you don’t know any of these technologies yet, don’t let that throw you off from this series - I’ll explain core concepts thoughtfully. Let’s get started!

Let's learn the Dart language as JS developers: We dive into OOP, classes, inheritance, and mixins, asynchrony, callbacks, async/await and streams.

Why would you want to learn Flutter and Dart?

Flutter and Dart are made by Google. While Dart is a programming language, Flutter is a UI toolkit that can compile to native Android and iOS code, has experimental web and desktop app support, and it’s the native framework for building apps for Google’s Fuchsia OS.

This means that you don’t need to worry about the platform, and you can focus on the product itself. The compiled app is always native code as Dart compiles to ARM, hence providing you the best cross-platform performance you can get right now with over 60 fps. Flutter also helps the fast development cycle with stateful hot reload, which we’ll make use of mostly in the last episode of this series.

By the end of this series, you’ll have a basic understanding of Dart, the basic data structures, object-oriented programming, and asynchrony with futures and streams.

In Flutter, you’ll take a look at widgets, theming, navigation, networking, routing, using third-party packages, native APIs, and a lot more. Then, in the last episode of this series, we’ll put it all together and build a full-blown minigame together! Seems exciting? Then keep reading!

This episode of the series focuses on the Dart part of this ecosystem. We’ll look into Flutter in the next episode, and then we’ll put it all together into a fun minigame in the last episode. I’m excited to see what you’ll all build with Flutter, so let’s jump right in!

Sidenote: throughout this series, I'll use the “👉” emoji to compare JS and Dart language examples. Typically, the left side will be the JS, and the right side will be the Dart equivalent, e.g. console.log("hi!"); 👉 print("hello!");

Dart vs JavaScript - the pros and cons

JavaScript and Dart cannot be directly compared as they both have different use cases and target audiences. However, they both have their own advantages and disadvantages, and after a few projects with both technologies, you’ll get to see where they perform well.

There are some things, however, that you’ll notice as you are getting into the Flutter ecosystem: Dart has a steeper learning curve with all those types, abstract concepts and OOP - but don’t let that throw you off your track.

JavaScript has a bigger community, and hence more questions on StackOverflow, more packages, resources, learning materials, and meetups.

But once you get the hang of Dart, you’ll notice that Dart and Flutter has much-much better developer tooling, it’s faster, and compared to pub.dev, (Dart’s package repository) npm has more packages with worse quality.

Variables and types in the Dart language

After the first glance at a Dart code snippet, you may notice a concept that you may be unfamiliar with if you only know JS. Dart is type safe.

It means that when you want to define a variable, you’ll either have to provide an initial value and let the compiler figure out what type matches it (implicit typing), or (and this is the optimal case) you’ll have to provide the type of the variable explicitly.

In programming, types define what kind of data you are trying to store in your variable - for example, with an int type, you’ll be able to store an integer number (e.g. 7). In Dart, the most commonly used primitive types are int, double, string and boolean. Here are some language examples:

// Heads up! This is some nasty Dart code! var num = 0; // Dart will implicitly give this variable an int type. var, let 👉var int myInt = 3; // this is an explicitly typed variable final double pi = 3.14; // const 👉final, static and const, more info below myInt = 3.2; // will throw an error as 3.2 is not an integer pi = 3.2; // will throw an error as pi is marked with final String name = "Mark";

There’s also a “fallback-type” or a non-typed type: dynamic. In Dart, the dynamic type can be used whenever the exact type of a parameter, argument, list item, or anything else cannot be determined while writing your code. Please always be extra careful when working with dynamically typed variables and add extra safety barriers to your code so that your app doesn’t crash when an unexpected type gets passed. Try to avoid using dynamic as much as possible.

Oh, and a quick tip: to play around with Dart, you can use DartPad. It’s an online Dart compiler, or a “playground” made by the Dart team.

A few words about final, static and const

In Dart, we can create constants with three keywords: final, static, and const. final can be only created once in the runtime, while const is created at compile-time. You can think of const as an even stricter final. (When in doubt, you can use final and you’ll be just fine. To read more about the keywords final, static, and const, check out this article on the official Dart blog.

Writing your first Dart language function

Type-safety will come up in a lot of places - for example, when writing functions, you’ll have to define the return type and the type of the arguments.

// return type, function name, parameters with their types and names double addDoubles(double a, double b) { return a + b; } addDoubles(3.2, 1.4); // => will return 4.6

And when your function doesn’t return anything, you can throw in the keyword void - just like the entry point of every Dart program, void main() does.

void main() { print(addNumbers(2, 3)); // console.log() 👉print() // this function does not return anything! }

What’s an entry point anyways? In JavaScript, the code starts executing from the first line and goes linearly line-by-line until it reaches the end of the file. In Dart, you have to have a main() function that will serve as the body of your program. The compiler will start the execution with the main function, that’s where it enters your code - hence the name entry point.

Control flow statements - if, for, while, etc.

They look and work just like in JavaScript. Here are some examples:

int age = 20; if(age >= 18) { print("here’s some beer! 🍻"); } else { print("🙅‍♂️sorry, no alcohol for you..."); } // let’s count from 1 to 10! // p.s.: notice the `int i` for (int i = 1; i <= 10; i++) { print("it’s number $i"); // string interpolation: ${} 👉 $ (for variable names) } // while loops: // please don’t run this snippet, it will probably crash or run out of resources... while("🍌" == "🍌") { // oh, and forget ===, you don’t need it in Dart! print("Hey! 👋 I’m a banana!"); }

Arrays and objects

In JavaScript, to store multiple pieces of data together, we use arrays and objects. In Dart, we call them lists and maps, and they work a bit differently under the hood (and they have some extra APIs!). Let’s look into them!

Array 👉List

In Dart, a list ideally stores an array of homogenous data . That’s right -- no more [1, "banana", null, 3.44] (ideally)! You can create a list with the [] syntax you are already familiar with from JS, and with the new List() constructor.

// the usual, implicitly typed, [] syntax var continents = ["Europe", "North America", "South America", "Africa", "Asia", "Australia"]; continents.add("Antarctica"); // .push() 👉 .add() // please note that when throwing in multiple types of data, Dart will fall back to the `dynamic` type for your list: var maybeBanana = [1, "banana", null, 3.44]; // the `new List()` syntax, with a dynamic length: // note the List<T> syntax: you need to pass in the desired value type between the <>s List<int> someNiceNumbers = new List(); someNiceNumbers.add(5); // fixed-length list: List<int> threeNiceNumbers = new List(3); // this list will be able to hold 3 items, at max. // dynamic list with the new List() syntax: List<dynamic> stuff = new List(); stuff.add(3); stuff.add("apple"); // this is still totally legit because of the <dynamic> type

Object 👉Map

Now that we’ve covered arrays, we can move on to objects. In JavaScript, objects store key-value pairs, and the closest we can get to this data structure in Dart is a Map. Just like we saw at the List, we can define a Map both with the { ... } literal and with the new Map() constructor.

// the usual { ... } literal var notesAboutDart = { objects: "hey look ma! just like in JS!", otherStuff: "idc we’ll look into them later" }; // the new Map constructor Map notesAboutJs = new Map(); // … and of course, you can explicitly type Maps! // typed Map literal: Map<String, int> prices = <String, int>{ "apple": 100, "pear": 80, "watermelon": 400 }; // typed Map constructor: final Map<String, String> response = new Map<String, String>();

Knowing about these methods will be just enough for now - but if you want to get to know the advanced stuff like HashMaps right away, be sure to check out the API docs of the Map class.

Imports and exports

In JavaScript, you could simply expose values from your files with export or module.exports and refer to them in other files with import or require(...). In Dart, it’s both a bit more complex and simpler than that.

To simply import a library, you can use the import statement and refer to the core package name, a library name, or a path:

import 'dart:math'; // import math from “math” 👉import “math”; // Importing libraries from external packages import 'package:test/test.dart'; // import { test } from “test” 👉import “test/test”; // Importing files import 'path/to/my_other_file.dart'; // this one is basically the same // Specifying a prefix import 'dart:math' as greatMath;

But how about creating your own libraries or exporting stuff? Dart lacks the usual public, protected or private keywords that Java has for this purpose (sidenote: Dart is compared to Java a lot of times) and even the export keyword that we’re used to in JavaScript. Instead, every file is automatically a Dart library and that means that you can just write code without explicitly exporting stuff, import it in another file, and expect it to work out just fine.

If you don’t want Dart to expose your variable, you can (and should!) use the _ prefix. Here’s an example:

// /dev/a.dart String coolDudes = "anyone reading this"; String _hiddenSuffix = “...with sunglasses on 😎"; // /dev/b.dart import "./b.dart"; print("cool dudes: $coolDudes"); // => cool dudes: anyone reading this print("cool dudes: $coolDudes $_hiddenSuffix") // => will fail as _hiddenSuffix is undefined in this context

Oh, and just a quick note about naming variables: camelCasing is considered a best practice, just like capitalizing abbreviations longer than two characters (e.g. HTTP => Http, or HttpConnectionInfo). To know more about writing efficient and stylish Dart code, make sure that you read the Effective Dart guide later on your journey, once you are confident with the basics.

A quick intro to OOP and classes

Dart is an object oriented language - but what does that mean for you?

If you don’t know OOP yet, that means that you’ll have to learn a brand new paradigm of programming that is utilized in many popular languages like Java, C#, and of course, Dart. While introducing you to OOP isn’t the main goal of this series, I’ll provide you a quick intro so that you can start off with Dart and Flutter.

The first thing to settle is that JavaScript isn’t either strictly OOP nor functional - it contains elements from both architectures.

It’s up to your preferences, the project you work on, and the desired target framework, to choose (if a strict decision is ever made) between the two concepts. On the other hand, Dart is pretty strict about being OOP.

Here’s a little chart I made to help you wrap your head around the main differences between functional and object-oriented programming:

To sum up: before OOP, there was procedural programming. There were a bunch of variables and functions lying around - and it was simple, but if often led to spaghetti code. To solve this, engineers came up with OOP, where we group related functions and variables into a unit. This unit is called an object, and inside it there are variables called properties and functions called methods. While creating this unit, always try to be descriptive. To practice making up these units, you can come up with real-world objects around you and try to describe them with properties and methods.

A car would, for example, have properties like their brand, color, weight, horse power, their license plate number and other stuff that can describe a car. Meanwhile it would have methods for acceleration, breaking, turning, etc.

Of course, you don’t have cars inside your code, so let’s put that abstract idea into code! A great example of a unit inside JS would be the window object. It has properties like the width and height of the window and has methods for resizing and scrolling.

The four principles of OOP are:

Encapsulation: Group variables (properties) and functions (methods) into units called objects.This reduces complexity and increases reusability.

Abstraction: You should not be able to directly modify the properties or access all methods - instead, think of writing a simple interface for your object. This helps you isolate the impact of changes made inside the objects.

Inheritance: Eliminate redundant code by inheriting stuff from another object or class. (Dart achieves this with mixins - we’ll look into concrete examples later). This helps you keep your code base smaller and more maintainable.

Polymorphism: Because of the inheritance, one thing can behave differently depending on the type of the referenced object. This helps you in refactoring and eliminating ugly ifs and switch/case statements.

Real-Life Dart Examples

If you are confused or intimidated by this concept, don’t worry. Looking at real-life Dart examples will help you wrap your head around this whole mess we call OOP. Let’s look at a simple class with some properties and a constructor.

And somewhere else in the code, you can construct a new instance of this class:

And that’s it! You’ve just made your first Dart class with properties and methods. You used typed variables, get-only (protected) variables, control flow statements, got the current year and printed some stuff out to the console.

Inheritance and mixins in Dart

Now while you have momentum, let’s have a peek at inheritance and mixins.

Once you have a solid knowledge of classes and start to think of more complex systems, you’ll feel the need for some way to inherit code from one class to another without copying and pasting code all over the place and making a big ol’ bowl of spaghetti. ❌🍝

For this reason, we have inheritance in OOP. When inheriting code from one class to another, you basically let the compiler copy and paste members of the class (“members” of the class are methods and properties inside a class), and add additional code on top of the previous class. This is where polymorphism kicks in: the same core code can exist in multiple ways by inheriting from a base class (the class you inherit from).

Think of HTML. There are several similar elements that HTML implements, like a TextBox, a Select or a Checkbox. They all share some common methods and properties like the click(), focus(), innerHTML, or hidden. With class inheritance, you can write a common class like HtmlElement and inherit the repetitive code from there.

How does this look in practice? In Dart, we use the extends keyword to inherit code from a base class. Let’s look at a short example:

// notice the extends keyword. // we refer to the Developer class we defined in the previous snippet class RisingStackEngineer extends Developer { final bool cool = true; String sunglassType; RisingStackEngineer(String name, int experienceYears, this.sunglassType) : super(name, experienceYears); // super() calls the parent class constructor void describeSunglasses() { print("$name has some dope-ass $sunglassType-type sunglasses."); } }

And what can this class do? Let’s look at this snippet:

void main() { RisingStackEngineer berci = RisingStackEngineer("Bertalan", 300, "cool"); berci.describe(); // .describe(); is not defined on the RisingStackEngineer class directly - it’s inherited from the Developer class. We can still use it though! berci.describeSunglasses(); // => Bertalan has some dope-ass cool-type sunglasses }

Isn’t that amazing? Let’s make it even better with mixins. Mixins help you mix in more than one class into your hierarchy. For example, let’s give some keyboards for our developers:

class Keyboard { int numberOfKeys = 101; void describeKeyboard() { print("The keyboard has $numberOfKeys keys."); } }

And use a mixin to create some sort of developer-keyboard hybrid person with Dart and the with keyword:

class WalkingKeyboard extends Developer with Keyboard { // ... }

And that’s it! If you want to practice Dart before we move on to our last topic for today (asynchronous programming), be sure to play around with DartPad, an online compiler made by the Dart team.

Write some statements, create some classes and maybe even inherit some code. Don’t just read - pause this article and write some code! Once you feel comfortable with these base concepts (typing your variables, writing lists, maps, using control flow statements, creating classes), we’ll move forward to asynchronous programming with Dart.

Asynchronous programming in the Dart Langauge

Writing asynchronous code is a must when communicating with a server, working with files, or using some native APIs. In JavaScript, we had callbacks and async/await for timing our code. To our luck, Dart utilizes the very same concepts and embraces async/await to avoid callback hell.

Let’s look at a callback example first:

// Promise 👉 Future // the method return type is an asynchronous void Future<void> printWithDelay(String message) { // Future.delayed delays the code run with the specified duration return Future.delayed(Duration(seconds: 1)).then((_) { print(message); }); } void main() { print("hey hi hello"); printWithDelay("this message is printed with delay"); }

And look at the very same code with async/await:

// notice that you have to add in the async keyword to be able to await a Future Future<void> printWithDelay(String message) async { await Future.delayed(Duration(seconds: 1)); print(message); } void main() { print("hey hi hello"); printWithDelay("this message is printed with delay"); }

And that was it for the Promise 👉 Future part. If you’d like to know more about the Future API, be sure to read the documentation. But stay tuned! Dart has another API for handling asynchrony: Streams. 🤯

Streams in the Dart Language

Dart’s main advancement in asynchrony compared to many other languages is native support for streams. If you want to have a simple way to wrap your head around the difference between Futures and Streams, think of the following: Future handles “finished future” (e.g. a web API response) with a single value, while Streams handle continuous future (e.g. an asynchronous for loop) with zero or more values.

Consider the following chart:

How do you work with data received from Dart Streams? Whenever a new event happens in the stream (either new data is received or an error happened), Dart notifies a listener. A listener is a snippet of code that subscribes for events of a stream and processes data whenever an event is received. You can subscribe to a stream with the .listen() function, provide a callback and boom, there you go! Isn’t that easy? 🤩 Let’s look at an example to get the hang of it:

// this is an imaginative stream that gives us an integer every one second final exampleStream = NumberCreator().stream; // e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4, ... // print the data received from the stream final subscription = exampleStream.listen((data) => print(data););

By default, Dart streams only support one listener. Adding another listener to this stream would throw an exception - however, there is a tool that helps us adding multiple listeners to a single stream. Broadcast streams! You can just throw in .asBroadcastStream at the end of your stream and you’ll be able to add multiple listeners to your stream:

// same code but with a broadcast stream. Notice the .asBroadcastStream at the end! final exampleStream = NumberCreator().stream.asBroadcastStream; // and you’ll be fine adding multiple listeners final subscription = exampleStream.listen((data) => print(data);); final subscription2 = exampleStream.listen((data) => print(data););

But while we’re at listeners, let’s have a closer look at that API. I mentioned that you could either receive data or an error in a stream: how can you handle errors? I made a bit more advanced listener with error handling below. You can also run code when a stream finishes sending data (won’t send data anymore), you can explicitly define if you want to cancel listening when an error occurs, and a lot more. Here’s the code:

Oh, and if this wouldn’t be enough for you, you can do stuff with the subscription object itself too:

advancedSubscription.pause(); // pause the subscription advancedSubscription.resume(); // resume the subscription advancedSubscription.cancel(); // remove/cancel the subscription

There is still a lot more that can be done with streams in Dart: you can manipulate them, filter their data, and of course, we didn’t have a look at asynchronous iterators and creating streams - however, this should be just enough for you to start development with Flutter.

Summing our beginner Dart tutorial up

Congratulations on making it this far into the course! 🎉 If it was a bit dry or heavy for you, don’t worry: this was a Dart-only episode. In this episode, we looked at a crap ton of stuff! We went from variables, types, and control flow statements to lists, maps, imports, and exports.

Then, we came to the heavier parts of the Dart ecosystem. We first had a look at why OOP exists, what are its pros, where it performs well, and then we looked at classes, inheritance, and mixins, and if that wouldn’t be enough, we even looked at asynchrony, callbacks, async/await and streams.

Don’t forget: if you want to practice all these new stuff we just learned about, you can always hit up DartPad and play around with it for a bit. (I even encourage you to do so as you’ll need to have a strong Dart knowledge to move on to Flutter).
