Ok, here's a prompt then! 😊 "A quiet night. The Crows are staring at the stars in Wylan's house garden. Kaz notices Wesper and Helnik are cuddling, so he tries to win his fears and do the same with Inej."

a/n : hi! i loved this prompt so muchhh. and i had way too much fun with writing it which is why it took a bit longer then i had anticipated. but i am kinda proud of how it came out! i hope you enjoy what i did with it!

As much as Kaz would have liked to pretend otherwise, he looked forward to their dinners at Wylan’s.

No one could really remember how they began. First it was a dinner to celebrate a tricky job in the Financial District. Then, the next weekend, it was to talk over possible ideas for the Crow Club renovation. They continued this way nearly every week since, sometimes missing a person or two, but never without a good reason. It was a constant for them; despite the dangerous jobs and greedy gangs and petty criminals of Ketterdam, they always had each other.

That night had been the first dinner since Inej returned from sea. She’d been gone for nearly six months, her absence felt like a gaping hole for the rest of the gang. For a girl who was so good at being invisible, she was impossible not to miss.

Kaz sat at his desk, his toe tapping an anxious rhythm against the wooden leg. He knew that she was to be back today, she had written weeks ago, promising to return in time for the first weekly dinner of the month. Was her ship sailing into Fifth Harbor? Had she already docked? Was she walking to the Slat or Wylan’s estate? Or had she been stuck at sea for longer then expected?

He let out a frustrated sigh, which coming from him, sounded closer to a growl. Too many damned questions swam about in his brain. Kaz scrubbed a hand over his face, running it back through his hair. He debated on leaving for dinner. Did he want to be early to greet her when she arrived? Would it be better to wait? To let her talk with the others?

You are a damned fool, Brekker.

Here he was, focused on whether or not to be fashionably late to a house he’d visited more times then he could count. And for what? Inej was just a girl, the same girl she had always been. Kaz was sure upon first glance, she’d smile and make a remark on how tired he looked and how the saints had intended for their people to sleep. She would hug the others, let Jesper lean an elbow on her shoulder, gift everyone with some trinket from her travels, and she would complete them.

Yet he couldn’t help but wonder if there would be more, specifically where he was concerned. Before she left, they had tried to hold one another, he had tried. The gloves were discarded, his hands trailing up her arms to her bare shoulders, landing at the nape of her neck and the bottom of her jaw. It was slow and gentle, for his sake and hers. Inej responded with a gentle hand on the crook of his elbow, a silent ask for permission to touch in return.

Kaz gave a small nod, whatever pain he felt, being pushed away as he focused on her warmth, the glow of her steady gaze. She set her palms flush against his chest, her thumb running over the collar of his shirt. Her hand slid upward, warm against his neck. The other moved to his side and, whether she had meant to or not, nearly pressed her front against his.

The cold water crept into his lungs, his breath catching. He couldn’t feel her warmth through his shirt, couldn’t feel his hands on her skin, only felt nausea crawling through his veins. Inej noticed immediately, pulling herself back, the look on her face apologetic. Kaz took a deep breath and forced himself to look at her, It’s Inej, Inej is warm, Inej wouldn’t let you drown. When he felt ready, he reached for her hand.

She took it cautiously, afraid to hurt him again; he could see the guilt swimming in her eyes. Kaz simply gave a gentle squeeze, pulling her close enough to lean down and nudge the tip of her nose with his. It was small but it was something, a way to explain that he wasn’t angry, that he would be ready someday. He just didn’t know when.

Finally, tired of debating it, he shoved up from his desk. He would leave for Wylan and Jesper’s, arrive whenever he did, and that would be that. Kaz reached for his cane, throwing his suit jacket on. The walk from the Slat to the estate wasn’t horrible, and he’d certainly done worse, but it gave him just enough time to think, something he wasn’t sure he needed.

A thought crossed his mind as he started on his way: maybe he’d never make it to dinner, maybe he’d throw himself into the canal before ever getting there.

The house was always warm. No matter the season, no matter their pain, it was a safe place from it all. There was a soft glow emanating from the front windows, similar to the pubs and pleasure houses of the Barrel yet… so very different. This glow was made of life and comfort, a home cooked meal and bright candles; the Barrel’s light was built of greed and lust, a smokey imitation of contentment.

Kaz looked either direction before swiftly picking the lock to their front door. He himself had designed it, a complex system of locks and gears, ensuring their safety and ensuring that he’d never have to wait for Jesper to answer the door. After he entered, he clicked it shut behind him, turning the series of locks once more.

There was a bright raucous of chatter and laughter. It floated through the halls, accompanied by the smell of warm waffles, to reach him in the foyer. As he turned through the maze of corridors, coming upon the dining room, a small smile pulled at the corner of his lips.

Wylan was making an attempt at setting the table, forcing Jesper to help, trying to set trays around Nina, who had taken to sitting directly on the table. She plucked a cinnamon covered waffle from its plate, popping a chunk in her mouth, hoping Wylan wouldn’t notice.

“Nina!”

She spoke with a full mouth, forming words around the half chewed waffle. “Wha-?”

Jesper let out a laugh, “There will never be a day when Nina Zenik doesn’t get the first and last waffle.”

Matthias spoke up, throwing an arm around Nina’s shoulders. “And you’d better not fight her for them either.”

“I’m sure Zenik wouldn’t let you walk away with all ten fingers.” Kaz finally spoke up, walking closer to the table.

They all turned, Nina scowling at him, as per usual.

“Look who decided to join us!” Jesper put a disapproving hand on his hip, looking bare without his gunbelt.

“I didn’t realize I was late. Actually, if I’m not mistaken, we’re still missing another person.”

Wylan smiled, “You’re fine, Kaz. Sit.” He added a last remark before turning to get the silverware, “Shove Nina off the table while you’re at it.”

Her distaste for Kaz seemed to have disappeared, replaced by a bubbling excitement. “Do you know when her ship’s supposed to dock? Is she on her way here?”

“I don’t work on the docks. I know what she said in the letter which means, I know as much as you do.”

She grumbled, stepping off the table to sit in the seat across from where Kaz stood. Matthias settled in next to her, reaching over for her hand.

Suddenly, Kaz was keenly aware of something behind him, an unsettled silence ebbing into his peripheral; his spine stiffened, ever-so-slightly. It was a familiar feeling, a presence he hadn’t realized he missed this much. He felt it like a punch to the gut, all the wind nearly knocked from his lungs. After all these months, it was a wonder he hadn’t lost his sense for her.

Inej’s voice came first. “I hope I’m not too late.” She stepped up next to him, pulling back her hood, a soft smile on her lips.

Kaz felt as though his knees may give way. He let his eyes rove over her, paying careful attention to new scars on her arms, the long braid laying against her shoulder, her keen gaze that met his before anyone else’s.

He searched for something to say, his voice awestruck and near disbelief, coming out in a breathless gasp. She was really here, she was really home. “Wraith.”

Inej gave a bright and knowing smile, “Kaz.”

He had just managed to give a grin in return when Nina tackled her into a hug. Inej laughed, hugging back and then, she was swept away from him. Kaz watched as she smiled and greeted everyone, felt everything brighten when she laughed, the laugh that nearly made him drunk with bliss. With Inej came a sense of completion, the closing of a door just slightly ajar; everything felt right with her there.

Dinner was mostly used as time to bombard Inej with questions about being on the sea, asking for stories of her adventures as if they were a group of children listening intently to bed time stories. She obliged happily, telling of swordfights and rescues, naming all the people she saved from each ship. Kaz sat it silent amazement of her. Inej was always too good for the Barrel, too good to be just another spider crawling through the sludge, but now she was living it, and she was thriving.

After they finished eating and stacking their dishes on trays to be returned to the kitchen, Wylan suggested they go out to the garden. Ketterdam hadn’t reached the peak of summer yet, bringing with it an unbearable heat. The air around them still cooled as the sun descended in the sky, allowing for a comfortable evening.

The six of them sat down on the grass and, in the soft glow of the moon and their half formed circle, they looked like the children that they were. It was easy to forget that the oldest of them barely pushed eighteen, especially after all they’d been through, after all they’d done. And yet, here they were; a group of teenagers staring at the stars together.

Kaz looked over at the others, paying close attention to their unbridled affections in the safety of the garden walls.

Jesper pulled Wylan onto his lap, the smaller boy leaning his head gently against his chest, blushing and giggling at whatever obscenities Jes whispered into his ear.

Matthias and Nina laid back against the grass, his arm wrapped around her body, pulling her tight against him. His arm was pointed to the sky as he talked to her softly, tracing the shapes of constellations with his finger and telling her their stories from memory.

Kaz looked to Inej at his right. She looked content, her chin lifted and her eyes closed, breathing in deeply, as if this were the first time she’d ever experienced a night like this. He realized this was close to the first moment they’d had to themselves since she’d arrived and he found himself struggling with what to say once more.

Inej turned a bit in his direction, the corners of her lips upturned. “I can feel you staring.” Her words came out like a forgotten melody he was hearing for the first time in years.

“You’re aware as ever then.”

Her smile widened and she opened her eyes, “The sea doesn’t change your instincts, just makes you adapt them.” Then, her gaze met his. “Had you hoped you could start sneaking up on me?”

In all honesty, Kaz wasn’t sure what he had hoped for. But he knew that having her home, having her next to him, was certainly near the top. “Ketterdam would never be ready for the day when a crip like me could sneak up on the Wraith.”

Inej laughed, and again Kaz thought he could survive on that sound alone. A comfortable silence sat between them yet, he couldn’t help but remember all there was to discuss.

“Inej…”

“You don’t have to.”

A sigh escaped him. He took another moment before whispering what he’d really been thinking all night. “I missed you.”

Inej realized that she had wanted to hear those words from him, she had been waiting for them. Not expectantly, not as if she believed he owed it to give her as much; she simply craved them. She had waited to see him like this, to be near him again. Her eyes met his again, the look in them just as desperate and starved as his. “I missed you too.”

Kaz gently reached for her hand, giving her space to pull away if that was what she wanted. But she wanted the exact opposite; she wanted to be as close as their minds would allow. It was then she noticed that he hadn’t been wearing his gloves. A smile spread as their bare fingers intertwined.

For a moment, they both stared at their hands. The touch, after so long of being apart, felt like thousands of stars exploding between them. They were burning alongside the sparkling constellations they were studying in the night sky, mere minutes ago.

After he was sure they both felt comfortable, he moved closer. Kaz kissed the back of her hand before letting it go, wrapping the same arm around her back, letting it fall against her hip. He was careful to listen for any change in her breathing, feel for her stiffening or beginning to inch away. But she remained, letting her head fall against his shoulder.

Kaz waited for the worst. He waited for the cold water to wash through him, her warmth turning clammy beneath his touch. But it never came. The garden remained around him; Inej, a steady beat of life, pressed to his side.

His thumb moved up and down against the back of her arm. It caught the edge of a thick, raised scar he didn’t remember being there. He let his fingers explore it at her mercy.

Inej simply smiled, “A rough privateer.”

“I don’t remember hearing of a privateer in your stories?”

“Seemed a bit bloody for the dinner table.”

“Will you tell me?”

And so she did. She told him everything, from how he’d tried to take her ship to how he then decided he’d take her arm instead.

Kaz felt anger bubble up within him at the image of his Wraith, bleeding on the ships deck. Perhaps because it was something he was all-too-familiar with. “Where is he now?”

Inej looked up and smiled, giving a small shrug. “The bottom of the ocean.” A crooked and true smile spread on Kaz’s lips. She registered it as pride; it made her heart stutter in her chest. Her chin lifted, the tip of her nose barely touching his.

With the tilt of his head, their lips met. It was only a soft brush, testing it for the both of them. When neither pulled away, he tried again. This time deeper and longer, as if the months apart had finally caught up to them. They just wanted to hold one another, even if this was as far as they could ever go, it didn’t matter for them. This was all they needed.

Inej smiled into his lips, breaking them apart. Kaz felt himself smile in return.

A laugh escaped him, filled with pure joy he never thought was possible. “What is it, Wraith?”

She shrugged, a blush settling on the tops of her cheeks. “I just- I didn’t realize it could be like that.”

He pressed his lips to her hair and she settled into the crook of his neck.

In that moment, Kaz realized he felt happy, a feeling he of all people, surely didn’t deserve. But even if he didn’t, he would earn it. He would be a better man, even if it was only for her. Inej would be his exception, his anchor, his reason, and he would do anything possible to ensure that he deserved her.

Dirtyhands and the Wraith… what a pair they made.

May 31, 2022 - We landed at Heathrow without incident, although we were dropped off in Timbuktu the end of the airport, no customs or immigration, we scanned our own passports and said whether we had any thing to declare and we just went on. No stamps in our passports however; so hey no one knows we are here!! Truly that was a disappointment, I am proud of my passport stamps! We headed to the arrivals lounge and took a shower and changed clothes/shoes. We missed breakfast, but just had a pastry in the eating area and decided to head out. We bought our tickets to the Heathrow Express, however; when we got to the train, I was a little too train happy and we ended up on the new Elizabeth Line! But no worries, we still landed at Paddington Station. It wasn’t long before we got a cab, actually two cab drivers were fighting over us as there was a woman in front when he called us over and he sent the woman to the cab behind him and started loading our luggage into his cab. Words were exchanged (a lot!!), and he finally looks at us and says “Drama eh?” And we were on our way. The longest cab ride ever! It should have cost about £10 but ended up costing twice that because Mr. Drama took the very long way to the hotel. We were able to check in as it is now about 1:30 or so, so we came up to our room, unpacked our suitcase, sorted our clothes for the next few days, and then headed out to the tube station to top up our Oyster Cards. I still had about £3.10 left but we just added £20 to our cards as we will be going to Hempstead tomorrow. We headed to Monument and walked to Leadenhall Market. There wasn’t much to do aside from take pictures of the Monument. They had started decorating for HMTQ celebrations, but not a lot. I really wish we had been here more during May to see Chelsea in Bloom which was where a number of businesses made beautiful flower decorations in honour of HMTQ. We decided to head over to Covent Garden to see what was going on over there. I did find a Pandora store and bought a “Jubilee 2022” for my bracelet. We walked around a bit. Went into Whittard’s, one of our favourite tea shops. We tried some Jubilee tea, some Turkish Apple tea and some White Chocolate hot chocolate that was to die for. We will definitely be going back there when we return from the Peak District (these teas are heavy and we’d rather not drag them all over, and we will be returning to London for two days. We went to our favourite pub, Bunch of Grapes to have our traditional first night fish and chips, however; the dining room was closed and the bar was packed. Not a table to be had. So we headed to another favourite, Orsinis for Italian food. Another bust as it was closed permanently! I guess they didn’t survive the pandemic. So we then decided to go to Khan’s of Kensington, for Indian food. We usually go here on Theatre night as they are open late, but we were running out of options as the city is packed! After a nice dinner, we headed to Waitrose and picked up a pastry as we never found our usual Patisserie Valerie, and then came back to the hotel and had a gin and tonic and came to our room. I was so exhausted, I wrote incoherently in my journal, but was not able to write here and just passed out. Tomorrow we head to Hampstead Heath to visit the Highgate Cemetery and Kenwood House.

Dedicated to my sweet family

SET THE SCENE

I’ve been on my fair share of cruises – Hawaii, Caribbean, and another Alaskan cruise by Holland Cruise lines – and thus, I think I can safely say that I have had enough comparison to write a pretty good review on a cruise ship. The Bliss is the newest and biggest ship to sail the Alaskan waters and I will say it definitely lives up to its ship name. But before I go into the ship, let me give you a snapshot of beautiful Alaska.

Cerulean blue waters with hints of green flow around the gorgeous state of Alaska. The skies alternate between clear blue and a light gray and there is a chill in the air that is a profound welcomed relief from the humid heat of Texas (where I’m from). The air is devoid of heavy pollution and car traffic fumes and every city has its quiet charm. Salmon in every shape and color climb the salmon ladders while bald eagles dominate the skies.

The cold air is contrasted by a hot cup of chowder in chilled hands. One of the little things in life is having your insides immediately warmed by sip of a hot latte. Or being in the middle of a forest surrounded by trees connected together by fairy lights while roasting marshmallows over a large fire.

The most brilliant sharp icy blue glaciers and its pieces float enchantingly and menacingly in the waters. Whales swim by, peaking their heads and showing off their tails as cruisers lean over, awed, with binoculars. Waterfalls bloom out of the sides of mountains with the force of the water creating a thunderous sound.

This state is so breathtaking in every way.

THE SHIP

Size: While Bliss is definitely not the biggest cruise ship in the world, it definitely appears like the biggest ship on the Alaskan waters when all the ships are parked next to each other at the ports. It’s impressive to see from afar and to walk up to when returning from the city.

We saw so many whales from our cruise ship windows! Not the best photo but I got too excited and eventually put away my camera to just enjoy the magnificent sights

Exterior Décor: The front of the ship is beautifully decorated and my brother and I joked that the artwork definitely invited all the whales to swim up near our ship. I was honestly so surprised by how many whales I saw on the cruise – definitely more than the last time I was in Alaska. The front of the ship is illustrated with the wildlife of the ocean – whales, turtles, and rays. It’s the perfect artwork for a cruise ship.

Interior Décor: The inside of the ship is also tastefully ornamented. In the center of the ship is a gorgeous glass-appearing staircase that wraps around and glitters in the light. The hot tubs are purposefully placed at the tail end of the ship and on the sides so there is a clear view of the ocean. Every room is carefully constructed to its theme.

Service: The staff on the ship is 5/5 stars. They are so incredibly friendly and accommodating and always willing to strike up a good conversation with you but they also know when to leave you alone as well. They always have a smile for you and their response to everything is quick. They all come from different countries around the world and it is fascinating to hear their stories and everywhere they have traveled!

THINGS TO DO ON THE SHIP

Observation Lounge: Located at the front of the ship, this area was one of my favorite areas on the ship. Decked out in large windows showcasing the beauty of Alaska, the lounge is full of comfy arm chairs and the best part? The bar in the middle as well as two buffets of tea time food fully stocked with finger sandwiches, salads, and desserts. On the days at sea, it’s the perfect area to chill with family and friends, play cards, and observe the Alaskan magnificence without being in the cold.

The Pool and Aqua Park: On one of the top decks of the ship is the pool and the incredible water slides on the ship. There is one water slide where you slide down in rafts and there is one thrilling slide that literally hangs over the ocean! There is a fun area where the kids congregate and hot tubs that dot the sides of the ship as well as the rear end. I highly recommend chilling in the hot tubs at the rear so you can see the full view of the ocean behind you as the ship sails.

Race Track: Yes, this ship has a whole level dedicated to a race track where you can race your family and friends either in a single cart or a double seater cart.

TIP: Book your reservations before you get onto the ship! My family and I did not realize that seats were limited so we did not get to try out this part of the cruise.

SHOWS

My favorite thing about cruises is the kind of night time entertainment the ship provides meaning the evening shows. I would say my review for this ship’s shows is probably a 4/5 stars in comparison to the other ships I’ve been on. The best shows I’ve seen on a ship still goes to Allure of the Seas, but this ship definitely provides a great entertainment and truly hats off to the hard working actresses and actors!

Happy Hour Prohibition: The Musical – $30 per person. This musical is set in a speakeasy and set in the Prohibition Era. My family and I chose not to see this one just because there was a fee and plenty of other free shows to see

Jersey Boys – such a great show about Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons

Havana – set at The Palace of Lights, this show brings you the beat and culture of Cuba (takes me back to my time in the Cuban capital!)

The great bands on the ship that play across different bars and lounges

Plenty of comedy shows – make sure you book when you get on the ship!

SHIP ROOM

My family of four booked two separate rooms without ocean views. I always encourage people that if you go on a cruise, try to book rooms with ocean views but obviously if it’s not affordable or available, then it is definitely not the end of the world. I only encourage ocean views for two reasons. One, I think it really helps with orientation to time and feeling as though you are not holed up on the ship. A window or a balcony brings light, views, and a breath of fresh air.

But like I said before, if you can’t get a room with ocean views, then it is completely okay too! My family got non-ocean view rooms and we were completely satisfied. The rooms were on the smaller side (but to be expected with cruise ships), but they were clean. The beds were super comfortable and could be put together or turned into two beds. The TV has a huge list of movies to buy but also a great select of TV channels that plays a cycle of movies depending on genre (action, romance, drama).

Nothing better than opening the door to your room and finding complimentary champagne!

BARS AND LOUNGES

There are so many bars and lounges on the ship and they are all excellent. So many options to choose from that I didn’t even get a chance to make it to all of them

Atrium Bar: This is the center of the ship and where a lot of the main ship’s entertainment occurs. There is a stage area and a movie screen where there are nightly movies and hilarious game shows.

THE FOOD

The Local: The 24hr pub experience! The two pros of this place is that it is open 24 hrs, the food is free, and there is a great view of the Atrium Bar stage meaning you can eat and watch entertainment one floor below

The Dining Rooms: There are three dining rooms on the ship that you can eat lunch and dinner at. Unlike the other cruises I’ve been on where you had to make reservations ahead of time and to eat at an assigned time, this cruise gives you the liberty to go whenever you would like. Because there are several dining rooms, there is always plenty of space at any time and thus you can dine on your own schedule.

Every day, there is a menu posted outside the dining rooms. You don’t have to look at each of the dining rooms’ menus because they are all the same. The menu does change for lunch and dinner every day

My mom was a bit disappointed that there was no true formal night with a lobster dish as we have found on other cruise ships

The Garden Café Buffet: I have to say that usually I am not a fan of the cruise buffets. The food usually is sub-par, but I have to say I was mildly impressed with the menu at this buffet. My family and I actually ended up eating here more than the dining rooms because of the expansive options and the ever changing menu.

There are hamburger/hot dog stations, Indian food station, a hot food station that changes every day according to the theme, Italian station, cold cuts station, Asian food station, salad station, and a huge dessert station

For drinks, there is a bar and non-alcoholic beverages such as tea, coffee, and different flavored waters

Room Service: This is complimentary and 24hrs a day but there is a service fee!

The last Alaskan cruise I went on seemed catered to adults, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that this cruise really catered to family and the young kids.

Flexible dining room schedule

Plenty of activities on the ship

Friendly staff

Entertaining game shows that allows most of the ship guests to interact with each other

The buffet food is better than the other cruise ships I’ve sailed with

They have a package that every room gets on the ship – meaning that your price of the cruise comes with every ship getting a certain amount off at each excursion per port or a drinking ticket in which all the alcoholic beverages were free

They were also very big on hygiene and sanitizers

Cons

No main lobster dish

Not a true formal night on the ship (this is a pro or con depending on what your opinion of this is)

Most of the activities on the ship came with a small fee

The room service food was definitely not as good in quality as the rest of the food on the ship

London and Spain 2019

Yes, for the 2nd time on this blog, i’m writing something about travelling lol

This summer, i visited London (after leaving for 10 months... i know...), Barcelona and Pamplona with one of my besties. This journey, man, i tell you, was one of the most unforgettable and interesting ones i’ve had so far. You’ll see why as you keep reading.

The trip was, in fact, fairly short and rush to be honest. We left Hong Kong on the 1st July, arrived London on the 2nd and we were back to HK on the 11th July.

It was my friend’s first time travelling to Europe (and with such a crazy and tiring itinerary lol) so we did a bit of sightseeing together. As always, you can never get bored with London. There are so many things and places you can do and visit. So, as tourists, my friend and i went to the famous Duck and Waffle for brekkie (it was my 1st time too!). With the beautiful view overlooking London city and their iconic duck and waffle on your marble top dining table, that was literally one of the most delicious and enjoyable breakfasts i’ve ever had.

Within the real short 3-day stay in London, i’m glad that i was able to squeeze in some time to meet with some of my London friends and former colleagues. It was always lovely to see and chat with them!

Leaving London, we off to Barcelona and Pamplona, the main destinations of this trip. We stayed there for 5 days (including 1 night in Pamplona) where all the silly things happened.

Our first day in Barcelona was actually nice. We visited the Mount Tibidabo after settling ourselves at the airbnb. Mount Tibiado is the tallest mountain in Barcelona, and it’s not just a mountain, but one with an amusement park and a cathedral (we went there for the view and the latter one tho). We took metro L7 line to Av. Tibidabo, got on the bus which took us to the plaza where we took the tram to the top of the mountain. Apart from a bit of detour in finding our way to the bus station near the metro, the view from the mountain was not bad at all.

Speaking of the detour, as we asked for directions to the bus station, we accidentally came across an elegant old lady whom aunt was a saint of that cathedral as we chatted. My friend and i were quite amazed by that :O We finished the visit by having a GIANT glass of Sangria at one of the peak restaurants.

On the second day, we visited Mercat de la Boqueria and Mercat de Sant Antoni, two of the famous markets in the city centre in the morning. Mercat de la Boqueria is famous for its great varieties of food. Tapas, seafood, ham, cheese, fruits, you name it, were all there.

We tried some of the oysters and unis. fresh and yum.

While Mercat de Sant Antoni, first opened in 1882, is known for its vintage goods/ books stalls set outside the market on Urgell street on Sundays. The market reopened in May 2018 after undergoing a major renovation. Again, the food there was amazing. Compare with Mercat de la Boqueria, we found this one more local and less touristy.

After the markets, we walked around the Sinagoga Major de Barcelona, The Ancient Synagogue of Barcelona. We didn’t join any walking tour but just wandering around by ourselves. If you would like to know more about its history and have someone explains to you properly, there are loads you can join as we could see.

We then spent the rest of the day visiting Gaudí’s architecture. First off was the Park Güell. Under the crazily hot and almost-too-sunny weather, we strolled around from 3-ish pm until 7-ish in the evening. After that, we had a tasty seafood paella as dinner in a restaurant in the L'Eixample district.

After having such a big portion of paella (we tried very hard to finish the whole thing but couldn’t...), we decided to walk back to the bnb by stopping by another two iconic Gaudí buildings, Casa Batlló and Casa Milà aka La Pedrera.

On our way to these two spots, we saw a big recycle bins (you can see these bins everywhere in Barcelona) on fire, was literally burning from the inside. We immediately asked a lady who walked by and phoned the police. Seeing the smoke and the strong smell, another man walked past and asked us what happened, “The trash bin is on fire”, said my friend. ‘Oh, that’s better.”, the man replied with a relieved expression. My friend and I couldn’t quite believe what we heard. We guess he meant it was good that the fire wasn’t come from a building nearby LOL

The 3rd day in Spain, instead of staying in Barcelona, we travelled to Pamplona for the Fiesta de San Fermín (Running of the Bulls as you may heard of), one of the oldest and traditional festivals in Spain. This annual 9-day event takes place on 6 - 14 July.

But who knew we would almost missed the train to Pamplona (yes, what a ��great’ start to the trip). We literally were late for ONE minute and were told by the station staff that our train was GONE. We then headed to the ticket counter to see if there were any chance that we can take the next train. “It’s very difficult to get tickets to Pamplona today”, said the lady, shaking her head. BUT, after a bit of searching on her computer, we were so grateful that we were able to get another indirect train there (knowing that we weren’t suppose to exchange the tickets for FREE and my friend saw on the computer screen that those two tix originally costed something like €142......).

Because of the festival, nearly 99% of the hostels and hotels were booked up way ahead the festival began, even our airbnb costed us HKD two thousands something for just one night. So my advice is to book at least 10 months or a year ahead if you are planning to go. Yet, the host and the apartment were outstanding. We had a very nice chat with the retired psychology teacher/ artist and she even gave us a lift to the train station when we left.

And little did we know that the dress code for the festival was all white (from top to bottom i meant, and people were all so ready and dressed for the festival as they got on the train from different stations), we only had a white tee shirt. Luckily, we got a souvenir pack which includes a small red scarf, a foldable red fan and a festival guide by finishing a survey right outside the train station. Although we missed the opening ceremony (which started at 12noon at the City Hall), we were very excited that we got to see a spectacular fireworks display at night!

Apart from drinks and parties, family with kids can also joined the fun by buying some sort of lucky-draw tickets to redeem gifts ranging from stationery to groceries. My friend and I bought 4 tickets at €3.2, got nothing but were told that we might be able to win €2500 at the finale draw when the festival ends.

Of course, the major event of the festival was the running of the bulls (i’d like to clarify that we DO NOT support they treated the cows that way). The very first bulls run kicked off at 8am on the second day of the festival. We got there at around 7:30am but was already very crowded that we had to stand on a table to watch.

Strongly suggest early arrival at like 7am if you want to get a good spot.

Another major event took place after the bulls running was the Giants and Big-heads Parade. There were four pairs of four meters high giants, each pair came out as a king and queen, representing Europe, Africa, Asia, and America, with some smaller giants accompanied behind.

After the Giants and big-heads, the statue of San Fermin came out, accompanied by the clergy. They prayed and sang in the middle of street, the crowd was in absolute silent when this took place.

Despite an awful lot of drunk people and smokers, both my friend and I were glad that we eventually made it to Pamplona and enjoyed the festival a lot. Not only because it was something new and interested us, but also we were able to get to know more about their culture and history, celebrate together with the locals. After two long day in Pamplona, we returned to Barcelona for one last day in Spain. Yet again, who would have guessed that another ‘amazing’ incident happened when we visited the infamous Sagrada Família.

Right, here’s what happened.

We bought the ticket via its official website when we first arrived Barcelona, my friend and I actually read through the details together and confirmed all are fine. So we set off from the bnb and arrived at the Cathedral at 9am on the 8th of July. When we were about to go through the first ticket check, the staff suddenly said to us, “Wait, wait, your ticket is for the 9th, TOMORROW.” My friend and I were like, WHATTTTTT?! Are you joking?! We booked the right tickets. Then we looked at the tickets again, OH MAN, it writes 9 JULY 2019. We couldn’t believe our eyes and wanted to cry out loud... We told the Cathedral and the customer service hotline staff that we were leaving in the evening and asked if there are tickets that we can buy on the spot, but the answers were no no no. All the tickets were sold out for the day, all they could do is give us the refund.

So my friend and I sat outside the Cathedral, feeling and looking helpless, thinking how the heck we booked the wrong date... Suddenly, my friend said, “hey we got the tickets from the official website, does it mean that there are non-official sites that we can get the tickets?”. I was like, “YES YES YES!”. We then started searching on our phones like rushing to finish an exam paper before the teacher says ‘pens down’.

After 5 minutes of searching, we MANAGED to get 2 tickets at 3pm in the afternoon. My friend and I triple checked the date and time, we even ran to ask the Cathedral staff that is that we can get in with those tickets. And when we heard the staff answered, “Yes, I think so. You even have an English speaking guide to explain you everything about the Cathedral.”, we almost wanted to cry. We were SO happy that we could get in to see this masterpiece after this silly incident.

After calming ourselves down, we went back to the Mercat de la Boqueria for lunch. We queued at the El Quim and that was one of the best decisions we’ve made in the trip. We ordered their house special: fried eggs with baby squids, razor calms and slow-cooked beef plus two glasses of wine. All of them were really delicious and fresh. If you were there, this is the tapas bar that you could not miss!

And that’s it, with all those silly incidents, we back to Hong Kong with a joyful soul (and a tiring body lol). Thank you our heavenly Father for all the amazing provisions and arrangements during the trip. We couldn’t be more thankful for that!
