Caution: Graphic Photo Warning ⚠️ This November, over 40 animals were seized from a hoarding case in the North Bay Area by @northbayanimalservices andHelen Sturkey was one of them. Starved and kept inside a home with a myriad of other animals, it's a miracle she survived. The Animal Control veterinarian had recommended euthanasia for two of them, Helen being one, but we wanted to give her a fighting chance and a second opinion after living through such hell. We took all four turkeys from Animal Control on Tuesday, December 7th and drove them straight to @medicalcenterforbirds where a team of experts evaluated their conditions. Helen had such severe infection in her feet that she was immediately hospitalized and is still there being given round the clock care. She had X-rays, heavy pain meds, an IV prefusion of antibiotics and daily debriding of her wounds. So much infection was removed from her feet that enormous holes were left behind, and some secondary problems arose from her being immobile and essentially lying on her chest unable to walk. She is making progress day by day and has since started eating and standing on her own. If her feet are healed enough to come home by Monday, she will return with Carol and Twinkle after their recheck appointments. If not healing properly at that point, she will need surgery. Helen Sturkey's medical care has been the most expensive of the three turkeys who had to be hospitalized, and we are establishing up a fundraiser specifically to assist with her medical bills. As always, we are enormously grateful for our donors, volunteers, and the amazing team at Medical Center for Birds, and proud to have partnered with North Bay Animal Services to give these amazing animals a second chance at happy life. ⭐️ All donations matched up to $5000 in the month of December! Baby calves are torn from their mothers just moments after being born then the mothers are hooked up to milk machines so people can drink her milk.
