The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is a tandem two-seat, twin-engine, all-weather, long-range supersonic jet interceptor fighter/fighter-bomber originally developed for the United States Navy by McDonnell Aircraft. It first entered service in 1960 with the U.S. Navy. Proving highly adaptable, it was also adopted by the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Air Force, and by the mid-1960s had become a major part of their respective air wings.
The Phantom is a large fighter with a top speed of over Mach 2.2. It can carry more than 18,000 pounds (8,400 kg) of weapons on nine external hardpoints, including air-to-air missiles, air-to-ground missiles, and various bombs. The F-4, like other interceptors of its time, was designed without an internal cannon. Later models incorporated a M61 Vulcan rotary cannon. Beginning in 1959 it set 15 world records for in-flight performance, including an absolute speed record, and an absolute altitude record.
In 1971, the Hellenic Air Force ordered brand new F-4E Phantoms, with deliveries starting in 1974. In the early 1990s the Hellenic AF acquired surplus RF-4Es and F-4Es from the Luftwaffe and U.S. ANG. Following the success of the German ICE program, on 11 August 1997, a contract was signed between DASA of Germany and Hellenic Aerospace Industry for the upgrade of 39 aircraft to the very similar "Peace Icarus 2000" standard. The 339 All Weather Squadron was formed on July 7 1952, at Elefsis airbase, as the 339 Fighter Bomber Squadron and equiped with F-84G aircraft. In August 1959 the Squadron received the new F-84F and redeployed to Larissa airbase. In April 1960 it redeployed to the Nea Anchialos airport at 111 Combat Wing. In March 1971 it redeployed to Andravida airport at 117 Combat Wing where it is based till today. In 1973 it redeployed temporarily to Araxos airport at 116 CW, in order to perform necessary infrastructure works at Andravida for the reception of the F-4E Phantom II. After the works’ completion at 117 CW, the 339 Sqn returns and integrates in its force the new aircraft, and was renamed to 339 All Weather Intercept Squadron. In September 1978, the Sqn takes on as its main role the Fighter Bomber mission and as secondary the Intercept. It's a really philosophical question, like do I believe in pearly gates, meeting Peter and being sent to heaven or hell well, no, but do I believe there's a possibility that we are all made of energy and when someone dies, their physical form is destroyed; but that is just a shell and their energy still exists in some form. That, I do believe. But... there's still some small part of me clinging to the Baptist idea of heaven where you meet everyone you've ever lost and everything is beautiful for eternity because it means I'd get to see my mom again.

I regret that Jonathan didn't kill me and killed my mom instead because she was a nurse and she actually did something with her life that mattered. I regret not going to art school and choosing community college in the same city I lived in. I regret being young and dumb and letting my art lay dormant instead of working towards my dream and I regret all the years I let trauma steal.

PHANTOM PHOREVER  – THE LEGEND LIVES ON
This legendary twin engine beast of Mc Donnell Douglas might not be the most versatile and agile fighter of the Hellenic Air Force, but it still remains an essential component of its Tactical Air Force planning. Today, HAF still maintains in front line service two F-4 Squadrons, while the aircraft is counting more than 40 years of service. The legend still lives on.
The history of the Greek Phantoms dates back to 1972, when Greece signed a contract with United States and Mc Donnell Douglas for the purchase of 36 F-4E. During that period of time, Greece made also a purchase of two other types of military aircraft, both of them highly capable and successful. These two aircraft were the French Mirage F-1CG and the American LTV A-7 Corsair II. During the late 70s and for more than a decade, Greece was one of the few countries in Europe with so many advanced and modern aircraft in its inventory, while it was the dominant force in the region of Balkans.
The new house of the Greek Phantoms was decided to be the 117 Combat Wing based in Andravida, close to Patra city. This airport had been built in 1955 and was used only as an Air Detachment unit. After this decision, the aerodrome of Andravida was completely renovated. The older infrastructure was reconstructed and new hangars were built for the aircraft maintenance along with modern shelters.
The pilots who were chosen to visit the United States to receive their training for the new aircraft were mostly ex F-84F pilots. The reason why these pilots were chosen was simply because this aircraft was the most numerous but at the same time the oldest aircraft in the inventory of HAF and was already being phased out. The first Squadrons which were destined to receive this modern aircraft were 338 and 339 Squadrons, both strike squadrons, equipped with the Republic F-84F Thunderstreak.
The first 36 pilots were sent initially to the United States in December of 1973 while the rest followed in January of 1974. All were transferred to Homestead AFB, close to Miami in Florida where 31st TFW was based, equipped with F-4C and F-4D aircraft. The program was named Peace Icarus Ι. The first aircraft destined for the HAF, with serial number 72-1500 took off for the first time from Lambert airport in St Louis on the 29th of January 1974, with the test pilot of McDonnell Douglas, E.D. Francis at the controls. The F-4E variant was the most capable variant of the Phantom series, which performed its initial flight on 30 June 1967. It featured:
The upgraded J79-GE-17A engines, with 17,900 lb afterburning thrust.
A General Electric M61A1 six-barreled 20-millimeter Gatling-type cannon on the underside of the nose, with 640 rounds of ammunition.
An AN/APQ-120 radar. This new radar was much more compact than its predecessors, allowing it to fit into the nose along with the cannon.
A Martin-Baker Mark 7 “zero-zero (zero altitude, zero speed) ejection seats.
A tailplane with a fixed slat attached under the leading edge. The slat provided improved control authority at high angles of attack (AOA).
A seventh fuel cell in the tail above the engine nozzles.
Manual wing fold, instead of hydraulic fold.
Another main design feature of this improved version was the implementation of the leading edge slats. Those leading-edge slats, were being extended automatically when the aircraft’s AoA was exceeding six degrees, and retracted when the AoA was going back to four degrees. This feature was firstly introduced to the F-4Es in mid-1972 and was retrofitted to the older E models. A historical moment for the Greek Phantoms was on the 5th of April 1974. During that afternoon, the first six aircraft touched down on runway 34 of Andravida airport. 15 days later, on Saturday, the 20th of April, the ceremony of the establishment of the first Phantom Squadron, 339 Sq, took place. Due to the increased tensions with Turkey, a decision for a second purchase was taken after the completion of the deliveries from the first order. On the 22nd of October 1976, the Greek government announced the need for the purchase of an extra number of Phantoms. Finally on the 16th of July 1977 a second contract was signed under the name Peace Icarus II for the purchase of 18 F-4E along with 8 RF-4E photoreconnaissance Phantoms. These later Phantoms were delivered between 1978 until 1979 completing the original Phantom orders for the HAF.
The RF-4Es were delivered to 348 Squadron “Eyes” at 110 Combat Wing in Larissa. The second batch of the F-4E from Peace Icarus II enabled the establishment of a third F-4 unit, 337 Squadron ‘Ghost’, based also in Larissa. This unit assumed primary responsibility for the defense of the central and northern Aegean. At the early 80s HAF had already three Squadrons of F-4E and one Squadron of RF-4E, making it one of the few Air Forces within NATO which had so many advanced Phantom aircraft. The serial numbers of the first batch of the F-4E aircraft from Peace Icarus I were starting from 72-1500 to 72-1535. The second batch of F-4E from Peace Icarus II had serial numbers 77-1743 to 77-1760 plus two other aircraft 74-1618 to 74-1619 which were originally ordered to cover two losses which had already taken place. The RF-4E had serial numbers 70357 and 70358 and from 71761 to 71766.

                          All the F-4E Phantoms arrived in Greece with SEA camouflage (Vietnam) and had large light blue roundels. Later on many of them received an all dark blue camouflage, which was named “Aegean Blue”. In the late 1990s, the new camo of the so called “Aegean Ghost” was started to be applied to the Greek Phantoms. The process was not completed for all of them, because their retirement had already begun.
In July 1990, the US government decided to offer 28 F-4E from the Indiana Air National Guard under the Southeastern Regional Agreement (SRA). As a return, USA continued to operate its American Air Bases in Greece for another 8 years. The first 9 aircraft which belonged to the 131st Squadron of Missouri ANG, arrived in Andravida on the 3rd f August 1991. With their introduction, all the existing F-4s from the original Greek orders were allocated between 337 and 339 Squadrons, while 338 Sq received all the ex-US jets.
Despite the fact that the SRA F-4s were coming from  older production blocks (these aircraft were from Blocks No. 36 up to 41), they featured advanced Navigation and Weapon-Delivery System (NWDS), Airborne Video Tape Recorder (AVTR), Have Quick radios, and improvements to the AN/APQ-120 radar to make it more capable in the air-to-ground role. All the SRA Phantoms were wearing the standard USAF livery (American Hill Grey) while they were equipped with the smokeless J79. Their serial numbers of these aircraft were: – 67-0345, 0350, 0377,0381, – 68-0318, 0361,0363, 0381, 0393, 0394, 0402, 0405, 0408, 0412, 0424, 0426, 0432, 0438, 0440, 0442, 0444, 0445, 0480, 0481, 0496, 0506, 0515, 0517.
The F-4E SRA were finally withdrawn on the 16th of December 2005, when the 337 Sq temporary terminated its operation by withdrawing all 28 of them in order to start the preparations for the acceptance of the modern F-16C/D Block 52+, assuming its role as lead interception unit in the northern Aegean.
Two years later the 348 Squadron fleet was also enhanced with 27 RF-4Es from the German Luftwaffe. Under the NATO treaty, Germany granted a large number of RF-4E to Greece and Turkey which were being phased out of active service. These 27 examples started to arrive in the spring of 1993. Only twenty of them were used for service and equipped 348 Sq, which were added to the remaining 5 RF-4E (three of them had already been lost in accidents), while at the same time the remaining ageing RF-84F Thunderflashes, were finally retired from service. The rest of the German examples were used for spare parts. They were all wearing the “Lizard” livery. Later on some of them received a different kind of “Lizard” painting and some of them received a Vietnam camo. It is worth mentioning that HAF came twice very close to an agreement in obtaining other extra Phantoms. Once in 1987, when the Americans offered some F-4D which were being withdrawn from active service, but also from Great Britain which offered some F-4M Phantom FGR Mk 2, which were also being retired. Both offers were denied due to the fact that it was very expensive for the HAF to maintain all these different types in service.
Peace Icarus 2000: ‘The Legend Is Back!’
          After 23 years of presence over the Aegean Sea, HAF decided to upgrade the F-4E Phantom II. In the early 1990s, it began to search for an upgrade program of the existing Phantoms. That was quite logical due to the fact that the aircraft was still a very capable weapon but mainly because the replacement costs of this type were enormous. Finally when the Greek government approved the funds for this program, two candidates offered their proposals. These two were the German DASA and the American Rockwell. The first had already upgraded the German F-4F and the latter was lacking of experience but was mainly based in the knowledge and the know-how of the manufacturer McDonnell Douglas, which had recently acquired. The program was focusing mainly on the replacement of its radar, centered around the BVR capability with the utilization of the modern AIM-120 missiles. The upgrade of the electronic equipment and the extension of the service life of the fuselage. The final number of the aircraft which were going to be upgraded was 39! 29 examples from Ρeace Ιcarus Ι and 10 examples from Ρeace Ιcarus ΙΙ.
The winner was finally DASA (later on EADS), mainly because of its existed upgrade program. The contract, under the name Peace Icarus 2000, was signed on the 11th of August 1997, and the plan was that DASA was going to deliver all these aircraft by the end of 2000. The main systems supplier of the German company was the Israeli Elbit, which also had gained great experience through its own upgrade of the Israeli Phantoms, but also of the Romanian MiG-21s. Only one aircraft travelled to Germany and was used as a tested of the upgrading program, while the rest were upgraded in Greece in the facilities of the Hellenic Aerospace Industry in Tanagra. This aircraft was 72-1523 and it was nicknamed ‘Princess of Andravida’ and it served as the prototype of the program. The prototype first flew on the 28th of April 1999 and the tests took place in the facilities of DASA in Manching, near Munich, Germany.
Apart from the new electronics suite, a Service Life Extension Program (SLEP) was applied from the Hellenic Aerospace Industry to the entire fleet, in order to extend their structural life. One of the greatest tactical disadvantages of the Phantom, was the problem of its smoky engines. These aircraft were always spotted from miles away due to theirs smoke trails. This problem was greatly reduced from the modification of the existing J79-GE-17A to -17C standards. This modification was mainly the replacement of the ten combustion chambers, with newer ones along with the older fuel injectors and igniters. Some of the engines which were used to the upgraded Phantoms were -17C versions which had been taken from the retired F-4E SRA and some were modified version of the already existing -17As.
Fifteen months later and after the completion of 154 test flights, it was eventually returned back to Greece, where it continued some other trials for its weapons. Finally after two years of long delays the first aircraft were ready by the end of 2002. On December 18th, 2002, the delivery ceremony of the first upgraded aircraft from the Hellenic Aviation Industry was held in its facilities at Tanagra. At the end of this integration, the total number of the aircraft had been reduced to 36 examples due to three losses from accidents since the completion of this program.
The F-4E AUP (Avionics Upgrade Program) Phantoms were all delivered to 117th Combat Wing at Andravida and were all painted in the ‘Aegean Ghost’ scheme, similar to the one of the F-16s. With this upgrade program, this old second generation aircraft had become a very capable multi role fighter which could oppose any 3rd generation enemy aircraft.

New navigation system H-764G of Honeywell, which is a combination of  LINS and GPS
New datalink information system (DTS)
New radio altimeter ΑΝ/ΑΡΝ-232 CARΑ of NAVCOM.
New CPU-143/A central air data computer of GEC Avionics

New Hazeltine AN/APX-113(V) IFF advanced friend/foe identification system (AFIDS). This is the most disguisable feature of the upgraded F-4E ΡΙ 2000. There are four antennas on the top of the nose and are nicknamed “bird slicers”!
Concerning its weaponry, the main advantage is the ability to carry the new air – air BVR missile AIM-120B AMRAAM (it can carry up to four missiles), sacrificing their original AIM-7 capability. The aircraft can also carry the modern dispenser missile AFDS, AGM-65 missiles (A/B and G), smart bombs like GBU-10/24 Paveway II/III, Mk 20 Rockeye II along with other free fall bombs.
Compared with before the upgrade, the weapons system officer’s (WSO) role has now been upgraded to match the capabilities of the APG-65 radar that features multiple modes of operation. Furthermore, the use of the Litening pod is the WSO’s sole responsibility. An experienced WSO serves as the ‘brains’ of the tactical formation, providing regular situational awareness updates to other jets, increasing the probability of a kill in air-to-air missions or providing accurate attack parameters for air-to-ground missions. With this Litening II pod, F-4s can now also undertake non-traditional intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (NTISR) duties and launch laser-guided bombs (or designate these weapons for other types).

                338 Fighter Bomber Squadron
Callsign: Aris (Greek God of War)
The 338 Squadron was formed on December 24th, 1952, at Elefsis AB, as 338 Fighter Bomber Squadron, equipped with the F-84G Thunderjet aircraft. In May 1958 it was incorporated into the 115 CW at Souda AB till January 1960, when it was disbanded. It was formed again in August 1964 equipped with F-84F Thunderstreak aircraft.
In June 1974 the Squadron was redeployed at 117CW in Andravida AB, where the F-4E Phantom II were delivered. On 5th of August, 1991, the squadron replaced the old aircraft with upgraded version of F-4E coming from US stocks, the F-4E Southeastern Regional Agreement (SRA).
The emblem of the squadron took its present form in 1974. The God has been «modernized» in relation to the earlier emblem, since instead of a spear he is holding a 2000 lb bomb. At the background there is the international mascot of the F-4 Phantom, Spooky, as the squadron operates with this type of aircraft for more than 40 years. Inside the emblem there the inscription «H TAN H ΕΠΙ TAΣ», the phrase Spartan mothers used to say to their sons when they handed over the shield for the battle: «Return with the shield or (be carried) upon it».

The 339 All Weather Squadron was formed on July 7th, 1952, in 112 CW at Elefsis AB. It was named initially 339 Fighter Bomber Squadron and it was equipped with F-84G “Thunderjet” aircraft, the first jets of the Hellenic Air Force. After being redeployed to several bases across Greece, in March 1971 it was finally redeployed to Andravida AB at 117 Combat Wing where it is based till today.
On April 1974 the first deliveries of F-4E Phantom II aircraft started, under the program Peace Icarus I. At the end of 1997, HAF decided to upgrade the aircraft purchased under the programs Peace Icarus I and Peace Icarus II. On December 18th, 2002, the delivery ceremony of the first upgraded aircraft was held in the Hellenic Aviation Industry facilities, and so began the integration of the upgraded aircraft in 117CW. The Squadron started to receive the upgraded aircraft in 2002 and the deliveries ended in October 2005.
Both Squadrons have dual tactical role of Ground Attack and Interception, but their main roles are Ground Attack for the 338Sq and Interception for the 339Sq.

  Epilogue:
The introduction of the F-4 in the Hellenic Air Force inventory in 1974 marked the beginning of a new era for the Hellenic Air Force. The new jet not only incorporated technological advances but also contributed to a major development in tactics and aviation mentality. At that time the Phantom was the most modern aircraft of the HAF but at the same time it was also a mature jet, battle-proven in the conflicts of South-East Asia, with multi-role capabilities and unique features.
For its time, the F-4E was comparable to the F-15E Strike Eagle of today. It featured two seats, twin engines, good performance, large payload, beyond visual range (BVR) capabilities, and day and night operational capability. Until the entry to service of the F-15, the Phantom was the fighter with the greatest possible thrust! Today, Greek financial problems have impacted the military, but the Phantom still plays an important role in the defence of Greek territory. The name ‘Phantom’ is usually synonymous with the old saying ‘drink, smoke and make noise’. And yet today this jet is capable of fighting against modern opponents on equal terms. Despite being a “dinosaur” of another era, is still capable of not only engaging with more modern aircraft but also be able to maintain its dominance.

HMMMM my first thought was fulvia, antony’s second wife (possibly third, but cicero is the only source who mentions his first wife fadia so i lean towards antonia being his first wife and fulvia his second). fulvia was a fucking badass. according to wikipedia she was the first non-mythological roman woman to appear on roman coins!! antony was her third husband and by then she was already pretty politically powerful, which is obviously very rare for a roman woman at the time. i’m reading her whole wikipedia article now and WOW she was a bamf but to be brief, she helped lead a goddamn revolt in rome against octavian while antony was off in egypt like!! when will ur fave!!!! also one ancient author reports that she gleefully stabbed cicero’s tongue with hairpins when presented with his decapitated head so that’s pretty metal

Iliad x2 (SF)
My skin cracked as the dreary cold substance climbed up the surface of my arm, it dug down to my veins as it spread from my left hand to the remainder of my body. It searched for my warm heart in its journey to silence any sign of true life within me, it weaved and snaked through my veins to my brain, dulling my senses and preventing me from seeing the light of day. As my chest cracked and fell to the freezing poison I awoke from a deep sleep and the dream that haunted it. For the last 7 months these nightmares plagued my unconscious mind with delusions and dangers that were barely reachable in a conscious reality, let alone a realistic stressor. And yet here I was, sweating gallons, awake at 3 am, basked in the pale moonlight that covered me and my fiancé each night in the tall mountains we chose to live.
I pulled myself out of bed and walked over to the standing shower for the best part of what had become a nearly religious occurrence, I shut the door behind me and turned on the bathroom scone lights that hung sturdy above our mirror. I stared at myself in the mirror, inspecting myself for the slightest clue that the spine chilling dream had followed me out of my near comatose state. The only evidence left behind which after so much time had become part of my life was the deep red lines surrounding my pupils, each blood stream cascading along the surface letting me know my ocular companions hadn't rested alongside the body they belonged to. I rifled through my fiancé Nyla''s drawers looking for her saline drops and began to get frustrated as they seemed to be completely gone. I searched the counter top and my eyes feel upon a light yellow sticky note stuck to a large unopened bottle of the relieving solution, I picked up the hefty container and read the note "I hope you won't need this forever...but it seems to be a constant for now, so I got the biggest bottle they had, I love you Iliad" the note brought a smile to my face as I dripped the ichor like solution into my eyes and blinked the dryness away.
I Stowed the bottle in the drawer and placed the note on the counter before drifting into the shower and setting the water as warm as it would go. I let the comforting steam release me of my dream as I spent the next hour trying to recover from the constant horrors that hung over my head like an anvil. I was a soldier when I was young, not like any soldier alive today, I was a machine, a legitimate one, when I was only 12 years old I allowed a man who masqueraded as my father to replace each and every one of my mobile limbs with bionics. covered in a thing layer of jet back rubber they were grafted to my flesh using star like heat. What came next was year after year of new horrors, initially I was used to clear terrorist cells but when one monster enters the world, volleying parties must retaliate. by the time I was 16 I was far from the only beast walking the earth, each and every country had their own type of modern marvel to leer at. Canada created a bear, deer hybrid, it moved swiftly and killed efficiently, Mexico used their rather advanced occult storage to create various monsters that would cross the border and slaughter civilians like chupacabras.
Around the time things in Europe started to go haywire the United Nations announced it would be revoking access from any country who publicly owned a marvel, and using various peaceful individuals from all over the globe, they receded from public eye and stationed in the middle of the pacific. a beautiful flourishing city that almost no-one was given entry to, it had its own crops, its own citizens, eventually its own language, but with territory and resources like that, they soon found out they'd need their own beast.
The UN now ultimate nation dubbed themselves above biological and bionic warfare and instead stated they had found a beast that was entirely native to the planet itself to protect their waters, but they didn't show anyone what they had recovered. Some people assumed they had figured out a way to weaponize larger sea mammals and had them patrolling alongside submarines, a rumor spread out of china that the UN had armored a large swarm of flying fish that would circle the city using sonic direction. When I was stationed with other soldiers they told me their rendition, a most likely story, that the UN had captured what lived beneath the Bermuda Triangle, and that it was right beneath the floating city.
It wasn't long before the United States came to their senses and sent me out to investigate, soldiers around the world knew my name and knew the suit I would arrive places in, but in terms of going incognito my prosthetics weren't visually very different then the average bionics that floated around and commonly accompanied civilians. Due to my lack of affiliation with any specific nation and some very cunning paperwork provided by the US state department, I was allowed entry into the city on a basis of scientific development, I would be providing assistance to a Dr.Keegan Levias, one of the UN's resident bio-analysts. His job on the city was to analyze various species of plankton that they had begun using as a sort of wireless hamster wheel to power the city.
The day I was scheduled to leave my father insisted I accompany him for dinner with his wife, a young Czech women with bright blue hair. We sat down to eat at a small restaurant on the outskirts of the Florida keys, not more than 5 miles to the southernmost point. I remember sitting down with them in silence waiting for some type of response to what id started the dinner with. id started the dinner by telling my father I would not be coming back from the city, that id report back what I had found and that I would then either stay there or leave. Initially my father pulled out his phone to try and turn off my neural reception chips, and then I informed him that not only had I drained his mobile operations account of the 200,000 united nation credits that sat inside it, but that id also removed every console restriction in the net code of my prosthetics. when they took our entrees and delivered us a final round of drinks, coke for me of course, my father spoke up. you are free to do as you like, but without me your prosthesis will eventually grow outdated and you'll fail at anything you do following that moment, and you'll be alone. hearing this drove me mad and eventually I grew tired of the conversation, so I put the most on point period I could possibly put down last year a field officer told me about advanced genetics, things like recessive genes, genetic similarity, and most importantly he told me about gene matching, I read like I do and I know you're not my father, I know where you came from, I know where I came from and I know that if you try to follow me, kidnap me, de emancipate me or ex communicate me from the services I currently use, I will bury you in the cayman prison you crawled out of.

The officer handed me a folder with several papers, in the stack was a large laminated sheet with some official looking stamps, a checklist for the equipment id been issued, a payment stub for 235,000 USD split between me and the guy I had dinner with and finally...a birth certificate, July 4th 2000 Manhattan general hospital, it probably wasn't my real birthday but it worked. then at the bottom was a receipt for my implants that had been issues and updated since my birth, all issued from the Iliad corporation, and right at the top of the backside of the sheet...was a name, my name. Iliad vigor Iliad. weird they used the company's name for my first and last name, but everyones gonna use my first name anyway.

McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II: The 60 Year Old Fighter That Just Won't Die
The last American F-4s would see action during Operation Desert Storm, before being retired in 1996. The Pentagon later converted some into QF-4 target practice drones.The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II is a legendary aircraft — an icon of the Vietnam War and the archetype of the third-generation jet fighter designs that entered service in the 1960s. More than 5,000 of these heavy supersonic fighters were built, and hundreds continue to serve and even see combat in several air forces today.But the Phantom’s record in air-to-air combat over Vietnam — especially when compared to its successor, the F-15 Eagle, which has never been shot down in air-to-air combat — has left it with a reputation of being a clumsy bruiser reliant on brute engine power and obsolete weapons technology.(This first appeared several years ago.)This is unfair.The Phantom’s fundamental flaws were corrected by 1970 — while more recently, Phantoms have had their avionics and ordnance upgraded to modern standards. These modernized Phantoms flown by the Turkish and Greek air forces can do pretty much what an F-15 can do … at a much lower price.Baptism of Fire:When the F-4 came out it in 1958 it was a revolutionary design — one that went on to set several aviation records.Weighing in at 30,000 pounds unloaded, its enormous J79 twin engines gave (and still gives) the aircraft excellent thrust, propelling the heavy airframe over twice the speed of sound at a maximum speed of 1,473 miles per hour.The early Phantoms could carry 18,000 pounds of munitions — three times what the huge B-17 bombers of World War II typically carried. The weapons officer in the rear-seat could operate the plane’s advanced radar, communication and weapons systems while the pilot focused on flying.Furthermore, the F-4 came in both ground- and carrier-based models and served in the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marines. The only other frontline fighter to serve in all three services before or since is the F-35.(Recommended: How to Replace the F-35) But when the F-4 confronted the lighter-weight MiG-17 and MiG-21 fighters of the North Vietnamese air force in 1965, the Phantom suffered.In the Korean War, the U.S. Air Force had shot down between six and 10 enemy fighters for every one of its aircraft lost in air-to-air combat. In Vietnam, the ratio was closer to two to one (including other aircraft types besides the Phantom).The F-4’s primary problem was that it had no built-in cannon. Instead, it relied entirely on newly-introduced air-to-air missiles — the radar-guided AIM-7 Sparrow, the heat-seeking AIM-9 Sidewinder and the older AIM-4 Falcon.The Air Force didn’t realize those early missiles were terrible.Studies showed that 45 percent of Vietnam-era AIM-7s and 37 percent of AIM-9s failed to either launch or lock on, and after evasive maneuvers, the probability of achieving a kill fell to eight percent and 15 percent for the two types, respectively. The Falcon missiles were even worse, and the Pentagon later withdrew them from service.The North Vietnamese MiGs, equipped with both cannons and missiles (on the MiG-21), would outmaneuver the heavier F-4, which for all its speed, was not especially agile. Worse, American pilots weren’t trained for close range dogfights, as the Air Force assumed air-to-air engagements would occur at long range with missiles.Furthermore, the Phantom’s J79 engines produced thick black smoke, which combined with the aircraft’s larger size, made it easier to spot and target from a distance. On the other hand, the rules-of-engagement over Vietnam prohibited U.S. pilots from shooting at unidentified targets beyond visual range, further crippling the advantages of the missiles.Improvements:However, the F-4’s problems began to recede. Air-to-air missile technology dramatically improved with later versions of the Sparrow and Sidewinder. The F-4E model finally came with an internal M161 Vulcan cannon.Before, some Phantom units made do with external gun pods that vibrated excessively.In 1972, an F-4 piloted by Maj. Phil Handley shot down a MiG-19 with his plane’s gun — the only recorded aerial gun kill performed at supersonic speed.Eventually, the Air Force upgraded all of its F-4Es with wing-slats that significantly improved maneuverability at a slight cost in speed. New J79 engines even dealt with the problem of the F-4’s visible black smoke.(Recommended: 5 Greatest Fighter Planes of All-Time)The Navy, in contrast, perceived the problem as being a lack of Air Combat Maneuvering training, and instituted the Top Gun training program in 1968. Navy pilots went on to score a superior kill ratio over Vietnam of 40 victories for seven planes lost in air-to-air combat.The Air Force’s Phantoms claimed 107 air-to-air kills for 33 lost to MiGs, and the Marine Corps claimed three. Ground fire shot down 474 Phantoms in all services, as the heavy-lifting Phantom fighters did double duty as ground-attack aircraft.Two sub-variants of the Phantom also distinguished themselves — the RF-4 photo reconnaissance plane, optimized for speed, and the Wild Weasel, specialized in attacking enemy surface-to-air missiles defenses.The last American F-4s would see action during Operation Desert Storm, before being retired in 1996. The F-4 saw extensive use in Israeli service, scoring 116 air-to-air kills against the Egyptian and Syrian air forces, starting in 1969 during the War of Attrition.In one engagement on the first day of the Yom Kippur War in 1973, 28 Egyptian MiGs attacked Ofir Air Base. Just two Phantoms managed to scramble in defense, but they shot down seven of the attackers.The Israeli Phantoms’ primary target — and most deadly foe — during these campaigns were Arab surface-to-air missile batteries. SAMs accounted for most of the 36 Israeli Phantoms lost in action.The swan song of the Israeli Phantom force came during Israel’s 1982 intervention in the War in Lebanon, when Phantoms — escorted by new F-15s and F-16s — wiped out all 30 of Syria’s SAM batteries in the Bekaa Valley in one day without losing a single plane in Operation Mole Cricket 19.Iran received 225 F-4s from the United States prior to the Iranian Revolution. These formed the backbone of the Iranian fighter force during the nine-year-long war with Iraq. The Phantom reportedly acquitted itself well versus Iraqi MiGs, and carried out several long-range raids on the Iraqi airfields. The actual number of air-to-air kills remains disputed.21st century Phantoms:The Phantom still sees service. But it’s somewhat of an anomaly. Just compare it to F-15 Eagle.The F-15, which entered service in 1975, is emblematic of fourth-generation fighter aircraft that remain the mainstay of modern air forces today. The F-15 is also deliberately unlike the F-4. It’s a heavy, twin-engine, two-seat fighterand an agile dogfighter.When the F-15 and the lighter F-16 saw their first major air action over Lebanon in 1982, they shot down more than 80 Syrian third-generation MiGs at no loss.The supremacy of the fourth-generation was confirmed again in the Gulf War, in which Iraqi fighters shot down only one fourth-generation fighter (an F/A-18 Hornet) for the loss of 33 of their third-generation aircraft. How could the F-4 possibly keep up in this new environment?Easy — by integrating the same modern hardware used in the fourth generation.The Phantoms flown by the Turkish and Greek air forces both have modern pulse-doppler radars, which give the F-4 “look down-shoot down” capabilities. In the past, high-flying radars had trouble detecting low-flying aircraft because the radar waves bouncing off the ground created a cluttering effect. Active Doppler radars cut through the ground clutter.Modern F-4s can also fire the full range of modern ordnance such as the advanced AIM-120C AMRAAM air-to-air missile with a range of 65 miles, precision-guided munitions such as the AGM-65 Maverick, and late model Sparrow and Sidewinder missiles.As combat aircraft are essentially weapons platforms, these capabilities mean that the F-4s can handle most of the same offensive tasks a fourth-generation F-15 or Su-27 fighter can do.But surely the electronics and instruments are out of date? Not really. For instance, modernized F-4s have improved Heads Up Displays (HUDs) so that pilots don’t have to look down from the canopy to check on their instruments.Germany flew upgraded F-4Fs until 2013, and maintains them in stock in case of future need. South Korea still has 71 F-4Es (only modestly upgraded) in its 17th Fighter Wing. Japan maintains the same number of F-4EJ Kais upgraded with pulse-Doppler radars and anti-ship missiles.The Israelis pioneered the art of Phantom upgrades in the 1980s with the Phantom 2000 Kurnass, or “Sledgehammer.” Though retired from Israeli service in 2004, Israeli firms went on to upgrade Greece’s 41 Peace Icarus Phantoms, equipping them with ANPG-65 pulse-Doppler radars and the ability to fire AMRAAM missiles.Israeli upgrades contributed to the Turkish air force’s Terminator 2020, which has additional wing strakes for improved maneuverability.The 2020s have had 20 kilometers of wiring replaced for a net loss of 1,600 pounds in weight. The Turkish versions also feature a diverse array of modern sensors and electronics. Like other modern F-4s, they can deploy advanced ordnance such as Paveway bombs, HARM anti-radar missiles and 3,000-pound Popeye missiles with a range of 48 miles.The Terminators are primarily ground-attack planes … with some notoriety. They’ve bombed Kurdish PKK fighters in Turkey and Iraq in 2015 and 2016. An RF-4 reconnaissance plane was shot down over Syria in 2012, and three F-4s crashed in 2015 — earning them the appellation “Flying Coffins” in the Turkish media.The Iranian air force in 2009 claimed to operate 76 F-4Ds and Es, and six RF-4s. Tehran has reportedly modified the planes to fire Russian or Chinese air-to-ground and anti-shipping missiles. They still rely on AIM-7 Sparrows acquired second hand.Likewise, Iran relies on smuggled and improvised spare parts for its F-4s, just like its F-14 Tomcats.Iranian Phantoms bombed Islamic State targets in Iraq’s Diyala province in December 2014, and they continue to play cat and mouse games with U.S. patrols and drones over the Persian Gulf.But are souped-up F-4s really equal to fourth-generation fighters? None of these 21st century Phantoms have flown in air-to-air combat — but F-4s Phantoms have engaged in non-lethal dogfights with Greek F-16s on several occasions.They also tangled with Chinese Su-27s in a 2010 exercise — and according to some reports on the internet won zero to eight.And if you compare videos of F-4s with wing slats making a tight, 180 degree turn (see 4:25 above) compared to F-15s doing the same maneuver, you will note that they both average seven to eight seconds to complete the turn, even though the latter is purportedly more maneuverable.This doesn’t prove upgraded F-4s are superior to later designs, of course — but it does show they capable of pulling their considerable weight when compared with fourth-generation fighters.The Phantom has proven both versatile and adaptable over time. Instead, it relied entirely on newly-introduced air-to-air missiles — the radar-guided AIM-7 Sparrow, the heat-seeking AIM-9 Sidewinder and the older AIM-4 Falcon.The Air Force didn’t realize those early missiles were terrible.Studies showed that 45 percent of Vietnam-era AIM-7s and 37 percent of AIM-9s failed to either launch or lock on, and after evasive maneuvers, the probability of achieving a kill fell to eight percent and 15 percent for the two types, respectively. The Falcon missiles were even worse, and the Pentagon later withdrew them from service.The North Vietnamese MiGs, equipped with both cannons and missiles (on the MiG-21), would outmaneuver the heavier F-4, which for all its speed, was not especially agile. Worse, American pilots weren’t trained for close range dogfights, as the Air Force assumed air-to-air engagements would occur at long range with missiles.Furthermore, the Phantom’s J79 engines produced thick black smoke, which combined with the aircraft’s larger size, made it easier to spot and target from a distance. On the other hand, the rules-of-engagement over Vietnam prohibited U.S. pilots from shooting at unidentified targets beyond visual range, further crippling the advantages of the missiles.Improvements:However, the F-4’s problems began to recede. Air-to-air missile technology dramatically improved with later versions of the Sparrow and Sidewinder. The F-4E model finally came with an internal M161 Vulcan cannon.Before, some Phantom units made do with external gun pods that vibrated excessively.In 1972, an F-4 piloted by Maj. Phil Handley shot down a MiG-19 with his plane’s gun — the only recorded aerial gun kill performed at supersonic speed.Eventually, the Air Force upgraded all of its F-4Es with wing-slats that significantly improved maneuverability at a slight cost in speed. New J79 engines even dealt with the problem of the F-4’s visible black smoke.(Recommended: 5 Greatest Fighter Planes of All-Time)The Navy, in contrast, perceived the problem as being a lack of Air Combat Maneuvering training, and instituted the Top Gun training program in 1968. Navy pilots went on to score a superior kill ratio over Vietnam of 40 victories for seven planes lost in air-to-air combat.The Air Force’s Phantoms claimed 107 air-to-air kills for 33 lost to MiGs, and the Marine Corps claimed three. Ground fire shot down 474 Phantoms in all services, as the heavy-lifting Phantom fighters did double duty as ground-attack aircraft.Two sub-variants of the Phantom also distinguished themselves — the RF-4 photo reconnaissance plane, optimized for speed, and the Wild Weasel, specialized in attacking enemy surface-to-air missiles defenses.The last American F-4s would see action during Operation Desert Storm, before being retired in 1996. The Pentagon later converted some into QF-4 target practice drones.(Recommended: How to Win a War with China)Phantoms in the Middle East:However, the Phantoms proliferated around the world. The F-4 saw extensive use in Israeli service, scoring 116 air-to-air kills against the Egyptian and Syrian air forces, starting in 1969 during the War of Attrition.In one engagement on the first day of the Yom Kippur War in 1973, 28 Egyptian MiGs attacked Ofir Air Base. Just two Phantoms managed to scramble in defense, but they shot down seven of the attackers.The Israeli Phantoms’ primary target — and most deadly foe — during these campaigns were Arab surface-to-air missile batteries. SAMs accounted for most of the 36 Israeli Phantoms lost in action.The swan song of the Israeli Phantom force came during Israel’s 1982 intervention in the War in Lebanon, when Phantoms — escorted by new F-15s and F-16s — wiped out all 30 of Syria’s SAM batteries in the Bekaa Valley in one day without losing a single plane in Operation Mole Cricket 19.Iran received 225 F-4s from the United States prior to the Iranian Revolution. These formed the backbone of the Iranian fighter force during the nine-year-long war with Iraq. The Phantom reportedly acquitted itself well versus Iraqi MiGs, and carried out several long-range raids on the Iraqi airfields. The actual number of air-to-air kills remains disputed.21st century Phantoms:The Phantom still sees service. But it’s somewhat of an anomaly. Just compare it to F-15 Eagle.The F-15, which entered service in 1975, is emblematic of fourth-generation fighter aircraft that remain the mainstay of modern air forces today. The F-15 is also deliberately unlike the F-4. It’s a heavy, twin-engine, two-seat fighterand an agile dogfighter.When the F-15 and the lighter F-16 saw their first major air action over Lebanon in 1982, they shot down more than 80 Syrian third-generation MiGs at no loss.The supremacy of the fourth-generation was confirmed again in the Gulf War, in which Iraqi fighters shot down only one fourth-generation fighter (an F/A-18 Hornet) for the loss of 33 of their third-generation aircraft. How could the F-4 possibly keep up in this new environment?Easy — by integrating the same modern hardware used in the fourth generation.The Phantoms flown by the Turkish and Greek air forces both have modern pulse-doppler radars, which give the F-4 “look down-shoot down” capabilities. In the past, high-flying radars had trouble detecting low-flying aircraft because the radar waves bouncing off the ground created a cluttering effect. Active Doppler radars cut through the ground clutter.Modern F-4s can also fire the full range of modern ordnance such as the advanced AIM-120C AMRAAM air-to-air missile with a range of 65 miles, precision-guided munitions such as the AGM-65 Maverick, and late model Sparrow and Sidewinder missiles.As combat aircraft are essentially weapons platforms, these capabilities mean that the F-4s can handle most of the same offensive tasks a fourth-generation F-15 or Su-27 fighter can do.But surely the electronics and instruments are out of date? Not really. For instance, modernized F-4s have improved Heads Up Displays (HUDs) so that pilots don’t have to look down from the canopy to check on their instruments.Germany flew upgraded F-4Fs until 2013, and maintains them in stock in case of future need. South Korea still has 71 F-4Es (only modestly upgraded) in its 17th Fighter Wing. Japan maintains the same number of F-4EJ Kais upgraded with pulse-Doppler radars and anti-ship missiles.The Israelis pioneered the art of Phantom upgrades in the 1980s with the Phantom 2000 Kurnass, or “Sledgehammer.” Though retired from Israeli service in 2004, Israeli firms went on to upgrade Greece’s 41 Peace Icarus Phantoms, equipping them with ANPG-65 pulse-Doppler radars and the ability to fire AMRAAM missiles.Israeli upgrades contributed to the Turkish air force’s Terminator 2020, which has additional wing strakes for improved maneuverability.The 2020s have had 20 kilometers of wiring replaced for a net loss of 1,600 pounds in weight. The Turkish versions also feature a diverse array of modern sensors and electronics. Like other modern F-4s, they can deploy advanced ordnance such as Paveway bombs, HARM anti-radar missiles and 3,000-pound Popeye missiles with a range of 48 miles.The Terminators are primarily ground-attack planes … with some notoriety. They’ve bombed Kurdish PKK fighters in Turkey and Iraq in 2015 and 2016. An RF-4 reconnaissance plane was shot down over Syria in 2012, and three F-4s crashed in 2015 — earning them the appellation “Flying Coffins” in the Turkish media.The Iranian air force in 2009 claimed to operate 76 F-4Ds and Es, and six RF-4s. Tehran has reportedly modified the planes to fire Russian or Chinese air-to-ground and anti-shipping missiles. They still rely on AIM-7 Sparrows acquired second hand.Likewise, Iran relies on smuggled and improvised spare parts for its F-4s, just like its F-14 Tomcats.Iranian Phantoms bombed Islamic State targets in Iraq’s Diyala province in December 2014, and they continue to play cat and mouse games with U.S. patrols and drones over the Persian Gulf.But are souped-up F-4s really equal to fourth-generation fighters? None of these 21st century Phantoms have flown in air-to-air combat — but F-4s Phantoms have engaged in non-lethal dogfights with Greek F-16s on several occasions.They also tangled with Chinese Su-27s in a 2010 exercise — and according to some reports on the internet won zero to eight.And if you compare videos of F-4s with wing slats making a tight, 180 degree turn (see 4:25 above) compared to F-15s doing the same maneuver, you will note that they both average seven to eight seconds to complete the turn, even though the latter is purportedly more maneuverable.This doesn’t prove upgraded F-4s are superior to later designs, of course — but it does show they capable of pulling their considerable weight when compared with fourth-generation fighters.The Phantom has proven both versatile and adaptable over time.
