Aún buscando recuperarse de la reciente muerte de su madre, Mary Bedford (Mischa Barton), inicialmente apodada “Mouse” (Ratón) y luego “Brave” (Valiente), ingresa a un colegio privado de exclusividad femenina. Ella es la narradora de la historia, más las verdaderas protagonistas son sus compañeras de cuarto: Pauline "Paulie" Oster (Piper Perabo) y  Victoria "Tori" Moller (Jessica Paré). 

Mary, que no tardará en descubrir a Paulie metiéndose en la cama de Tori y disfrutando de una sesión apasionada, también será testigo de la repentina afición de Paulie con un águila herida y de cómo la relación entre sus compañeras alcanza un rumbo dramático cuando son halladas “con las manos en la masa” por Allison, la hermana de Tori (Emily VanCamp, en su debut cinematográfico). El temor a que tal suceso revele a sus padres religiosos la homosexualidad de Moller lleva a la joven a buscar en Jake (Luke Kirby), alumno de otro colegio, al novio ideal para matar todas las habladurías. Y a Paulie, incapaz de aceptar que su chica no la ama, a abrazar la desesperación y la locura.

La guionista Judith Thompson y la directora Léa Pool adaptaron la novela “The Wives of Bath”, de Susan Swan y la convirtieron en un relato doloroso sobre la magnitud de la pasión adolescente y la intensa aflicción del amor que debe mantenerse escondido por un supuesto bien mayor.
