Lady Reading the Letters of Heloise and Abelard
Artist: Bernard d’Agesci (French, 1756–1829)
Date: circa 1780
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Collection: Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL, United States
Description
This painting depicts a young woman lost in reverie after reading the letters of the ill-fated medieval lovers Heloise and Abelard. The objects on the table beside her—a letter, a sheet of music, and a book of erotic poetry—hint at a life of leisure and a susceptibility to love. In this early picture, Auguste Bernard drew upon history paintings by Peter Paul Rubens and Charles Le Brun, as well as Parisian traditions of genre painting and portraiture pioneered by Jean-Baptiste Greuze. Bernard worked in Paris in the early 1780s and studied in Italy for several years. Upon his return to Paris, he found his career frustrated by the French Revolution and the emergent fashion for the more austere Neoclassical style.

🌿🐑McHarrison Bucolic/Mythological AU🐑🌿
If Mclennon did Pyramus and Thisbe.
But listen, hear me out- McHarrison play as Endymion and Selene in Greek mythology.
Paul as a shepherd boy and George as a moon god since he played the moon in their Pyramus and Thisbe skit. But I also feel like George works well as a dryad nymph💖
PREMISE IDEA:
I could just make a pretty scene where Paul falls asleep tired from a day in herding sheep. He decides to take a nap under a tree unaware that it was a nymph who watched over him while he worked everyday.
One day George the nymph was feeling bold , instead of watching him while hiding among the trees, he went near the fences to get to meet him.
But hesitated when Paul looked in his direction so George immediately transformed to a tree so he wouldn't be caught.
I was getting inspired with pastoral and romanticist literature and paintings. This is just a character sheet , and mostly headcanons for the story.
Well, not really a story, more like a premise idea with glimpses of scenarios and ambiguous plotline. I was thinking of it being a combination of A Midsummer Night's Dream, myths like Pomona / Vertumnus, and Endymion. I came upon two poems that suit these two:
"The Passionate Shepherd to his Love" by Christopher Marlowe &
"The Nymph's reply to the Shepherd" by Walter Raleigh
I gained an appreciation towards Pre-Raphaelite and Rococo art because I just love the quaint and idyllic atmosphere. The French and Dutch masters are my most favorite. The way the French portray the countryside are so pretty and romanticised. Whereas the Dutch focused on actual folk art showing the daily lives of farmers.
The Pre-Raphaelites make forestlife look magical also. Favorite painters are Pierre Auguste Renoir, Pierre Auguste Cot, Peter Paul Rubens, Moritz Stifter, Vigee Le Brun etc.
I'm hoping to really get into drawing more so I could started with coming up of the actual composition for these characters.
Not really happy how the flowers and foliage turned out for the nymph. I suck at drawing leaves and plants😭

Mercredi
Quel bonheur !

Infosurr #166 has just been published:
Issue 166 opens on Robert Desnos’s Poèmes de Minuit, most of them hitherto unpublished, and then, devotes itself to the last big exhibition of Jean-Claude Silbermann, « one of the last living artists belonging to « historic » surrealism and certainly one of those who strongly contributed to the reinvention of its plastic means. » - the invitation card is reproduced on the cover. Light is also thrown on the forerunner of painted dreams, Léon Spillaert, "the creator of oneiric places which announce those of Giorgio de Chirico and Paul Delvaux". Pierre Petiot’s astonishing research on the links between surrealism and mathematics is dealt with, as well as the continuing activity of La Torre Magnetica and their collection of "Notebooks to cross fire" , together with Javier Galvez’s "radical lyricism". The issue ends on the presentation of  La Vitesse de l’ombre, which confirms that Annie Le Brun, even  better than Paul Eluard, knows "how to give us to see". In this issue, there are two new headings which should give an impetus to,  and respect the encyclopaedic rigour of Infosurr. The first one is a "Regrets" section, which will deal with publications which, in some sort of way, got lost in the avalanche of reviews we receive. The first will mention the meteoric Jean Claude Barbé and his poetry published under the splendid title Bientôt l’éternité m’empêchera de vivre. The second section is devoted to those who have departed from this world. To catch up with this delay, here is a reminder of those whom  Infosurr had forgotten (2015-2017).

Note
As an artist, what would you say are the greatest influences on your style and technique?
Mostly late 1700s/early 1800s oil and watercolor portraits (Stieler, Vigée Le Brun, etc) but also Sargent’s art as well. I love how deliberate his brushstrokes are. He seemed to use the least amount of strokes to convey the most info, and that’s something I’m trying to internalize as well, especially as I’m getting back into oil painting.
I also really enjoy all the Paul Gavarni art you share! I hadn’t heard of him before.

Une dernière fois, mon amour pour toi
Tes yeux verts, tes cheveux bruns et ton doux parfum
Ton intelligence, ta sociabilité, ton petit air sournois
——————————————————————————-
One last time, my love for you
Your green eyes, your brown hair and your sweet perfume
Your intelligence, your sociability, your sly little face
4 years I've coveted you, a love that strikes like a thunderbolt
I saw you charm those girls, drawing your desire
I wanted that look on my face, to see those discerning eyes at least once
Next to you I didn't belong, I lived a martyrdom, I was lifeless
On the beach, we laughed, we confided in each other, we even got into fights
But it was all friendship
It wasn't a mistake,
You'll always have a place in my heart
But that night, I understood, my longing, my desire that had fled
A dream, a nightmare, I don't know,
You were there on the floor, perhaps asleep or lifeless
I kissed her, not your mouth, your soul
You didn't kiss me back, you didn't offer me a single tear
A homicide, weaponless, wordless,
You were the murderer,
It was you I loved, Paul
