The Phantom of the Opera- Friday 17th February 2017
A few points on last night's performance (don't think I'll have time for a more comprehensive review!). -Harriet Jones is a fascinating Christine. I haven't seen her in the role in over 2 years and she's changed a lot. Her Christine was very hyperactive. I wasn't sure what to make of it in act one, but by the second act it really seemed to work. -Side note: Harriet did the Broadway Cadenza as opposed to the London Cadenza I've heard her do previously. -Her approach seemed to build up during the show- I really got the sense that her Christine was never really comfortable, it was like she could never feel safe, someone was always watching her. This led to a stunning version of WYWSHA- she got the balance between excellent vocals and an emotive performance. This moment was a turning point for her Christine- she was taking back control! -This made her headstrong Christine in the final lair really stand out. Loved the way she remained standing and went right up to the phantom's face in 'Angel of music, you deceived me...' until slumping to the floor. -One of my favourite moments was her PONR. My heart skipped a beat when she abruptly stopped singing, having realised she was in danger. I was genuinely frightened for her Christine, which is a difficult reaction to get out of me on my 15th time seeing the show. I was really split on her take on the role- it worked 80% of the time and the other 20% I wasn't sure. Act two was miles better than act one. -Harriet's new Aminta dress had a very elaborately decorated apron compared to others I've seen. -Luke McCall is a solid Phantom. I preferred him more this time (and I did love him last time). He's become more of a sensual Phantom, lots of gentle movements and gestures. Vocally he reminds me of a good Ramin. When I saw him with Celinde they seemed to be on a level playing field, whereas with Harriet Jones the power seemed to be in his hands. Hard to explain what I mean by that, but he is obviously reacting to his co-stars well. Overall a great Phantom! -Nadim Naaman is just awesome! I love how he hasn't gone down the arrogant aristocrat road. His Raoul is instantly caring, compassionate and loving towards Christine. By the end of the show you can't question Christine's choice- my R/C heart was beating fast! -Lara Martins and Paul Ettore Tabone work really well together. Great chemistry and they really bounce off of each other's portrayal. I felt Paul's vocals could've been stronger, but he's improving. -Solid mangers, Mark Oxtody's comic timing is great- loved him in Il Muto. Sion Lloyd is a decent Firmin, but not as strong as previous Firmin's I've seen. -Jacinta Mulcahy has come a long way as Madame Giry. Loving her take on the role. Her 'madness' during notes 2 was interesting- very commanding. Daisy Hulbert- cute Meg. Really like her take on the role. -The London production seems to be going from strength to strength. I'm still going back and feeling amazed.

“Chookas Phantom Australia” Came out of fan art retirement last week when Paul Ettore Tabone approached me to create artwork for some opening night cards for the cast of the new Australian production of Phantom. The idea of a koala music box immediately sprung to my mind, so we ran with it. Felt good to be exercising the old creative muscles again. Who knows? There might even be a follow-up down the road...

Here is a small Phantom review I never shared from the time I first saw the show live in London on December 13, 2019.
Cast: Josh Piterman, Bridget Costello, Danny Whitehead, Britt Lenting, Ross Dawes, Kris Manuel, Paul Ettore Tabone, Victoria Ward, Georgia Ware
* Britt says candiamo (let’s change) instead of andiamo (let’s go) thanks to my italian friends who told me
* bridget was wearing a short puffy wig with a lot of spiral curls
* bridget went down her knees before wishing (during journey to graveyard)
* there was a small flub before don juan where the music accidentally started too early, if you don’t know you probably didn’t notice
* i love danny his reaction to josh removing the noose, he screams “no please no”
* after the return of the ring bridget and josh their foreheads are together for quite a few seconds before she leaves
* when christine and raoul leave the lair by boat josh watches them from the lair and after he lays on the floor for quite a few seconds before singing “you alone can make my song take flight”
some additional notes:
- all the costumes were really sparkly and shiny
- i really loved bridget’s big eyes acting
- bridget literally sang the first part of i remember on her back in the boat, which i thought was interesting
- the gun shot in before the performance scared me so much
- i thought ponr was kinda boring
- josh kneeled during the proposal after ponr
- i cried during hannibal rehearsal
- the couple next to me was sleeping some of the time
- i forgot to take pictures/video of the curtain calls because i couldn’t find my phone, so here is a screenshot of a video of the same performance i found online

With the exciting news of the incoming and history-making London cast, there has also been a lot of mention about the 2019-20 cast. And rightly so, as they all did not get a proper send off, and most did not get enough time in their roles to begin with.
So here is a post dedicated to them; I truly hope that they can return to the show somewhere. They were an absolutely divine cast, and will always be part of the phamily.
Full 2019-20 cast:
Josh Piterman (Phantom), Kelly Mathieson (Christine), Bridget Costello (Christine alt.), Danny Whitehead (Raoul), Britt Lenting (Carlotta), Ross Dawes (Firmin), Richard Woodford (Andre), Jacinta Mulcahy (Madame Giry), Paul Tabone (Piangi), Georgia Ware (Meg), Zoe Arshamian, Matthew Barrow, James Butcher, Grace Castle, Sophie Caton, Sophie Cottrill, Corinne Cowling, Hadrian Delacey, Morven Douglas, Nahia Gil Elizondo, Paul Erbs, Philip Griffiths, Katy Hanna, Ellen Jackson, Adam Robert Lewis, Kris Manuel, Tim Morgan, Danielle Pullum, Rebecca Ridout, Eleanor Sanderson-Nash, Anna Shircliff, Alistair So, John Stacey, Manon Taris, Andrei Teodor Iliescu, Ben Tyler, Claire Tilling, Victoria Ward and Simon Whitaker.
Out of the 38 cast members, only 4 will be returning to the show (so far). Josh will be reprising his role in the Australian production of the Restaged Tour, while Tim Morgan, Manon Taris, and Simon Whitaker will all be returning to London.

Anna O’Byrne LND Insta Live
I learned a couple of things from Anna’s insta live during the LND Livestream:
She used to get vertigo which was tricky because they had a revolving stage.
There were no alternates, (except for the Gustaves) just understudies!
There were 5 Gustaves that they rotated through.
Ben Lewis (The Phantom) wrote all the Gustaves a letter before the show’s opening, encouraging them to believe in themselves and basically giving them a pre-show pep talk.
For safety reasons, the Gustaves were hooked onto the bridge at the end and before he runs away Christine has to unhook him without the audience noticing.
Anna’s fastest quick change was estimated around 32 seconds.
Jack Lyall (Gustave) studies musical theater now with another of the Gustaves from the show!
“Dear Old Friend” was reworked almost everyday during rehearsals and was not finalized until opening night.
Her favorite costume is the olive colored dress she wears just before the intermission.
The Peacock dress was actually really light and not heavy like some dresses (looking at you wedding dress from Phantom) but the train needed some getting used to.
Paul Ettore Tabone (Squelch) is the current Piangi in Phantom in the West End.
Anna and Simon Gleeson (Raoul) used to prank each other during their run.
While filming “The Beauty Underneath,” because they were shooting continuously and how the angles had to be, Ben Lewis had to push all the pyramids out and around while singing.
Anna suggested that the music box should play by itself instead of Christine winding it herself.
Ben Lewis wrote some of his lyrics into his mask because lyrics were constantly changing during rehearsals and previews. (There is a picture of his mask floating around here somewhere.)
Anna worked with Ben Lewis’s brother on the Australian tour of Phantom. She played Christine and he played Raoul!
She kept one of the newspapers that Mme. Giry has with a news story of Christine and her earrings from the show.
When asked if she knew if Sarah Brightman or Michael Crawford have seen the show, she said that ALW was sat next to Sarah during a production of it but got so emotional he had to leave (ew).
Anna’s favorite costume from Phantom is the Aminta dress.
When asked if she’s Team Raoul or Team Phantom, she says she’s Team Christine.

WOW.......I can’t believe it’s already been a year since I saw phantom for the first time, to think how much times have changed makes me sad and I wish I was back there now 😭
My first show was with the understudy Adam Robert Lewis as the phantom so that was REALLY exciting, Kelly was on for Christine and Jeremy as Raoul, I remeber so vividly the auction scene being so incredibly haunting I had so much goosebumps and that overture it thundered through the theatre as the gorgeous chandelier rose to the ceiling right in front of me, and when the show was over I couldn’t wait to go again the following night! ✨
The second night Tim Howar was on for the phantom and Amy manford as Christine so I got to see two different phantom and Christine’s in my very first trip to see the show, utterly breathtaking, me and my dad were sat in the third row from the stage so It was amazing to feel apart of the show it was the most emotional I have ever been seeing a show, I remember turning to my dad right after the chandelier fell and asked him how he liked it not thinking much of it and he told me it was one of the most spectacular things he had ever witnessed and he was so excited to get back to our seats for act 2, such an amazing experience! I will cherish my first two times seeing the show with so much love 💓 (not to mention Kimberley Blake and Paul Ettore Tabone were absolute showstoppers!!!)
