Hannibal, Italy arc + Gustave Caillebotte
I assembled an array of paintings and photographs through which the three of us discussed realism and expressionism, architecture, qualities of light and palette. In addition to Bacon, Gerhard Richter, Todd Hido, Gregory Crewdson and the French painter Caillebotte. - Patti Podesta, Hannibal production designer (x)

James Duval in Nowhere (Gregg Araki, 1997)
Cast: James Duval, Rachel True, Nathan Bexton, Chiara Mastroianni, Debi Mazar, Kathleen Robertson, Joshua Gibran Mayweather, Jordan Ladd, Christina Applegate, Sarah Lassez, Guillermo Diaz, Jeremy Jordan, Alan Boyce, Jaason Simmons, Ryan Philippe, Heather Graham, Scott Caan, Thyme Lewis, Mena Suvari, Beverly D'Angelo, Charlotte Rae, Denise Richards, Teresa Hill, Kevin Light, Traci Lords, Shannen Doherty, Rose McGowan, John Ritter, Christopher Knight, Eve Plumb, Lauren Tewes, David Leisure. Screenplay: Gregg Araki. Cinematography: Arturo Smith. Production design: Patti Podesta. Film editing: Gregg Araki.
I have taken the liberty of listing more cast members than usual just because Nowhere is a crowded movie, a throng of newcomers, future stars, familiar faces, and a few one-shots. It's a mess, but an intentional one, the chaotic culminating film of Gregg Araki's Teenage Apocalypse trilogy that began with Totally F***ed Up in 1993 and continued with The Doom Generation in 1995. Araki called it "Beverly Hills 90210 on acid," and that serves as well as anything to describe this freewheeling farrago of sex and drugs, as Araki puts a lot of Gen Xers and Millennials through hell. It's eye-bombing and ear-assaulting, and it contains a rape scene as well as a murder committed with a can of Campbell's Tomato Soup. In short, don't watch it unprepared.

"Lecter's kitchen is his performance space," production designer Patti Podesta said, "and while he may be performing for himself much of the time, it had to be a space that reflects his orderly, highly visceral aesthetic."
Production designer Patti Podesta's rendering of Hannibal's dining room shows a series of planter boxes set against a wallpapered background. The other wall, with textured horizontal lines, was conceived by series creator Bryan Fuller.
The dining room table was purchased new in Toronto from the Art Shoppe. The chairs from Modern Sense in Toronto. The chandelier is black Murano glass. For the centerpiece, set decorator Jaro Dick placed ostrich eggs in African feather headdresses. On the right wall: The tiered shelves for herbs. Along the back wall and at left: the wall effect created with molding.
A close-up of the walls made of moldings. The painting is "Leda and the Swan" by Boucher. "It leapt to mind when I first imagined the perverse nature of Lecter. I found that it is in the public domain and its whereabouts unknown, so a little narrative developed: Hannibal secretly owns the painting and stares at it during supper."
Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) entertains a guest (Gina Torres) in his dining room, which has one wall lined with shelves of live herbs.
Lecter's kitchen features a rolling prep table in stainless steel, a nod to medical labs and autopsy tables. The butcher block was purchased at an antique mart in Toronto. The appliance wall is covered in unpainted barn wood. The countertops are travertine. The floor is covered in ceramic tile. "I thought Lecter would need a non-porous surface he could sanitize so no forensic evidence would remain," production designer Podesta said.
Another view of the Lecter laboratory -- er, kitchen. The armchair belongs to set decorator Jaro Dick's father. "I imagined that Lecter might sit facing his kitchen, his studio, meditating on his acts and subsequent meals," Podesta said.
From a stack of images, series creator Bryan Fuller singled out a photo of the old library room in a North Carolina state building and told Podesta: "I always thought it should look like this." This is her rendering of the space.
Production designer Podesta's specification sheets for the Lecter office included antiques and a dramatic pair of drapes that are 13 feet high and made from red cotton and mushroom-color linen. "They were risky, too bold for a psychiatrist's office," Podesta said, "but not for Lecter, who challenges whomever walks in the room."
Podesta's specifications for paint and architectural trim: The wood was painted a Benjamin Moore color called Durango; the accent walls were Benjamin Moore Heritage Red.
Psychiatrist and serial killer Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen, left) and FBI profiler Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) talk in the doctor's chambers, based on an old library room in a North Carolina state building.
Lecter's desk chair, which has a tightly channeled leather back, was bought from Kennedy Gallery in Toronto. "It's a strange traditional leather chair with wood arms," set decorator Jaro Dick said. "It looks like it might have originally been an old English sports car seat, repurposed."
By contrast, FBI profiler Will Graham lives in a homey farmhouse. "Will chooses to be set in nature, with his dogs and his motorboat parts. He needs solitude," production designer Podesta said. "We found a brilliant untouched farmhouse location. Some of the furniture and paintings belong to the owners. It's tender and calming."
Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) in a pensive moment at a crime scene, a room designed by Matthew Davies, who took over for Podesta after the pilot was shot. "The malachite paper was actually printed from a high-resolution sample we found and tiled into a wallpaper design," Davies said by email. "The surface was then lacquered to give the depth of a polished finish."
The layout of the crime scene -- a hotel suite -- is a faithful reproduction of Room 237 from "The Shining," with some adjustments. On the far wall, in the bedroom, is wallpaper obtained from Astek in Van Nuys. "I love wallpaper," production designer Davies said. I grew up in the U.K. and I'm obsessed with it." (Matthew Davies)

“I found a farmhouse outside Toronto, untouched, habited by the original owners. This became our backstory for Will: he purchased the house and land and just moved in.
"He lives in the downstairs, so he can be aware of anyone showing up outside. We repainted it all: a deep, dull blue/green. Some of the furniture, paintings and books belong to the owners of the house (who are the most fabulous couple - he was a motocross champion in the ’60s, she paints). The rest of the furniture was accumulated by Jaro and is a conscious hodgepodge, unmatched, not theatrical in any way. Will lives there with his dogs, his motorboat parts and his fishing tackle. He does not have a computer and does not bring work home.”
(Patti Podesta, Hannibal’s production designer)

Over the past five years, the winner of the ADG's period film category went on to win the Oscar in production design twice, in 2013 for The Great Gatsby and in 2014 for The Grand Budapest Hotel. The production design Oscar went to the winner of the fantasy category,Mad Max: Fury Road, in 2015. And last year, La La Land picked up the ADG award in the category for a contemporary film on the way to winning the Oscar for production design.
This year for the first time, ADG will present an award for feature animation. The nominees are Cars 3, Coco, Despicable Me 3, The Lego Batman Movie and Loving Vincent.
Underscoring its move to recognize animation, ADG is also presenting its William Cameron Menzies Award to Ron Clements and John Musker, directors of Disney animated films such as The Little Mermaid and most recently, Moana.

The Black Phone (Scott Derrickson, 2022)
Cast: Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Ethan Hawke, Jeremy Davies, E. Roger Mitchell, Troy Rudeseal, James Ransone, Miguel Cazarez Mora. Screenplay: Scott Derrickson, C. Robert Cargill, based on a story by Joe Hill. Cinematography: Brett Jutkiewicz. Production design: Patti Podesta. Film editing: Frédéric Thoraval. Music: Mark Korven.
Horror movies usually don't scare me: I know their tricks and tells, and as an amateur film scholar I'm as absorbed in the techniques of camerawork and editing as I'm involved with the story. So The Black Phone, which blends two horror movie tropes, the serial killer and the ghost story, never made me jump out of my seat or threatened to come back at me in my dreams. Still, it's a good one, with some involving performances, especially by the young actors Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw but also by the invaluable Ethan Hawke, even hidden behind some scary masks. It's as much a story about the dark side of childhood -- Finney (Thames) and Gwen (McGraw) are abused by their father, played by the usually creepy Jeremy Davies, and Finney is being bullied by some of classmates -- as it is about predators and ghosts. But Scott Derrickson handles both sides of the story with finesse and without too many horror movie clichés.
