Rockford, Illinois (Part One)

This is Amtrak number 372, the Black Hawk, heading for Chicago; it’s seen here crossing over the Rock River at Rockford, Illinois.

This train, the Black Hawk, seen operating on Illinois Central’s Iowa Division, was discontinued on September 30th 1981—the final day of the fiscal year for the U.S. government. Power for the train this day is GE P30CH number 701, which is a little over a year old when this image was made.

Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum’s steam locomotive Southern Railway 630 crosses over the CSX W&A Subdivision as it heads to East Chattanooga, Tennessee with a trainload of passengers, on April 27th, 2024.

According to Wikipedia: Southern Railway 630 is a 2-8-0 "Consolidation" type steam locomotive built in February 1904 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) of Richmond, Virginia for the Southern Railway as a member of the Ks-1 class. It is currently owned and operated by the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga, Tennessee where it resides today for use on excursion trains.

The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum was founded as a chapter of the National Railway Historical Society in 1960 by Paul H. Merriman and Robert M. Soule, Jr., along with a group of local railway preservationists. They wanted to save steam locomotives and railway equipment for future historical display and use. Today, the museum offers various tourist excursions from stations in Chattanooga and Etowah, Tennessee.

Help save a historic Milwaukee Road Depot in rural Charles City, Iowa! Our museum, the American Passenger Train History Museum, was asked to lead the project to save this relic of the city. We have already raised $150,000 towards this project - But we need your help raising the remaining $200,000! Please donate! Once the money is raised, our museum will move the depot from its current location along the CP railway, south to our museum grounds on the former Charles City Western interurban railway! Once there, we will set it on a basement/foundation and begin restoring the building to be used as our museum headquarters and ground entrance, as well as a trailhead for the Charley Western trail around town, and as community meeting rooms.

Please help us save this beautiful building and preserve a piece of rural America’s and Charles City’s storied past! Spring Rose Farms is situated in the country close to some interesting historical sites. As we are very fond of of years gone by, but not forgotten we will share from time to time glimpses into the significance of landmark Epoch Mobile Times. Tulip Trestle was built in 1906. It is the longest rail trestle in Indiana. At that time it was the 3rd longest rail trestle in the World. It has 18 towers for support. This massive structure was built using mostly Italian immigrant laborers. The laborers were paid up to 30 cents an hour, which was considered to be an excellent wage at the time. It was built for train travel to transport coal from Greene County mines to large cities, such as Chicago.
