Through the Hudson Highlands Here we see a New York City-bound train powering through a short tunnel and then rolling into the tiny village of Garrison, New York. The burg is located on the Hudson River directly across from West Point, in the Hudson Highlands. The two locomotives, EMD FL9s, that are powering the train—pushing, in this case—are unique, built specifically for operation in the Park Avenue Tunnel and bowels of Grand Central Station. This line is formerly the New York Central, which was four tracks wide for much of this stretch down to The City. Three images by Richard Koenig; taken in the fall of 1988.

It’s time for MetroNorth and the MTA to tell us, candidly and truthfully, exactly what is going on with this railroad. The fact that the management is patently unable to run this railroad is obvious to all—but what is their plan to address this? It is my considered opinion that MetroNorth does not possess the requisite talent or equipment in order to run the railroad properly. These trains are held together with spit, glue, and duct tape. Poorly trained and unsupervised mechanics lead the way. The lack of back-up trains at the ready is a disgrace, especially when one considers the cost of a monthly ticket for daily commuters and the inconvenience they experience due to cancelled or overcrowded trains. However, the ticket machines, E ticket app, and onboard credit card machines are at the ready—those work just fine. The priority of a railroad should be to provide excellent service to their riders. MetroNorth seems to have lost sight of that primary objective. (at Peekskill, New York)

Breakneck Ridge

We’re on Metro North’s Hudson Line at the seldom used Breakneck Ridge stop. This is the former New York Central four-track main line, a portion of its famous water-level route.

Looking at an Amtrak timetable from 1979 leads me to believe this is train number 73, the Empire State Express, but I’m uncertain.
