Took a walk through Inwood Hill Park Friday and finally saw an interesting site I've heard about, the Indian Caves. Not on the official park map, just Google it and you'll find them along one of the pathways near the lower part near the springs. And ancient area used by the Lenape hundreds of years before the settlers came. The High Bridge over the Harlem River, circa 1900. Built in 1848, the High Bridge spanned the #HarlemRiver connecting the #Bronx to #Manhattan to transport clean water via the new Croton Aqueduct. The High Bridge was modeled after the great #aqueducts of the Roman Empire and remained in use for the #Croton water system until 1955. The deck remained in use as a pedestrian bridge until the 1970's when it was closed due to vandalism. The city began restoring the bridge in 2012 and it officially reopened in 2015. The Billings Arcade in Fort Tryon Park is a remnant of a mansion that predates the 66-acre green at the northwest tip of Manhattan. Made of Maine granite, the 50-foot-tall arches were part of a brick driveway for Tyron Hall that industrialist Cornelius K. G. Billings built on the site and completed in 1905. John D. Rockefeller purchased the Billings Estate in 1917 and ten years later he hired the Olmsted Brothers, a landscape architectural firm owned by the sons of Central Park co-designer Frederick Law Olmsted, to develop a concept for a park that incorporated existing structures on the rocky topography. The George Washington Bridge was originally planned for train traffic on the lower level! The bridge was constructed between 1927 and 1931 with only one level holding six traffic lanes. But the bride's chief engineer Othmar Ammann had the foresight to make the bridge strong enough to later add an additional level for light rail. Another proposal routed the A subway line over the lower level of the bridge to Fort Lee. The lower level's construction started in 1959 but Robert Moses and the Port Authority scrapped the light rail, instead, adding six more traffic lanes. The second photo shows the bridge in 1941 before the lower level (nicknamed Martha) was added. Scenes from our stair-crossed [sic] walk in Fort Tryon Park this afternoon. The first photo is, believe it or not, the tail end of a groundhog as it vanishes into a hole downslope from our path. We did not know there were wild groundhogs in Manhattan, but we saw it very clearly as it lumbered across our path. I was so stunned that I didn’t get my phone up to take a picture until it was almost too late. . Many stone stairs later and we were up near the Cloisters checking out pin-striped flowers and plants with interestingly serrated leaves. .
