Eye Color: Her eyes are a dark green with a yellow center.

Skin Tone: Light olive tone with peach undertones. Has a flush of freckles all over her face. She also has light rosacea on her cheeks, nose and forehead.

Habit, Martha

granted, i DID do a lot more gaming towards the end of the year, BUT i sae someone else do it and i also want to do it.

2024 in review: video games I played edition (regardless if I beat them or not)

Pokemon Violet: apparently this was my most played game in january and i just remembered that it was because of the DLC. the hidden treasures of area zero was... okay. i liked the teal mask part a lot. it was goofy at times, but the story and pacing was solid. i did NOT like the indigo disk part much, aside from the story. it's a lot of tedious grinding having to complete tasks and get enough BP for them to release more pokemon into each quarter. i DID like returning to unova, though. black/white is probably my favourite pokemon game. my feelings on scarlet/violet as a whole are rather mixed. the DLC didn't improve on the issues i had with the base game, and nintendo pushed this DLC so hard. i'm glad they slowed down with releasing pokemon games because the scale is getting too big for their expected development period. i'm happy they're taking their time with legends Z-A

Pokemon Black/White: if you couldn't already tell, i started 2024 off with a huge pokemon phase. i think i officially started this game in 2023, but played at least half of it in january. it's so good. i love the story and the pacing and the MUSIC oh my god the music. the elite four kicked my ass i'm ngl so i never got to the end of the main story. hopefully some day.

Pokemon X/Y: honestly only started playing this because of the new legends game announcement and it didn't last long. it was okay. i think i got to the second gym and that's about as far as i got. for some reason a france-themed pokemon region is really funny to me.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: another one i started in 2023, but hey i never said i had to play it for the first time in 2024. mixed feelings about this one too, but for different reasons than scavio. i did really enjoy totk, but i think between this and how much i played botw (which i started playing again recently but i've talked about it so much i don't think i'll include it here), it just became more of the same. maybe i'll revisit it later in the year and see how it hits then. i will say though, it's really fun to worldbuild using the lore from this game.

Hades: BELOVED!!!!! beloved beloved beloved. i love this game so much. the art style is so good, zagreus is a delight, the gameplay is satisfying, you get the idea. i honestly played very little else once hades 2 went into early access and i couldn't play it for a few months, so i finished the main story last year (after having the game for like. 2 years). speaking of....

Hades 2: MY BELOVED!!!!!!!!!!!!! it's very familiar if you've played hades, but a lot is different. the scale of the story itself is much bigger than in the first game, and the narrative is a lot more complex. melinoë is also a delight, and i'm a huge fan of her gameplay. there's not really a good side or a bad side, but you're led to believe you're fighting for the good side because that's what melinoë believes. she's such a fascinating character, and the fact that this game is still only early access blows my mind. i played nothing else from july to september. 11/10 game, one of my favourites.

Resident Evil 4 (2023): hi hello i'm annoying about this game. i didn't expect to play this game this year, much less enjoy it as much as i did, AND YET. i really liked how the characters were written in this game. i haven't played the original, but i feel more for them in the remake than i do in what i have seen of the original. it's kinda funny because the plot of the game is really serious like, threat of an apocalypse, main character infected with dangerous parasite, themes surrounding trauma and change, etc. but it also features World's Most Yeetable Man (according to residents of this one village in spain).

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom: GOD I LOVED THIS GAME!!!!! it was both familiar and brand new, with the return of classic zelda enemies like peahats and redeads paired with protagonist zelda. and zelda is SUCH a delight here as well. i loved her gameplay and how it kind of forced you to get creative and had the subtle tones of necromancy at times. the story isn't anything particularly groundbreaking, but i enjoyed it nonetheless. it was surreal to see a game that wasn't a part of the botw era but was made after the fact and how the botw era impacted the design and UI. i strongly believe they started work on this before totk was released.

Resident Evil 2 (2019): i had a phase and now this franchise is a special interest so i played a lot of these games towards the end of the year. anyways re2 beloved. the replayability is wild, since there are significant story differences depending on who you choose to play as and in which order. it's also just a lot of fun imo. my aunt knows when i'm playing this game because it is actually pretty scary and i'm not. quiet when i get startled akdnskdjdj. the story isn't too complex but it also centres around a city being controlled by a corporation and features two protagonists who have no clue what's going on which resulted in this anti-capitalism narrative which is a little bit funny. it makes it almost satirical considering it's a zombie apocalypse game

Dark Souls Remastered: hoooooooly shit i suck at this game lmao

Resident Evil 3 (2020): i honestly expected to enjoy this one more than i did. i really was having a good time up until the hospital sequence, and then it kinda went downhill for me. one good thing i will say though is that despite seeming like it should happen after re2, it actually starts before and ends after re2, and happens in the same place. you just have a different protagonist and focus, but in both games, there's this continuity that make it into this sort of non-linear story spanning across both games. i watched a chronological order cutscene movie of both games and it was one of the best things i've ever seen.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard: ngl i hate that this game is good because i can't get very far in it due to Scary Man With Axe chasing me around :( so like.... mixed feelings but only because this game is fucking terrifying and i haven't gotten very far in it at all. despite that, i think it was a solid franchise reboot and the new plot they have going is really fascinating. shaking mia violently i need to know more about her. capcom. capcom please put her in the next game pLEASE DON'T FRIDGE HER AGAIN PLE-

Resident Evil Village: i expected to enjoy the first two sections and not like the last half of the game but it turned out to kind of be the opposite. the first half of this game is more classic survival horror, between being pursued by an angry 10 foot tall lady whose kids you just murdered and whatever the hell that giant demon baby was, whereas the second half is more action oriented. i REALLY liked the factory part, and even chris' part (surprisingly, since i do not like chris much and this game is why). the ending always destroys me though like... ethan was such a different protagonist to others in the franchise (the closest to him i would say is claire, but even then, chris taught her a lot of what she knows and she's got more skills than the average civilian). i'm gonna miss him in the next game, especially if they continue with either mia's story or rose's story. i haven't played the DLC yet and i'm on the fence about getting it, though.

Resident Evil Revelations 2: LAST RE GAME I PROMISE. it's extremely underrated tbh. i'm only like maybe 1/5 of the way through, but i love how you go between past (claire and moira) and present (barry and natalia) and how the story unfolds through that switching perspective. they probably won't, but i hope capcom remakes the revelations games.

Cult of the Lamb: honestly didn't get very far into this one, but it's morbidly adorable. 100/10, i love my little cult leader lamb.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: GOOD GAME. AMAZING GAME. i'm not too far into this one either, but hooooooooly fuck. it's so good. geralt is such a Guy and i'm obsessed with how he solves problems. he really just gives the aura of guy who is trying his best but people hate him anyways. ciri is so blorboable like she's jusg blorbo shaped. i love her so much (yes i may have started playing tw3 because of tw4 announcement, what about it?)

Baldur's Gate 3: i keep getting stuck but i love this game. i understand how it won goty now. i feel like it would be so confusing if you haven't played d&d irl though. i also like how they integrated the whole "here is your character. they are Your Character, and not a predetermined protagonist or one meant for you to project onto." you get to imagine their backstory and shape their personality through decisions. i was going to play a very serious, lawful paladin character but like an hour and a half in they broke their oath and then went off the shits so they went from the lawful good character i envisioned to a chaotic neutral force of nature. i love them so much.

Elden Ring: i'm just bad at soulslikes i think. this game is gorgeous though, i'm just not far enough into the story to make a solid judgement on the game itself. soulslikes in general have a steep learning curve and are notoriously difficult. i keep dying 😔

The BG3 Pokémon teams, Halsin and Minthara edition! I'm still working on Jaheira and Minsc, since I want to get more info on them outside of BG3 to form their teams. Maybe I'll play BG2 and BG1, we'll see if I can afford to do it. But for now, here's two more teams I thought a lot about. :]

It's a big flower monster that can help potientally avoid a fight with its rad ass smell. Amazing. Much Halsin.

Arboliva

It's a very sweet Pokémon, and Halsin would absolutely let it give out its oil/olives to the tiefling refugees and random weak Pokémon he finds.

Ampharos

“It gives off so much light that it can be seen even from space. People in the old days used its light to send signals back and forth with others far away.”

Halsin isn't really one for technology and over advanced stuff. So he communicates with Ampharos instead.

(Call Lightning was also reaaalllyyyy useful and I've come to associate it with Halsin)

Kangaskhan

Okay, so tell me why Halsin WOULDN'T want the protective powerhouse that is Kangaskhan.

Golduck

Araquanid

I like to think Araquanid was her first, since she was raised in a household that worshipped the spider god. Fierce, but capable of being sweet. On rare occasions.

Samurott

Samurott is a very paladin Pokémon.

I actually chose Unovan Samurott over Hisuian Samurott because I don't think she really needs the Dark type– they're actually both really stern in their Pokédex entries, and it just… feels better idk.

Grimmsnarl

“With the hair wrapped around its body helping to enhance its muscles, this Pokémon can overwhelm even Machamp.” (Pokémon Shield)

A morally grey-coded Pokémon that is also an absolute unit? Fuck yes. Absolutely Minthara coded.

Drapion

“Possessing a sturdy build, it takes pride in its strength, taking down foes without using toxins.”

Of course, the prideful Poison/Dark bug is going on Minthara’s team. It really works for her, especially if you stick with the Absolute stuff.

Scolipede

“Highly aggressive, it uses the claws near its neck to dig into its opponents and poison them.” (Pokémon White)

The Paladin needs her poisonous steed!! Her very aggressive steed that tolerates her and her alone!!

Banette

“BANETTE generates energy for laying strong curses by sticking pins into its own body. This POKéMON was originally a pitiful plush doll that was thrown away.” (Pokémon Ruby)

She's a Vengence Paladin that put parasites in her brain while under the Absolute for power. She and Banette get each other.

I should clarify, I'm wording everything on this blog as carefully as I possibly can, if I am uneducated please politely re-inform me! I am likely just uneducated and I promise you I will easily change my mind if you correct me!!!

I personally see kinning in the otherkin sense and the relate-to sense as two separate things; personally, I feel like there should be a term to separate the two better, as I understand that otherkin is a DISTINCT experience from simply relating to a character in a way that you see yourself as them; as such, in my Carrd and here please do not mind the term "kinning" being used for the latter, I am very open to a better term being used as I wish to respect everyone I can, and I find "relate kinning" can be very beneficial to someone, but deserves to be classified as something distinct.

Synpaths. The term you're looking for is synpaths, Axon.

Personally, identifying as an otherkin is a means for me to cope. Nope, you're Heart Axon, in the flesh. You are just him. It's okay, you were taking baby steps.

I don't see myself as Heart in a past life nor Heart spiritually in-general, rather that I am something along the lines of Heart reduced to a human form, or something like that, but do use them as an integral part of my identify and identify as it for personal reasons.

Update to this ^^^^ I identify as an alternate universe of a villain version of Heart, in some sort of Tumblr ask blog-multifandom-palooza-type deal. I am Heart, just an AU of him where he's human and everything's just slightly off and he desperately wants to be himself again because he knows he needs to be.

-Heartkin, goes hand-in-hand with idkin, I identify as Heart from Chonny's Charming Chaos Compendium! I think of myself as an alternate universe version of my AU version of Heart from Untitled Chonny Jash AU. :)

-The Robber from Ain't No Rest For the Wicked (Chonny Jash's version), this kinda goes hand-in-hand with being Heart as they're kinda blended into one kintype for me. I liked to rob people lots and be evil lots.

-Stick figurekin, a very popular fictional species dictated by skinny bodies, really long legs, shoe feet, and a love for art and fighting!

-Grimmchildkin, I like to think of myself as a Grimmchild that's "human" form is Heart! Or, alternatively, Heart's "furry" form as Grimmchild!

Zuzu's Bug-ventures: Home Edition!

I'm a bit late posting this, but I found a lot of friends last week! I couldn't ID a lot of these, unfortunately. First up, the "probably aphids trio".

Unsure of ID, possibly a pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum). A lot of the other things I found didn't seem native to North America

Unsure of ID, possibly also some kind of aphid. Bad photo, I know. My phone camera is becoming more and more dogshit every day

Unsure of exact ID, but it's definitely a skipper butterfly, either Polites peckius (Peck's Skipper) or Epargyreus clarus (Silver-spotted Skipper). Still can't get a good shot of these guys, they're lightning fast

Unsure of ID, possibly an Eastern tiger swallowtail (Papilio glaucus). This butterfly was zooming around up near the roof. I just kept snapping photos until I got one that helped me sort of identify it.

Unsure of ID, possibly pseudoedophrys hilleri, which is a kind of broad-nosed weevil. It's dead and suspended in an abandoned spiderweb.

An assassin bug nymph (Reduviidae family). Kind of cute tbh. I haven't seen an adult one yet.

A White-striped Running Crab Spider (Philodromus rufus). Finally an identification I can be confident in! Crab spiders are so funny, I love them

An Eastern leaf-footed bug nymph (Leptoglossus phyllopus).

And finally, a lady beetle with a parasitic fungus called Hesperomyces virescens. It doesn't usually kill them, and honestly it looks kinda neat. I didn't notice it until after I took the photo.

(Here's another screenshot edit I commissioned from @paimaniagalaxia. This is from 'The VVV' episode. Right now, that one is my favorite because we get to see a lot of Black Hat. As you can see, there are stark differences in Esther and Black Hat's facial expressions. Even though she loves her Uncle, she doesn't always condone his actions. For example, making Flug fight Mascara Macabra while he was controlling Dementia. Here's how I think this scene would play out with Esther.)

Dementia straightened up as the mask finally took full control of her. "Yes, yes." She said as she turned back around. Her voice was synthesized and sounded like both her voice and a mans were talking at the same time. "This host is so much stronger. Esto es increíble! This girl is a real monster." She flexed and felt her biceps. She glared up at the screen with a big grin on her face. "Well, Charrito? How many more do I break for you to come down?"

Black Hat merely cocked his eyebrows at her and Esther looked up at him. Everyone else in the arena turned to Flug, who now had a spotlight shining on him. The scientist made some terrified noises as he realized that he was going to have to go up against Dementia. Everyone started laughing.

Dementia briefly look of disbelief on her face. "What? You're kidding me? That lunch bag?" She started laughing as well.

Black Hat threw down his glass of 'wine' and laughed as well. Esther had a look of fear and worry on her face. They couldn't really expect Flug to fight her, right? When she felt her Uncle wrap his free hand around her to hold her in place she knew he ment it. She leaned against her Uncles chest and tried to find some form of comfort in his heaving form.

Black Hat spoke when he was done laughing. "Doctor, be a lad and bring her back."

He gave his boss a nervous look. "Uh, sir. Wouldn't it be easier to put a job posting online instead?"

Black Hat gently nudged Esther off of his lap and she moved to stand beside his throne. He literally phased through the screens with a terrifying look on his face. He glared at Flug and drooled a bit. "OBEY!"

Flug was transformed into a luchador uniform. A purple mask with red accents around the eyes appeared on his paper bag. He now sported a purple tank top with red accents on the straps. A sandwich picture was plastered right in the middle of the tank top. A white elbow-length fingerless glove covered his left arm. Instead of a glove on his right arm, there was a gold-colored wrist cuff. His shorts were also purple with red on the bottom. His shoes were red as well and he hand on white knee braces.

"Sorry, sir." Stammered Flug. "Just getting rattling, sir."

He made his way to the wrestling ring. "Of course, it had to be me." He fumed to himself. "I don't get paid enough to clean up after this lizard brain mess everytime-" He cut himself off when he tried to climb into the ring and briefly got tangled in the rubber wires.

Dementia laughed when he fell flat on his face. "I’ve had tacos with more spice than-"

Flug stood up and brushed himself off. "Shut up, you uncreative parasite!"

"Let's find out if your whole body fits inside that little bag!" She then charged at him on all fours.

Flug flinched. "That must be a metaphor, right?"

The announcer popped in behind him. "No. No, it's not."

He gained a hard look on his face. "Is that so?" He struck a pose. "Hat bots, attack!"

Two huge hat bots landed in the ring. One had on a leopard print luchador uniform and the other had on a green and pink one.

"What a twist, ladies and gentlemen!" Exclaimed the announcer. "Will El Alebrije be able to defeat that pair of mechanical grills?" Flug turned to leave but was stopped when the announcer spoke again. "Aaaand, they're junk."

The scientist turned back around in disbelief. "But, how?"

Dementia laughed on top of the now ruined robots, their heads in her hands. "You're next, bolsa!" She literally ran her tongue over her sharp teeth.

Esther glanced at her Uncle and noticed he was completely engrossed in the fight. She quietly took a few steps back and teleported herself next to the ring. Summoning a small glass platform, she hopped on it and peeked into the ring. She looked just in time to see Flug starting to panic. He turned to the crowd and quickly found 505. "Quickly, 505! Hand me the Tranquilizator!"

The bear turned to him and shrugged. It looked like Flug was trying to not lose it. "What do you mean you don't have it?! I thought we brought it!"

He turned around to see Dementia wrap her hair around him and toss him across the ring. When he sat up she was looming over him.

"What's wrong, chico holgado? Are you scared?" She said mockingly.

Esther couldn't take it anymore. She climbed into the ring and ran straight for Dementia.

"Dementia," Said Flug. "stop this at once."

She wagged a finger at him. “There is no more Dementia. Just Mascara MacabraAAAAHHH!”

She yelled when Esther pulled on her long hair. Flug jumped and his sights immediately went to the small preteen. “Esther?!”

“Esther!” Thundered Black Hat. Fear could be heard seeping into his words. “What do you think you are doing, young lady?!”

“Saving Dementia!” She answered.

Dementia yanked her hair out of her hands and turned to her. “Kid, get out of here. I don't fight children. They’re too easy to beat.”

Esther glared at her and kicked her in the shin. The older woman merely grunted. “Let Dementia go right now!” She made an attempt to punch her, but the older woman grabbed her by the back of the shirt. When she was lifted at eye level with her she took the opportunity to kick her in the chin. “I said let her go, right now!”

Dementia rubbed her chin as Esther tried to reach for the mask. “Okay. I’ll make an exception for you.”

The small preteen was about to say something, but Dementia threw her out of the ring before she could even make a sound. Before she hit the ground black shadows swallowed her and she was dropped onto someones lap. She looked up to see her Uncle.

“That was idiotic and dangerous, young lady.” He scolded as he wrapped his arms around her. “Let the adults handle this. You’re much too young to be getting directly involved with advanced villains like Mascara Macabra.”

Esther sighed as guilt gripped her. “I know. I just wanted to help. I’m afraid for Dr. Flug and Dementia.”

Black Hat briefly petted her head. “I know, baby.”

“Am I in trouble?”

“Not this time. I’m not going to punish you for trying to help someone. But, I except you to stay with me until this is over. Understand? You gave me quite the scare”

“Yes, sir and I’m sorry”

“Good.” He shifted so she would be more comfortable and kissed her on the head. “It’s okay. Now, let’s see how Flug handles this, shall we?”

For a moment... the briefest of beautiful interludes between his skimming of text and his abuse of the waiter, she thinks that he just might actually be taking the situation seriously after her heartfelt plea... --- she should have known better. Chicken alfredo or --- ugh. He was just trying to wear her down, as he had been for the past hour... as he had during every meeting they'd had over the past six months... but whatever fuming reaction he's prodding for with that characteristic gaslighting, he won't get it. She keeps her composure, pitch lips pursed to a flat line, her brow furrowed with an absolute lack of amusement. He reduced the souls that she reigned over, her people, to slaughter-fodder and job security. She can't help the comeback that slips from her forked-tongue as she leans back in her seat, arms folded under her breast and one leg crossed over the other. ❝ ... Fair point. I guess you have to make yourself useful to Heaven somehow. ❞

For a moment... the briefest of interludes between him condescending to her and singing his own praises --- she looks far too much like her Mother. The first course arrives and, as expected, he pays more attention to the empty carbs than the subject at hand. Despite his claim, she couldn't help but to wonder if this whole situation really was nothing but a fucking joke to him... but when his clawed gloves float the freshly edited proposal back into her line of sight... it isn't a joke. It's the furthest thing from it. There it is, in black and white... never shades of grey. Her frustration, disdain, pride... it all falls from her face like the marble of a weathered statue crumbling to dust. The color drains from her apple-blossom cheeks, her expression falling as her eyes read, and re-read those words over, and over --- as if that could change them. This... couldn't be happening. Severe population control of Hell ?! Preferred by the Council ?! No --- no, no ! How could they do this ?! Why were they giving Adam so much power ?! How could they sign off on something so brutal, so savage ?! She shouldn't be surprised at this point, but... ever the pure of heart, she had hoped... hoped that her plea might have been heard by someone up there, hoped that Emily may have been able to do something... All she had wanted to do was save her people... but all she'd done was make it worse. She sits there in dumbfounded dread and abject horror as the reality of the situation sets in. Her Father's words echo in her ears, grating and sharp like the teeth of a parasitic worm slowly devouring her motivation. Heaven didn't listen to me, and they sure won't listen to you, either ! ... Maybe he was right... maybe they wouldn't listen, with or without proof that this could work, and she knew that it could --- but... now what can she do ? Her choices have been limited to agreeing to let the Exorcists' armies spread their genocide into other rings, or simply kill all of the sinners in the Pride ring in one fell swoop ?! True terror tightens the knot in her stomach at the very thought: Angel Dust, Husk, Cherri Bomb, Niffty, Alastor --- Rosie, the cannibals... ! She couldn't just let them die like that ! And all the while as she's agonizing, he's stuffing his face with empty carbs and reveling in her misery. Who's the devil, here ?

This... was his plan all along. He'd just been stringing her along, toying with her as he sat on the ultimatum. He'd held all the control from the beginning, hadn't he ? And there was some hidden agenda he'd been holding in his back pocket. He was getting at something... backing her into a corner with impossible choices until the only one left was whatever he was about to propose. ❝ ... What do you want, Adam ? ❞

If her little nip of a dig does anything, he doesn't show any indication of it...at first, anyway. Though by now, she's likely aware that he's not one to show all of his cards at once even if he pretends to just to exaggerate whatever rug pull he had in store later. When it came to going big or going home, he was the fattest cock in the room, after all. He'll give the cherub time to tumble on its ass on its way out while stirring the wine in his cup with a talon tip as the garish yellows of his eyes locate the tint of disdain in hers, and for a moment he could have sworn he was at dinner with his clown fucking ex wife. Well, if that indominable spirit was still kicking around her kid, it was surely watered down a degree with the push over that was her father. Not exactly the most appealing of combinations, he's not going to lie- but to step on and grind it under his heel might be cathartic.

An itch of a smirk is the only indication she gets that he heard her pop off, and after a bit more finger painting in his wine, he lifts his claws to lightly flick the wine over at her in droplets with a pope's poise in anointing brats with holy water. There's a degree of control with his aim in that it falls short of actually splashing her, the fermented drops painting the crystal table top with an array of mahogany droplets. And once his talon tips have been sufficiently dripped, he reaches over to tip the candlestick out of its holder so that it rolled the circumference of the table, flame catching the pinprick puddles of wine on fire as it went until there was a low wall of flames between them.

"And you have to make yourself useful to hell somehow. I'd say we're not so different ~ but hey, I'm not the one with the perma deaths of thousands riding on my shoulders, am I?" Well- that's the nicest way to hint she should shut her fucking mouth before a dick flies in it.

As the fire wall dwindles and she's met with the terms and conditions of the council that shone in gold lettering that one couldn't cross out as simply as she'd scribbled out his propositions and he hers, he basks in the partial panic and flailing of every drowning thought that she fails to hide and leans back comfortably in his chair once he feels the flutter of the cherub waiter returning with a notepad and pen.

"What do I want?" He mocks her with a flash of teeth that a quick swab of his tongue over cleans as if he'd finally found an appetizing solution to their negotiations. Letting the document drift down to the charred bits of table in front of her as if it were a menu itself for her to decide the fate of her realm instead of her dinner for the evening, he tilts his head towards the cherub as it hovers at the corner of his line of sight. "-looks like it's going to be the alfredo. Heavy handed on the parm. If you're not double fisting it, it's not heavy enough. And uh..." A swiveled gaze at the princess and a dismissive wave later, he adds. "One house special for my bitch, here."

Once the cherub has fluttered off again sporting the pink patches of face that accompanies being slapped in the face with carelessly returned menus, Adam rests his chin in the palm of his hand and gives his guest a disingenuous smile. "Come on ~ does it always have to be about me wanting something? Because from this angle, I'd get what I want even if I don't come to an agreement with you. So! Watcha got for me, girly? 'Cause right now, there's not a whole lot of solutions to your problem."

2023 Reading Log, pt. 3

011. In Defense of Plants by Matt Candeias. Another podcast to book, this one about plant evolution and ecology. There’s some autobiography here, about how the author’s experiences in restoration ecology gave him an appreciation for plants, and some of his own endeavors making gardens of native species. Chapters cover themes like pollination, seed dispersal, competition, carnivory and parasitism. My issue with the book is not with its content, but its production. There’s enough typos to be distracting, but worse is the approach to pictures. There are a fair amount of photos in the book, but they’re converted from color to black and white on low quality paper. I would have gladly paid a few more dollars for a book where I could tell what the figures are supposed to be.

12. The Atheist’s Bible: The Most Dangerous Book that Never Existed by Georges Minois, translated by Lys Ann Weiss. This is the biography of a book: the Treatise on the Three Imposters. This book, which argues that Moses, Jesus and Mohammed were all frauds who sought personal gain by inventing religions, did eventually exist. In fact, there’s two different versions of it. But it existed as a scandalous rumor for literally centuries before anyone bothered to write it. The author traces its origins as a weapon of papal propaganda, the history of atheist and pantheist thought in Europe as it developed from the Crusades to the Enlightenment, and provides hypotheses for the origins of both versions of Three Imposters and summaries of their contents. One of the noteworthy things about this book is that the author is not a neutral party. He is openly, aggressively, atheist, and pretty much agrees with the thesis of the Three Imposters. The book was originally written in French, and in the introduction he laments how continental Europe is still in thrall to Christendom, as opposed to the more sensibly atheist Anglosphere. I’m not sure I buy either half of that.

13. Secrets of Snakes by David A. Steen. Steen is a wildlife biologist who is active on Twitter (the dedication even uses the phrase “danger noodles” to refer to venomous snakes). And this book is a Q&A derived from his outreach efforts, teaching people that snakes are not monsters and would rather be left alone. The geographic focus of the book is the American Southeast, and copperheads and cottonmouths make up the snakes that are most discussed. The book is well written and a breezy read. The photos are high quality. There’s some good anecdotes about Steen’s career and findings, and I did learn some things, but I feel like I’m not the target audience for the book. I already like snakes, after all, and don’t think of them as monsters.

13a. Elderflora: A Modern History of Ancient Trees by Jared Farmer. Maybe I’ve been reading too many books about plants lately, because this didn’t grab me. The premise is talking about individual ancient trees, and how they are growing fewer and farther between due to agroforestry, but still have a cultural connection to people. The introduction talks a lot about how trees act as bridges between historical time and personal time. But I got maybe fifty pages in, and it didn’t really grab me. It’s not a bad book, but like I said, I’ve been reading a lot about plants lately, and this one doesn’t stand out from the pack. And I have so many other books gathering dust on my shelves that I’m more interested in. Like…

14. The Shadow Book of Ji Yun, edited and translated by Yi Izzy Yu and John Yu Branscum. Ji Yun was a bureaucrat in Qing dynasty China, whose memoirs include many tales of ghosts, psychic powers and other paranormal phenomena. This is a collection of the paranormal parts of his books, and it feels remarkably modern. Some of that is due to translation choices, I’m sure, but it takes references to servants, concubines and multiple wives to remind one sometimes that this wasn’t written in the 20th century along with books about UFOs and the Bermuda Triangle. Some of the writings are more intentionally fables, rather than being supposedly true life tales. For people looking for a good source on magical belief in China during the 18th century, or for people who are just looking for some spooky stories, this is highly recommended.

15. Orchid Muse: A History of Passion in Fifteen Flowers by Erica Hannickel. One last plant book before I put a temporary moratorium on them. I’m a sucker for “history of X in n Y” setups, I guess. What I was not expecting was for this book to approach orchids more from the horticultural perspective than from the biological perspective. Not a lot on their evolution and ecology, a lot on how to grow them at home. Each chapter profiles one or two people (occasionally a whole cultural movement) that were devoted to orchids, and the chapter ends with an infobox about how to best grow one of the orchids discussed. The book leads with its best material, talking about the quasi-erotic orchid poems of Erasmus Darwin. Some of the historical figures are people who I knew, but didn’t know about their orchid hobby, such as Frieda Kahlo and Raymond Burr. The book’s production values are lavish, which is appropriate for orchids, with high quality paper and lots of full color illustrations.

2023/08/11 - (Dolichovespula arctica ?) I've never seen a yellowjacket this color before! It has the black pattern of the common aerial yellowjacket, or of its parasite, the parasitic aerial yellowjacket.

Usually they're easy to tell apart because the common is black and yellow, while the parasitic is black and white. this guy instead had a dull base on the abdomen and a white base on the thorax and head. waiting for some insight from bugguide. has anyone on here ever seen this color?

I have had to make peace with the fact that Red, White and Royal Blue is fundamentally American Brand Hopium and therefore white liberal shit (I think that's like a prerequisite for being one of my hyperfixations. They all live in the space between trashy glamour and an irritated moral consicence, never giving me a moment's peace). But one thing Casey Mcquiston did right (apart from letting the Jewish girl and MoC dunk on T-Swift*) was making Henry walk away from the Crown in the coda. The amount of fanfiction that centers on making him and Alex have a Westminster wedding and being granted dukedoms is fucking me up. Like, it's not just one or two, it's nearly every single fic written well enough to be readable.

In the USAmerican liberal mind, having a brown man of colonized origins ascend to Royal White Gay status is somehow progressive, rather than making him also complicit in an institution that is the literal symbol of white supremacy, colonial genocide, pillaged wealth and systemic inequality. Mcquiston, for all their faults, at least recognised that the wealth of empire is a blood-soaked thing, and to partake of it makes you complicit in its sins. Literally that's one of the first things that sets Henry apart from his family, and gets Alex's attention. The fandom otoh, hasn't gotten the memo. Or maybe not having to live the reality of colonial violence and trauma gives them the privilege of escaping the moral implications of British royalty. I know that the US's Overton window is fucked beyond all hope, but what passes for the leftist solidarity among white queers is a tragedy. No wonder every Black person or PoC over there is fucked up in some way.

As you can see with Meghan Markle, bringing BIPOC into violently oppressive, white supremacist institutions isn't a win for their communities, it's feeding them alive into maw of the beast for liberal tokenism. The virulent racism is a fucking foundational feature, not a bug. I'm not faulting her for marrying the man she loved, and they don't deserve any of the horrible shit the RF has been putting them through, but in a purely political context, her joining the RF was a betrayal of her fellow colonized. And the fact that they refuse to relinquish their titles, even after everything, tells us that they're still not in solidarity with everyone else this parasitic, anti-democratic relic institution has fucked over. But apparently that's peak fantasy for USAmerican and white queers.

This is why I don't fuck with fandom outside of AO3 anymore. It's always the same. Whites and the West just don't have any actual leftist values, or if they do, they're purely cosmetic. there's a world where the stars are the main source of power. the whole existence of this world is dependent on stars, as it slowly takes their celestial power to keep itself from dying. without the light of stars everything would collapse in mere seconds.

there's 3 main types of stars: pure (white, purple, blue), regular (yellow, orange, bright red) and defective / corrupted stars (black, dark red. pink, green).

all stars at some point become corrupted. it happens because of stars not having enough power to keep themselves stable.

Starborn - as the name suggests, the are born from stars. specific ways in which that can happen  are: core of a supernova taking form or multiple stars that collided taking form.

- Naturally have a LOT of celestial power.

- mortal, but can live up to trillions of years

Star Catchers:

- Created by ‘the perfect one’ who infused some of his power into a little tribe of creatures he had found. Since then he was considered and worshiped as a god by Star Catchers.

- have a class system which determines a star catcher's role in society based on their skills and knowledge. those being: Purifiers (main work-force, more physically capable than others, are in charge of purifying stars.) , Healers (care-takers of the city theyre located in.) and Prophets (sorta like priests. rule over and educate other star catchers).

- live up to 200-300 years on average.

Hoshi:

-Hoshi is a cosmic parasite + partially Starborn, that formed from a bunch of defective stars colliding and taking form. 

-Came to be during the massacre of Star Catchers

- about 500 years old

- 185cm / 6ft tall

- quite the cheeky fella loving to make snarky remarks about people he sees.

- has a god complex

- corrupted and consumed big amounts of stars, destroyed a few planets (2 of those having living beings on them and 1 having a whole civilization. the one with the civilization was destroyed by... this guy making a cult for himself. he got the gullible inhabitants to see him as a god and then made then made his followers catch and corrupt weaker stars (as they have no celestial power and so no purpose for him) for him eventually leading to the planet getting completely obliterated. And you know why he did that? for fun.), injured both SC and Suno multiple times when trying to get Suno because he’s Starborn.

- Used to have a name, but it became obsolete after she became the only one of her kind left.

- Was granted immortality by ‘the perfect one’.

- before the massacre used to have a husband and a son. both are dead now.

- possibly has PTSD from the events of the massacre.

- 648 years old.
