Granola Bites
Basically I told my sister late one night that I wanted a snack and all I could remember about them was 'granola bites'
She decided that this sounded like a story about a crunchy vampire.
And then I short story about one.
____________________________________________________________
WC: 2,405
Day-In-The-Life narrative.
tw: mentions of blood (in packets)
Summary: Trevor's a pretty normal guy that's decided to live a crunchy lifestyle; home garden, vegetarian, makes his own meals, a little stall at the local outdoor market, a book that he's working on and a complimentary blog. Oh. And he's a vampire.
Sunlight. It streamed over the land and covered the garden, stretching its fingers over the small cabin-like house in the middle of the suburbs. The golden fingers slipped through the closed shutters, over the couch, and began flicking at my nose. I woke up with a thunderous sneeze that catapulted me to the floor, and found myself struggling with an oddly-confining jacket under the redwood table. After a moment of sleep-deprived panic, I won the confrontation and peeked around at the clock pressed against the wall.
Shoot. It was a bit past feeding time.
I wormed my way to a standing position, left the villainous outerwear to sulk on the floor until tomorrow morning, and made my way out to the garden.
The green plants celebrated the sun, and I joined them for a moment. The sun was warm on my skin as I stood, breathing in the morning air before going about my day. The bell peppers were finally ready, the tomatoes juicy red, and the ears of corn seemed to wave like volunteers for harvest. Gathering them into small bundles, I brought them into the kitchen to rest and went out for a second round. Going straight to the back of my garden, I took a moment to talk to my beanstalks, admired them for their growth and thanked them for their contribution. Then I knelt and began to dig them up by the roots.
Escorting the bundles back into my kitchen -- and trying to ignore the giant dirty boot prints smearing dark mud across the linoleum tile -- I set to stripping the roots from each beanstalk, cleaning all my products, and getting them ready for both farmer’s markets I was to attend later in the day. Hunger began to set in as I worked, so I grabbed a couple of spare roots I kept in the freezer and began to chow down.
Ugh, the taste wasn’t exactly what I wanted. Metallic yet smooth, with a tiny bit of sweetness as an aftertaste. I needed something to drown it with. Another trip to the fridge produced a large cup full of green chalky liquid, and I downed it in just a few gulps. Sweet, sweet chlorophyll. The smooth taste was welcome after the metallic hemoglobin, and it went down easily thanks to the coconut water mixed in. The pairing of chlorophyll and coconut water was a great substitute for blood.
Oh, right. I’ve been living with it so long, I often forget not everyone knows about us.
Hi. The name’s Trevor. I’m a chlorophyre which, at its core, is a ‘vampire’ that lives on chlorophyll instead of hemoglobin. I used to be a vampire, but ever since I found out there were other, healthier ways of living, I decided to take a more natural approach to life.
I finished cleaning the greens, packaged them in little baskets, and stacked them in brown paper bags which then made it into my Hybrid car. I took the few veggies and beans to my stall out at the local farmers market and set up shop.
The humans were nice, as usual. A good number of lookie-loos, a handful of loyal buyers, and I even managed to convince one or two new faces to buy a basket of beans. It was a long day, made even longer with the knowledge I had committed to this booth for the next two days as well. I may have technically been a member of the ‘un-dead’ but that didn’t mean I enjoyed derelict houses or used familiars to do my work for me. The weekends at the farmer’s market helped pay my bills.
When time was up, I began cleaning my booth and storing things away while my neighbors did the same. We swapped stories about harvesting, soil prep, and the latest news on governmental damage in relation to agriculture and the environment. We traded farewells, knowing we’d see each other the next morning, packed the last of our unsold wares into our cars and drove off.
I made sure my veggies were safely stored away at home before going about my day; buying new seeds, working home-made compost into my soil, looking up the latest in natural pesticides. I couldn’t take too long, as I only had a few hours between markets. My second booth was scheduled to be set up right after sundown, and by the time I finished my daily chores, the sun was starting to drop below the horizon. I had to hurry.
I gathered up all the leaves and stalks of my plants and worked them, getting out all the chlorophyll I could manage and dividing the results between green-tinted eight ounce glass bottles. Then I removed the fresh root clusters from the fridge and bundled them, the fraying hemp rope scratching at my fingers. The cabinets above the sink held generous supplies of coconut water, which I removed and mixed with half of the chlorophyll bottles. Gotta create a good example of each product, after all.
The last step was to make sure all my pamphlets were in order, each one printed on eco-friendly paper with biodegradable ink. They contained information regarding a plant-based alternative to blood, and explained it in more detail than I could manage in the short time I was at my booth. It was definitely better than it sounded, but most vampires wouldn’t understand why green was better if it wasn’t explained properly. I had my work cut out for me, to be sure, but I deeply believed in chlorophyrism and wanted to get the word out to as many as I could.
Packing up my nightly wares, I got back in my Hybrid and took off for the Night-Market, a farmer’s market for nocturnal-based creatures. Parking in my regular spot, I gathered my things and began down the secret forest trail leading to the bridge where the market was held. Apparently, even under the cover of darkness, our gatherings must be veiled in secrecy and subterfuge.
I set up shop like normal, putting out my pamphlets and products and ignoring the jokes at my expense. I’d been doing this long enough to know responding in kind got me nowhere. The other vendors knew my product and knew where I stood on the matter, and so long as they didn’t upturn my booth or break my stuff, I wouldn’t burn their coffins in the middle of the day.
Instead of sinking to their level, I waved to the werewolf across the bridge selling distilled Wolfsbane pills. Apparently she had managed to figure out a formula able to reverse the werewolf curse for a limited time. I’d never seen it work in person, but she had plenty of regulars. The she-wolf must have been doing something right.
The market opened. Night-creatures began to pour in from all sides. Blood-suckers bought packets from the vampire vendors. The she-wolf’s regulars padded in, panting for her antidote. There were bottled nightmares, brain samples, animal parts, and a couple of the booths even sold ‘deals’. I was never quite sure what ‘deals’ were sold, but I didn’t try to find out.
A couple of curious vampires stopped by my booth. “What’s up with this?” one of them asked while sucking on a sample packet. “Is this a joke?”
The other one leaned in and whispered, “Vampire-hippie. Walk away slowly.”
“It’s nothing like that,” I said with a forced smile, sliding one of the pamphlets across to them. “Vampirism has its place in the world, I guess, but have you ever wondered if there was a better way?”
One of them looked like she couldn’t care less, but the other peered at the pamphlet and seemed to be listening.
“I mean, sure: drinking the blood of others has sustained us for a good long while. I’m not saying it hasn’t. But the world was...different back then. Less chemicals in the blood, less preservatives in the food.” I gestured towards the shrinking blood sample, which was now leaking in the corner. “Do you know how much more monoxide is in human blood these days thanks to burning gasoline and oil, as opposed to 100 years ago?”
The packet-drinker shrugged. “Nope. But if that’s true, why not just drink animal blood?”
“They’re inhaling the same air, for one thing,” I stated. “But if we all switched to drinking animals, do you know how badly that would impact the environment? It would take years to breed enough animals for them to be a sustainable alternative for all of our kind...not to mention there’d be competition from all sides.” In answer to the sarcastically-quirked eyebrow, I gestured around to a few of the other booths. “Vampires aren’t the only ones that feed on animals.”
The one reading the pamphlet finally spoke up. “So how is this any different?” she asked. “What’s the catch?”
“Ah, that’s the best thing,” I said, holding up a small glass bottle. “There is no catch. Drinking from plants instead of people is a much more sustainable alternative; you can grow your own food, so you don’t have to worry about things like cameras and cell phones tracking your movements. There’s more than enough soil to use, either out in a garden or in a potted plant, and you don’t have to worry about soil erosion so long as you rotate and feed the plants properly. And best of all, you know exactly what’s going into your food: because you’re putting it there.” I gestured to the ever-shrinking blood packet. “Do you have any idea what kind of life your food was living? How much blood-poisoning might have happened?” I looked back to the other one. “Using plants, you don’t ever have to worry about it again.”
The two glanced at each other. The blood-sucker shrugged her shoulders. “It’s not like I’d catch any of their diseases. Plus, this sounds like a lot more work.”
But the other one had picked up a bottle and was looking it over. “It’s not any more work than hunting down human prey in this digital age,” I said. “Plus, the switch is easier than ever with our root bundles.”
The blood-sucker was looking away, her packet nearly empty. She was clearly debating if she wanted to go back to the vendor a few booths down and purchase a couple packs for the fridge. But the other one looked up at me. “Root bundles?”
I nodded. “Did you know that the legume plant has nodules that produce the exact same substance as blood?” She peered at the bundle of roots, fingering one of the small gnarled ends. I could see she was interested, but unsure what her companion would say. I nudged her a little more and told her that the movement I was a part of had a small online presence. If she wanted to give me her general whereabouts or territory, I could have a representative stop by and give her more information. She shrugged and wasn’t sure, so I suggested she take my card and come back the next night to take another look at the nodules. I offered her a small sample root bundle as compensation for her listening ear, and as a little something to snack on when she had the time.
She seemed grateful for the offer and accepted, slipping the small bundle into her coat along with my card before spinning around to join her companion. They loudly mocked the chlorophyre movement as they left, and I later spied the two buying a generous supply of packets from the vampire two booths down.
I didn’t mind. I may not have gotten a chance to tell them about the side-effects, how drinking chlorophyll was like drinking a natural sunscreen, how it converted sunlight into energy like the plants, but that was something I saved for customers showing a genuine interest. Vampires generally don’t believe that part of the deal, and I can’t blame them. The first chlorophyre I saw was met with equal cynicism, and I didn’t believe the movement until I tried it for myself. Anyway, it isn’t easy to make the switch from ‘acceptable’ to healthy, especially when clan pressure is involved. Said pressure is one of the reasons I now lived on my own.
A few more vampires came over during the night. A few more mocked my products openly or over their shoulders. Another couple passed by and stopped, familiar faces that wanted to purchase another bundle and learn more about growing their own. We talked while I gathered their order, and I found out that they prowled an alley a couple streets down from where I lived. With a smile, I offered them to stay at my place for a bit. They could learn more about growing their own food, and my house was definitely safer than the streets.
Soon the sun was on its way up, and all the booths were dismantled. I packed up what I had left and headed to my Hybrid, wondering if that couple had made their way to my house yet. I wondered if the two vampiresses from earlier in the night would come back. I loved talking to an open mind, something startling hard to find in the underworld. I got behind the wheel and drove, wondering once again what the she-wolf’s Wolfbane pills actually did for werewolves, or why they’d take an antidote in the first place.
I got back home and brought everything inside. I grabbed from my personal stash of chlorophyll, drinking it down as I laid out on the couch and enjoyed the slight tinge of rum added to the mix. It may not have had the same effect on me as it once did, but the flavor was still a nice addition. I stared at the ceiling, the full moon making silver tracks through the darkness, and contemplated the night. There was still some gardening I could do, but there was also online marketing to work on, a seminar on Essential Oils to watch, and more information to gather for the book I was planning on self-publishing later this year. One of the added benefits to being a healthy chlorophyre meant working in the day and the night, as my body no longer required sleep to function. I stared at the ceiling, sipped my drink, and wondered which of my projects to work on next.

D&D Tarot Deck Review
So, I got the D&D Tarot Deck for Christmas. It was a total surprise gift from folks I was once very close to -- now, my partner sees them occasionally, and I don't see them at all (by choice). It's still incredibly thoughtful, and I'd been planning on getting it as a gift for myself. It definitely has its pros and cons, so I figured I'd do a quick* write-up since I'm pretty excited to have this deck.
*Or not so quick, apparently. Details beneath the cut for length!
The Packaging
The first thing I judge in a deck is how it's packaged. This one's box is not bad! The art on the box itself is nice, reflecting the cards within. On the back is the description of the deck and the barcode. It's all one piece, opening with a hinge lid like a book. Rather than printing onto the box itself, they've got a sort of sticker cover that's already cracking and peeling after opening it less than ten times. Not ideal; it's going to destroy itself pretty quickly.
Using the Hierophant card as the cover is a nice touch, though.
The inside is simple. Gold-yellow paper lines the inner cover and deck slot. I really like the color scheme, black and yellow/gold -- mostly because yellow is my favorite color. The rectangular slot for the cards is just deep enough to fit the cards. The booklet fits perfectly atop them. With the book over top, they fit snugly, but any amount of turning or strong jostling lets the topmost cards go free within the box. It does have a ribbon attached for easy removal, but that's standard.
In all, the packaging is standard, leaning on the less-robust side. It's a mass-market deck aimed toward D&D collectors, not tarot collectors. Lucky for them, I'm both, so I don't mind too much... Especially when the deck's art is so nice.
The Booklet
Before I dive into the deck itself, let's have a look at the booklet. It is... wow, thin. Wafer thin. How do they fit so much information in such a little space?
Well... they don't. This booklet is exceptionally beginner unfriendly. Not a big problem for me, but damn. If this is someone's first deck, coming from the world of D&D with no experience in tarot, it would be rough to rely on this booklet for any assistance whatsoever.
The booklet does display a picture of each card with its description, making pairing explanations to the card easy enough. But the descriptions are a short sentence or two each, and... well, frankly, I don't agree with several of them. In particular, the Sun card is depicted as a knight with a flaming sword before the sun's glow... and the booklet describes it as "Returning to the innocence and vitality of childhood." It's incongruent at best.
It's worth noting that the two people credited with creating the deck and guide book are not tarot readers. Or, at least, they aren't listed as such in their credentials. I can forgive the meagerness of the booklet on the grounds that this deck is not truly intended for beginners.
It also isn't necessarily meant for divination. Sure, at the start of the booklet, it explains what tarot is and how to use a tarot spread to do divination. It frames it as a tool for growth and guidance, which I'm a fan of. It does also say that tarot is "ancient," which... I'm not going to get into here. It isn't ancient, but it does sound dramatic and very D&D-ish when put that way.
The booklet gives a short example of a "good" and "bad" question -- "Why am I always sad?" (bad) vs. "How do I bring more joy to my life?" (better). This is great! It also explains that the short descriptions are short on purpose (though I do think it's very much to save space also) to force the reader to interpret the symbolism on each. Again, not necessarily super beginner-friendly. But it is useful to set a book aside and learn to read on sight. So this deck might be good for next-level beginners -- ones looking to step away from traditional meanings and create their own.
There are a couple spreads on offer in the booklet, standard one- and three-card draws. But there's also a unique spread of five cards fashioned after the shape of a D&D adventure that I definitely think I'll be using in paid readings: The Quest, The Conscious, The Unconscious, The Boon or Bogey, and the Quest's End. Very nice.
My favorite part is this, though: The booklet also explains how you can use the deck to build a D&D encounter, which... holy shit, that's cool. Draw a hand of three and, using the second half of each card's description, fashion an adventure. I will 100% be using it this way.
I think it would be fun to replace the Deck of Many things with this tarot deck in a game. Let the players draw a card to alter their fate one way or another. For better or worse, the cards will decide...
Super fucking cool.
The Cards
Now, the good stuff. The cards.
Tumblr media
In this deck, the classic Cups, Swords, Wands, and Pentacles have been replaced with D&D-themed suits. They're designed after four of the six main attributes of any D&D character: Charisma, Wisdom, Intelligence, and Strength.
Now, I was a little surprised they chose Strength instead of Constitution or Dexterity, since in the Major Arcana cards, they didn't change the Strength card. It's still there. So you have Strength the Card and Strength the Minor Suit. It strikes me as a missed opportunity. I think that either the Major card should've been changed to Constitution, or the Minor Suit should've been Dexterity.
The suits still follow the pattern of Ace through Ten followed by Page, Knight, Queen, and King. So, it isn't so far removed from a more "classic" deck.
Either way, the cards themselves are... well, damn. They're really pretty. The art style reminds me strongly of modern D&D books, and I suppose that's on purpose. It creates a cohesive brand across the board, but the style also really suits tarot.
The details are amazing. Even if the creators aren't tarot readers or deck designers themselves, I can tell that a lot of research and thought went into each card. Throughout the Major Arcana, you can spot various canon D&D characters (Mordenkainen being the Magician is most notable, though Tiamat burning down a castle as the Tower is so fucking good), and they all fit the card they've been assigned.
Sorting through the deck and writing my personal descriptions as I always do, I can suddenly understand why the descriptions are so short. There's so much on every card. The symbolism is easy to read, clear and fabulous throughout the deck.
And really, replacing the suits was the best choice they made overall. Not only does it fit the D&D theme, but it also stretches the imagination. I tried to fit the D&D suits into the classic suits, but it doesn't really fit. Intelligence might be Wands... but the Five shows a vase, which is definitely more Cups-like... though it is conflict, which is very much Wands... or perhaps Swords...
And so on. The unique suits lend a new depth to the deck. Unfamiliar and familiar all at once, D&D players and tarot readers alike will recognize the symbols on each card. Characters, classes, cursed items, famous weapons, beloved monsters, familiar themes, evocative expressions and colors and posing -- honestly, it's a good fucking deck.
Tumblr media
Which is why the only drawback I personally have is the god damn cardstock. Bad cardstock is a deck killer. And holy shit does this paper suck. The texture is fine -- a lightly pebbled surface that's pleasing to the touch. But they're so thin. So thin, in fact, that a slight bend warps them badly. I made the mistake of doing a riffle shuffle right out of the box, and now they're permanently bent, just enough to make it obvious.
The cards shuffle nicely. They do feel a bit like I'm shuffling cards I printed myself on slightly thicker than usual paper. I'm afraid to shuffle them more aggressively in case I bend one entirely in half on accident, which isn't ideal.
It was obviously chosen to save money on the printing. It's a shame. Thicker or more quality cardstock would have made this my #1 deck, I think. Once again, I don't think this was made for tarot readers. It was made for D&D nerds and collectors who just might have an interest in tarot or divination. Or a fun addition to their games. Or something pretty to put on their shelves.
A Quick Explanation of the New Suits
In my own words, bolstered by what's described in the booklet.
Strength:
This entire suit is really similar to the Major Arcana Strength card. It can be about physical abilities, but it can also refer to inner strength, passion, and resolve. The individual cards feature a surprising lack of weaponry. There's a solid focus on making progress, weathering difficulties, and sharing what you have with others. Strength of heart and will, not just of body.
Intelligence:
In short, mental powers and ability. This suit is about gathering and using knowledge to advantage. The booklet also says that this suit is about the way our minds shape our reality and how our perceptions weave a story. These cards have a strong focus on the mind, predictably. Learning, thinking, logic, choice, and planning feature prominently throughout this suit.
Wisdom:
The perception of one's own inner world. Not just knowing, but understanding. This is the suit of intuition and insight. The cards have an emphasis on friendship, connection, healing, and faith. There are also themes of balance and having compassion with yourself. Also, one of the D&D prompts is "A duck waddles up and says that he has witnessed a murder and wants you to catch the culprit." Which fucking rules.
Charisma:
The suit of confidence and charm. Like the D&D attribute, this suit focuses on beauty, relationships, and interpersonal interactions. The cards themselves are surprisingly diverse. There's a strong emphasis on the strength of character and recognizing who you are. These cards focus a lot on being content and honest with yourself and with others.
Will I Use the Deck?
I mean, yeah. Fuck yeah. Shitty cardstock aside, it's a beautiful deck that calls to the TTRPG nerd at my core. I can't wait to do some readings with it (this Free Tarot Friday might all be D&D deck, tbh). Beyond that, I already have ideas for incorporating it into my D&D games.
Like the Alleyman's Tarot, I don't think I'll be reading reversals with this deck. It doesn't quite feel right for a reason I can't put my finger on. Maybe it's because the messages are diverse enough and far enough away from the "classic" Rider-Waite-Smith designs.
Overall Rating
In total, I'd give this deck a solid 8/10. The cardstock and package quality definitely docked several points, but the beautiful art and interesting Minor Arcana choices make up for it. Once again, I wouldn't recommend this for total beginners if you're using it for divination, but as a second or third deck, I think it's fine. D&D nerds and experienced tarot readers will find this to be a gem in our collections.
And hey! If you like my work, consider dropping a dollar in my tip jar. Contributions help me keep making posts like this one!

Do Finns work long enough hours? Finance Minister Riikka Purra (Finns) is posing the difficult questions in a Maaseudun Tulevaisuus column on Monday that was also picked up by Iltalehti.
The minister noted that Finns' average working week was shorter than in similar countries.
The minister had a long list of problems with the Finnish economy, including low birth rates, poor productivity growth, deficits in the state finances and declining Pisa scores.
She suggested that young people with poor skills were more likely to live on social benefits than enter the labour market, another problem for the national economy.
Trade balances are in surplus only in primary and intermediate products, with Finland struggling to sell more higher-value products abroad.
The only hope, according to Purra in a column that is frankly quite short of it, is reforming the economy in line with the package of measures put forward by the government.
She claims the package of measures — which radically cut spending and have provoked large-scale strikes in protest — is pretty basic, not radical.
The idea of a cross-party consensus on economic reforms, agreed to last over several parliamentary terms, was floated by President Sauli Niinistö in his New Year speech.
Purra's bleak text assessing the Finnish economy could be read in that context, as the scene it sets is uncompromising and the solutions it proposes are fairly unpalatable to many of her political opponents.
Nuclear turnoff
Recent peaks in electricity prices have caused some in Finland to wonder if nuclear power might be a possible solution to fluctuations in the power market.
Many Finns are now on spot price electricity contracts, so their bills are linked to the cost charged on electricity markets which changes by the hour and briefly rose over two euros per kilowatt hour recently.
The minister responsible, Kai Mykkänen (NCP), has said that Finland is considering new nuclear plants to try and deal with the problem.
That would be economically problematic, according to a professor interviewed by Helsingin Sanomat.
Esa Vakkilainen said that the plant would reduce prices so much in the summer that some of the plants would have to shut down in the warmer months due to the reduced demand and the high level of wind and solar capacity available.
That would mean the nuclear plant would need public subsidies, as a new project would not be financially viable for private investors. While not impossible, that would be a new situation for Finland which has long insisted nuclear projects should be privately funded.
Parents not friends
Ilta-Sanomat carries a long feature on "buddy parenting" based on an interview with researcher and Steiner school headteacher Jarno Paalasmaa.
His new book is out on Wednesday, and it deals with the phenomenon of parents who would rather be their children's friends than set proper boundaries.
Some modern parents have a tendency to give in when there is a disagreement with their children, without insisting that they meet certain basic standards.
This is known as "buddy parenting" and it can be detrimental to a child's development and ability to deal with the world outside the home.
Schools are now having to teach some children about rules and boundaries, because the concept is not as familiar as it used to be — thanks in part to buddy parents.
The article has a helpful fact box for anyone struggling with the issue. It suggests parents do not compromise on taking medicine when sick, brushing teeth twice a day, eating at the table at meal times, dressing warmly in winter, going to school even when tired, evening routines and sleeping rhythms, and zero tolerance for insulting language.
