Flora and Sylva
To celebrate Arbor Day, we present these exquisite hand-colored lithographic plates of flowering trees from another important set donated to us by Lynde Bradley Uihlein -- the 1865 edition of François André Michaux’s landmark work, The North American Sylva, in five volumes including Thomas Nuttall’s 2-volume continuation, published in Philadelphia by Rice, Rutter & Co. The entire set includes 277 hand-colored plates, many by the Belgian painter and botanist Pierre-Joseph Redouté and the French naturalist artist Pancrace Bessa.
First published in French in 1810 and translated into English in 1817, Michaux’s Sylva was the result of ten years of research in North America, and included 156 plates. The continuation by the noted American botanist and ornithologist Thomas Nutall was first published from 1842 to 1849, and added another 121 hand-colored plates.
We also hold the 1857-59 Michaux/Nuttall in five volumes, published in Philadelphia by Rice & A. N. Hart.
