Connect to Spirituality Amid Wilderness at Mangala Devi Temple
The Mangala Devi Kannagi Temple is a 1000 years old, ruined granite stone temple standing upright at an altitude of 1337 metres above sea level. The temple was built in reverence to Mangala Devi, also known as Kannaki and beholds a significant historical significance. The temple is located in the forest of Periyar Tiger Reserve and is among the top tourist attractions in Thekkady. Since its inception, the deity of Kannaki has been a symbol of moral power, which is present in every ordinary woman. The legend behind the temple says that Kannaki burnt the entire town of Madurai with a curse after learning that her husband was punished and killed because of wrong allegations of theft in the royal court. Kannaki went to the forests of Periyar after burning down Madurai.
The tale of Kannaki has been immortalised by the famous poet-prince Ilanko Adikal in his Tamil epic Silapathikaram, one of the five epics in Tamil literature.
The Architecture of Mangala Devi Temple
The construction of the temple bears a resemblance to that of Pandyan architecture. There is no concrete record of the time of construction of the temple. However, it is believed that it was initiated by Chera Ruler Chenkuttuvan. Locals also believe that Gajabahuka Gamani, the Lankan King and other prominent personalities of the time attended the ceremony of the idol installation.
At present, the temple is in a ramshackle state but the steps leading to the temple and the boundary walls are still upstanding to manifest the glory of the bygone era. A visit to the location of the temple tickles the tourists’ minds with a question mark about how the huge stones and granites had been brought to such an altitude in those days. The archaic temple complex of Mangala Devi constitutes of four stone structures that encompass the deities of other Gods such as Lord Shiva, Lord Ganapathy and Karuppa Swamy. Also, there are several structures carved on the stone walls of the temple complex.
Another striking fact is that there is a secret underground pathway that the locals believe is a passage that connects to either Meenakshi Temple or the palace of the Pandya King.
Festival at Mangala Devi Temple
Unlike the other temples of Kerala, Mangala Devi Temple is not open to tourists and devotees around the year. The common public can only enter the temple on the full moon night during the occasion of Chithra Pournami celebrated between April and May. The deity of Mangala Devi is brought from Kambam during the temple festival due to the ruined state of the temple. The idol is made up of Panchaloha (5 metals).
The main deity of Goddess Kannaki is adorned with silk and flowers and prayers and oblations are offered during the daytime. Women cook and offer pongala to the deity on the occasion and seek blessings.
Since the temple is located in the forest area of Periyar National Park you need to get prior permission from the forest officials to visit the place. The 12km long way to the temple is covered by a jeep and en route through the dense foliage and grasslands, you can also catch views of Nilgiri Tahr and other species of fauna and flora.

The largest panchaloha murti of Shri Natarajar is 23 feet in height and weighs 15 tonnes. It was installed at Thimmakudi village near Swamimalai in Thanjavur on Monday, 12th Sept 2022.
Varad Rajh, proprietor of Cast in Bronze Creative studio at Thimmakudi village, built the 11-foot Nataraja idol that now resides at CERN, Switzerland in 2003.
He planned to make the tallest idol (23 ft) of Natrajar and install it at Thimmakudi and sought permission from the Centre. Though the work for the tallest idol started in 2010, it had to be stopped due to financial crunch. In 2012, the work resumed with the support of Vellore Sri Sakthi Amma Narayani Peedam and the process went on for 10 years.
He completed the murti and after puja by the Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, handed it over to the Vellore Sri Sakthi Amma Narayani Peedam Trustee Suresh Babu.

Goddess Tamilt-Tay ~ 1930′s ~ J.R. Geigy, Indian artist, biography not found
Enjoying this image I wanted to know more about the goddess and found this: “ThamizhthThaai, (Tamiḻ Tāy, Thamizh Thaai) denotes the deified personification of the Tamil language as a mother. This deification of Tamil language in the persona of a mother got established during the Tamil renaissance movement of the later half of the nineteenth century.
The goddess of Tamil Thai has been depicted variously in different media. Since the coinage of the concept and terminology of Tamil Thai by Manonmaniam Sundaram Pillai, the persona of Tamil Thai has been presented in a variety of ways in the print media via books, posters, paintings, in textbook illustrations, advertisements and cartoons. Statues of Tamil Thai have been imagined and sculpted in several different forms. For example, in 1940, as directed by Ganesan, Vaidyanatha Stapathi created a panchaloha idol of Tamil Thai depicting Tamil Thai as seated on a globe to indicate the geographical spread of Tamil. In this statue, Tamil Thai holds in her hands palm leaf manuscripts, a japa mala, the torch of knowledge and a Sengottu yazh. The statue installed to commemorate the Fifth International Tamil Conference, Madurai, 1981, depicts Tamil Thai in a seated position sitting on a lotus flower with one hand in the abhayamudra. A nearly identical statue has been installed as the main idol in the Tamil Thai Temple in Karaikudi.” ~Wikipedia

. . Panchaloha = Pancha + Uloga which literally translates 'Five Metals', The idols made in the last 100+ years have the following 5 major metal constituents in the following ratios... Copper 84% Zinc 11% Lead 4% Tin 1% Silver Traces % Gold Traces % . The copper hued variants of Panchalogha is made with high ratios of copper to make them strong lasting for generations use, they usually have a pinkish red hue, Apart from these the golden hued Panchalogha idols are the favourite of many as they can be polished to a shiny golden colour, However even today the idols made exclusively for temple installation and worship, strictly follow the old tradition of Silpa sastra incorporating more proportions of gold & silver in the metal mix., imparting a golden aura and glow to the finished idol... . The Panchalogha idol making was mastered & perfected during the Chola era where the master crafters patronized by the Cholas, the reason for the high value of Chola Icons lies in the metal constituent, where the amalgam incorporated high proportion of Gold & Silver, which not only made them more malleable & easy to make intricated carving, detailed features but also the major reason for the everlasting Shine & finish, which stands against the test of time, making the Chola Iconography the best in the world . . Tamil Nadu idol wing CID led by Superintendent of Police R Sakthivel on Wednesday recovered 74 antique idols from the house of a French national in Puducherry.
The seizure was made based on credible information on the network and after obtaining a warrant to search from Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Kumbakonam Vijaykumar, Sakthivel told The New Indian Express.
The ancestral house on Romain Rolland Street (opposite to the Department of Art and Culture) was searched in the presence of the owner Jean Paul Rajarathinam and the idols were recovered. Among them were 14 sculpted in stone and the remaining in metal worth several crores, said Sakthivel, adding that some of them would be panchaloha idols. These idols dating back to the Chola period are likely to have been stolen from temples across Tamil Nadu, he said.
Rajarathinam told police that the idols were in possession of the family since the time of his grandfather. Police are not buying that story. There has been no arrest of anyone in connection with the seizure in Puducherry, said Sakthivel.

Om Aim Saraswathyai Nama : MOOGAMBIKA DEVI OF KOLLUR
Mookambika temple is an ancient temple located at Kollur in Karnataka. Kollur is a tiny hamlet in southern Karnataka lying on the banks of Sowparnika. It is here, in the lap of the Kudajadri hills that Mookambika/Moogambika, the goddess of vidya, resides. The Great trinity and the Parasakti together create the unified energy field of this temple.
RELIGIOUS SIGNIFICANCE :
The Mookambika Devi Temple of Kollur, dedicated to Mookambika Devi, is one of the most prominent shrines for people in the state of Karnataka and Kerala, India. the picturesque surroundings presented by the banks of the river Sauparnika and the lush green Kodachadri hill, the temple attracts millions of pilgrims every year. The temple holds immense relevance for the devotees as it is associated with revered Hindu saint and Vedic scholar Adi Shankaracharya. It is believed that Adi Shankara perceived the idea of having a Mookambika Devi temple at Kollur and himself installed the idol of deity in the temple some 1200 years ago.
MOOKAMBIKA/MOOGAMBIKA DEVI is regarded as a manifestation of Shakti, Saraswathi and Mahalakshmi and is the primary deity of worship in this temple. In fact the Temple of Mookambika Devi is one of the 'Seven Muktisthala' pilgrimage sites in Karnataka which are Kollur, Udupi, Subrahmanya, Kumbashi, Koteshwara, Shankaranarayana and Gokarna. The Mookambika Devi Temple stands at the bottom of the Kodachadri peak. The deity is in the form of Jyotir-Linga incorporating both Shiva and Shakthi. The Panchaloha image (five element mixed metal) of the Goddess on Shree Chakra is stated to have been consecrated by Adi Shankaracharya during his visit to this place. It is believed that the original place of the goddess is on top of Kodachadri Peak (3880') and as it was very difficult for ordinary people to trek all the way to Kodachadri, Shankaracharya reestablished the temple at Kollur.

History Of Kollur Mookambika Temple, Karnataka
The history of Kollur Mookambika temple states that there lived a demon named Kaumasura who was unleashing a reign of terror upon all the gods with his special power given by Lord Shiva.
When all the gods were trying their best to stay away from his vicinity, Guru Shukracharya brings good news to the gods that this demon would face death by a woman, that is Parvathi Devi. Knowing this Kaumasura undertakes severe penance .Lord Shiva pleased with his penance asked this demon to ask for the boon.Sensing grave danger if he his offered the boon, this goddess of speech makes this demon dumb.
Hence this demon Kaumasura came to be known as Mookasura (mooka means to be dumb). Thereafter the Devi mobilised all the powers of the gods and then this demon was killed by Kollur Devi Parvathi. She was hence forth called Mookambikai. This place where Devi killed Mookasura is known as Marana Katte.
The Kollur Devi thereafter became the deity of this place offering her blessings to all who sought her. She poses with all her radiance along with the shank and chakra in both her hands sitting in the padmahasana posture.
This temple has been patronized by many ancient kings who donated many precious jewels to Sri Kollur Devi and they are still adorned by her. Many other hindu kings have also donated to this temple since it was believed to be the state temple in those days. The temple is said to be one of the richest and most ancient temples in India. Some of the most famous rituals performed here are - child naming ceremony and Aakshara byasam (initiation of education of the child ) is done here
