Also can we petition the Paley Institute to do one of their reunions for Our Flag Means Death?
I would just love to see the cast and crew get to talk together about this phenomenal show!

TV on TV!
Part 2 ~ The TV Shows of the Lucyverse
Tumblr media
Although it may seem redundant, the worlds created by Lucille Ball on radio and television frequently created and mentioned other TV shows!  Here are a few from “The Lucy Show” (1962-1968).
Tumblr media
“Lucy Puts Up a TV Antenna” (1962)
When Lucy's TV set doesn't work, she discovers that the antenna has blown off the roof. Refusing to spend extra money to have one professionally installed, she talks Viv into helping her replace it. As the episode opens, Sherman and Jerry are excited that the All-American Football Team is going to be on TV. When the reception is poor, Lucy engages in the old practice of  banging on the side of the set, something she claims she learned from her late husband.
LUCY: “What did we do before television?”  VIV: “We used to hit the radio.”
Tumblr media
With Lucy on the roof, Viv yells up the chimney, “I got carried away watching Art Linkletter. Come on down Lucy. He's about to go through a lady's purse.”  “The Linkletter Show” (also known as “Art Linkletter's House Party”) was seen on CBS from 1952 to 1970. Lucille Ball appeared on the show in February 1965.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Viv Put in a Shower” (1963)
“Where’s Lloyd Bridges when you need him?” ~ Lucy Carmichael
Bridges starred “Sea Hunt” from 1958 to 1961, a series about a scuba diver which featured extensive underwater filming, so much so that his name become synonymous with underwater adventures. Bridges was seen in all 155 episodes of the CBS series. He was also mentioned in the same context in “Lucy Buys a Boat” (1963). Lucy says she bought the boat with the hull in the water so she didn’t notice the poor shape it was in. She adds that she didn’t have Lloyd Bridges with her at the time!
Tumblr media
“Lucy’s Sister Pays a Visit” (1963)
Lucy’s son’s lunchbox features images from the television western “Lawman,” which ran on ABC from 1958-1962.  A “Lawman” lunchbox is now part of the collection of the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. The lunchbox shows up again in “Vivian Sues Lucy” (1963).
Tumblr media
“Lucy Gets Locked in the Vault” (1963)
Danfield TV is on the scene when Lucy and Mr. Mooney finally get out of the vault.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Safe Cracker” (1963)
Demonstrating how she got locked in the vault for Larry McAdoo (William Woodeson) of Danfield TV, Lucy accidentally locks Mr. Mooney back in the bank vault again!  Taking advantage of the air time, Lucy gets in a commercial for Grandma’s Candy Shop, owned by the safecracker (Jay Novello).
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Plumber” (1964)
Lucy and her plumber (Jack Benny) appear on the television program “Talent Discoverer's Show”.
Tumblr media
Hosted by Greg Gregory (Willard Waterman), the show is sponsored by Kiddie Cookies, baked beans, and varnish!
Tumblr media
Lucy was already on the show once, so this time she disguises herself as Lucretia Carmucci, the talent discoverer of the title, presenting her plumber Harry Tuttle, who plays an arrangement of Donizetti on the violin.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Meets Danny Kaye” (1964)
Lucy writes away for tickets to “The Danny Kaye Show” but is turned down.
Tumblr media
Kaye offers to give her a walk-on role in the telecast – but Lucy manages to steal the spotlight anyway. In 1962 and 1964 Lucille Ball guest-starred on Kaye’s CBS TV program “The Danny Kaye Show.”
Tumblr media
Kaye telephones Bill Paley to see if he has any spare tickets to give Lucy. William S. Paley (1901-90), was the chief executive who built the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) from a small radio network into one of the foremost radio and television network operations in the United States.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Beauty Doctor” (1965)
When Lucy hears about a $25 beauty treatment, she tells Mr. Mooney the money is for a doctor. When the treatment turns out to be a hidden camera show named “Boiling Point”, Lucy must do whatever she can to stop it from airing and revealing her secret to Mr. Mooney.
Tumblr media
“Boiling Point” hosted by Dick Patterson is modeled loosely on “Candid Camera,” a TV show that started in 1948 and continues (in some form) to this day. Its heyday was from 1960 to 1967, when it was a ratings winner for CBS on Sundays at 10pm.
Tumblr media
“Lucy in the Music World” (1965)
When Lucy takes a job in a music producer's office, she wangles her new neighbor Mel Tinker (Mel Torme) into a gig on the musical variety television show “Wing Ding”.
Tumblr media
“Wing Ding” is hosted by Reb Foster and presents The Six Bare Feet, The Torch Bearers, The DDTs, and The Tear Ducts (Lucy and Mel) singing the plaintive ballad "My Trousseau Just Lies on the Shelf.”
Tumblr media
“Lucy Helps Danny Thomas” (1965)
When Mr. Mooney hires Lucy to get some important papers signed at a TV studio, she finds herself dancing on Danny Thomas's TV special instead!
Tumblr media
Although this is not a real TV program, Thomas did host “The Danny Thomas Hour” for 22 episodes in 1967. Thomas was a Desilu regular, appearing in “Make Room for Daddy” (later “The Danny Thomas Show”) as well as doing a cross-over episode with “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour”.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Art Linkletter” (1966)
Lucy is picked from Art Linkletter's studio audience and challenged not to utter a sound for 24 hours to win $200. In January 1966, CBS aired new episodes of “Art Linkletter’s House Party” daily at 2:30pm while “I Love Lucy” was in reruns at 10:30am.
Tumblr media
During the 24 hours, Linkletter arranges for a one-armed man to burst into Lucy's apartment waving a gun and say that a guy has been chasing him for three years. This is a reference to the hit ABC series “The Fugitive” (1963-67) on which David Janssen was on the trail of a one-armed man who killed his wife. Three weeks after this episode of “The Lucy Show” was filmed, Doris Singleton (Ruth Cosgrove on “Lucy and Art Linkletter”) guest-starred on “The Fugitive.” The series was a Quinn Martin Production. Quinn Martin was a producer at Desilu and also married Madelyn Pugh, one of Lucille Ball’s longest lasting writers.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Soap Opera” (1966)
Lucy disguises herself in a number of outrageous get-ups to gain access to the reclusive writer of “Camden Cove,” her favorite soap opera, to learn how the show will turn out.
Tumblr media
Camden Cove is described at “the typical American town” so it was probably inspired by “Peyton Place,” a prime-time soap opera which aired on ABC from 1964 to 1969. Like “Camden Cove,” it aired three nights a week and dealt with the tangled relationships found in a small American town. Danfield was compared to Peyton Place in “Lucy and Joan” (1965).
Tumblr media
“Lucy Goes to a Hollywood Premiere” (1966)
LUCY (to Edwards): “Oh, doctor!  Oh, doctor!”
Lucy disguises herself as an usher to meet celebrities. On the reception line, she asks Vince Edwards for his autograph. Vincent Edwards (1928-96) was probably best known as the title character on ABC TV’s “Ben Casey” (1961-66) which was filmed on the Desilu lot. A new episode of “Ben Casey” aired on ABC at 10pm on the night this episode of “The Lucy Show” premiered. It was directed by Marc Daniels, one of the directors of “I Love Lucy” and Jesse Wayne was the stunt coordinator, as he was for “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Bob Crane” (1966)
Crane was best known as the clever Colonel Hogan in the CBS POW camp sitcom “Hogan's Heroes” (1965-1971), which was filmed at Desilu Studios.
Tumblr media
In the episode, Crane is making a World War One film. A one-line gag features an appearance by John Banner, who played Sergeant Schultz on “Hogan’s Heroes”. He utters his famous catch-phrase from the sitcom.
SCHULTZ: “I know nothing!”  CRANE: “Schultz! You're in the wrong war!”
Tumblr media
Oscar Beregi plays Wolfgang Schmidt the director of the film. Beregi did two episodes of “Hogan's Heroes.” He was probably cast here for his resemblance to Werner Klemperer, who played Colonel Klink on “Hogan’s Heroes” who also wore a monocle.
Tumblr media
“Lucy the Robot” (1966)
Jay North plays Mr. Mooney’s spoiled brat nephew Wendell. North was best known as the star of “Dennis the Menace” (1959-1963). During the show's final season, North played opposite Gale Gordon (Mr. Mooney) as John Wilson.
“You will keep that MENACE subdued for the next eight days!” ~ Mr. Mooney to Lucy about Wendell
Tumblr media
“Dennis the Menace” also included a character named Theodore Mooney!
Tumblr media
“Lucy the Gun Moll” (1966)
RUSTY: “So ya see, no one is really untouchable!”
The episode is a parody of “The Untouchables” (one of Desilu’s biggest hits) starring most of the original cast. Lucy plays a gun moll named Rusty. Robert Stack (who originally played Elliott Ness), agreed to appear as long as the character names were not the same as the original. Stack was joined by Walter Winchell, Bruce Gordon, and Steve London.
Tumblr media
“The Untouchables” started out as a two-part pilot episode of “Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse” in April 1959. The show was introduced by Desi Arnaz and starred Robert Stack and the voice of Walter Winchell, both of whom were cast in the series, which began in October 1959 on CBS. The final episode was aired in May 1963.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Puts Main Street on the Map” (1967)
To bring attention to the plight of the town of Bancroft, Lucy stages a spectacle on Main Street, calling all the television news programs to witness the event.
Tumblr media
Dan McGowan (Dan Rowan) is a TV reporter with the National News Service.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Meets Sheldon Leonard” (1967)
Mr. Mooney allows TV producer Sheldon Leonard to film a hold-up scene at the bank. Lucy thinks he is really a gangster and is determined to foil his robbery.
Tumblr media
Over the telephone, Mr. Cheever tells Mr. Mooney that Sheldon Leonard produced “The Danny Thomas Show,” “Dick Van Dyke” and “I Spy.” Leonard himself adds “Andy Griffith” and “Gomer Pyle” to his credits. All of these shows were filmed at Desilu Studios.
Tumblr media
The end of the episode Leonard says:
“I suddenly got this idea for a new television series. It would be about this kooky red headed girl. She works in a bank and she gets into all sorts of impossible situations and... forget it.  Nobody would ever believe it.”
Tumblr media
“Lucy Helps Ken Berry” (1968)
A dance instructor (Ken Berry) is about to default on his loan until Lucy arranges for him to be on “Ralph Story’s Los Angeles”, a local television show.
Tumblr media
Ralph Story was well known in the Los Angeles area as a local TV personality as host of “Ralph Story’s Los Angeles” from 1963 until the late 1970s.
Tumblr media
Ken and the his students perform “Steppin’ Out With My Baby” by Irving Berlin. For the finale, everyone sings “Pick Yourself Up” by Jerome Kern and Dorothy Fields.
Stay Tuned for Part 3!  Same Time, Same Station!

Public Art
Tumblr media
This piece of art is called the Cross Currents, sculptured by Albert Paley in 2001. It is currently located at Florida Gulf Coast University in the campus courtyard. Albert Paley is a world renowned metal sculptor artist and "In creating a work of art, besides my personal experience, my concern is how it emotionally and intellectually engages the viewer. Through the creative process I have developed a personal visual vocabulary fundamentally based in symbolism and metaphor which is implicit in my work." The Cross Current sculptor is an "8 x 12 foot wide, 17, 000-pound structure is just a jumble of colorful shapes. But as you stare, the serrated teeth of an open-mouthed alligator, shards of sunlight, the fringe of palm fronds and the rough silhouette of a palm trunk slowly emerge". This was the first metal sculptor to get  the coveted the AIA Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest honor awarded by the American Institute of Architects to a non-architect. Originally the sculptor was meant o be placed in between the library and Reed Hall on the FGCU campus but there was controversy on placement of the sculptor. Paley flew down personally and meet with the FCGU president to find a place for the sculptor on campus. Albert Paley was nominated to build the sculptor by Karl H. Hollander, the executive director of the Lee County Alliance for the Arts. An article quotes that " Paley not only employed an expressionist style in his sculpture’s design, he repeated that theme as he hand-painted Cross Current‘s component pieces in bright Florida colors: flamingo pink, sky blue and the yellows, reds and oranges associated with the Gulf Coast’s colorful sunsets".

The most common question we get asked is “Why is the Vignelli Center at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY?”  So we’re sharing stories from the archives about the Vignelli-RIT connection!
in 1987, RIT hosted a symposium called “80′s Style” and Massimo Vignelli was invited to be one of the speakers. We are thrilled that the Vignellis saved all this information about the symposium (even a few vintage brochures about RIT!) You can even see Massimo’s notes here on style:
“People Say: I like that style i don’t like that style. Style is permanent Style is transitory to have a lot of style not to have a lot of style...at all. Fashion is fun - style is dull... live in style. life-style stylish style of the ‘80s”
“The speakers, focusing on style in architecture, art, design and the crafts, include Ettore Sottsass, Jr. (Italian architect and designer), Edward Lucie Smith (British author and critic), Massimo Vignelli (designer), Wendell Castle (furniture artist), and Albert Paley (sculptor).”
Read the whole RIT News & Events article here: https://digitalarchive.rit.edu/xmlui/bitstream/handle/1850/20224/NandE_Vol18Num13_1987_Mar12_Complete.pdf?sequence=1
During the symposium the College of Art and Design’s Bevier Gallery featured an exhibition of Albert Paley and Wendell Castle’s work, both were Artist-in-Residence at RIT at the time.
The whole symposium was recorded and the videotapes are preserved in the RIT Archives!  https://twcarchivesspace.rit.edu/repositories/2/resources/572
We’ll be sharing more stories about the Vignelli-RIT connection. Stay tuned!

institut le rosey, switzerland october 2007 ( feat. @hshmimi )
“you look perfectly fine mims, put your mirror away.”
dominique was fretting. dianna couldn’t blame her, there was something distinctly terrifying in the way lydia “edie” mortimer was explained to others — the perfect cacophony of chaos and precision. beauty and intellect. oftentimes dianna could feel how disappointed her ‘big sister’ was every time she refused to channel and use her intellect, like warm lasers directed to the back of her head. ‘what intellect?’ dianna would laugh back, only to get a withering look in return. perhaps a bit of that look was reflected in dianna’s eyes after dominique whined just a little too loud after waiting for some lacrosse player from the boys dorm to accept her friend request.
a family trait !
“what if she doesn’t like me? i heard she doesn’t like anybody.”
“psh, we’re family. she tolerated me for two years!”
the retort died on dominique’s lips as a small hush fell upon their little corner of the cafeteria, as it always does when an alumna deigned to step into their space. edie mortimer would tower over most students on a good day, but her sky high heels only accentuate just how grown up she is — especially next to two girls in their school uniforms. dianna jumped up with a bright grin on her face, pressing two air kisses upon her old friend’s cheeks.
“your uniform didn’t used to be this short, hm di?” edie held dianna at arms length, surveying her face and picking off invisible lint from her school sweater. only for her eyes to fall onto the blonde seated on her right. “and ah, so this is princess mimi.”
“hello—”
“you’re pretty. good. we can’t let family standards slip. we’ll have to carefully vet the candidates for your little sister, dominique. when the time comes.”
coffees were brought over, alongside a plate of swiss pastries that none of them will touch. dianna affectionately squeezed mimi’s arm before grabbing ahold of her cup.
“how is harvard, edie? have you went on a date with a kennedy yet?”
she laughed, tipping her head back and neck extending like a swan. “andrew fillmore is in my class, he’s an idiot. but his father was just nominated for supreme court, so there might be something there.”
democratic practices did not lack grace when explained by edie, and the usual money-grubbing american practices that dianna and dominique would make fun of seem wholly respectable. technically she was one of them, although her place fell far below royalty. edie’s mother is the beautiful countess tatyana chernysheva-besobrasova, only twenty five when she met and married stanley grafton mortimer iii, eldest son of the famed babe paley and her billionaire first husband. an illustrious lineage when compared to most, but hardly enough influence to conduct any business in her mother’s native russia. the mortimer name still meant something to the upper echelons of american society, and edie had always known that it would be easier to climb where titles barely matter.
the real trick was, edie explained, how she would step out from her grandmother’s lengthy shadow of ‘most fashionable woman in the world’ and be taken seriously. she will not merely be some useless socialite who will one day be a guest editor in vogue ! harvard was part of that plan. summering in internship offices instead of the hamptons was part of that plan. dianna only found it admirable because it was edie mortimer, anyone else in her shoes will be distinctly called; ‘desperate’.
“anyway, i spoke to some of my friends. a few of them think that you would suit ‘next’ but i’ve spoken to people from ‘elite’ and ‘img’ and they’re both very interested. of course, they know who you are.”
dianna bristled, it was the first time the plans were said out loud in such a way. plainly presented to the world. she casually avoided dominique’s inquisitive glance.
“...and columbia would be ecstatic to accept more royals. they’re still pissed about oxford, you know. by next summer, you could cut up that credit card that the emperor gave you.”
—and post the pictures on all of her accounts, as was planned. it must be a clean break, to distance herself from her parents and the people who simultaneously want too much and too little from her. but dianna was the eldest of her sisters, what use of a big sister was she if she couldn’t find a way out that her sisters might be able to exploit?
“you’re the most efficient and well-connected person i know, edie.” her voice was soft, uncharacteristically so. but she meant every word. “what can’t you do?”
edie laughed again, although this time her affection really shone through.
“only because your parents deserve it, korea needs to be celebrating you, not locking you away. they need to know what they’ve been missing.”
now it was time for diana to laugh, a laudable attempt at hiding her emotions. it was all for naught, anyway, both of her ‘sisters’ could see through it, after all. “you’re saying this on purpose to make me cry !”
“oh i’m sorry! i should’ve been more passive aggressive. isn’t that how you like most of your men?”
the table erupted in laughter then, it was easy enough to move towards lighter topics. boys were something that all three of them could gossip about for all hours of the night. so they did, until the bell for afternoon classes rang.
later that day, when dianna saw edie off to her chauffeured rolls royce in front of the main building, she hugged the older girl and whispered fondly in her ear.
“one day, you’re going to rule the world.”
lydia mortimer winked as she pulled back, pinching at dianna’s chin with a smile playing upon her lips.
“that’s the plan.”

Paul Revere Williams
One of the things we cherish about LA is its unabashed approach to architecture. The motley crew of buildings on any given block could reasonably be described as brutalist or Spanish revival or mid-century modern and none of this would be out of place. It’s a weird, beautiful mess of a thing, this city we call home, and we don’t often pause to think about just how it ended up this way.
Paul Revere Williams (1894-1980) is, in large part, the reason why. He was the father of the built city of LA, and it wouldn’t be far-reaching to say that it was he who set the audacious tone for architecture in LA. Because he lived here during the dawn of the movie industry, during the build up and the destruction of the historic downtown core, and during the formation of the haunting web of LA freeways, Williams was able to bear witness to this city in its adolescence, when it was at its most impressionable. Because of this, any and all architectural styles were fair game to Williams and his collaborators, and Williams embraced this with an unprecedented ability. His accomplishments were many (he served as architect for the US Navy, he was the first African American member of the American Institute of Architects, he designed for Frank Sinatra & Lucille Ball..) and this city is forever indebted to his brilliant mind.
Below are a few examples of Williams’ most iconic buildings and the ones from which we have sought most inspiration. It is impossible to capture the sum of his architectural parts, because his portfolio is simply so vast. To see more and learn about his impact on the landscape of LA, we highly recommend watching the PBS documentary, “Hollywood’s Architect”

Apesar desta extensa bagagem, no nome Halston sumiu no tempo.
Tumblr media
Digamos...
Enfim...
