Traintober 2024 Day 30: Oncoming Storm
Tumblr media
1943
Storm clouds swirled and darkened the sky, as an engine and its train puffed slowly through the English countryside.
The engine was a strange, boxy sort. One of Oliver Bulleid’s Q1 goods engines built with austerity in mind.
Despite being barely a year old, wartime service had taken a toll on him. His matte black paint, hardly a handsome look even when new, was covered in soot and grime, and a hoarse, tired panting sound emerged from his funnel.
The rain pelted down, and a distant roar of thunder shook the air.
The engine shuddered, and glanced nervously up at the angry sky.
Air-raids were an ever-present danger, which might loom behind every cloud.
"But surely..." the engine thought, "No aircraft, friend or enemy, would dare to fly in this stuff".
So despite the weather, he almost allowed himself to feel relieved.
At least there would be nothing more than rain.
That relief was soon gone however.
A chill ran through the engine's boiler, as through the storm the unmistakable drone of an aircraft rumbled overhead.
Its yellow nose emerged from the clouds, followed by a sinister gray body.
The black crosses on its wings boldly marked it an agent of death.
The engine saw it circle overhead, buffeted by wind and rain as it did so.
Slowly, painfully slowly, like a predator stalking its prey, it turned.
Then, it dipped its wings and dived towards the train.
The engine roared in fright, smoke poured from his funnel as he dragged the heavy train faster and faster.
He wanted to break the couplings all together, drop the train and run. But the couplings held, the rails curved up a steep hill, and his escape was painfully slow.
The aircraft's guns pointed out from its yellow nose, its sights aimed directly at the fleeing engine.
With great relief the engine crested the top of the hill.
The trucks, equally terrified at the prospect of being left behind, pushed forward, and with their surging weight the train rocketed down the hill, just as the aircraft guns flashed into life.
The crew ducked for cover as tracers blazed past their engine's boiler, burying into the ground and ricocheting off the rails.
Too close, Too Close, TOO CLOSE!
The engine whistled in terror as the winged beast zoomed overhead.
He could only watch, horrified, as it pulled up into a climbing turn, readying itself for another shot.
It was like it was toying with him.
Whistling fit to bust, the train raced down the line. Green fields gave way to houses, and air-raid sirens blared as the nearby town awoke to the ongoing attack.
The engine screamed through the station, feeling little relief even as searchlights and flak burst pierced the stormy sky.
The plane flew doggedly on, dodging ground-fire with almost unnatural swiftness and ease.
Diving in for another pass, it fired again. Metal punctured and tore, and the engine yelped as red hot pain reverberated through his side.
Cold wind blew through the newly opened gaps in his boiler cladding, and steam hissed from the bullet holes piercing his cylinder block.
He desperately tried to fight the pain and keep going. But his vision blurred, and his speed grew slower and slower.
He was a sitting duck.
Again the aircraft rose up, climbing and turning into position for what would surely be the final time.
The engine watched as the plane flew in towards him again, head on.
Its yellow nose grew larger and larger, the cannon mounted in its center bloomed as a black flower of death.
For both machines, the world narrowed into that single weapon.
The aircraft had just put its sights on target, when a searchlight beamed directly onto it.
It fired blindly, only barely missing its mark, as the dazzling light was followed by a flak burst striking clean into its cockpit.
The aircraft shook violently from the impact. Blood and oil sprayed out into its prop-wash, trailing behind in a fine mist which fell down over its would-be victim as it roared mere feet overhead.
Out of control, its dead pilot's hands limp on the stick, the wounded bird slowly pulled away into an unsteady climb.
Searchlights and ground-fire pursued it all the while, until it disappeared back into the storm clouds, and in a flash of lightning it vanished from the world of the living.
The rain continued to pour down, as back on the ground the engine and its train wheezed slowly to a halt.
His crew jumped down from the cab to inspect the damage, as he groaned and cried through escaping steam.
As the engine faded in and out of consciousness, fighting exhaustion and pain, he could only barely register that he was somehow still alive.

Evening: Hawa Mahal
As the sun begins to set, make your way to the Hawa Mahal, or the Palace of Winds. This five-story palace is famed for its unique honeycomb structure with 953 small windows, designed to allow the royal ladies to observe street festivals while remaining unseen. The pink and red sandstone structure glows beautifully under the evening light.
Night: Dinner and Shopping at Johari Bazaar
End your day with some shopping at Johari Bazaar, known for its exquisite jewelry, textiles, and traditional Rajasthani attire. For dinner, savor some authentic Rajasthani cuisine at one of the local restaurants. Dal Baati Churma, Laal Maas, and Ghewar are must-try dishes.
Day 2: Dive Deeper into Jaipur’s Heritage and Culture
Morning: Albert Hall Museum
Begin your second day with a visit to the Albert Hall Museum, located in the Ram Niwas Garden. This museum, designed in an Indo-Saracenic style, houses an impressive collection of artifacts, including paintings, ivory, carpets, stone, and metal sculptures.

Mid-Morning: Birla Mandir
Next, visit the Birla Mandir, also known as the Laxmi Narayan Temple. This stunning white marble temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Goddess Laxmi. The serene environment and intricate carvings make it a peaceful place for reflection and prayer.
Afternoon: Jaipur Zoo and Central Park
For a more relaxed afternoon, head to the Jaipur Zoo, located near the Albert Hall Museum. It’s home to a variety of animals and is a delight for families with children. After the zoo, take a leisurely stroll in Central Park, the largest park in Jaipur, featuring lush gardens, walking trails, and a musical fountain.
Late Afternoon: Patrika Gate

The gate is a vibrant, colorful structure adorned with intricate paintings and murals that depict the rich culture and history of Rajasthan. It’s a popular spot for photography and offers a glimpse into the artistic heritage of the region.
Evening: Chokhi Dhani
For an immersive cultural experience, spend your evening at Chokhi Dhani, an ethnic village resort located a little outside the city. This resort offers a glimpse into Rajasthani village life with traditional dance performances, puppet shows, camel rides, and a lavish Rajasthani dinner.
Night: Back to the City
After a delightful evening at Chokhi Dhani, return to your hotel in Jaipur. If you have some energy left, explore the vibrant nightlife of Jaipur. There are several rooftop bars and cafes where you can enjoy a drink while soaking in the night views of the Pink City.

Would you write a post analyzing Tsurumi as a villain? His characteristic, his purpose, his force, his effection, etc (many other aspects). If it's already done before, pls tell me. Thank you a lot. I love your articles. Keep up the good works. We'll always support you!
Thank you for loving my articles and supporting me!
Now... a full analysis would take really a lot of time so no, I can’t make it right now, but if it’s okay with you I’d love to talk about him a little.
I’ll warn you, I talk about Tsurumi as a character, not as a ‘villain’.
Why not, since Tsurumi clearly does terrible things?
I don’t really like the term of ‘villain’ as it gives me the impression of someone who does things for the evulz and ‘people’s tears are all the pay he'll ever need’, someone who doesn’t do what he does for a reason but due to one or more abnormal vices (pride, greed, wrath, envy…) so that he’s no more human, he becomes the ‘final monster to defeat’ for the hero because no hero can be a good hero if he doesn’t take down a great villain in a battle of good versus evil.
“Golden Kamuy” is no battle of ‘good versus evil’, just of humans versus humans, and Tsurumi, despite what he does, is more than just the big bad for Sugimoto to defeat.
Tsurumi is a character in his own right, representing a certain type of humanity in the REAL WORLD that did, does and will do terrible things, not an abstract concept like ‘evil’.
Dismissing Tsurumi as another ‘Dark Lord’ not only doesn’t do Tsurumi justice as a character, but stops us from realizing that ‘Tsurumis’ exist even in our world, and we need to make sure we will not follow them or ends up as their prey but also that we won’t create them or become them.
So I honestly doubt Tsurumi exists in the story solely to provide Sugimoto a ‘final boss’ to defeat.
Sure, Tsurumi is everyone’s antagonist and sure, Tsurumi is currently the most powerful one.
Tsurumi however works as a foil to represent many things.
For start how a charismatic leader can collect people’s legitimate discontentment, unite them and push them in the wrong direction. Tsurumi’s underlings were soldiers tossed in the war as cannon fodder, poor people who, when they came back, believed they were unfairly punished by the same government who exploited them.
They don’t follow Tsurumi because ‘they want to do evil’ but because they feel the government of Japan horribly mistreated them so they don’t own it any loyalty, and because they hope in a better life, in being saved by Tsurumi.
Tsurumi promises them justice, presenting himself in a way similar to ‘Code Geass’ Zero, who promised to the Japanese, mistreated and discriminated by Britannia, a better world, only Tsurumi does so in a sadly more realistic way.
He doesn’t promise them an equal world, a world better for everyone, a lovely utopia, but a world in which they will have the money they need, which, in the classist world in which they are, will allow them to be given the right that should be bestowed to any human, as they will be no more disposable cannon fodder but appreciated honor guards. In short a world that will be better FOR THEM.
It’s propaganda of course, and it won’t nowhere near as simple as he paints it to be, but it works, it has always worked and sadly it will always work like a charm.
His men believe they were mistreated, his men believe Tsurumi understands them, loves them and will make things ‘right’ for them.
We see it when Tsurumi talks to the nameless group of men from the 7th but we also see it when Tsurumi talks to the men in private.
Tsurumi’s modus operandi is all the same, he listen to their miseries or find them out, offers them his understanding, appreciation and moral support and then presents himself as their savior. He knows what’s better for them, he will take care of them and they… they follow him.
Even Tsukishima, who knows Tsurumi lies more often than not, believes who’ll follow him will find salvation.
Do they really have a chance to find salvation?
Yes and no.
If a man is left in a situation in which he’s abused, mistreated and finds no one to understand him, to offer him a way out, he, more often than not, can end up in troubles.
Edogai could have become a murderer if he kept acting following the voices in his head. Tsurumi freed him from them so in a way he saved him
So yes, the men of the 7th could have ended up worse than they are. Could. We don’t know.
On the other side, if someone saves you from hell merely to use you… well, for you the detriment you’ll get from this, might be worse than the benefit.
And, in this specific case, for a lot of them will be surely worse.
Many of Tsurumi’s men will die to help him reach his goal. They will be judged rebels by central command who might have them executed once it gets his hands on them.
Following blindly someone is never a good idea but it’s so very human to entrust yourself in the hands of a person who seems to understand and care for you and seems to know better than you…
Tsurumi though, doesn’t represent just this but also the way things worked back then.
Selling weapons and drugs was and sadly still is one of the most common means to get a lot of money and it’s sadly something not just men do but even states. States profited and still profit by war and, for a time, they even profited by selling opium.
Tsurumi doesn’t want to get into the weapon and drug trade ‘because he’s bad’ but because back then it was what the leader of a state could do and it’s important to acknowledge this, so we can fight this. It’s not ‘just Tsurumi’, it’s way too many state-heads, way too many politics.
What Thomas says talking with Tsurumi is sadly true, nothing is more profitable than war.
So, Tsurumi Tokushirō (鶴見 篤四郎) .
Birth (around) 1866 in Shibata in the Niigata prefecture from an once wealthy family, possibly the 4th son (this is speculated due to his name containing the kanji for 4, something that was very common at the time in the 4th son). Student at Takeda’s dojo he attended to the Imperial Japanese Army Academy where he likely graduated as a Second Lieutenant at the age of 21 and then he was deployed for  his mission as a spy in Vladivostok, under the identity of Hasegawa Kōichi’s (長谷川 幸一 ) a man who came in Russia as a teenager following his father who moved there due to work and who inherited a photo studio.
As Hasegawa Kōichi he married a local woman, Fina and had a daughter, Olga.
In 1891, when he was 25, Wilk, Kiroranke and Sofia asked him to teach them Japanese. His cover got eventually burned and in the following firefight between the secret police and Wilk’s group his wife and child died and Wilk’s group left.
In 1893, at 27 he’s back in Japan, belonging to the 2nd division of the Imperial Army as a First lieutenant but spends his time teaching at Takeda dojo.
In 1894 Takagi Tomoharu is killed by Usami in front of him and they blame Tsurumi’s horse for this.
In 1894-95 Tsurumi takes part to the Sino-Japanese war with Tsukishima death and, once back from war he is demoted to a position in Hokkaido in the 7th division because Tomoharu’s father resented him for his child’s death.
In 1896 helps Tsukishima to get out of jail, with him will go to Tsukisappo where the special service agency is located and will head back to Russia as an intelligence officer.
In 1900 he meets Koito Otonoshin in Kagoshima.
In 1902 he stages Koito’s kidnapping and he’s sent by the army to help ‘rescue him’ gaining Koito Heiji’s thankfulness.
In 1904-05 he takes part to the Russo-Japanese war, his platoon being the one that raised the flag atop of 203 hill. During the battle of Mukden a shell blew away a part of his brain.
Once he’s back to Hokkaido he orchestrates the murder of Hanazawa Koujirou and, while Inudo is absent, tries to bring to Abashiri the 24 tattooed convicts, who however manages to escape. He’s been searching for them from then, while at the same time trying to find support to built up an army factory and an opium factory in Hokkaido and blackmailing commander Yodogawa so as to have free reins. Among his more notable actions in this time period there’s the assault to Abashiri prison, with the extermination of all the prisoners and guards.
This is his life in short.
Now…
We don’t really know what Tsurumi is aiming at...
...or better we do know he wants to find the gold, use it to buy weapon and built  a weapon factory and a opium factory, take control of Hokkaido as a military dictator and probably stretch his control on Manchuria as well.
What we don’t know is why.
It’s clear Noda doesn’t mean him to act just for the evulz, Tsurumi has a motive, a reason why he wishes so that is based on his experiences in life.
Noda gave us hints but he only scratched at the surface of the problem, so it becomes complicate to correctly understand how badly those happenings affected him and why they pushed to become such a person and therefore to understand him and mind you, understand him doesn’t mean to absolve him, it just mean to realize what moved him to do those acts and see if people in his shoes would have also done the same mistakes, the same horrible things.
This won’t make what Tsurumi does right… just human. Humans can do terrible things and if we want to stop this, we need to understand what went wrong along the way.
We’ve always to remember how important it is to understand why people do what they do but that the reason for doing something is just the reason for doing something, not the magical excuse that makes right do something wrong.
For now we’ll know:
- his family once had wealth but lost it.
This could have been due to the Meiji restoration, therefore creating a possible reason for why Tsurumi is resentful toward the government as it stripped his family of their wealth… which is not as painless as some might think.
- It’s speculated Tsurumi could be the 4th son due to the 4 in his name (which could also be just Noda’s pun for death) but he doesn’t seem to have family members alive, relatives that are in the army and can support him.
Did he lose his family as a consequence of the loss of their wealth? Did they die fighting for or against the restoration? Were they executed?
- Noda raised the possibility Tsurumi’s family was... not the best place in which a child could grow.
Some might have missed it, but he had Ogata said two rather famous sentences and then Tsurumi say similar things. As it’s unlikely Ogata influenced Tsurumi, very likely Ogata learnt them from Tsurumi.
1) The first sentence regards how you’ve to kill your parents to leave the nest.
Ogata: “Killing your parents is... a rite of passage for leaving the nest.” (親殺しってのは... 巣立ちのための通過儀礼だぜ ‘Oyakoroshi tte no wa... sudachi no tame no tsūka gireida ze’) [Chap 59] (said after killing Shinpei’s father when the man was about to kill his son)
Tsurumi: “Now, hold on. You will shoot your mother. You will decide according to your will, Edogai-kun... You have to leave the nest. Because your nest was distorted, you grew up distorted.” (ホラ握りなさい。キミが母君を撃つんだ。決めるんだ江渡買くんの意志で...巣立たなきゃいけない。巣が歪んでいるからキミは歪んで大きくなった ‘Hora nigiri nasai. Kimi ga hahagimi o utsunda. Kimerunda Edogai-kun no ishi de sudatanakya ikenai. Su ga yugande irukara kimi wa yugande ōkiku natta’) [Chap 72] (said while encouraging Edogai to ‘kill’ his mother)
2) The second sentence is “Children can’t chose their parents.” though it’s worth to mention that in Japanese the two sentences are vaguely different but with the same meaning:
Ogata: 子供は親を選べません ‘Kodomo wa oya o erabemasen’ [Chap 103] (said when admitting Hanazawa didn’t love his mother, after Hanazawa commented he had no right to blame him for leaving his mother because the woman was insane and disgusting and Ogata should have felt the same as him)
Tsurumi: 子供は親を選べない  ‘Kodomo wa oya o erabenai’ [Chap 107] (said when discussing how the Lighting bandit and O-gin’s son is the child of two monsters who however were in love)
Where Tsurumi’s parents abusive like Shinpei’s and Edogai’s? Neglectful like Ogata’s? Monsters like Sakamoto’s child’s?
Or it’s actually in the reverse? We shouldn’t look at Tsurumi’s parents but at Tsurumi AS A PARENT and how his job caused the death of his child? But Olga was a tad too young to ‘leave the nest’....
- The whole Vladivostok mess with Wilk and co.
In that day Tsurumi lost his cover as a spy, his wife and his child.
It’s unclear if he was betrayed by the government as Kiro thought, or if it was a plan to gain Wilk’s and Co trust and, if this was the case, who came up with such plan.
It’s implied though he also holds Wilk as accountable for Fina and Olga’s death
- The wish to be ‘reunited’ to Fina and Olga.
One of Tsurumi’s most famous speech was about having Japanese soldiers’ bones rest in Japanese soil. While it can be just a propaganda speech, it can also be he wishes to conquer Vladivostok to be reunited with Fina and Olga’s bones as he could only carry with himself Fina’s finger (and possibly Olga’s).
We’ll have to wait for more info but surely there’s more to learn from Tsurumi as he’s one of the mysteries that make intriguing this story. We’ll have to wait to discover them or, in the meantime, we can try to have fun guessing. ^_-
Thank you for your ask!

Taskmaster is a mysterious figure believed to have been born in Bronx, New York City. He has the ability to mimic the physical movements of anyone he witnesses; writers differ on whether this counts as a "super power". He claims that he has had this ability since childhood. He works as a combat instructor and trains others to become lackeys for other villains by utilizing the techniques he has learned from his observation of superheroes and participates in mercenary jobs from time to time. Initially portrayed as a villain, he has also been shown training U.S. Agent and other neophyte superheroes at the behest of the US government. As a mercenary, he has no ideology except that of his employer. Due to his ability to imitate the techniques and armory of other heroes and villains, Taskmaster has occasionally been used to impersonate other characters.
Tony Masters first demonstrated unusual abilities during childhood. After watching a cowboy show on television, he found himself able to duplicate the sophisticated rope tricks he had just watched the cowboy perform. Psychiatrists, called in at the mother's request, determined that the boy had a form of photographic memory which they called "photographic reflexes". He employed his power several times during his youth for personal gain, most notably when he became a star quarterback of his high school football team after watching one pro football game. Upon graduation, he briefly considered a career as a crime fighter, but opted instead to be a professional criminal, which he perceived to be far more lucrative.[6]
He then began a program of observing the fighting techniques of numerous costumed heroes and villains (using archival television news broadcasts). He initially used his fighting skills to execute several successful grand larcenies, but he had not properly anticipated the dangers involved. He decided to use his stolen capital to establish a center for training aspiring criminals to turn into polished professionals. His goal was to become a supplier for criminal organizations around the world.
Designing a costume with a white cowl and skull mask, he took the name "Taskmaster" and began to train many thugs at criminal academies he had located around the United States. However, his existence was eventually revealed when Pernell Solomon of the Solomon Institute for the Criminally Insane (a front for one of these academies) used the school's resources to create a clone of himself when the administrator required an organ donation due to possessing an extremely rare blood type; the clone (learning of this fate) managed to contact the Avengers. Taskmaster captured Yellowjacket, the Wasp and Ant-Man when the Avengers invaded the premises;[7] but the Avengers followed, exposing his front operation. Taskmaster held his own against Captain America and Iron Man, however, was subsequently forced to flee after a confrontation with Jocasta since his lack of experience with Jocasta's abilities made it impossible to predict the robot's next move.[6] Taskmaster later established a new training academy in Manhattan, where he battled Spider-Man and Ant-Man, and then escaped.[8] He later used a traveling carnival as a mobile base, where he battled Hawkeye and Ant-Man, and then escaped again.[9] He next trained henchmen for the Black Abbott. Alongside Black Abbott, he battled Spider-Man and Nomad, and escaped yet again.[10]
Deciding to further explore the use of a circus as a front for his academy, Taskmaster took over yet another small outfit, and used it for many months to great success. However, while it was playing a small town in Ohio, the Thing and Vance Astrovik (who would later take the name Justice) assisted a government agent in foiling Taskmaster's activities. While escaping, Taskmaster was captured by a group of U.S. Secret Service agents and taken into custody.[11] There is reason to believe that Red Skull was behind the Taskmaster's capture, since a group of normal men were able to capture him.[citation needed] Through Douglas Rockwell (the head of the President's Commission on Superhuman Activities), Mr. Smith arranged for Taskmaster to train John Walker in order to make him appear to be the real Captain America.[12] In order to conceal Red Skull's involvement, Rockwell had the Commission work out a deal to have years taken off Taskmaster's sentence in return for training Walker. After Taskmaster successfully trained Walker, Red Skull arranged for him to escape from the Commission's detention center so he could continue training lackeys and Red Skull himself.[volume & issue needed]
Having escaped the authorities, he set up a base in a derelict graveyard in Brooklyn, where he battled Spider-Man and then escaped.[13] Taskmaster then competed in a contest against Tombstone, where he battled Daredevil and the Punisher.[14]
Taskmaster's more skilled, successful, and notable students include such characters as Crossbones and Cutthroat (both Red Skull's henchmen), U.S. Agent, Hauptmann Deutschland, Diamondback (Captain America's one-time girlfriend), Spymaster, Spider-Woman, and Agent X. On the other hand, Taskmaster also trains many of his students to serve as low-rent henchmen and cannon fodder. In his early appearances, Taskmaster mentions putting intellect-reducing drugs in the diet of his students. He also routinely sent groups of his more disappointing students to serve as "sparring partners" for Red Skull, routinely engaging several of them at a time and killing them all (Hauptmann Deutschland infiltrated the academy and used one such session as an opportunity to kidnap Red Skull). He has also employed other supervillains, such as when he hired Anaconda as his academy's calisthenics instructor.[volume & issue needed]
On another occasion, Taskmaster was hired by the Triune Understanding—a religious group secretly masterminding a smear campaign to paint the Avengers as being religiously and racially intolerant—to stage an attack on a Triune facility. Posing as Captain America, he contacted Warbird, Ant-Man, Silverclaw and Captain Marvel, claiming that he needed their help to destroy a Triune building containing a mind-control machine. Although they saw through his deception and subsequently defeated him—thanks to Captain Marvel transforming into Rick Jones mere milliseconds away from Taskmaster, thus causing a complete change of attack before Taskmaster could react—the building was destroyed in the ensuing battle and Taskmaster escaped, leaving the heroes lacking any evidence of their story.[15]
Taskmaster continued to train numerous villains and thugs until the Avengers began to search out and shut down some of his academies across the United States. Taskmaster began to spend more time working as a mercenary in order to make up for the loss of profit. This led him to join Agency X at the behest of his love interest Sandi Brandenberg, in missions from time to time, while continuing to teach at his academies around the world. More recently, Taskmaster is once again seen as a hired mercenary, contracted by the Committee to kill Moon Knight (Marc Spector). Taskmaster was misled with information that Moon Knight was broken, friendless and desiring death. During the conflict these factors all proved to be false as Marc's ex-girlfriend and butler came to Spector's defense and found the will to fight back. Despite his superior fighting abilities, Taskmaster was defeated. Moon Knight then carved off part of Taskmaster's facemask, though left him alive.[16]
Taskmaster also worked at training henchmen to copy fighting styles of specific heroes. Taskmaster unleashed Deathshield (trained to fight like Captain America), Jagged Bow (trained to fight like Hawkeye), and Blood Spider (trained to fight like Spider-Man) to face off against Spider-Man and Solo. The three were defeated, while Taskmaster escaped yet again.[17]
When the "Civil War" broke out, Taskmaster was hired by the government and enrolled into a team of Thunderbolts and given temporary amnesty to take down the Secret Avengers.[18] He later battles the Secret Avengers in New York. He attempts to kill Susan "Sue" Storm, only for Reed Richards to take the bullet. Enraged, Sue crushes him with an invisible telekinetic field, rendering him unconscious.[19] He was sent to the Negative Zone Prison with the other "Major-League" members of the Thunderbolts army such as Lady Deathstrike,[volume & issue needed] but was apparently freed by Deadpool.[20] In order to regain his own reputation as a mercenary, Deadpool frees Taskmaster from his imprisonment to have a showdown with him while potential merc contractors watched from their captive position in a nearby prison. Taskmaster is again referred to as Tasky by Deadpool, and a fight ensues between him and the manacled Deadpool. He mentions his professional ethics, but this simply comes down to deciding to simply maim his opponent rather than kill him. In the end, he is defeated by Deadpool who, in spite of the victory, fails to impress his captive audience. After being thanked for letting him win, Taskmaster tells Deadpool that he had not let him win, "The truth is... You're that good. You've always been that good. Which won't get you a cup of coffee until you figure out how to be a professional..."[21] Taskmaster was given a full presidential pardon for his efforts in testing the security of the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, in which he was able to break in and place Deputy Director Maria Hill in his sights. Though he was allowed to leave, a threatening message left in Hill's private bathroom revealed that if he ever desired, infiltrating S.H.I.E.L.D. would be no difficult feat.[volume & issue needed]
Taskmaster replaces Gauntlet as Camp Hammond's drill instructor and is tasked with training registered superheroes for the Fifty State Initiative. Taskmaster would also be involved in MVP's cloning process inputting (via technology) the original's move set for the Scarlet Spiders as well as the move set of Spider-Man.[22]
Taskmaster is hired by Deadpool to help his old enemy and occasional friend defeat the Thunderbolts. Being disguised as Deadpool, he gets captured and is about to be beheaded when the real Deadpool saves him. Deadpool finally pays him, but he expresses annoyance at being paid from an ATM due to his major villain status.[23]
During the "Dark Reign" storyline, Taskmaster is chosen to lead the Shadow Initiative after the Skrull invasion, with their first mission to take down Hardball's HYDRA cell in Madripoor.[24] Along with Constrictor, Bengal, Typhoid Mary and Komodo, Taskmaster stealthily leads the group into the country, but they are soon discovered by HYDRA.[25] Norman Osborn appoints Taskmaster to train criminals for the new Initiative, to behave like heroes. His first task is to retrain Penance.[26] Also, when Blastaar takes control of the Negative Zone prison 42, Taskmaster is ordered to lead a squad to take the prison back.[27] Later, he gives Night Thrasher a severe bullet wound to the head, allowing Osborn to take Night Thrasher prisoner.[28] When Emma Frost and Namor resign from the Cabal, Taskmaster is offered membership.[29] Taskmaster was present at a meeting when Osborn discusses about Asgard.[30][31] He is severely wounded at the meeting as a result of an attack by Doctor Doom. While recovering in a hospital, Taskmaster declined to join the Cabal. Osborn cut the oxygen tank next to Taskmaster's bed, reminding him that it was Osborn who plucked him from obscurity. Taskmaster then agrees to join in the siege of Asgard.[29] During the battle, he fights with both versions of Captain America (Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes).[32] As Asgard falls, Taskmaster finds Constrictor and the two beat a hasty retreat, but not before Taskmaster taunts Osborn about how Taskmaster helped Deadpool. After Osborn's defeat by Captain America and Iron Man, Taskmaster and Constrictor went back to mercenary work.[33]
A false rumor is spread that Taskmaster is leaking information about the criminal underworld to Rogers's new 'heroic' regime. A bounty of $1,000,000,000 is placed on the Taskmaster's head by the mysterious Org. The hordes of AIM, HYDRA, the Secret Empire, ULTIMATUM, the Cyber Ninjas, the Black Choppers, the Trenchcoat Mafia, the Legions of the Living Lightning, the Militiamen, the Sons of the Serpent, and the Inquisition take up the chase to claim the money. Taskmaster, ambushed in a small diner, manages to best his opponents. But the diner's waitress, Mercedes Merced, gets entangled in the saga and is included in the bounty. Taskmaster reveals to Mercedes that his powers cause him to lose his explicit memory, meaning that he cannot remember anything about his personal life, and the only way for the whole ordeal to be over is to re-discover Taskmaster's origins.[34] Taskmaster and Mercedes' quest takes them to Mexico to battle the Don of the Dead,[35] and then to Bolivia to the village where everyone is Hitler. Inside an exact replica of Himmler's Wewelsburg Castle, Taskmaster regains his memories. He remembers being S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Tony Masters that had been sent to Bolivia to terminate Horst Gorscht, the Nazi scientist responsible for a corrupted version of the super-soldier serum. Gorscht had developed a new serum that could unlock the mind's potential to absorb knowledge instantaneously. With Gorscht's serum and test notes destroyed, Masters injected the last of the serum into himself. Having regained these memories, Taskmaster recognizes Mercedes' voice as being the same as 'The Hub', a mysterious voice who works for the Org. Taskmaster shoots Mercedes in the shoulder and threatens to kill her if she doesn't start talking. Mercedes reveals that the Org is a S.H.I.E.L.D. front, and that she is not only an agent, but also Taskmaster's wife. Miles above the Wewelsburg castle in an airship, the Minions' International Liberation Front (a secret group composed of henchmen from all of the major terrorist organizations), led by Redshirt the Uber-Henchman, reveal their deception and plot to rule the criminal underground by using Taskmaster to lead them straight to the Org.[1] Redshirt leads the Minions' International Liberation Front (or the acronym MILF for short) into battle against the Taskmaster and Mercedes. Mercedes convinces the Taskmaster to trust her and work together to fend off the forces of MILF. During the battle, Taskmaster regains his memories of Mercedes and how he fell in love with her. Before they can reconcile, Taskmaster is attacked from behind by Redshirt who has genetically altered his body and mastered superior fighting skills to those of Taskmaster. Redshirt gains the upper hand as the pair push each other to the limits. Mercedes tries to intervene to protect her husband, but is quickly and effortlessly cast to one side. Enraged, Taskmaster attacks Redshirt and delivers a killing blow using Redshirt's own fighting style (which causes Taskmaster to lose his memories once more). Taskmaster, not recognizing Mercedes or his reasons for being there, flees and leaves Mercedes alone once more.[volume & issue needed]
Avengers Academy student Finesse later seeks out Taskmaster, thinking that he may be her long-lost father. When she finds Taskmaster, Finesse ends up sparring with him. After much sparring, Taskmaster finally relents to tell Finesse that he very well might be her father, but that the powers to learn so much about others’ movements and techniques have caused him to forget important things in life. Knowing he likely will not remember the conversation in a couple days, Taskmaster tells Finesse that he wanted to fight her so he might remember her.[36]
During the 2011 "Fear Itself" storyline, Taskmaster comes to the aid of Alpha Flight when it comes to forming a resistance against the Unity Party that was formed by Master of the World.[37]
In order for the Masters of Evil to obtain the Crown of Wolves for the Shadow Council, Max Fury hired Taskmaster to retrieve it only for Taskmaster to demand more money for the job and he hid in the Hole. The Secret Avengers went to the Hole in order to get the Crown of Wolves before Fury got his hands on it. This led to a fight between Taskmaster and Agent Venom.[38] However, Taskmaster escaped and returned the crown to Fury, only for Max to apparently kill Taskmaster when he asks for payment. When the crown's effects don't function for Max, Taskmaster takes the crown for himself, which saves his life by making him the Avatar for the Abyss.[39] As the Abyss spreads, the Secret Avengers members Venom and Ant-Man are able to remove the crown and stop the spread, while Taskmaster and the Masters of Evil are left behind when the Avengers leave with Max in their custody.[40]
The criminals of Bagalia imprison Taskmaster and are preparing to offer him up to the highest bidder. S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Secret Avengers come to rescue him and offer him a position. As their inside man, Taskmaster is part of the new High Council of A.I.M. as the Minister of Defense.[41] Mockingbird later goes to A.I.M. Island to assist Taskmaster in helping make contact between the Iron Patriot A.I. drones and James Rhodes.[42] After the mission goes south and Mockingbird is left stranded on AIM Island,[volume & issue needed] Taskmaster works undercover to free her.[volume & issue needed] But when he gets the chance to get her off the island, she doesn't respond to anything he says until both are captured. While being interrogated, Taskmaster is shot and seemingly killed by Mockingbird apparently under the control of Scientist Supreme (Andrew Forson).[43] However, Mentallo discovered that Mockingbird purposely missed any vitals and Taskmaster survived.[44]
At the time when Captain America was brainwashed into being a Hydra sleeper agent by Red Skull's clone using the powers of Kobik, Taskmaster later relocated to Bagalia where he became its sheriff.[45]
When Taskmaster and Black Ant (Eric O'Grady's Life Model Decoy counterpart) found out what was done to Captain America to be made into a Hydra sleeper agent, they planned to have a parley with Maria Hill to discuss this with only for the new Madame Hydra (Elisa Sinclair) to get to them first.[46] Impressed with the fighting skills of the two of them, Madame Hydra made them bodyguards.[47]
During the "Secret Empire" storyline, Taskmaster appears as a member of Hydra's Avengers.[48] During the battle in Washington DC, Taskmaster and Black Ant witness their teammate Odinson having enough of working for Hydra and striking them down. The two of them defect from Hydra and free the captive Champions. When Taskmaster and Black Ant asks for them to put in a good word for them, Spider-Man webs them up anyway.[49]
Taskmaster and Black Ant later attack Empire State University where Dr. Curt Connors was teaching a class. As the inhibitor chip prevents Connors into turning into Lizard, Peter Parker sneaks off to become Spider-Man. During his fight with Black Ant and Taskmaster, Spider-Man is exposed to the Isotope Genome Accelerator that splits him from his Peter Parker side.[50]
In a prelude to "Hunted", Taskmaster and Black Ant work with Kraven the Hunter and Arcade in capturing some animal-themed characters for his upcoming hunt.[51] Black Ant and Taskmaster are talking about the Hunt. Taskmaster betrays Black Ant saying that Black Ant is an animal-themed villain and tasers Black Ant to get more money.[52] Lizard finds Taskmaster at the Pop-Up with No Name. Lizard proceeds to poisons him by slipping a poison into her beer. Lizard offers Taskmaster the antidote if he can take Lizard to Central Park. While traveling there, Lizard and Taskmaster defeat Vermin, freeing innocent bystanders. Taskmaster helps put a taser chip in Lizard's body, and takes him to Arcade.[53] Taskmaster frees Lizard from his binds and Lizard tells Taskmaster that the poison will wear off in 24 hours.[54] Taskmaster makes off with Black Ant before Yellowjacket, Human Fly, Razorback, Toad, and White Rabbit can take revenge on him. As they leave, Taskmaster states that Black Ant would've done the same for him. When Black Ant asks "Do you mean the betrayal part or the rescue part?" All Taskmaster can say is "yeah!"[55]
During the "King in Black" storyline, Taskmaster is among the villains recruited by Mayor Wilson Fisk to be part of his Thunderbolts at the time of Knull's invasion. While having argued with Mister Fear over who was the first villain to wear a skull mask, Taskmaster becomes the de facto field leader of the group. Following the deaths of Ampere and Snakehead, Taskmaster couldn't stop Rhino from walking off and tells the remaining members not to help the Manhattan Defenders. He and the Thunderbolts arrive at Ravencroft to meet with Norman Osborn who Mayor Fisk claims can help them defeat Knull.[56]

1824 Aug., Thurs. 26
6 1/2
11 3/4
Used my umbrella instead of a stick, which altogether took me quarter hour and going to the cabinet as much longer – Dawdling and not ready till 8 50/60 at which hour (having marked down my route on a bit of paper set off to Upper 9 Duke Street Grosvenor Square to order a pair of stays of Waller, recommended by Miss Pattison and Mrs. Ackers to M– [Mariana]
3/4 hour dressing and undressing, and having a pair tried on – Spoke to Mr. Waller, a plain-in-his-appearance respectable elderly man, then measured by 1 of his young women – Very civil – Then went to Hutton and Buckley 7 Upper Grosvenor Street – Measured by Buckley –
Sauntered slowly back – Went along Piccadilly as far as the Basin and Bolton Street – Got home at 11 – Had breakfast (boiled milk) settled the remainder of my accounts I could not finish last night and wrote the above of today which has taken me till 12 25/60 – I am just going to arrange when to go and what to do next § – Feel quite comfortable, and at home, and amused, and happy – ( § doing this has taken me till now, 1 p.m.)
Went out at 1 10/60 and took Cordingley with me – our route, the Haymarket, Pall-mall as far as Carlton Palace, then back to the bottom of the Haymarket along Cockspur, Charing Cross, Strand (went down to look at Waterloo bridge and turned for a minute or 2 into the Court of Somerset-house), Fleet Street (ordered tea at Twinning’s for my father five pounds worth), Ludgate Hill, ditto strait past Saint Paul’s, along Watling Street, Bridge Road, Cannon Street, Great East Cheap, Fish Street Hill to No. 5 Monument Yard, Miles Stringer and Co. to order £5 worth tea for my [blank] –
Paid for this, as I had done for my father’s at Twinning’s, ordered it to be sent off immediately and the receipts respectfully also with it – Mr. Stringer shewed me a nearer way thro’ his courtyard (thro’ 2 passages with steps up and down them the last of which opened into “Saint Mary at the Hill” and Saint Mary brought us into Thames street –
Then along the river front of the custom house, into Thames Street again and so to the tower – Walked along the East North and West sides of the moat, then went over the draw-bridge as far as we might (a beef-eater stopt the way – it would have been his perquisite or that of some others brethren to shew the interior) –
Returned by Thames Street Bridge road, Queen Street, across cheapside, King Street to the Guildhall, a noble gothic room – Large gothic windows with painted glass – 2 monuments one to the memory of the first Mr. Pitt afterwards Lord Clatham and the other to that of the last Mr. Pitt (William) – 2 gigantic statues partly in armour at the west end of the room (the hall) one in each corner –
On returning into Cheapside, went as far as the Mansion House, then turned back and went in to Saint Pauls – It was near 3 and during service – Stood a while to hear the chanting took a hasty view of the nave and transepts, and returned to Temple bar –
Then up Chancery lane, along Holborn, Hatton Garden, Hatton wall, Vine Street, to Clerkenwell to see the tread-mill, the only one in London (there is one at           3 miles from here) – It was too late – not shown after 3 and it was 3 20/60 – Besides I ought to have had a permit from the sitting magistrate in Hatton Garden – Might get one anytime from 11 to 3 tomorrow – I am determined to see this, not only for its own sake, but “the tread-mill” was the only thing Miss Maclean saw when in London this year –
From Clerkenwell along Vine Street, Hatton road, Portpool, King’s Road, Theobald’s Road, Bloomsbury Square, Hart Street, museum Street, Great Russell Street (too late to see the British Museum but just peeped into the court) Hanway Street? into Oxford Street, into Soho Square
Walked about a few minutes in the Bazar (a large building in the the north corner of the west side – well worth seeing) – Came out at the South side, thro’ Fifth Street, Compton Street, Princes Street, Coventry Street, Piccadilly 220 –
Got home at 5 1/2 – Cordingley said she was tired from being the weaker for her bilious attack, but should be better and stronger tomorrow – We must have [walked] 10 or 12 miles – Too far for her (dinner at 5 35/60) – Sent her out a glass of port wine – She really seems no worse for her walking –
Excellent vermicelli soup and harrico of mutton for dinner with potatoes and kidney beans, and cold cherry and currant tart – Mr. Webb who brought the first dish in yesterday and today, says there must be above 12,000,000 inhabitants in London, an addition of about 4000 about a year ago, chiefly Spanish refugees, settled about Soho Square in Crown Street, Queen Street, Compton Street, King Street, etc
He says I ought to see the Roman Catholic Chapel in Moorfields – It is very splendid – and advises my going to the Jew’s synagogue in Moorfields about 11 a.m. on Saturday – After dinner for above an hour tracing out this mornings route on the map –
From 8 to 9 writing so far of this page – In walking about this morning, could not help feeling proud of the metropolis of my country – What magnificence – What comfort – What luxury! Like Tyre of old, her merchants are princes –
Writing out the rough draft of my index of today and yesterday took me from 9 to 9 25/60 – On coming in to dinner Monsieur Leuliette presented me with my passport, which he had got this morning from the French Ambassador “gratis” for his excellency and from Monsieur Leuliette, whom I merely pay by going in their coach from here to Paris – Very fine day –
Settling what to do tomorrow took me till 10 1/2 – Went to my room at 10 3/4 – E [two dots, treating venereal complaint] O [no dots, marking discharge] None, or so very little as to be scarce perceptible
[sideways in margin] Waller, Stays Maker. Buckley, Tailor
