Shinto Academia - Year 4xxAF (Night)

So, this painting took me quite a while but I really had tun working on it, first time I painted rain too.

So, about a month ago I finished playing the excellent FFXIII-2 (amazing art direction and superb soundtrack) and I was fascinated with the atmosphere and setting of "Shinto Academia", a futuristic city the main characters explore for a while.

Well, this is a reinterpretation: it is a reinterpretation of the City Of Academia in the Year 4xxAF (good timeline) with the coloring and lights of Academia in the Year 400AF (bad timeline).

Serah, the main heroine, sat on eaves as she admires the architectural urban glimpse of Academia.

While I was painting this, I had the Shinto Academia theme almost always on repeat to delve myself into the atmosphere, give it a listening.

When The Creator first descended, they knew that the humans will stray. If they are anything akin to them, then that is a given.

After many hours of pondering to themselves, they 'blinked'.

From then on, a child was born. Being a boy or a girl did not mean anything. What did, however, was their name:

Yeul. The child who appeared the same every time, and whom was The Creator, in mortal form. They never objected to the title.

The humans later discovered they held an ability: the power to see not only the future, but of the past and present, too.

One day, as they walked in Byakuyakoku, they gasped, eyes shining. Then, with an exhale, they fell, dying instantly.

Pandemonium ensured. Their Creator, whom people had promised to keep safe, had died a mere eleven years into their life...

...Imagine the surprise when, one day later, a baby was born with similar features to Yeul. And, as their eyes opened, they shined once more.

Humans then understood: should they die, then they shall be born once more.

The new Yeul, while scarily similar to their last incarnation, always had one thing different. For example, the first incarnation liked the sand, and this one was born without their left leg, leaving them to adopt a walking cane.

When asked why they don't create a new one, for that is a power they know Yeul has, the child rolled their eyes.

"Why should I? This life isn't one full of many physical activities."

They were, in the end, right.

When they were born into the world at the same time as King Deshret, they became the Lord of Sands' most trusted advisor. Never once abusing his power, he couldn't help himself one day, gesturing to his glorious kingdom.

"It truly is beautiful." Yeul's reply was. Although their tone was as flat as them, their lips quirked into a small smile.

"Indeed it is..." the God-King sighed. "Tell me, one thing: will it last?"

"..." an expression of sadness graced their face. "No. It will not."

King Deshret nodded, "I had thought it wouldn't." and left it at that.

When he sacrificed himself years later, he smiled. At least that Yeul rested peacefully.

while your yeul had died years ago, you knew that one day you'd come across a yeul that never knew you

for years, you kept that thought somewhere in the back of your mind, never wanting to think about it too much

until one day, yeul stood in front of you. but not your yeul. a new one.

this new yeul didn't know you, yet she smiled at you with the same kindness you were used to. almost like she was the yeul you knew, but you had to remind yourself that that girl was long gone

still, yeul felt drawn to you. despite not knowing of her past with you, she felt this desire to be near you

it was hard to be around her, but being away from her wasn't easier. and yeul could clearly see you were struggling to be around her

yet she never said a word. she didn't want to bring up any painful memories, as she suspected that you might've known a former version of herself

both you and yeul knew that the girl you knew was long gone. but perhaps there was a chance for this new yeul to become important to you as well…

Yeul is so sweet but can be so effortlessly unsettling at the same time and I love that about her

ffxiii-2 fragments after - chapter 1 overtura; reflections and analysis

ffxiii-2 fragments after opens with yeul = etro. we see the curse of the seeress is not only a sentence of prophethood, exile, seclusion, and death, but relegation of young girls and daughters to mutism by their families who pity them.

ffxiii proves time and time again to be about one essential relationship between mother and daughter. the very first word yeul = etro = the creator of humankind hears and speaks and yearns and dies for!

yeul/etro’s sentencing as a female seeress is paralleled with lightning’s entombment, the very first vision that yeul feels ravage her body. “she struggled until the end. she looked desperate.” it's very very critical to understand that lightning being swallowed by the earth was in many ways her death. she was buried alive—!

note: a vision of lightning is the impetus of yeul’s many deaths. as if caius didn't have enough reasons to hate her!

here it's also necessary to note caius truly is the only gentle and nurturing presence in yeul’s life. the way he treats her in this chapter alone makes it clear she could not have a more caring and concerned guardian/father. that man loves her and is entirely dedicated to her body and soul. (once again we revisit xiii as the only mainline final fantasy where every male character is designed entirely to revolve around a woman.)

and here we have serah’s first usurpation of feminine damnation, futility, and modesty, as she refuses to take her prophetic visions lying down as is typical of a seeress, and again and again chooses to act on her visions to spare others a worser fate, instead of suffering in silence. serah was breaking cardinal seeress rules from the start.

compared to the tempest that was lightning’s inaugural vision, we now have yeul gentled and by serah’s presence. my war and peace sisters... yeul serahisms

you have to love the intentional tangents drawn between etro, yeul, and serah as daughters. yeul idolizes serah the way serah does her sister, the way hope does her sister.

the first person who ever excites and inspires yeul is serah. (not a thought spared to noel, how very tragic and romantic) 😭 this narrative centers women through and through.

underrated xiii-2 theme is serah carrying out a repressed girl’s dreams. yeul lives vicariously through her at every moment.
