I got my hands on copies of Fragments Before and Fragments After.

Me being me, I’ve been reading through Fragments After first. Something that sticks out to me is the detached way Caius is always spoken of. He’s described as cold and even “eerie”, a man Noel’s village actively hates.

When Lightning is fighting him early on, though, I found a fascinating description: that his heart was like “apocalyptic fire”. It was a pair of words that described so much about him so quickly: bitter, empty, all-consuming, heat and pain and the wailing and gnashing of teeth.

I’d always been a bit purple in my early days and described Caius as being fierce and fiery, bitter and sad. I’d never had any idea that, canonically, he was described that way, too.

One aspect of bhunivelze's design I really love is the fact that he's completely naked, but covered up below the waist. Considering how he's heavily based on / inspired by the christian god, covering his lower half is such a clever way to convey his own impurity (experiencing of human emotion and, at least in the jp version, lust for lightning) in the same way adam and eve covered themselves when they committed the original sin and were made to feel ashamed of their nude forms as they were cast out of eden
